We discuss recent progress in studying Quantum Chromodynamics at finite temperature using $N_f=2+1+1$ Wilson twisted mass fermions. Particular interest is in QCD symmetries and their breaking and restoration. First, we discuss the behaviour of the $η'$ meson at finite temperature, which is tightly connected to the axial and chiral symmetries. The results suggest a small decrease of the $η'$ mass in the pseudo-critical region coming close to the non-anomalous contribution and subsequent growth at large temperatures. Second, we present the first results of lattice simulations of Quantum Chromodynamics with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass Wilson fermions at physical pion, strange and charm masses. We estimate the chiral pseudo-critical temperatures for different observables. Our preliminary results are consistent with a second order transition in the chiral limit, however other scenarios are not excluded.
Inspired by the present experimental status of charmed-strange mesons, we perform a systematic study of the charmed-strange meson family, in which we calculate the mass spectra of the charmed-strange meson family by taking a screening effect into account in the Godfrey-Isgur model and investigate the corresponding strong decays via the quark pair creation model. These phenomenological analyses of charmed-strange mesons not only shed light on the features of the observed charmed-strange states, but also provide important information on future experimental search for the missing higher radial an…
We present the energy spectra of the low lying doubly-charmed baryons using lattice quantum chromodynamics. We precisely predict the ground state mass of the charmed-strange Omega(cc) (1/2+) baryon to be 3712(11)(12) MeV which could well be the next doubly-charmed baryon to be discovered at the LHCb experiment at CERN. We also predict masses of other doubly-charmed strange baryons with quantum numbers 3/2+, 1/2-, and 3/2-.
The charmed-strange meson spectrum is calculated with the overlap valence fermions on 2+1 flavor domain wall dynamical configurations for $32^3\times 64$ lattices with a spatial size of 2.7 fm. Both charm and strange quark propagators are calculated with the overlap fermion action. The calculated scalar meson at 2304(22) MeV and axial-vector meson at 2546(27) MeV are in good agreement with the experimental masses of $D{s0}^*$(2317) and $D_{s1}$(2536).
We present results on the scalar strangeness and charm contents of the nucleon and of the disconnected contributions to the nucleon spin. These are obtained on two flavour non-perturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wilson configurations at a pseudoscalar mass of 290 MeV. We quote f_{T_s} = m_s<N|ss|N>/m_N< = 0.070(22) as our preliminary value for the strange quark fraction of the nucleon mass and a modified minimal subtraction scheme value Delta s = -0.015(10), with as yet unknown systematics, for the strangeness contribution to the spin.
The charmed-strange meson masses are calculated on a quenched lattice QCD. The charm and strange quark propagators are calculated on the same lattice with the overlap fermion. $16^3\times 72$ lattice with Wilson gauge action at $β=0.6345$ are used. The charm and strange quark masses are determined by fitting the $J/ψ$ and $ϕ$ masses respectively. The charmed strange meson spectrum for the scalar, axial, pseudoscalar and vector channels are calculated. They agree with experiments. In particular, we find the scalar meson mass to be 2248(78)MeV which is in agreement with that of D_{s0}^*(2317).
We present a lattice QCD computation and preliminary results for the leptonic decay constants of the pseudoscalar mesons $K$, $D$ and $D_{s}$ in the isosymmetric QCD limit. The computation is based on simulations of $N_f = 2+1+1$ dynamical quarks performed by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC), where the light, strange and charm quark masses are all tuned at their physical values. We also present preliminary unitarity checks for the first and second rows of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix.
We present a lattice calculation of the Hadronic Vacuum Polarization (HVP) contribution of the strange and charm quarks to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon including leading-order electromagnetic corrections. We employ the gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f = 2+1+1$ dynamical quarks at three values of the lattice spacing ($a \simeq 0.062, 0.082, 0.089$ fm) with pion masses in the range $M_π\simeq 210 - 450$ MeV. The strange and charm quark masses are tuned at their physical values. Neglecting disconnected diagrams and after the e…
We present a high precision lattice calculation of the average up/down, strange and charm quark masses performed with Nf=2 twisted mass Wilson fermions. The analysis includes data at four values of the lattice spacing and pion masses as low as ~270 MeV, allowing for accurate continuum limit and chiral extrapolation. The strange and charm masses are extracted by using several methods, based on different observables: the kaon and the eta_s meson for the strange quark and the D, D_s and eta_c mesons for the charm. The quark mass renormalization is carried out non-perturbatively using the RI-MOM m…
We present first results of a 2+1+1 flavor twisted mass lattice QCD computation of strange and charm meson masses. We focus on D and D_s mesons with spin J = 0,1 and parity P = -,+.
