We constrain and update the bounds on the life-time of a decaying dark matter model with a warm massive daughter particle using the most recent low-redshift probes. We use Supernovae Type-Ia, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and the time delay measurements of gravitationally lensed quasars. These data sets are complemented by the early universe priors taken from the Cosmic Microwave background. For the maximum allowed fraction of the relativistic daughter particle, the updated bounds on the life-time are found to be $τ> 9\, \rm{Gyr}$ and $τ>11\,\rm{Gyr}$ at $95\%$ C.L., for the two-body and many-body decay scenarios, respectively. We also comment on the recent proposal that the current two-body decaying dark matter model can provide resolution for the $H_0$-tension, by contrasting against the standard $Λ$CDM model. We infer that the current dark matter decaying scenario is unlikely to alleviate the $H_0$-tension. We find that the decaying dark matter is able to reduce the trend of the decreasing $H_0$ values with increasing lens redshifts observed in the strong lensing dataset.
We study the cosmological effects of two-body dark matter decays where the products of the decay include a massless and a massive particle. We show that if the massive daughter particle is slightly warm it is possible to relieve the tension between distance ladder measurements of the present day Hubble parameter with measurements from the cosmic microwave background.
In supersymmetric axion models, if the gravitino or axino is the lightest SUSY particle (LSP), the other is often the next-to-LSP (NLSP). We investigate the cosmology of such a scenario and point out that the lifetime of the NLSP naturally becomes comparable to the present age of the universe in a viable parameter region. This is a well-motivated example of the so-called decaying dark matter model, which is recently considered as an extension of the $Λ$CDM model to relax some cosmological tensions.
It has been suggested that late-universe dark matter decays can alleviate the tension between measurements of $H_0$ in the local universe and its value inferred from cosmic microwave background fluctuations. It has been suggested that decaying dark matter can potentially account for this discrepancy as it reshuffles the energy density between matter and radiation and as a result allows dark energy to become dominant at earlier times. In this work, we show that the low multipole amplitude of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy power spectrum severely constrains the feasibility of late-ti…
If a fraction of the dark matter is unstable and decays into dark radiation at around the time of matter-radiation equality, it could impact the expansion history of the universe in a way that helps to ameliorate the long-standing tension between the locally measured value of the Hubble constant and the value inferred from measurements of the cosmic microwave background and baryon acoustic oscillations (assuming standard $Λ$CDM cosmology). If this component of decaying dark matter is cold, however, it will modify the evolution of the gravitational potentials, leading to inconsistencies with th…
Decaying cold dark matter (CDM) has been considered as a mechanism to tackle the tensions in the Hubble expansion rate and the clustering of matter. However, polarization measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) severely constrain the fraction of dark matter decaying before recombination, and lensing of the CMB anisotropies by large-scale structure set strong constraints on dark matter decaying after recombination. Together, these constraints make an explanation of the Hubble tension in terms of decaying dark matter unlikely. In response to this situation, we investigate whether a…
The first result of AMS-02 confirms the positron fraction excess observed by PAMELA, but the spectrum is somewhat softer than that of PAMELA. In the dark matter (DM) interpretation it brings a tension between AMS-02 and Fermi-LAT, which reported an excess of the electron plus positron flux. In this work we point out that the asymmetric cosmic ray from asymmetric dark matter (ADM) decay relaxes the tension. It is found that in the case of two-body decay a bosonic ADM around 2.4 TeV and decaying into $μ^-τ^+$ can significantly improve the fits. Based on the $R-$parity-violating supersymmetry wit…
It has long been known that the sharpened tension between the observed and inferred values of the Hubble constant $H_0$ can be alleviated if a fraction of dark matter particles of type $χ$ were produced non-thermally in association with photons $γ$ through the decays of a heavy and relatively long-lived state, viz. $X \to χ+ γ$. It was recently proposed that this model can also resolve the longstanding lithium problem if $M= 4$ MeV and $m = 0.04$ keV, where $M$ and $m$ are respectively the masses of $X$ and $χ$. We confront this proposal with experiment and demonstrate that cold dark matter de…
