This review illustrates how Local Fermi Liquid (LFL) theories describe the strongly correlated and coherent low-energy dynamics of quantum dot devices. This approach consists in an effective elastic scattering theory, accounting exactly for strong correlations. Here, we focus on the mesoscopic capacitor and recent experiments achieving Coulomb-induced quantum state transfer. Extending to out-of-equilibrium regimes, aiming at triggered single electron emission, we illustrate how inelastic effects become crucial, requiring approaches beyond LFLs, shedding new light on past experimental data, by showing clear interaction effects in the dynamics of mesoscopic capacitors.
We present experimental results and macrospin simulations of the switching characteristics of orthogonal spin-transfer devices incorporating an out-of-plane magnetized polarizing layer and an in-plane magnetized spin valve device at cryogenic temperatures. At $T=4$ K we demonstrate: high speed deterministic switching at short pulse lengths - down to 100 ps - with sufficient measurement statistics to establish a switching error rate of $10^{-5}$; coherent precessional switching at longer times; and ensemble decoherence effects at even longer times. Finite temperature macrospin models capture th…
Carbon nanotubes bridge the molecular and crystalline quantum worlds, and their extraordinary electronic, mechanical and optical properties have attracted enormous attention from a broad scientific community. We review the basic principles of fabricating spin-electronic devices based on individual, electrically-gated carbon nanotubes, and present experimental efforts to understand their electronic and nuclear spin degrees of freedom, which in the future may enable quantum applications.
We investigate the coherent energy transfer between two quantum systems mediated by a quantum bus. In particular, we consider the energy transfer process between two qubits, and how it can be influenced by using a third qubit or photons in a resonant cavity as mediators. Inspecting different figures of merit and considering both on and off-resonance configurations, we characterize the energy transfer performances. We show that, while the qubit-mediated transfer shows no advantages with respect to a direct coupling case, the cavity-mediated one is progressively more and more efficient as functi…
We study cotunneling in a double junction Coulomb blockade device under the influence of time dependent potentials. It is shown that the ac-bias leads to photon assisted cotunneling which in some cases may dominate the transport. We derive a general non-perturbative expression for the tunneling current in the presence of oscillating potentials and give a perturbative expression for the photon assisted cotunneling current.
We propose computing bus devices that enable quantum information to be coherently transferred between topological and conventional qubits. We describe a concrete realization of such a topological quantum bus acting between a topological qubit in a Majorana wire network and a conventional semiconductor double quantum dot qubit. Specifically, this device measures the joint (fermion) parity of these two different qubits by using the Aharonov-Casher effect in conjunction with an ancilliary superconducting flux qubit that facilitates the measurement. Such a parity measurement, together with the abi…
We demonstrate the electrical detection of magnon-magnon hybrid dynamics in yttrium iron garnet/permalloy (YIG/Py) thin film bilayer devices. Direct microwave current injection through the conductive Py layer excites the hybrid dynamics consisting of the uniform mode of Py and the first standing spin wave ($n=1$) mode of YIG, which are coupled via interfacial exchange. Both the two hybrid modes, with Py or YIG dominated excitations, can be detected via the spin rectification signals from the conductive Py layer, providing phase resolution of the coupled dynamics. The phase characterization is …
Hybrid InSb nanowire-superconductor devices are promising for investigating Majorana modes and topological quantum computation in solid-state devices. An experimental realisation of ballistic, phase-coherent superconductor-nanowire hybrid devices is a necessary step towards engineering topological superconducting electronics. Here, we report on a low-temperature transport study of Josephson junction devices fabricated from InSb nanowires grown by molecular-beam epitaxy and provide a clear evidence for phase-coherent, ballistic charge transport through the nanowires in the junctions. We demonst…
Quantum systems are inherently dissipation-less, making them excellent candidates even for classical information processing. We propose to use an array of large-spin quantum magnets for realizing a device which has two modes of operation: memory and data-bus. While the weakly interacting low-energy levels are used as memory to store classical information (bits), the high-energy levels strongly interact with neighboring magnets and mediate the spatial movement of information through quantum dynamics. Despite the fact that memory and data-bus require different features, which are usually preroga…
We discuss the steady-state electronic transport in solid-state and molecular devices in the quantum regime. The decimation technique allows a comprehensive description of the electronic structure. Such a method is used, in conjunction with the generalizations of Landauer's tunneling formalism, to describe a wide range of transport regimes. We analize mesoscopic and semiclassical metallic transport, the metal-insulator transition, and the resonant tunneling regime. The effects of decoherence on transport is discussed in terms of the D'Amato-Pastawski model. A brief presentation of the time dep…
Transport measurements were made on four-terminal devices fabricated from InSb/Al_xIn_(1-x)Sb quantum well structures at temperatures from 1.5 to 300K. Negative bend resistance, which is characteristic of ballistic transport, was observed in devices of channel widths 0.2 or 0.5 μm. We have improved upon the existing implementations of R-matrix theory in device physics by introducing boundary conditions that dramatically speed convergence. By comparison with R-matrix calculations, we show that the experimental observations are consistent with quantum coherent transport.
