The misalignment mechanism allows for the efficient, and usually very cold, production of light scalar bosons, such as axion-like particles (ALPs), making them an appealing dark matter candidate. However, in certain cases, such as in the presence of a monodromy, the self-interactions of ALPs can be sufficiently strong such that the homogeneous field fragments soon after the onset of oscillations. The resulting large inhomogeneities can lead to the production of gravitational waves (GWs). We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of fragmentation, as well as of the subsequent turbulent regime, and calculate the stochastic GW background that is produced from this process. The GW background can be enhanced if the time evolution features an extended intermediate phase of ultrarelativistic dynamics due to a small mass at the bottom of the potential. Yet, this enhancement is limited by the requirement that the dark matter remains sufficiently cold. In some cases the resulting GWs may be within reach of future GW detectors, allowing a complementary probe of this type of dark matter.
We analyze the phenomenon of axion fragmentation when an axion field rolls over many oscillations of a periodic potential. This is particularly relevant for the case of relaxion, in which fragmentation provides the necessary energy dissipation to stop the field evolution. We compare the results of a linear analysis with the ones obtained from a classical lattice simulation, finding an agreement in the stopping time of the zero mode between the two within an ${\cal O}(1)$ difference. We finally speculate on the generation of bubbles with different VEVs of the axion field, and discuss their cosm…
We investigate the production of axion quanta during the early universe evolution of an axion-like field rolling down a wiggly potential. We compute the growth of quantum fluctuations and their back-reaction on the homogeneous zero-mode. We evaluate the transfer of kinetic energy from the zero mode to the quantum fluctuations and the conditions to decelerate the axion zero-mode as a function of the Hubble rate, the slope of the potential, the size of the barriers and the initial field velocity. We discuss how these effects impact the relaxion mechanism.
Gravitational waves provide a novel way to probe axions or axion-like particles coupled to a dark photon field, even in the absence of couplings to Standard Model particles. In the conventional misalignment mechanism, the generation of an observable stochastic gravitational wave background, however, requires large axion decay constants. We here investigate the gravitational wave signal generated within the kinetic misalignment scenario, where the axion is assumed to have a large initial velocity. Its kinetic energy then provides a sufficiently high energy budget to generate a detectable gravit…
We calculate the accurate spectrum of the stochastic gravitational wave background from U(1) gauge fields produced by axion dark matter. The explosive production of gauge fields soon invalidates the applicability of the linear analysis and one needs nonlinear schemes. We make use of numerical lattice simulations to properly follow the nonlinear dynamics such as backreaction and rescattering which gives important contributions to the emission of gravitational waves. It turns out that the axion with the decay constant $f \sim 10^{16}$ GeV which gives the correct dark matter abundance predicts th…
In this paper we explore the possibility of observable gravitational waves as a manifestation of the QCD axion dynamics. In particular, we focus on dynamical axion models which solve the strong CP problem, and include the confinement of a QCD-like gauge group at the TeV scale. We study the resulting chiral symmetry breaking phase transition for models with $N_F=3$ and $N_F=4$ light flavors using the linear sigma model. This model describes the scalar meson spectrum and its interactions, with the diagonal field $φ$ as the order parameter. We find that the amplitude of the gravitational wave spe…
An axion rotating in field space can produce dark photons in the early universe via tachyonic instability. This explosive particle production creates a background of stochastic gravitational waves that may be visible at pulsar timing arrays or other gravitational wave detectors. This scenario provides a novel history for dark photon dark matter. The dark photons may be warm at a level detectable in future 21-cm line surveys. For a consistent cosmology, the radial direction of the complex field containing the axion must be thermalized. We explore a concrete thermalization mechanism in detail an…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are a compelling candidate for dark matter (DM), whose production is associated with the formation of a string-wall network. If walls bounded by strings persist, which requires the potential to have multiple local minima ($N>1$), they must annihilate before they become dominant. They annihilate mostly into gravitational waves and non-relativistic ALPs. We show that for ALPs other than the QCD axion these gravitational waves, if produced at temperatures below 100 eV, could be detected by future cosmological probes for ALPs with mass from $10^{-16}$ to $10^{6}$ eV tha…
We have recently shown that axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) may emit an observable stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background when they begin to oscillate in the early universe. In this note, we identify the regions of ALP parameter space which may be probed by future GW detectors, including ground- and space-based interferometers and pulsar timing arrays. Interestingly, these experiments have the ability to probe axions from the bottom up, i.e. in the very weakly coupled regime which is otherwise unconstrained. Furthermore, we discuss the effects of finite dark photon mass and kinet…
