We present new sub-arcsecond-resolution Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) imaging at 10 GHz of 155 ultra-luminous ($L_{\rm bol}\sim10^{11.7-14.2} L_\odot$) and heavily obscured quasars with redshifts $z \sim0.4-3$. The sample was selected to have extremely red mid-infrared (MIR)-optical color ratios based on data from Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) along with a detection of bright, unresolved radio emission from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) or Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) Survey. Our high-resolution VLA observations have revealed that the majority of the sources in our sample (93 out of 155) are compact on angular scales $<0.2^{\prime \prime}$ ($\leq 1.7$ kpc at $z \sim2$). The radio luminosities, linear extents, and lobe pressures of our sources are similar to young radio active galactic nuclei (AGN; e.g., Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum, GPS, and Compact Steep Spectrum, CSS, sources), but their space density is considerably lower. Application of a simple adiabatic lobe expansion model suggests relatively young dynamical ages ($\sim10^{4-7}$ years), relatively high ambient ISM densities ($\sim1-10^4$ cm$^{-3}$), and modest lobe expansion speeds ($\sim30-10,000$ km s$^{-1}$). Thus, we find our sources to be consistent with a population of newly triggered, young jets caught in a unique evolutionary stage in which they still reside within the dense gas reservoirs of their hosts. Based on their radio luminosity function and dynamical ages, we estimate only $\sim20\%$ of classical large scale FRI/II radio galaxies could have evolved directly from these objects. We speculate that the WISE-NVSS sources might first become GPS or CSS sources, of which some might ultimately evolve into larger radio galaxies.
The 9.7-micron silicate absorption profile in the interstellar medium provides important information on the physical and chemical composition of interstellar dust grains. Measurements in the Milky Way have shown that the profile in the diffuse interstellar medium is very similar to the amorphous silicate profiles found in circumstellar dust shells around late M stars, and narrower than the silicate profile in denser star-forming regions. Here, we investigate the silicate absorption profile towards the very heavily obscured nucleus of NGC 4418, the galaxy with the deepest known silicate absorpt…
We combine results from deep ALMA observations of massive ($M_*>10^{10}\;M_{\odot}$) galaxies at different redshifts to show that the column density of their inter stellar medium (ISM) rapidly increases towards early cosmic epochs. Our analysis includes objects from the ASPECS and ALPINE large programs, as well as individual observations of $z\sim 6$ QSO hosts. When accounting for non-detections and correcting for selection effects, we find that the median surface density of the ISM of the massive galaxy population evolves as $\sim(1+z)^{3.3}$. This means that the ISM column density towards th…
We present a multi-wavelength study of seven AGN at spectroscopic redshift >2.5 in the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field South, selected to have good FIR/sub-mm detections. Our aim is to investigate the possibility that the obscuration observed in the X-rays can be produced by the interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy. Based on the 7 Ms Chandra spectra, we measured obscuring column densities N$_{H, X}$ in excess of 7x10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and intrinsic X-ray luminosities L$_{X}$>10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for our targets, as well as equivalent widths for the Fe K$α$ emission line EW>0.5-1 keV. We built…
We report the discovery of six spatially extended (10-100 kpc) line-emitting nebulae in the z=0.57 galaxy group hosting PKS0405-123, one of the most luminous quasars at z<1. The discovery is enabled by the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) and provides tantalizing evidence connecting large-scale gas streams with nuclear activity on scales of <10 proper kpc (pkpc). One of the nebulae exhibits a narrow, filamentary morphology extending over 50 pkpc toward the quasar with narrow internal velocity dispersion (50 km/s) and is not associated with any detected galaxies, consistent with a cool …

We present ALMA 870 micron (345 GHz) data for 49 high redshift (0.47<z<2.85), luminous (11.7 < log L(bol) (Lsun) < 14.2) radio-powerful AGN, obtained to constrain cool dust emission from starbursts concurrent with highly obscured radiative-mode black hole (BH) accretion in massive galaxies which possess a small radio jet. The sample was selected from WISE with extremely steep (red) mid-infrared (MIR) colors and with compact radio emission from NVSS/FIRST. Twenty-six sources are detected at 870 microns, and we find that the sample has large mid- to far-infrared luminosity ratios consistent with…
We report the results of a pilot study of CO$(4-3)$ emission line of three {\it WISE}-selected hyper-luminous, dust-obscured quasars (QSOs) with sensitive ALMA Band 3 observations. These obscured QSOs with $L_{\rm bol}>10^{14}L_\odot$ are among the most luminous objects in the universe. All three QSO hosts are clearly detected both in continuum and in CO$(4-3)$ emission line. Based on CO$(4-3)$ emission line detection, we derive the molecular gas masses ($\sim 10^{10-11}$ M$_\odot$), suggesting that these QSOs are gas-rich systems. We find that three obscured QSOs in our sample follow the simi…