We present an inverted GaAs 2D electron gas with self-assembled InAs quantum dots in close proximity, with the goal of combining quantum transport with quantum optics experiments. We have grown and characterized several wafers -- using transport, AFM and optics -- finding narrow-linewidth optical dots and high-mobility, single subband 2D gases. Despite being buried 500 nm below the surface, the dots are clearly visible on AFM scans, allowing precise localization and paving the way towards a hybrid quantum system integrating optical dots with surface gate-defined nanostructures in the 2D gas.
Single-crystal inorganic halide perovskites are attracting interest for quantum device applications. Here we present low-temperature quantum magnetotransport measurements on thin film devices of epitaxial single-crystal CsSnBr$_{3}$, which exhibit two-dimensional Mott variable range hopping (VRH) and giant negative magnetoresistance. These findings are described by a model for quantum interference between different directed hopping paths and we extract the temperature-dependent hopping length of charge carriers, their localization length, and a lower bound for their phase coherence length of ~…
We discuss control of the quantum-transport properties of a mesoscopic device by connecting it in a coherent feedback loop with a quantum-mechanical controller. We work in a scattering approach and derive results for the combined scattering matrix of the device-controller system and determine the conditions under which the controller can exert ideal control on the output characteristics. As concrete example we consider the use of feedback to optimise the conductance of a chaotic quantum dot and investigate effects of controller dimension and decoherence. In both respects we find that the perfo…
Electron-phase modulation in magnetic and electric fields will be presented in In_(0.75)Ga_(0.25)As Aharonov-Bohm (AB) rings. The zero Schottky barrier of this material made it possible to nanofabricate devices with radii down to below 200 nm without carrier depletion. We shall present a fabrication scheme based on wet and dry etching that yielded excellent reproducibility, very high contrast of the oscillations and good electrical gating. The operation of these structures is compatible with closed-cycle refrigeration and suggests that this process can yield coherent electronic circuits that d…
Diamond cavity optomechanical devices hold great promise for quantum technology based on coherent coupling between photons, phonons and spins. These devices benefit from the exceptional physical properties of diamond, including its low mechanical dissipation and optical absorption. However the nanoscale dimensions and mechanical isolation of these devices can make them susceptible to thermo-optic instability when operating at the high intracavity field strengths needed to realize coherent photon--phonon coupling. In this work, we overcome these effects through engineering of the device geometr…
The non-local coherent nature of the Majorana devices is one of the key factors for realizing decoherence-free topological qubits. Direct observation of this coherent nature could provide a first-step benchmarking scheme to validate Majorana qubit quality. We propose a simple transport scheme with a Majorana island device along with a dissipative environment in the electrodes. We found that the dissipative environment renormalizes the quantum transport in significant different ways: As reducing temperature, while the conductance for Majorana coherent teleportation increases, all other incohere…
With recent developments in spintronics, it is now possible to envision spin-driven devices with magnets and interconnects that require a new class of transport models using generalized Fermi functions and currents, each with four components: one for charge and three for spin. The corresponding impedance elements are not pure numbers but $4\times4$ matrices. Starting from the Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (NEGF) formalism in the elastic, phase-coherent transport regime, we develop spin generalized Landauer-Büttiker formulas involving such $4\times 4$ conductances, for multi-terminal devices…
Hybrid dynamic systems have recently gained interests with respect to both fundamental physics and device applications, particularly with their potential for coherent information processing. In this perspective, we will focus on the recent rapid developments of magnon-based hybrid systems, which seek to combine magnonic excitations with diverse excitations for transformative applications in devices, circuits and information processing. Key to their promising potentials is that magnons are highly tunable excitations and can be easily engineered to couple with various dynamic media and platforms…
We investigate coherent electron transport through a parallel circuit of two quantum dots, each of which has a single tunable energy level. Electrons tunneling via each dot from the left lead interfere with each other at the right lead. It is shown that due to the quantum interference of tunneling electrons the double quantum dot device is magnetically polarized by coherent circulation of electrons on the closed path through the dots and the leads. Varying the energy level of each dot one can make the magnetic states of the device to be either {\em up-}, {\em non-}, or {\em down-} polarization…
We consider the nonlinear scattering theory for three-terminal thermoelectric devices, used for power generation or refrigeration. Such systems are quantum phase-coherent versions of a thermocouple, and the theory applies to systems in which interactions can be treated at a mean-field level. We consider an arbitrary three-terminal system in any external magnetic field, including systems with broken time-reversal symmetry, such as chiral thermoelectrics, as well as systems in which the magnetic field plays no role. We show that the upper bound on efficiency at given power output is of quantum o…