The masses of the low-lying strange and charm baryons are evaluated using two degenerate flavors of twisted mass sea quarks for pion masses in the range of about 260 MeV to 450 MeV. The strange and charm valence quark masses are tuned to reproduce the mass of the kaon and D-meson at the physical point. The tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action is employed. We use three values of the lattice spacing, corresponding to $β=3.9$, $β=4.05$ and $β=4.2$ with $r_0/a=5.22(2)$, $r_0/a=6.61(3)$ and $r_0/a=8.31(5)$ respectively. %spacings $a=0.0855(5)$ and $a=0.0667(3)$ determined from the pion decay c…
We present results of lattice QCD simulations with mass-degenerate up and down and mass-split strange and charm (N_f = 2+1+1) dynamical quarks using Wilson twisted mass fermions at maximal twist. The tuning of the strange and charm quark masses is performed at two values of the lattice spacing a~0.078 fm and a~0.086 fm with lattice sizes ranging from L~1.9 fm to L~2.8 fm. We measure with high statistical precision the light pseudoscalar mass m_PS and decay constant f_PS in a range 270 < m_PS < 510 MeV and determine the low energy parameters f_0, l_3 and l_4 of SU(2) chiral perturbation theory.…
We calculate spatial correlation functions of in-medium mesons consisting of strange--anti-strange, strange--anti-charm and charm--anti-charm quarks in (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD using the highly improved staggered quark action. A comparative study of the in-medium modifications of mesons with different flavor contents is performed. We observe significant in-medium modifications for the $ϕ$ and $D_s$ meson channels already at temperatures around the chiral crossover region. On the other hand, for the $J/ψ$ and $η_c$ meson channels in-medium modifications remain relatively small around the chiral…
We report here results on charm and strange hadron spectra. Adopting a mixed action approach, we use overlap fermions for valence quarks, on a background of 2+1+1 flavours HISQ gauge configurations of MILC collaboration. Two lattice spacings (0.09 fm and 0.06 fm) are used. We find the hyperfine splitting of 1S charmonia to be 114(3)(-2) MeV and 109(4)(-3) MeV, and the splitting (m(Omega_ccc)-3/2 m(JΨ)) is found to be 110(20)(-10) MeV and 120(10) MeV, corresponding to lattices with spacings a = 0.09 and 0.06 fm respectively. We also look at the ratio of the leptonic decay constant f_Ds*/f_Ds.
In the simulation of QCD with 2+1 flavors of Wilson fermions, the positivity of the fermion determinant is generally assumed. We present evidence that this assumption is in general not justified and discuss the consequences of this finding.
We present a calculation of the strange and charm quark contributions to the nucleon spin from the anomalous Ward identity (AWI). It is performed with overlap valence quarks on 2+1-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations on a $24^3 \times 64$ lattice with the light sea mass at $m_π = 330$ MeV. To satisfy the AWI, the overlap fermion for the pseudoscalar density and the overlap Dirac operator for the topological density, which do not have multiplicative renormalization, are used to normalize the form factor of the local axial-vector current at finite $q^2$. For the charm quark, we find …
We describe a new technique to determine the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon coming from the hadronic vacuum polarization using lattice QCD. Our method reconstructs the Adler function, using Padé approximants, from its derivatives at $q^2=0$ obtained simply and accurately from time-moments of the vector current-current correlator at zero spatial momentum. We test the method using strange quark correlators on large-volume gluon field configurations that include the effect of up and down (at physical masses), strange and charm quarks in the sea at multiple values of the…
We investigate the electromagnetic properties of possible charm-strange pentaquarks in the framework of the light-cone QCD sum rule using the photon distribution amplitudes. In particular, by calculating the corresponding electromagnetic form factors defining the radiative transitions under consideration we estimate the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the pentaquark systems of a charm, an anti-strange and three light quarks. We observe that the values of magnetic dipole moments are considerably large, however, the quadrupole moments are very small. Any future measurements of…
We present spin-independent and spin-spin interquark potentials for the charmonium and charmed-strange mesons, which are calculated in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD simulations using the PACS-CS gauge configurations generated at the lightest pion mass ($M_π\approx 156(7)$~MeV) with a lattice cutoff of $a^{-1}\approx 2.2$ GeV and a spatial volume of $(3~{\rm fm})^3$. For the charm quark, we use a relativistic heavy quark (RHQ) action with fine tuned RHQ parameters, which closely reproduce both the experimental spin-averaged mass and hyper-fine splitting of the $1S$ charmonium. The interquark potential…