Observed at z = 4.601 and with L_bol = 3.5 x 10^14 Lsun, W2246-0526 is the most luminous galaxy known in the Universe, and hosts a deeply-buried active galactic nucleus (AGN)/super-massive black hole (SMBH). Discovered using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), W2246-0526 is classified as a Hot Dust Obscured Galaxy (Hot DOG), based on its luminosity and dust temperature. Here we present spatially resolved ALMA [CII]157.7um observations of W2246-0526, providing unique insight into the kinematics of its interstellar medium (ISM). The measured [CII]-to-far-infrared ratio is ~2 x 10^-4,…
Outflows from AGB stars enrich the Galactic environment with metals and inject mechanical energy into the ISM. Radio spectroscopy can recover both properties through observations of molecular lines. We present results from SWAG: "Survey of Water and Ammonia in the Galactic Center". The survey covers the entire Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), the inner 3.35deg x 0.9deg (~480 x 130pc) of the Milky Way that contains ~5x10^7 Mo of molecular gas. Although our survey primarily targets the CMZ, we observe across the entire sightline through the Milky Way. AGB stars are revealed by their signature of do…
Obscured AGN represent a significant fraction of the entire AGN population, especially at high redshift (~70% at z=3--5). They are often characterized by the presence of large gas and dust reservoirs that are thought to sustain and possibly obscure vigorous star formation processes that make these objects shine at far-IR and sub-mm wavelengths. We exploit ALMA Cycle 4 observations of the continuum (~2.1mm) and high-J CO emission of a sample of six X-ray selected SMGs hosting an obscured AGN at z_spec>2.5 in the 7 Ms CDF-S. We measured the masses and sizes of the dust and molecular gas and we d…
We present the first luminous, spatially resolved binary quasar that clearly inhabits an ongoing galaxy merger. SDSS J125455.09+084653.9 and SDSS J125454.87+084652.1 (SDSS J1254+0846 hereafter) are two luminous z=0.44 radio quiet quasars, with a radial velocity difference of just 215 km/s, separated on the sky by 21 kpc in a disturbed host galaxy merger showing obvious tidal tails. The pair was targeted as part of a complete sample of binary quasar candidates with small transverse separations drawn from SDSS DR6 photometry. We present follow-up optical imaging which shows broad, symmetrical ti…
Submillimeter rotational lines of H2O are a powerful probe in warm gas regions of the ISM, tracing scales and structures ranging from kpc disks to the most compact and dust-obscured regions of galactic nuclei. The ortho-H2O(423-330) line at 448 GHz, which was recently detected in a local luminous infrared galaxy (Pereira-Santaella et al. 2017), offers a unique constraint on the excitation conditions and ISM properties in deeply buried galaxy nuclei since the line requires high far-IR optical depths to be excited. In this letter, we report the first high-redshift detection of the 448 GHz H2O(42…
We present a multiwavelength study of an atypical submillimeter galaxy in the GOODS-North field, with the aim to understand its physical properties of stellar and dust emission, as well as the central AGN activity. Although it is shown that the source is likely an extremely dusty galaxy at high redshift, its exact position of submillimeter emission is unknown. With the new NOEMA interferometric imaging, we confirm that the source is a unique dusty galaxy. It has no obvious counterpart in the optical and even NIR images observed with HST at lambda~<1.4um. Photometric-redshift analyses from both…
We present radio spectra spanning $0.1 - 10$ GHz for the sample of heavily obscured luminous quasars with extremely red mid-infrared-optical colors and compact radio emission. The spectra are constructed from targeted 10 GHz observations and archival radio survey data, which together yield $6-11$ flux density measurements for each object. Our suite of Python tools for modeling the radio spectra is publicly available on Github. Our primary result is that most (61%) of the sample have peaked or curved radio spectra and many (36%) could be classified as Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources. Th…
We present the first Chandra/ACIS imaging study of the circumnuclear region of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1365. The X-ray emission is resolved into point-like sources and complex, extended emission. The X-ray morphology of the extended emission shows a biconical soft X-ray emission region extending ~5 kpc in projection from the nucleus, coincident with the high excitation outflow cones seen in optical emission lines particularly to the northwest. Harder X-ray emission is detected from a kpc-diameter circumnuclear ring, coincident with the star-forming ring prominent in the Spitzer mid-infra…