Diamond membrane devices containing optically coherent nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers are key to enable novel cryogenic experiments such as optical ground-state cooling of hybrid spin-mechanical systems and efficient entanglement distribution in quantum networks. Here, we report on the fabrication of a (3.4 $\pm$ 0.2) μm thin, smooth (surface roughness r$_q$ < 0.4 nm over an area of 20 μm by 30 μm diamond membrane containing individually resolvable, narrow linewidth (< 100 MHz) NV centers. We fabricate this sample via a combination of high energy electron irradiation, high temperature annealing…
Solid state quantum processors based on spins in silicon quantum dots are emerging as a powerful platform for quantum information processing. High fidelity single- and two-qubit gates have recently been demonstrated and large extendable qubit arrays are now routinely fabricated. However, two-qubit gates are mediated through nearest-neighbor exchange interactions, which require direct wavefunction overlap. This limits the overall connectivity of these devices and is a major hurdle to realizing error correction, quantum random access memory, and multi-qubit quantum algorithms. To extend the conn…
While the size of functional elements in memristors becomes of the orders of nano-meters or even smaller, the quantum effects in their dynamics can significantly influence their transport properties, consistent with recent experimental observations of conductance quantisation in memristors. This requires the development of experimentally realizable procedures to detect quantumness of memristors. Here we developed an experimental protocol allowing us to find evidence that the memristor can be in a superposition of states with different memristivities. We simulate the nonlinearity induced in the…
The two dimensional electron gas formed between the two band insulators SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 exhibits a variety of interesting physical properties which make it an appealing material for use in future spintronics and/or quantum computing devices. For this kind of applications electrons have to retain their phase memory for sufficiently long times or length. Using a mesoscopic size device we were able to extract the phase coherence length, and its temperature variation. We find the dephasing rate to have a power law dependence on temperature. The power depends on the temperature range studied and …
We study coherent transport in density tunable micro-devices patterned from thin films of the topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3. The devices exhibit pronounced electric field effect, including ambipolar modulation of the resistance with an on/off ratio of 500%. We show that the weak antilocalization (WAL) correction to conductance is sensitive to the number of coherently coupled channels, which in a TI includes the top and bottom surface and the bulk carriers. These are separated into coherently independent channels by the application of gate voltage and at elevated temperatures. Our results a…
The implementation and engineering of bright and coherent solid state quantum light sources is key for the realization of both on chip and remote quantum networks. Despite tremendous efforts for more than 15 years, the combination of these two key prerequisites in a single, potentially scalable device is a major challenge. Here, we report on the observation of bright and coherent single photon emission generated via pulsed, resonance fluorescence conditions from a single quantum dot (QD) deterministically centered in a micropillar cavity device via cryogenic optical lithography. The brightness…
Periodically driven coherent conductors provide a universal platform for the development of quantum transport devices. Here, we lay down a comprehensive theory to describe the thermodynamics of these systems. We first focus on moderate thermo-electrical biases and low driving frequencies. For this linear response regime, we establish generalized Onsager-Casimir relations and an extended fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Furthermore, we derive a family of thermodynamic bounds proving that any local matter or heat current puts a non-trivial lower limit on the overall dissipation rate of a coheren…
The Single Cooper Pair Josephson Transistor is a device that exhibits at the same time charge quantization and phase coherence. Coherent quantum phase slip phenomenon is "dual" the Josephson phase coherence while the charge quantization is dual to the flux quantization. We present the experimental demonstration and the theoretical description of a new superconducting device - Single Flux Transistor, which is dual to the Single Cooper Pair Transistor. Our transport measurements show the periodic modulation of the critical voltage by the external magnetic field. The obtained current-voltage char…

The unique properties of quantum Hall devices arise from the ideal one-dimensional edge states that form in a two-dimensional electron system at high magnetic field. Tunnelling between edge states across a quantum point contact (QPC) has already revealed rich physics, like fractionally charged excitations, or chiral Luttinger liquid. Thanks to scanning gate microscopy, we show that a single QPC can turn into an interferometer for specific potential landscapes. Spectroscopy, magnetic field and temperature dependences of electron transport reveal a quantitatively consistent interferometric behav…
We describe a mechanism by which an electrical bias voltage applied across a unipolar semiconductor quantum well can drive an exciton or polariton supercurrent. The mechanism depends on the properties of electronic quasiparticles in quantum wells or two-dimensional materials that are dressed by interactions with the coherent exciton field of an exciton condensate or the coherent exciton and photon fields of a polariton condensate, and on approximate conservation laws. We propose experiments that can be performed to realize this new light-matter coupling effect, and discuss possible application…