We present the first lattice-QCD calculation of the unpolarized strange and charm parton distribution functions using large-momentum effective theory (LaMET). We use a lattice ensemble with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) generated by MILC collaboration, with lattice spacing $a\approx 0.12$ fm and $M_π\approx 310$ MeV, and clover valence fermions with two valence pion masses: 310 and 690 MeV. We use momentum-smeared sources to improve the signal up to nucleon boost momentum $P_z=2.18$ GeV, and determine nonperturbative renormalization factors in RI/MOM scheme. We compa…
The explicit breaking of chiral symmetry of the Wilson fermion action results in additive quark mass renormalization. Moreover, flavour singlet and non-singlet scalar currents acquire different renormalization constants with respect to continuum regularization schemes. This complicates keeping the renormalized strange quark mass fixed when varying the light quark mass in simulations with $N_f=2+1$ sea quark flavours. Here we present and validate our strategy within the CLS (Coordinated Lattice Simulations) effort to achieve this in simulations with non-perturbatively order-$a$ improved Wilson …
We present preliminary results for strange and charm contributions to nucleon charges and moments. The scalar, axial and tensor charges, and unpolarized first moments are calculated using clover-on-HISQ formulation and cover four lattice spacings, $a=\{0.06,0.09,0.12, 0.15\}$~fm, and three pion masses, $M_π=\{310,220,130\}$~MeV. The renormalization factors are calculated nonperturbatively using the RI-sMOM scheme. We carry out a chiral and continuum extrapolation to obtain physical results.
By using a single formalism to handle charm, strange and light valence quarks in full lattice QCD for the first time, we are able to determine ratios of quark masses to 1%. For $m_c/m_s$ we obtain 11.85(16), an order of magnitude more precise than the current PDG average. Combined with 1% determinations of the charm quark mass now possible this gives $\bar{m}_s(2{\rm GeV}) =$ 92.4(1.5) MeV. The MILC result for $m_s/m_l = 27.2(3) $ yields $\bar{m}_l(2{\rm GeV})$ = 3.40(7) MeV for the average of $u$ and $d$ quark masses.
We present results for the light, strange and charm quark masses using $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermion ensembles at three values of the lattice spacing, including two ensembles simulated with the physical value of the pion mass. The analysis is done both in the meson and baryon sectors. The difference in the mean values found in the two sectors is included as part of the systematic error. The presentation is based on the work of Ref. [1], where more details can be found.
We determine the masses of the light and the strange quarks in the $\bar{MS}$-scheme using our high-statistics lattice simulation of QCD with dynamical Wilson fermions. For the light quark mass we find $m^{light}_{\bar{MS}}(2 GeV) = 2.7(2) MeV$, which is lower than in quenched simulations. For the strange quark, in a sea of two dynamical light quarks, we obtain $m^{strange}_{\bar{MS}}(2 GeV) = 140(20) MeV$.
We investigate the mass spectrum of 1^{+} exotic mesons with quark content (\c\s\cbar\qbar) or (\c\q\cbar\sbar), using molecular and diquark-antidiquark operators, in quenched lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry. For the molecular operator {(\qbarγ_i\c)(\cbarγ_5\s)-(\cbarγ_i\s)(\qbarγ_5\c)} and the diquark-antidiquark operator {(\q^T C γ_i \c)(\sbar C γ_5 \cbar^T)- (\q^T C γ_5 \c)(\sbar C γ_i^T \cbar^T)}, both detect a 1^{+} resonance with mass around 4010 +- 50 MeV in the limit m_q -> m_{u,d}.
The electromagnetic form factors of the spin-3/2 $Ω$ baryons, namely $Ω$, $Ω_c^\ast$, $Ω_{cc}^\ast$ and $Ω_{ccc}$, are calculated in full QCD on $32^3\times 64$ PACS-CS lattices with a pion mass of 156(9) MeV. The electric charge radii and magnetic moments from the $E0$ and $M1$ multipole form factors are extracted. Results for the electric quadrupole form factors, $E2$, are also given. Quark sector contributions are computed individually for each observable and then combined to obtain the baryon properties. We find that the charm quark contributions are systematically smaller than the strange…
We present a study of charm physics using RBC/UKQCD 2+1 flavour physical point domain wall fermion ensembles for the light quarks as well as for the valence charm quark. After a brief motivation of domain wall fermions as a suitable heavy quark discretisation we will show first results for masses and matrix elements.