Current tensions in cosmology, including $H_0$ and $σ_8$, provide one of the strong reasons to suspect the existence of physics beyond the standard model of cosmology ($Λ$CDM). In this paper, we investigate if there is a relation between these tensions and beyond cold dark matter scenarios. To model non-CDM, we assume a decaying dark matter (DDM) which is unstable and may decay into two daughter particles, a combination of cold dark matter, warm dark matter, and dark radiation, to explore a vast era of possibilities. We checked our model against CMB data and could show that decaying dark matte…
The '$S_8$ tension' is a longstanding discrepancy between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and weak gravitational lensing determination of the amplitude of matter fluctuations, parametrized as $S_8\equivσ_8(Ω_m/0.3)^{0.5}$, where $σ_8$ is the root mean square of matter fluctuations on a 8 $h^{-1}$Mpc scale, and $Ω_m$ is the total matter abundance. It was recently shown that dark matter (DM) decaying into a massless (dark radiation) and a massive (warm DM) species, with a lifetime $Γ^{-1} \simeq 55~(\varepsilon/0.007)^{1.4}$ Gyrs -- where $\varepsilon$ represent the mass-energy fraction tr…
In supersymmetric theories, cosmic strings produced in the early Universe often have a width of TeV scale, while the tension is much larger. In a scaling regime, an infinite cosmic string releases significant fraction of its energy in the form of string loops. These thick string loops lose their energies efficiently by particle emissions, and hence it may have effects on cosmological observations. We study cosmological implications of string loops with TeV scale width in detail and derive constraints on the tension of the string. Implications on future gravitational wave detectors are also dis…
Decaying dark matter models provide a physically motivated way of channeling energy between the matter and radiation sectors. In principle, this could affect the predicted value of the Hubble constant in such a way as to accommodate the discrepancies between CMB inferences and local measurements of the same. Here, we revisit the model of warm dark matter decaying non-relativistically to invisible radiation. In particular, we rederive the background and perturbation equations starting from a decaying neutrino model and describe a new, computationally efficient method of computing the decay prod…
We consider decaying dark matter (DDM) as a resolution to the possible tension between cosmic microwave background (CMB) and weak lensing (WL) based determinations of the amplitude of matter fluctuations, $σ_8$. We perform N-body simulations in a model where dark matter decays into dark radiation and develop an accurate fitting formula for the non-linear matter power spectrum, which enables us to test the DDM model by the combined measurements of CMB, WL and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO). We employ a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis to examine the overlap of posterior distributions of…
I present the first constraints on decaying cold dark matter (DCDM) models thanks to the effective field theory of large-scale structure (EFTofLSS) applied to BOSS-DR12 data. I consider two phenomenological models of DCDM: i) a model where a fraction $f_{\rm dcdm}$ of cold dark matter (CDM) decays into dark radiation (DR) with a lifetime $τ$; ii) a model (recently suggested as a potential resolution to the $S_8$ tension) where all the CDM decays with a lifetime $τ$ into DR and a massive warm dark matter (WDM) particle, with a fraction $\varepsilon$ of the CDM rest mass energy transferred to th…
Recent weak lensing surveys have revealed that the direct measurement of the parameter combination $S_8\equivσ_8(Ω_m/0.3)^{0.5}$ -- where $σ_8$ is a measure of the amplitude of matter fluctuations on 8 $h^{-1}$Mpc scales -- is $\sim3σ$ discrepant with the value reconstructed from cosmic microwave background (CMB) data assuming the $Λ$CDM model. In this article, we show that it is possible to resolve the tension if dark matter (DM) decays with a lifetime of $Γ^{-1} \simeq 55 \ \text{Gyrs}$ into one massless and one massive product, and transfers a fraction $\varepsilon\simeq 0.7 \ \%$ of its re…
An only early or only late time alteration to $Λ$CDM has been inadequate at resolving both the $H_0$ and $S_8$ tensions simultaneously; however, a combination of early and late time alterations to $Λ$CDM can provide a solution to both tensions. As an illustration, we examine a combined Early Dark Energy - Decaying Dark Matter model. While early dark energy has the ability to resolve the $H_0$ tension, it leads to a discrepancy in $S_8$ measurements. We show that the addition of decaying dark matter helps resolve the $S_8$ discrepancy that would otherwise be enhanced in an early dark energy mod…