We show results for the expected reach of the network of experiments that is being set up globally with the aim of detecting the "invisible" axion, in light of a non-standard thermal history of the universe. Assuming that the axion is the dark matter, we discuss the reach of a successful detection by a given experimental setup in a particular axion mass window for different modifications of the cosmological background before primordial nucleosynthesis occurred. Results are presented both in the case where the present energy budget in cold axions is produced through the vacuum realignment mecha…
The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) collaboration has recently reported strong evidence for a stochastic process affecting the 12.5 yr dataset of pulsar timing residuals. We show that the signal can be interpreted in terms of a stochastic gravitational wave background emitted from a network of axionic strings in the early Universe. The spontaneous breaking of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry originate the axionic string network and the QCD axion, the dark matter particle in the model. We explore a non-standard cosmological model driven by an exotic scalar field…

The primordial irreducible gravitational-wave background due to quantum vacuum tensor fluctuations produced during inflation spans a large range of frequencies with an almost scale-invariant spectrum but is too low to be detected by the next generation of gravitational-wave interferometers. We show how this signal is enhanced by a short temporary kination era in the cosmological history (less than 10 e-folds), that can arise at any energy scale between a GeV and the inflationary scale $10^{16}$ GeV. We argue that such kination era is naturally generated by a spinning axion before it gets trapp…
We establish strong gravitational lens systems as robust probes of axion-like particles (ALPs) -- a candidate for dark matter. A tiny interaction of photons with ALPs induces birefringence. Multiple images of gravitationally lensed polarised objects allow differential birefringence measurement, alleviating systematics and astrophysical dependencies. We apply this novel method to the lens system CLASS B1152+199 and constrain ALP-photon coupling $\le 9.2\times 10^{-11}\, {\rm GeV}^{-1} \textrm{ to } 7.7\times 10^{-8}\, {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ ($95\%$ C.L.) for ALP mass between $3.6\times 10^{-21} \,{\rm…
We show that axion-like particles that only couple to invisible dark photons can generate visible B-mode signals around the reionization epoch. The axion field starts rolling shortly before reionization, resulting in a tachyonic instability for the dark photons. This generates an exponential growth of the dark photon quanta sourcing both scalar metric modes and gravitational waves that leave an imprint on the reionized baryons. The tensor modes modify the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization at reionization, generating visible B-mode signatures for the next generation of CMB experime…
We advocate for the idea that there is a fundamentally new mechanism for axion production on Earth, as recently suggested in Fischer et al. (2018) and Liang & Zhitnitsky (2018). We specifically focus on production of axions within Earth, with low velocities such that they will be trapped in the gravitational field. Our computations are based on the so-called Axion Quark Nugget (AQN) dark matter model, which was originally invented to explain the similarity of the dark and visible cosmological matter densities. This occurs in the model irrespective of the axion mass $m_\mathrm{a}$ or initial mi…

Conventional approaches to probing axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) typically rely on a coupling to photons. However, if this coupling is extremely weak, ALPs become invisible and are effectively decoupled from the Standard Model. Here we show that such invisible axions, which are viable candidates for dark matter, can produce a stochastic gravitational wave background in the early universe. This signal is generated in models where the invisible axion couples to a dark gauge boson that experiences a tachyonic instability when the axion begins to oscillate. Incidentally, the same mechanis…
We study the trispectrum of the gravitational waves (GWs) generated through the dynamics of an axionic spectator field and SU(2) gauge fields during inflation. In non-Abelian gauge theory, the gauge fields have four-point self-interactions, which induce the tree-level GW trispectrum. We formulate this type of the GW trispectrum including the non-dynamical contributions and evaluate it in the equilateral limit as a unique signal of this model. We find that the ratio of the GW trispectrum to the cube of the scalar power spectrum can be as large as $\mathcal{O}(10^6)$ in the viable parameter spac…
Chromo-natural inflation (CNI) is an inflationary model where an axion coupled with SU$(2)$ gauge fields acts as the inflaton. In CNI, the gauge fields have nonzero vacuum expectation values (VEVs), which results in the enhancement of gravitational waves (GWs). The original CNI is ruled out by the Planck observations due to the overproduction of GWs. In this work, we consider an inflationary model where the gauge fields acquire nonzero VEVs after the CMB modes exit the horizon. Moreover, we add to the model another field that dominates the universe and drives inflation after the axion starts t…