Despite the fact that GeTe is known to be a very interesting material for applications in thermoelectrics and for phase-change memories, the knowledge on its low-temperature transport properties is only limited. Here, we report on phase-coherent phenomena in the magnetotransport of GeTe nanowires. From universal conductance fluctuations, a phase-coherence length of about 200nm at 0.5K is determined for the hole carriers. The distinct phase-coherence is confirmed by the observation of Aharonov--Bohm type oscillations for magnetic fields applied along the nanowire axis. We interpret the occurren…
The coherent time evolution of electrons in double quantum dots induced by fast bias-voltage switches is studied theoretically. As it was shown experimentally, such driven double quantum dots are potential devices for controlled manipulation of charge qubits. By numerically solving a quantum master equation we obtain the energy- and time-resolved electron transfer through the device which resembles the measured data. The observed oscillations are found to depend on the level offset of the two dots during the manipulation and, most surprisingly, also the on initialization stage. By means of an …
We present atomistic calculations of quantum coherent electron transport through fulleropyrrolidine terminated molecules bridging a graphene nanogap. We predict that three difficult problems in molecular electronics with single molecules may be solved by utilizing graphene contacts: (1) a back gate modulating the Fermi level in the graphene leads facilitate control of the device conductance in a transistor effect with high on/off current ratio; (2) the size mismatch between leads and molecule is avoided, in contrast to the traditional metal contacts; (3) as a consequence, distinct features in …
Designing coherent processes is essential for developing quantum information technologies. We study coherent dynamics of two spatially separated electrons in a coupled semiconductor double quantum dot (DQD), in which various two-qubit operations are demonstrated just by adjusting the gate voltages. Especially, second-order correlated coherent oscillations provide functional quantum processes for making quantum correlation of separated particles. The results encourage searching quantum entanglement in electronic devices.
Since any realistic electronic device has some degree of disorder, predicting disorder effects in quantum transport is a critical problem. Here we report the theory of nonequilibrium coherent potential approximation (NECPA) for analyzing disorder effects in nonequilibrium quantum transport of nanoelectronic devices. The NECPA is formulated by contour ordered nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) where the disorder average is carried out within the coherent potential approximation on the complex-time contour. We have derived a set of new rules that supplement the celebrated Langreth theorem an…
We review some experimental and theoretical aspects of coherent acoustic phonon generation in piezoelectric semiconductor multiple quantum wells. In order to model more advanced and complicated nano-acoustic devices, a macroscopic continuum theory for the generation and propagation of coherent acoustic phonons in piezoelectric semiconductor heterostructures is presented. The macroscopic approach is applicable in the coherent regime, and can be easily utilized to study coherent acoustic devices based on piezoelectric semiconductor heterosutructures. For each phonon mode, the corresponding coher…
Perfect absorption of radiation in a graphene sheet may play a pivotal role in the realization of technologically relevant optoelectronic devices. In particular, perfect absorption of radiation in the terahertz (THz) spectral range would tremendously boost the utility of graphene in this difficult range of photon energies, which still lacks cheap and robust devices operating at room temperature. In this work we show that unpatterned graphene flakes deposited on appropriate substrates can display gate-tunable coherent perfect absorption (CPA) in the THz spectral range. We present theoretical es…
We investigate heat circulators where a phase coherent region is contacted by three leads that are either normal- or superconducting. A magnetic field, and potentially the superconducting phases, allow to control the preferential direction of the heat flow between the three-different temperature-biased contacts. The main goal of this study is to analyze the requirements for heat circulation in non-ideal devices, in particular focusing on sample-to-sample variations. Quite generally, we find that the circulation performance of the devices is good as long as only a few transport channels are inv…
Since its recent foundation, phase-coherent caloritronics has sparkled continuous interest giving rise to numerous concrete applications. This research field deals with the coherent manipulation of heat currents in mesoscopic superconducting devices by mastering the Josephson phase difference. Here, we introduce a new generation of devices for fast caloritronics able to control local heat power and temperature through manipulation of Josephson vortices, i.e., solitons. Although most salient features concerning Josephson vortices in long Josephson junctions were comprehensively hitherto explore…
We present a novel type of single photon source in solid state, based on the coherent laser light scattering by a single InAs quantum dot. We demonstrate that the coherence of the emitted single photons is tailored by the resonant excitation with a spectral linewidth below the radiative limit. Our ultra-coherent source opens the way for integrated quantum devices dedicated to the generation of single photons with high degrees of indistinguishability.