We report on VLT/FORS2 imaging polarimetry observations in the $R_{\rm special}$ band of WISE J011601.41-050504.0 (W0116-0505), a heavily obscured hyper-luminous quasar at $z=3.173$ classified as a Hot, Dust-Obscured Galaxy (Hot DOG) based on its mid-IR colors. Recently, Assef et al. (2020) identified W0116-0505 as having excess rest-frame optical/UV emission, and concluded this excess emission is most likely scattered light from the heavily obscured AGN. We find that the broad-band rest-frame UV flux is strongly linearly polarized (10.8$\pm$1.9\%, with a polarization angle of 74$\pm$9~deg), c…
With high resolution (0."25 x 0."18) ALMA CO 3-2 observations of the nearby (D=21 Mpc, 1"=102 pc), extremely radio-quiet galaxy NGC1377, we have discovered a high-velocity, very collimated nuclear outflow which we interpret as a molecular jet with a projected length of +-150 pc. Along the jet axis we find strong velocity reversals where the projected velocity swings from -150 km/s to +150 km/s. A simple model of a molecular jet precessing around an axis close to the plane of the sky can reproduce the observations. The velocity of the outflowing gas is difficult to constrain due to the velocity…
Over the past decade a new generation of chemical models have included the dust in the treatment of the ISM. This major accomplishment has been spurred by the growing amounts of data on the highly obscured high-z Universe and the intriguing local properties of the Solar Neighbourhood (SoNE). We present here a new model able to simulate the formation and evolution of dust in the ISM. The model follows the evolution of 16 elemental species, with particular attention to those that are simultaneously present in form of gas and dust, e.g. C, N, O, Mg, Si, S, Ca and Fe. In this study we focus on the…
We study the interaction of feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) and a multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM), in simulations including explicit stellar feedback, multi-phase cooling, accretion-disk winds, and Compton heating. We examine radii ~0.1-100 pc around a black hole (BH), where the accretion rate onto the BH is determined and where AGN-powered winds and radiation couple to the ISM. We conclude: (1) The BH accretion rate is determined by exchange of angular momentum between gas and stars in gravitational instabilities. This produces accretion rates ~0.03-1 Msun/yr, sufficient to p…
We present multi-wavelength observations (from optical to sub-millimeter, including Spitzer and SCUBA) of H2XMMJ 003357.2-120038 (also GD158_19), an X-ray selected, luminous narrow-line (Type 2) quasar at z=1.957 selected from the HELLAS2XMM survey. Its broad-band properties can be reasonably well modeled assuming three components: a stellar component to account for the optical and near-IR emission, an AGN component (i.e., dust heated by an accreting active nucleus), dominant in the mid-IR, with an optical depth at 9.7 micron along the line of sight (close to the equatorial plane of the obscur…
The presence of an obscuring torus at pc-scale distances from the central black hole is the main ingredient for the Unified Model of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), as obscured sources are thought to be seen through this structure. However, the Unified Model fails to describe a class of sources that undergo dramatic spectral changes, transitioning from obscured to unobscured and vice-versa through time. The variability in such sources, so-called Changing Look AGN (CLAGN), is thought to be produced by a clumpy medium at much smaller distances than the conventional obscuring torus. ESO 323-G77 is …

We present ALMA band-7 data of the [CII] $\lambda157.74\,μ{\rm m}$ emission line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum for twelve luminous quasars at $z \simeq 4.8$, powered by fast-growing supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Our total sample consists of eighteen quasars, twelve of which are presented here for the first time. The new sources consists of six Herschel/SPIRE detected systems, which we define as "FIR-bright" sources, and six Herschel/SPIRE undetected systems, which we define as "FIR-faint" sources. We determine dust masses for the quasars hosts of $M_{dust} \le 0.2-25.0\times …

From our position embedded within the Milky Way's interstellar medium (ISM), we have limited ability to detect gas at low relative velocities in the extended Galactic halo because those spectral lines are blended with much stronger signals from dense foreground gas. As a result, the content of the Milky Way's circumgalactic medium (CGM) is poorly constrained at $|v_{\rm LSR}|$ $\lesssim$ 150 km s$^{-1}$. To overcome this complication, the QuaStar Survey applies a spectral differencing technique using paired quasar-star sightlines to measure the obscured content of the Milky Way's CGM for the f…
We present ALMA [C II] 158 $μ$m line and far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations toward HSC J120505.09$-$000027.9 (J1205$-$0000) at $z = 6.72$ with the beam size of $\sim 0''.8 \times 0''.5$ (or 4.1 kpc $\times$ 2.6 kpc), the most distant red quasar known to date. Red quasars are modestly reddened by dust, and are thought to be in rapid transition from an obscured starburst to an unobscured normal quasar, driven by powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback which blows out a cocoon of interstellar medium (ISM). The FIR continuum of J1205$-$0000 is bright, with an estimated lumi…