The axion objects such as axion mini-clusters and axion clouds around spinning black holes induce parametric resonances of electromagnetic waves through the axion-photon interaction. In particular, it has been known that the resonances from the axion with the mass around $10^{-6}$eV may explain the observed fast radio bursts (FRBs). Here we argue that similar bursts of high frequency gravitational waves, which we call the fast gravitational wave bursts (FGBs), are generated from axion clumps with the presence of gravitational Chern-Simons (CS) coupling. The typical frequency is half of the axi…
Although inflationary models generically predict a flat spectrum of gravitational waves, we point out a general process that produces a sharply peaked spectrum of gravitational radiation. This process is generic for inflationary models with a complex inflaton field which couples to fermions. In particular, for chaotic models these may be the most extreme gravitational waves in the Universe with a very large energy density fraction 10^-9 and ultra-high frequency, 10^10 Hz. Although not amenable to space based interferometers, the signal from this model may be detectable by future table top expe…
The recent report of NANOGrav is gathering attention since its signal can be explained by the stochastic gravitational waves (GWs) with $Ω_{\rm GW}\sim 10^{-9}$ at $f\sim 10^{-8}$Hz. The PBH formation scenario is one of the candidates for the NANOGrav signal, which can simultaneously explain the observed $30 M_\odot$ black holes in the binary merger events in LIGO-Virgo collaboration. We focus on the type II axion-like curvaton model of the PBH formation. In type II model the complex field whose phase part is the axion rolls down from the origin of the potential. It is found that type II model…
The axion is a motivated cold dark matter candidate, which it would be interesting to distinguish from weakly interacting massive particles. Sikivie has suggested that axions could behave differently during non-linear galaxy evolution, if they form a Bose-Einstein condensate, and argues that ``gravitational thermalisation'' drives them to a Bose-Einstein condensate during the radiation dominated era. Using classical equations of motion during linear structure formation, we explore whether the gravitational interactions of axions can generate entropy. At linear order in Newton's constant, we in…
Inspired by the recent determination of the $W$-boson mass by the CDF collaboration, we revisit an $SO(10)$ axion model in which a scalar $SU(2)_L$ triplet field with zero hypercharge is known to acquire a non-zero VEV through its mixing with the Standard Model Higgs doublet. The triplet VEV provides a sizable contribution to the $W$ mass, which helps in significantly lowering the $7σ$ discrepancy between the Standard Model prediction and the higher CDF value for $m_W$. We show that the relatively light triplet mass ($\sim (1-50)$ TeV) is compatible with gauge coupling unification and observab…
A pseudoscalar inflaton $φ$, coupled to the topological charge density $F\tilde{F}$ of a non-Abelian sector, can decay to gauge bosons ($φ\to g g $), which may thermalize rapidly. The friction felt by $φ$ is then increased by non-Abelian "strong sphalerons", leading to a self-amplifying process that can efficiently heat up the medium. We determine a lower bound for the gravitational wave production rate from such a process, originating via hydrodynamic fluctuations and particle collisions, in terms of a minimal number of parameters. Only a moderate fraction of energy density is converted to gr…
We study the problem of axion-photon coupling in the magnetic field influenced by gravitational radiation. We focus on exact solutions to the equations for axion electrodynamics in the pp-wave gravitational background for two models with initially constant magnetic field. The first model describes the response of an initially constant magnetic field in a gravitational-wave vacuum with unit refraction index; the second model is characterized by a non-unit refraction index prescribed to the presence of ordinary and/or dark matter. We show that both models demonstrate anomalous behavior of the el…
Axion is a popular candidate for dark matter particles. Axionic dark matter may form Bose-Einstein condensate and may be gravitationally bound to form axion clumps. Under the presence of electromagnetic waves with frequency $ω=m_{a}/2$, where $m_{a}$ is the axion mass, a resonant enhancement may occur, causing an instability of the axion clumps. With analytical and numerical approaches, we study the resonant instability of axionic dark matter clumps with infinite homogeneous mass distribution, as well as distribution with a finite boundary. After taking realistic astrophysical environments int…
In the axion monodromy inflation, the inflation is driven by the axion with super-Planckian field values in a monomial potential with superimposed sinusoidal modulations. The coupling of the axion to massless gauge fields can induce copious particle production during inflation, resulting in large non-Gaussian curvature perturbation that leads to the formation of primordial black holes. In this paper, we explore the parameter space in the axion monodromy inflation model that favors the formation of primordial black holes with masses ranging from $10^8$ grams to $20$ solar masses. We also study …
Axion monodromy is a generic phenomenon in string compactifications. We investigate the production of gravitational-wave background from axion monodromy inflation during preheating. By performing lattice simulations using pseudo-spectral methods, we find that significant single-peak stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds are generated during preheating for asymptotic linear $|ϕ|$ and $ϕ^{2/3}$ potentials in axion monodromy inflation and cuspy potentials. This may allow us to explore string compactifications through gravitational waves.