We discuss the problem of lattice artefacts in QCD simulations enhanced by the introduction of dynamical charmed quarks. In particular, we advocate the use of a massive renormalization scheme with a close to realistic charm mass. To maintain O(a) improvement for Wilson type fermions in this case we define a finite size scheme and carry out a nonperturbative estimation of the clover coefficient $c_\mathrm{sw}$. It is summarized in a fit formula $c_\mathrm{sw}(g_0^2)$ that defines an improved action suitable for future dynamical charm simulations.
We present results for the strange contribution to the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon computed on the CLS ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ flavors of $\mathcal{O}(a)$-improved Wilson fermions and an $\mathcal{O}(a)$-improved vector current. Several source-sink separations are investigated in order to estimate the excited-state contamination. We calculate the form factors on six ensembles with lattice spacings in the range of $a=0.049-0.086\,\text{fm}$ and pion masses in the range of $m_π=200-360\,\text{MeV}$, which allows for a controlled chiral and continuum extrapolation. In the computa…
We compute the mass spectrum for strange/charmed baryons in the partially quenched approach using N_f=2 twisted mass QCD configurations. We investigate two main issues: the size of lattice artefacts using three values of the lattice spacing (the smallest of which is approximately 0.05 fm) and the dependence of baryon masses on meson (or quark) masses. We thus perform a global fit in order to extrapolate simultaneously to the continuum limit and to the physical point. We estimate the masses of Omega_{sss}, Xi_{dss}, Lambda_{uds}, Omega_{ccc}, Xi_{dcc}, Lambda_{udc}.
The nature of QCD phase transition is studied with massless up and down quarks and a light strange quark, using the Wilson formalism for quarks on a lattice with the temporal direction extension $N_t=4$. We find that the phase transition is first order in the cases of both about 150 MeV and 400 MeV for the strange quark mass. These results together with those for three degenerate quarks suggest that QCD phase transition in nature is first order.
We present the QCD simulation of the first gauge ensemble of two degenerate light quarks, a strange and a charm quark with all quark masses tuned to their physical values within the twisted mass fermion formulation. Results for the pseudoscalar masses and decay constants confirm that the produced ensemble is indeed at the physical parameters of the theory. This conclusion is corroborated by a complementary analysis in the baryon sector. We examine cutoff and isospin breaking effects and demonstrate that they are suppressed through the presence of a clover term in the action.
We present preliminary results for strangeness form factors of the nucleon computed on the CLS ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ flavors of O($a$)-improved Wilson fermions. Our calculations are performed at two values of the lattice spacing ($a \in \{0.064, 0.086\} \,\mathrm{fm}$) and three values of the pion mass ($m_π\in \{ 200, 280, 340\} \,\mathrm{MeV}$). The determination of strangeness form factors proceeds by computing quark-disconnected diagrams, for which we employ hierarchical probing in four dimensions in order to deal with this most challenging part of the calculation. Furthermore, we inves…
Using the one-boson-exchange model, we investigate the $Λ_c\bar{D}_s^*$, $Σ_c\bar{D}_s^*$, $Σ_c^*\bar{D}_s^*$, $Ξ_c\bar{D}^*$, $Ξ_c'\bar{D}^*$, and $Ξ_c^*\bar{D}^*$ interactions by considering the one-eta-exchange and/or one-pion-exchange contributions. We further predict the existence of hidden-charm molecular pentaquarks. Promising candidates for hidden-charm molecular pentaquarks include a $Ξ_c'\bar{D}^*$ state with $0(\frac{1}{2}^-)$ and the $Ξ_c^*\bar{D}^*$ states with $0(\frac{1}{2}^-)$ and $0(\frac{3}{2}^-)$. Experimental searches for these predicted hidden-charm molecular pentaquarks a…
We calculate the intrinsic strangeness of the nucleon, <N|ss|N> - <0|ss|0>, using the MILC library of improved staggered gauge configurations using the Asqtad and HISQ actions. Additionally, we present a preliminary calculation of the intrinsic charm of the nucleon using the HISQ action with dynamical charm. The calculation is done with a method which incorporates features of both commonly-used methods, the direct evaluation of the three-point function and the application of the Feynman- Hellman theorem. We present an improvement on this method that further reduces the statistical error, and c…
We present preliminary results for the determination of the leading strange and charm quark-connected contributions to the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon's g-2. Measurements are performed on the RC* collaboration's QCD ensembles, with 3+1 flavors of O(a) improved Wilson fermions and C* boundary conditions. The HVP is computed on a single value of the lattice spacing and two lattice volumes at unphysical pion mass. In addition, we compare the signal-to-noise ratio for different lattice discretizations of the vector current.