Nonlinear interactions in coherent gases are not only at the origin of of bright and dark solitons and superfluids. At the same time, they give rise to phenomena such as multistability, which hold great promise for the development of advanced photonic and spintronic devices. In particular, spinor multistability in strongly-coupled semiconductor microcavities shows that the spin of hundreds of exciton-polaritons can be coherently controlled, opening the route to spin-optronic devices such as ultrafast spin memories, gates or even neuronal communication schemes. Here, we demonstrate that switchi…
A quantum internet, where widely separated quantum devices are coherently connected, is a fundamental vision for local and global quantum information networks and processing. Superconducting quantum devices can now perform sophisticated quantum engineering locally on chip and a detailed method to achieve coherent optical quantum interconnection between distant superconducting devices is a vital, but highly challenging, goal. We describe a concrete opto-magneto-mechanical system that can interconvert microwave-to-optical quantum information with high fidelity. In one such node we utilise the ma…
Advancing the development of spin-wave devices requires high-quality low-damping magnetic materials where magnon spin currents can propagate efficiently and interact effectively with local magnetic textures. We show that magnetic domain walls (DW) can modulate spin-wave transport in perpendicularly magnetized channels of Bi-doped yttrium-iron-garnet (BiYIG). Conversely, we demonstrate that the magnon spin current can drive DW motion in the BiYIG channel device by means of magnon spin-transfer torque. The DW can be reliably moved over 15 um distances at zero applied magnetic field by a magnon s…
We investigate coherent time-evolution of charge states (pseudo-spin qubit) in a semiconductor double quantum dot. This fully-tunable qubit is manipulated with a high-speed voltage pulse that controls the energy and decoherence of the system. Coherent oscillations of the qubit are observed for several combinations of many-body ground and excited states of the quantum dots. Possible decoherence mechanisms in the present device are also discussed.
Quantum mechanics can strongly influence the noise properties of mesoscopic devices. To probe this effect we have measured the current fluctuations at high-frequency (5-90G Hz) using a superconductor-insulator-superconductor tunnel junction as an on-chip spectrum analyzer. By coupling this frequency-resolved noise detector to a quantum device we can measure the high-frequency, non-symmetrized noise as demonstrated for a Josephson junction. The same scheme has been used to detect the current fluctuations arising from coherent charge oscillations in a two-level system, a superconducting charge q…
Currently, thermally excited magnons are being intensively investigated owing to their potential in computing devices and thermoelectric conversion technologies. We report the detection of thermal magnon current propagating in a magnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet under a temperature gradient using a quantum sensor: electron spins associated with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. Thermal magnon current was observed as modified Rabi oscillation frequencies of NV spins hosted in a beam-shaped bulk diamond that resonantly coupled with coherent magnon propagating over a long distance. A…
Coherent control of quantum states has been demonstrated in a variety of superconducting devices. In all these devices, the variables that are manipulated are collective electromagnetic degrees of freedom: charge, superconducting phase, or flux. Here, we demonstrate the coherent manipulation of a quantum system based on Andreev bound states, which are microscopic quasiparticle states inherent to superconducting weak links. Using a circuit quantum electrodynamics setup we perform single-shot readout of this "Andreev qubit". We determine its excited state lifetime and coherence time to be in the…
