Recent observations of neutron stars with gravitational waves and X-ray timing provide unprecedented access to the equation of state (EoS) of cold dense matter at densities difficult to realize in terrestrial experiments. At the same time, predictions for the EoS with reliable uncertainty estimates from chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) bound our theoretical ignorance. In this work, we analyze astrophysical data using a nonparametric representation of the neutron-star EoS conditioned on $χ$EFT to directly constrain the underlying physical properties of the compact objects. We discuss how the data alone constrain the EoS at high densities when we condition on $χ$EFT at low densities. We also demonstrate how to exploit astrophysical data to directly test the predictions of $χ$EFT for the EoS up to twice nuclear saturation density, and estimate the density at which these predictions might break down. We find that the existence of massive pulsars, gravitational waves from GW170817, and NICER observations of PSR J0030+0451 favor $χ$EFT predictions for the EoS up to nuclear saturation density over a more agnostic analysis by as much as a factor of 7 for the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations used in this work. While $χ$EFT predictions using QMC are fully consistent with gravitational-wave data up to twice nuclear saturation density, NICER observations suggest that the EoS stiffens relative to these predictions at nuclear saturation density. Additionally, we marginalize over the uncertainty in the density at which $χ$EFT begins to break down, constraining the radius of a $1.4\,M_\odot$ neutron star to $R_{1.4}=11.40^{+1.38}_{-1.04}$ ($12.54^{+0.71}_{-0.63}$) km and the pressure at twice nuclear saturation density to $p(2n_\mathrm{sat})=14.2^{+18.1}_{-8.4}$ ($28.7^{+15.3}_{-15.0}$) MeV/fm$^3$ with massive pulsar and gravitational-wave (and NICER) data.
At supranuclear densities, explored in the core of neutron stars, a strong phase transition from hadronic matter to more exotic forms of matter might be present. To test this hypothesis, binary neutron-star mergers offer a unique possibility to probe matter at densities that we can not create in any existing terrestrial experiment. In this work, we show that, if present, strong phase transitions can have a measurable imprint on the binary neutron-star coalescence and the emitted gravitational-wave signal. We construct a new parameterization of the supranuclear equation of state that allows us …
We report the results of a study aimed at inferring direct information on the repulsive three-nucleon potential $V^R_{ijk}$\textemdash driving the stiffness of the nuclear matter equation of state at supranuclear densities\textemdash from astrophysical observations. Using a Bayesian approach, we exploit the measurements of masses, radii and tidal deformabalities performed by the NICER satellite and the LIGO/Virgo collaboration, as well as the mass of the heaviest observed pulsar, to constrain the strength of $V^R_{ijk}$. The baseline of our analysis is the widely employed nuclear Hamiltonian c…

Realistic nuclear level densities (NLDs) obtained within the spectral distribution method (SDM) are employed to study nuclear processes of astrophysical interest. The merit of SDM lies in the fact that the NLDs corresponding to many body shell model Hamiltonian consisting of residual interaction can be obtained for the full configurational space without recourse to the exact diagnolization of huge matrices. We calculate NLDs and s-wave neutron resonance spacings which agree reasonably well with the available experimental data. By employing these NLDs, we compute reaction cross-sections and ast…

The properties of matter at ultra-high densities, low temperatures, and with a significant asymmetry between protons and neutrons can be studied exclusively through astrophysical observations of neutron stars. We show that measurements of the masses and radii of neutron stars can lead to tight constraints on the pressure of matter at three fiducial densities, from 1.85 to 7.4 times the density of nuclear saturation, in a manner that is largely model-independent and that captures the key characteristics of the equation of state. We demonstrate that observations with 10% uncertainties of at leas…
We present an updated general purpose nuclear equation of state (EoS) for use in simulations of core-collapse supernovae, neutron star mergers and black hole collapse. This EoS is formulated in the context of Density Functional Theory (DFT) and is generalized to include all DFT EoSs consistent with known nuclear and astrophysical constraints. This EoS also allows for the possibility of the formation of material with a net proton excess ($Y_p > 0.5$) and has an improved treatment of the nuclear statistical equilibrium and the transition to heavy nuclei as the density approaches nuclear matter d…
Gravitational wave observations of GW170817 placed bounds on the tidal deformabilities of compact stars allowing one to probe equations of state for matter at supranuclear densities. Here we design new parametrizations for hybrid hadron-quark equations of state, that give rise to low-mass twin stars, and test them against GW170817. We find that GW170817 is consistent with the coalescence of a binary hybrid star--neutron star. We also test and find that the I-Love-Q relations for hybrid stars in the third family agree with those for purely hadronic and quark stars within $\sim 3\%$ for both slo…
The LIGO/Virgo collaboration has recently announced the direct detection of gravitational waves emitted in the coalescence of a neutron star binary. This discovery allows, for the first time, to set new constraints on the behavior of matter at supranuclear density, complementary with those coming from astrophysical observations in the electromagnetic band. In this paper we demonstrate the feasibility of using gravitational signals to solve the relativistic inverse stellar problem, i.e. to reconstruct the parameters of the equation of state (EoS) from measurements of the stellar mass and tidal …
We demonstrate in a general and analytic way how high-density information about the equation of state (EoS) of strongly interacting matter obtained using perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) constrains the same EoS at densities reachable in physical neutron stars. Our approach is based on utilizing the full information of the thermodynamic potentials at the high-density limit together with thermodynamic stability and causality. This requires considering the pressure as a function of chemical potential $p(μ)$ instead of the commonly used pressure as a function of energy density $p(ε)$. Th…