Although the standard ΛCDM model describes the cosmic microwave background radiation and the large scale structure of the Universe with great success, it has some tensions with observations in the effective number of neutrino species (dark radiation) and the number of small scale structures (overabundance problem). Here we propose a scenario which can relax these tensions by producing both dark matter and dark radiation by late decays of heavy particle. Thanks to the generation mechanism, dark matters are rather warm so that the small-scale structure problem is resolved. This scenario can be n…
The Hubble tension between the $Λ$CDM-model-dependent prediction of the current expansion rate $H_0$ using Planck data and direct, model-independent measurements in the local universe from the SH0ES collaboration disagree at $>3.5σ$. Moreover, there exists a milder $\sim 2σ$ tension between similar predictions for the amplitude $S_8$ of matter fluctuations and its measurement in the local universe. As explanations relying on unresolved systematics have not been found, theorists have been exploring explanations for these anomalies that modify the cosmological model, altering early-universe-base…
We consider a cosmological model in which a fraction $f$ of the Dark Matter (DM) is allowed to decay in an invisible relativistic component, and compute the resulting constraints on both the decay width (or inverse lifetime) $Γ$ and $f$ from purely gravitational arguments. We report a full derivation of the Boltzmann hierarchy, correcting a mistake in previous literature, and compute the impact of the decay --as a function of the lifetime-- on the CMB and matter power spectra. From CMB only, we obtain that no more than 3.8 % of the DM could have decayed in the time between recombination and to…
Decaying Cold Dark Matter (DCDM) is a model that is currently under investigation regarding primarily the $S_8$ tension between cosmic microwave background (CMB) and certain large-scale structure measurements. The decay into one massive and one (or more) massless daughter particle(s) leads to a suppression of the power spectrum in the late universe that depends on the relative mass splitting $ε=(1-m^2/M^2)/2$ between the mother and massive daughter particle as well as the lifetime $τ$. In this work we investigate the impact of the BOSS DR14 one-dimensional Lyman-$α$ forest flux power spectrum …
It has been recently suggested~\cite{Berezhiani:2015yta} that emerging tension between cosmological parameter values derived in high-redshift (CMB anisotropy) and low-redshift (cluster counts, Hubble constant) measurements can be reconciled in a model which contains subdominant fraction of dark matter decaying after recombination. We check the model against the CMB Planck data. We find that lensing of the CMB anisotropies by the large-scale structure gives strong extra constraints on this model, limiting the fraction as $F<8\%$ at 2\,$σ$ confidence level. However, investigating the combined da…
We present a dark sector model addressing both the Hubble tension and the core-cusp problem. The model is based on a hidden Abelian gauge symmetry group with some chiral fermions required by the anomaly cancellation conditions, producing a candidate for the decaying fermion dark matter as a solution to the Hubble tension. Moreover, the sub-keV mass regime and the thermal history of the dark sector help the dark matter candidate resolve the core-cusp problem occurring in the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology.
We present a model in which the question about a nature of the dark energy and the recently raised Hubble tension can be addressed at once. We consider the electroweak axion in the minimal supersymmetric standard model where the axion energy density is identified with the observed dark energy. Along with this, imposing a gauged $Z_{10}$ symmetry makes it possible to have a gravitino dark matter whose mass amounts to $\sim\mathcal{O}(1)\,\,{\rm GeV}$. We find that the gravitino with mass $\sim\mathcal{O}(1)\,\,{\rm GeV}$ can be a good candidate of a decaying dark matter of which decay after rec…
We investigate a mechanism for the production of self-interacting dark matter based on WIMP-like messenger state decays into dark matter and dark radiation occurring after recombination. Such a transition leads to a mild relaxation of the Hubble tension, and at the same time may resolve the small-scale structure problems of the $Λ$CDM. We illustrate this mechanism in the Higgs portal dark matter model, which we find to be a promising route.