We report on our calculation of the strange contribution to the vector and axial vector form factors. The strange charge radii, magnetic moment, and axial charge are extracted by model independent $z$-expansion fits to the $Q^2$-dependence of the respective form factors. Furthermore, the isoscalar contribution to the axial and tensor charge is investigated by combining the calculation of connected and disconnected diagrams. The required renormalization is performed with the Rome-Southampton method. We make use of the CLS $N_f=2+1$ $\mathcal{O}(a)$-improved Wilson fermion ensembles. Results are…
We present a lattice QCD determination of the average up-down, strange and charm quark masses based on simulations performed by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ dynamical fermions. We simulated at three different values of the lattice spacing, the smallest being approximately $0.06fm$, and with pion masses as small as $210 \text{MeV}$. Our results are: $m_{ud}(2\text{GeV})=3.70(17)\text{MeV}$, $m_s(2\text{GeV})=99.2(3.9)\text{MeV}$, $m_c(m_c)=1.350(49)\text{GeV}$, $m_s/m_{ud}=26.64(30)$ and $m_c/m_s=11.65(12)$.
The nature of finite temperature transitions in lattice QCD with Wilson quarks is studied near the chiral limit for the cases of 2, 3, and 6 flavors of degenerate quarks ($N_F=2$, 3, and 6) and also for the case of massless up and down quarks and a light strange quark ($N_F=2+1$). Our simulations mainly performed on lattices with the temporal direction extension $N_t=4$ indicate that the finite temperature transition in the chiral limit (chiral transition) is continuous for $N_F=2$, while it is of first order for $N_F=3$ and 6. We find that the transition is of first order for the case of mass…
Lattice QCD simulations directly at physical masses of dynamical light, strange and charm quarks are highly desirable especially to remove systematic errors due to chiral extrapolations. However such simulations are still challenging. We discuss the adaption of efficient algorithms, like multi-grid methods or higher order integrators, within the molecular dynamic steps of the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm, that are enabling simulations of a new set of gauge ensembles by the Extended Twisted Mass collaboration (ETMC). We present the status of the on-going ETMC simulation effort that aims to enab…
We present an ongoing project aimed at determining the thermodynamic Equation of State (EoS) of quark--gluon matter from lattice QCD with two generations of dynamical quarks. We employ the Wilson twisted mass implementation for the fermionic fields and the improved Iwasaki gauge action. Relying on $T=0$ data obtained by the ETM Collaboration the strange and charm quark masses are fixed at their physical values, while the pion mass takes four values in the range from 470 MeV down to 210 MeV. The temperature is varied within a fixed--lattice scale approach. The values for the pseudocritical temp…
We present a nearly final analysis of the $u/d$ and $s$ quark masses, extracted using the PCAC quark masses reported in [PRD 95 (2017) 074504]. The data is based on the CLS $N_f = 2 + 1$ simulations with Wilson/Clover quarks and Lüscher-Weisz gauge action, at four $β$ values (i.e. lattice spacings) and a range of quark masses. We use the ALPHA results of [EPJC 78 (2018) 387] for non-perturbative quark mass renormalisation and RG-running from hadronic to electroweak scales in the Schrödinger Functional scheme. Quark masses are quoted both in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme and as RGI quantities.
We describe a new technique (published in Phys. Rev. D89 114501) to determine the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon coming from the hadronic vacuum polarisation using lattice QCD. Our method uses Padé approximants to reconstruct the Adler function from its derivatives at $q^2=0$. These are obtained simply and accurately from time-moments of the vector current-current correlator at zero spatial momentum. We test the method using strange quark correlators calculated on MILC Collaboration's $n_f = 2+1+1$ HISQ ensembles at multiple values of the lattice spacing, multiple vo…
