Editorial for the Special Issue "Progress in Group Field Theory and Related Quantum Gravity Formalisms"

This Editorial introduces the Special Issue "Progress in Group Field Theory and Related Quantum Gravity Formalisms" which includes a number of research and review articles covering results in the group field theory (GFT) formalism for quantum gravity and in various neighbouring areas of quantum gravity research. We give a brief overview of the basic ideas of the GFT formalism, list some of its connections to other fields, and then summarise all contributions to the Special Issue.

Editorial: Coarse graining in quantum gravity -- Bridging the gap between microscopic models and spacetime physics

The Renormalization Group encodes three concepts that could be key to accelerate progress in quantum gravity. First, it provides a micro-macro connection that could connect microscopic spacetime physics to phenomenology at observationally accessible scales. Probing The Structure of Space-Time with Cosmic Rays

The study of the interactions of Cosmic Rays (CR's) with universal diffuse background radiation can provide very stringent tests of the validity of Special Relativity. The interactions we consider are the ones characterized by well defined energy thresholds whose energy position can be predicted on the basis of Special Relativity. We argue that the experimental confirmation of the existence of these thresholds can in principle put very stringent limits on the scale where Special Relativity and/or continuity of space-time may possibly break down.

Probing Quantum Gravity Through Exactly Soluble Midi-Superspaces I

It is well-known that the Einstein-Rosen solutions to the 3+1 dimensional vacuum Einstein's equations are in one to one correspondence with solutions of 2+1 dimensional general relativity coupled to axi-symmetric, zero rest mass scalar fields. We first re-examine the quanization of this midi-superspace paying special attention to the asymptotically flat boundary conditions and to certain functional analytic subtleties associated with regularization. We then use the resulting quantum theory to analyze several conceptual and technical issues of quantum gravity.

Probing Universality Of Gravity

I wish to expound a novel perspective of probing universal character of gravity. To begin with, inclusion of zero mass particle in mechanics leads to special relativity while its interaction with a universal force shared by all particles leads to general relativity. The universal nature of force further suggests that it is intrinsically attractive, self interactive and higher dimensional. I argue that the principle of universality could serve as a good guide for future directions.