An excess in the electronic recoil data was observed in the XENON1T detector. One of plausible explanations for the excess is absorption of a vector bosonic particle with the mass of $2-3\,{\rm keV}$. For this, the kinetic mixing $κ\!\sim\!10^{-15}$ of the dark photon with the photon is required if the dark photon explains the current DM abundance. We recently proposed a model where the main component DM today is a decaying warm dark matter (WDM) with the life time comparable to the age of the current universe. The WDM decays to a massless fermion and a massive dark photon. This model was orig…
In this work, we investigate the dark sector of a supersymmetric axion model, consisting of the late-decaying gravitino/axino dark matter and axion dark radiation. In the early universe, the decay of the scalar superpartner of the axion (saxion) will produce a large amount of entropy. The additional entropy can not only dilute the relic density of the gravitino/axino dark matter to avoid overclosing the universe but also relax the constraint on the reheating temperature $T_{R}$ after inflation. Meanwhile, the axion dark radiation from the saxion decay will increase the effective number of neut…
It has been recently suggested~\cite{Berezhiani:2015yta} that a subdominant fraction of dark matter decaying after recombination may alleviate tension between high-redshift (CMB anisotropy) and low-redshift (Hubble constant, cluster counts) measurements. In this report, we continue our previous study~\cite{Chudaykin:2016yfk} of the decaying dark matter (DDM) model adding all available recent baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and redshift space distortions (RSD) measurements. We find, that the BAO/RSD measurements generically prefer the standard $Λ$CDM and combined with other cosmological measu…
In this paper we update the constraints on the simple decaying cold dark matter (DCDM) model with dark radiation (DR) as decay product. We consider two different regimes of the lifetime, i.e. short-lived and long-lived, and use the most recent CMB data from Planck (2018) to infer new constraints on the decay parameters with which we compare the constraints inferred by the previous Planck data (2015). We hereby show that the newest CMB data constrains the fractional amount of DCDM twice as much as the previous data in the long-lived regime, leading to our current best 2$σ$ upper bound of $f_{\r…
We study a dark matter production mechanism based on decays of a messenger WIMP-like state into a pair of dark matter particles that are self-interacting via exchange of a light mediator. Its distinctive thermal history allows the mediator to be stable and therefore avoid strong limits from the cosmic microwave background and indirect detection. A natural by-product of this mechanism is a possibility of a late time, i.e., after recombination, transition to subdominant dark radiation component through three-body and one-loop decays to states containing the light mediator. We examine to what ext…
A variation of sneutrino inflation based on chi^2 potential is considered where the inflaton and the late-decaying field are sneutrinos of different generations. The lighter, late-decaying sneutrino dilutes the gravitinos over-produced after inflaton decay and generates the matter asymmetry. It can also significantly contribute to the curvature perturbation, realizing the mixed inflaton-curvaton case. The cosmic microwave background (CMB) observables can distinguish this case from inflation with chi^2 potential, provided that the initial value of the late-decaying sneutrino is either an order …
By focusing on the simple $w\neq-1$ extension to $Λ$CDM, we assess which epoch(s) possibly source the $H_0$-tension. We consider Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data in three possible ways: $i)$ complete CMB data; $ii)$ excluding the $l<30$ temperature and polarization likelihoods; $iii)$ imposing early universe priors, that disentangle early and late time physics. Through a joint analysis with low-redshift supernovae type-Ia and gravitationally lensed time delay datasets, {and neglecting galaxy clustering Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data}, we find that the inclusion of early univers…
We examine the decay vacuum model with a parameter $ε$ that indicates the vacuum energy decay rate. By constraining this model with cosmic microwave background radiation, baryon acoustic oscillation, type Ia supernovae and 30 H(z) cosmic chronometer data points, we find that $ε=-0.0003\pm0.00024$ with the best fitted $χ^{2}$ value slightly smaller than that in the $Λ$CDM model. A negative value of $ε$ suggesting dark matter energy decay into vacuum energy. We also obtain the Hubble constant $H_{0}=68.05\pm0.56$ that can alleviate the current $H_{0}$ tension between the local observation by the…
A large number of studies, all using Bayesian parameter inference from Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, have constrained the presence of a decaying dark matter component. All such studies find a strong preference for either very long-lived or very short-lived dark matter. However, in this letter, we demonstrate that this preference is due to parameter volume effects that drive the model towards the standard $Λ$CDM model, which is known to provide a good fit to most observational data. Using profile likelihoods, which are free from volume effects, we instead find that the best-fitting paramete…
The Hubble tension, if not caused by any systematics, could be relieved or even resolved from modifying either the early-time or late-time Universe. The early-time modifications are usually in tension with either galaxy clustering or galaxy lensing constraints. The late-time modifications are also in conflict with the constraint from the inverse distance ladder, which, however, is weakened by the dependence on a sound-horizon prior and some particular approximation for the late-time expansion history. To achieve a more general no-go argument for the late-time scenarios, we propose to use a glo…
The long standing anomaly in the positron flux as measured by the PAMELA and AMS-02 experiments could potentially be explained by dark matter (DM) annihilations. This scenario typically requires a large "boost factor" to be consistent with a thermal relic dark matter candidate produced via freeze-out. However, such an explanation is disfavored by constraints from CMB observations on energy deposition during the epoch of recombination. We discuss a scenario called late-decaying two-component dark matter (LD2DM), where the entire DM consists of two semi-degenerate species. Within this framework,…
We point out that 7 keV axino dark matter (DM) in the R-parity violating (RPV) supersymmetric (SUSY) Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky model can simultaneously reproduce the 3.5keV X-ray excess, and evade stringent constraints from the Ly-alpha forest data. Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking naturally generates both axino interactions with minimal SUSY standard model particles and RPV interactions. The RPV interaction introduces an axino-neutrino mixing and provides axino DM as a variant of sterile neutrino DM, whose decay into a monochromatic photon can be detected by X-ray observations. Axinos,…
We consider General Relativity with matter and radiation, one of these fluids being coupled to vacuum. We find that Universe dynamics starts by an inflation phase if the coupled fluid has a negative energy density at early time. Then, there is always a finite scale factor singularity but when vacuum and matter are coupled and matter density behaves like a negative radiation density. Moreover, the convergence to the LCDM model is clearly easier to reach when vacuum is coupled to matter rather than to radiation. Two classes of theories are studied to illustrate these results.