We revisit the framework of axion-like inflation in view of the possibility that the coupling of the inflaton to a non-Abelian topological charge density could lead to the generation of a rapidly thermalizing heat bath. Both dispersive (mass) and absorptive (friction) effects are included. For phenomenologically viable parameters, the system remains in a weak regime of warm inflation (thermal friction $\ll$ Hubble rate). For tensor perturbations we derive an interpolating formula that incorporates both vacuum and thermal production. The latter yields a model-independent frequency shape $\sim f…
The axion solution to the strong CP problem is delicately sensitive to Peccei-Quinn breaking contributions that are misaligned with respect to QCD instantons. Heavy QCD axion models are appealing because they avoid this so-called "quality problem". We show that generic realizations of this framework can be probed by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA interferometers, through the stochastic gravitational wave (GW) signal sourced by the long-lived axionic string-domain wall network, and by upcoming measurements of the neutron and proton Electric Dipole Moments. Additionally, we provide predictions for searche…
We investigate the cosmological constraints on axion models where the domain wall number is greater than one. In these models, multiple domain walls attached to strings are formed, and they survive for a long time. Their annihilation occurs due to the effects of explicit symmetry breaking term which might be raised by Planck-scale physics. We perform three-dimensional lattice simulations and compute the spectra of axions and gravitational waves produced by long-lived domain walls. Using the numerical results, we estimated relic density of axions and gravitational waves. We find that the existe…
A non-negligible fraction of the QCD axion dark matter may form gravitationally bound Bose Einstein condensates, which are commonly known as axion stars or axion clumps. Such astrophysical objects have been recently proposed as the cause for the single candidate event reported by Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) microlensing search in the Andromeda galaxy. Depending on the breaking scale of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry and the details of the dark matter scenario, QCD axion clumps may form via gravitational condensation during radiation domination, in the dense core of axion miniclusters, or within …
In this work, we present a lattice study of an axion - dark photon system in the early Universe and show that the stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background produced by this system may be probed by future GW experiments across a vast range of frequencies. The numerical simulation on the lattice allows us to take into account non-linear backreaction effects and enables us to accurately predict the final relic abundance of the axion or axion-like particle (ALP) as well as its inhomogeneities, and gives a more precise prediction of the GW spectrum. Importantly, we find that the GW spectrum has…
We study derivatively coupled fermions in axion-driven inflation, specifically $m_ϕ^2ϕ^2$ and monodromy inflation, and calculate particle production during the inflationary epoch and the post-inflationary axion oscillations. During inflation, the rolling axion acts as an effective chemical potential for helicity which biases the gravitational production of one fermion helicity over the other. This mechanism allows for efficient gravitational production of heavy fermion states that would otherwise be highly suppressed. Following inflation, the axion oscillates and fermions with both helicities …
Axions are a viable candidate for Cold Dark Matter (CDM) which should generically form minihalos of sub-planetary masses from white-noise isocurvature density fluctuations if the Peccei-Quinn phase transition occurs after inflation. Despite being denser than the larger halos formed out of adiabatic fluctuations from inflation, axion minihalos have surface densities much smaller than the critical value required for gravitational lensing to produce multiple images or high magnification, and hence are practically undetectable as lenses in isolation. However, their lensing effect can be enhanced w…
We study the ultralight axion dark matter with mass around $10^{-22}$ eV in $f(R)$ gravity which might resolve the dark energy problem. In particular, we focus on the fact that the pressure of the axion field oscillating in time produces oscillations of gravitational potentials. We show that the oscillation of the gravitational potential is sensitive to the model of gravity. Remarkably, we find that the detectability of the oscillation through the gravitational wave detectors can be significantly enhanced due to the nonlinear resonance between the ultralight axion and the scalaron.
We consider a gauge-singlet complex scalar field $Φ$ with a global $U(1)$ symmetry that is spontaneously broken at some high energy scale $f_a$. As a result, the angular part of the $Φ$-field becomes an axion-like particle (ALP). We show that if the $Φ$-field has a non-zero coupling $κ$ to the Standard Model Higgs boson, there exists a certain region in the $\left(f_a, κ\right)$ parameter space where the global $U(1)$ symmetry-breaking induces a strongly first order phase transition, thereby producing stochastic gravitational waves that are potentially observable in current and future gravitat…
In the framework of axion-gauge fields models, primordial gravitational wave perturbations could be generated during the inflationary epoch from not only the quantum fluctuation of gravitons but also the dynamics of hidden gauge fields coupled with an axion field. We investigate the evolution of the axion and the gauge field of an additional hidden SU(2) gauge group and those energy densities during and after the inflation. We show that the extra radiation component of the hidden gauge bosons produced by the axion decay can be sizable in the cases where the gauge fields sourced additional grav…
We study the dynamics of the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) phase transition for the QCD axion. In weakly coupled models the transition is typically second order except in the region of parameters where the PQ symmetry is broken through the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. In strongly coupled realizations the transition is often first order. We show examples where the phase transition leads to strong supercooling lowering the nucleation temperature and enhancing the stochastic gravitational wave signals. The models predict a frequency peak in the range 100-1000 Hz with an amplitude that is already within the se…