The nuclear mean-field potentials obtained in the Hartree-Fock method with different choices of the in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction have been used to study the equation of state (EOS) of the neutron star (NS) matter. The EOS of the uniform NS core has been calculated for the np$eμ$ composition in the $β$-equilibrium at zero temperature, using version Sly4 of the Skyrme interaction as well as two density-dependent versions of the finite-range M3Y interaction (CDM3Y$n$ and M3Y-P$n$), and versions D1S and D1N of the Gogny interaction. Although the considered effective NN interactions w…
Observations of neutron stars (NSs) by the LIGO-Virgo and NICER collaborations have provided reasonably precise measurements of their various macroscopic properties. In this paper, we employ a Bayesian framework to combine them and place improved joint constraints on the properties of NS equation of state (EoS). We use a hybrid EoS formulation that employs a parabolic expansion-based nuclear empirical parameterization around the nuclear saturation density augmented by a generic 3-segment piecewise polytrope model at higher densities. Within the $90 \%$ credible level this parameterization pred…
The strong interaction at low energy scales determines the equation of state (EOS) of supranuclear matters in neutron stars (NSs). It is conjectured that the bulk dense matter may be composed of strangeons, which are quark clusters with nearly equal numbers of $u$, $d$, and $s$ quarks. To characterize the strong-repulsive interaction at short distance and the nonrelativistic nature of strangeons, a phenomenological Lennard-Jones model with two parameters is used to describe the EOS of strangeon stars (SSs). For the first time, we investigate the oscillation modes of non-rotating SSs and obtain…
Determining the Equation of State (EOS) of dense neutron-rich nuclear matter is a shared goal of both nuclear physics and astrophysics. Except possible phase transitions, the density dependence of nuclear symmetry \esym is the most uncertain part of the EOS of neutron-rich nucleonic matter especially at supra-saturation densities. Much progresses have been made in recent years in predicting the symmetry energy and understanding why it is still very uncertain using various microscopic nuclear many-body theories and phenomenological models. Simultaneously, significant progresses have also been m…
We describe and implement a procedure for determining the couplings of a Relativistic Mean-Field Theory (RMFT) that is optimized for application to neutron star phenomenology. In the standard RMFT approach, the couplings are constrained by comparing the theory's predictions for symmetric matter at saturation density with measured nuclear properties. The theory is then applied to neutron stars which consist of neutron-rich matter at densities ranging up to several times saturation density, which allows for additional astrophysical constraints. In our approach, rather than using the RMFT to extr…
Nuclear physics offers us a powerful tool: using nuclear resonance absorption lines to infer the physical conditions in astrophysical settings which are otherwise difficult to deduce. Present-day technology provides an increase in sensitivity over previous gamma-ray missions large enough to utilize this tool for the first time. The most exciting promise is to measure gamma-ray bursts from the first star(s) at redshifts 20-60, but also active galactic nuclei are promising targets.
The dynamics of coalescing compact binaries can be affected by the environment in which the systems evolve, leaving detectable signatures into the emitted gravitational signal. In this paper we investigate the ability of gravitational-wave detectors to constrain the nature of the environment in which compact binaries merge. We parametrize a variety of environmental effects by modifying the phase of the gravitational signal emitted by black hole and neutron star binaries. We infer the bounds on such effects by current and future generation of interferometers, studying their dependence on the bi…
Compact stars (CS) are stellar remnants of massive stars. Inside CSs the density is so high that matter is in subatomic form composed of nucleons. With increase of density of matter towards the centre of the objects other degrees of freedom like hyperons, heavier non-strange baryons, meson condensates may appear. Not only that at higher densities, the nucleons may get decomposed into quarks and form deconfined strange quark matter (SQM). If it is so then CSs may contain SQM in the core surrounded by nucleonic matter forming hybrid stars (HSs). However, the nature and composition of matter insi…
The determination of astrophysical reaction rates requires different approaches depending on the conditions in hydrostatic and explosive burning. The focus here is on astrophysical reaction rates for radiative neutron capture reactions. Relevant nucleosynthesis processes not only involve the s-process but also the i-, r- and $γ$-processes, which from the nuclear perspective mainly differ in the relative interaction energies of neutrons and nuclei, and in the nuclear level densities of the involved nuclei. Emphasis is put on the difference between reactions at low and high temperature. Possible…