The Hubble tension seems to be a crisis with $\sim5σ$ discrepancy between the most recent local distance ladder measurement from type Ia supernovae calibrated by Cepheids and the global fitting constraint from the cosmic microwave background data. To narrow down the possible late-time solutions to the Hubble tension, we have used in a recent study [Phys. Rev. D 105, L021301 (2022)] an improved inverse distance ladder method calibrated by the absolute measurements of the Hubble expansion rate at high redshifts from the cosmic chronometer data, and found no appealing evidence for new physics at …
We consider scenario of the dark matter consisting of two fractions, stable part being dominant and a smaller unstable fraction, which has decayed after the recombination epoch. It has been suggested in Ref. [arxiv:1505.03644] that the above scenario may alleviate tension between high-redshift (CMB anisotropy) and low-redshift (cepheid variables and SNe Ia, cluster counts) cosmological measurements. We derive constraints on the heavy relics branching to $q\bar{q}$, $e^+e^-$, $μ^+μ^-$, $τ^+τ^-$, $ν_e\bar{ν_e}$, $ν_μ\bar{ν_μ}$, $W^+W^-$ and $γγ$ in the above scenario by comparison of the seconda…
Dark matter (DM) annihilations have been widely studied as a possible explanation of excess gamma rays from the galactic center seen by Fermi/LAT. However most such models are in conflict with constraints from dwarf spheroidals. Motivated by this tension, we show that p-wave annihilating dark matter can easily accommodate both sets of observations due to the lower DM velocity dispersion in dwarf galaxies. Explaining the DM relic abundance is then challenging. We outline a scenario in which the usual thermal abundance is obtained through s-wave annihilations of a metastable particle, that event…
We consider a quintessence field which transitions from a matter-like to a cosmological constant behavior between recombination and the present time. We aim at easing the tension in the measurement of the present Hubble rate, and we assess the $Λ$CDM model properly enlarged to include our quintessence field against cosmological observations. The model does not address the scope we proposed. This result allows us to exclude a class of quintessential models as a solution to the tension in the Hubble constant measurements.

The local measurement of $H_0$ is in tension with the prediction of $Λ$CDM model based on the Planck data. This tension may imply that dark energy is strengthened in the late-time Universe. We employ the latest cosmological observations on CMB, BAO, LSS, SNe, $H(z)$ and $H_0$ to constrain several interacting dark energy models. Our results show no significant indications for the interaction between dark energy and dark matter. The $H_0$ tension can be moderately alleviated, but not totally released.
Many late time approaches for the solution of the Hubble tension use late time smooth deformations of the Hubble expansion rate $H(z)$ of the Planck18/$Λ$CDM best fit to match the locally measured value of $H_0$ while effectively keeping the comoving distance to the last scattering surface and $Ω_{0m} h^2$ fixed to maintain consistency with Planck CMB measurements. A well known problem of these approaches is that they worsen the fit to low $z$ distance probes. Here we show that another problem of these approaches is that they worsen the level of the $Ω_{0m}-σ_8$ growth tension. We use the gene…
