Galactic outflows play a major role in the evolution of galaxies, but the underlying physical processes are poorly understood. This is mainly because we have little information about the outflow structure, especially on large scales. In this paper, we probe the structure of galactic outflows in low-$z$ starburst by using a combination of ultra-violet spectroscopy and imaging of the fluorescence emission lines (associated with transitions to excited fine-structure levels) and spectroscopy of the corresponding strongly blue-shifted resonance absorption lines. We find that in the majority of cases the observed fluorescence emission lines are much weaker and narrower than the absorption lines, originating in the star-forming interstellar medium and/or the slowest-moving part of the inner outflow. In a minority of cases, the outflowing absorbing material does make a significant contribution to the fluorescence emission. These latter systems are characterized by both strong Ly$α$ emission lines and weak low-ionization absorption lines (both known to be empirical signs of Lyman-continuum leakage). We argue that the observed weakness of emission from the outflow seen in the majority of cases is due to the missing emission arising on scales larger than those encompassed by the aperture of the {\it{Hubble Space Telescope}}. This implies shallow radial density profiles in these outflows, and suggests that most of the observed absorbing material must be created/injected at radii much larger than that of the starburst. This has important implications for our understanding of both the physics of galactic outflows and for our estimation of their principal properties.
Neutral-atomic and molecular outflows are a common occurrence in galaxies, near and far. They operate over the full extent of their galaxy hosts, from the innermost regions of galactic nuclei to the outermost reaches of galaxy halos. They carry a substantial amount of material that would otherwise have been used to form new stars. These cool outflows may have a profound impact on the evolution of their host galaxies and environments. This article provides an overview of the basic physics of cool outflows, a comprehensive assessment of the observational techniques and diagnostic tools used to c…
Interstellar ultraviolet absorption-lines provide crucial information about the properties of galactic outflows. In this paper, we augment our previous analysis of the systematic properties of starburst-driven galactic outflows by expanding our sample to include a rare population of starbursts with exceptionally high outflow velocities. In principle, these could be a qualitatively different phenomenon from more typical outflows. However, we find that instead these starbursts lie on, or along the extrapolation of, the trends defined by the more typical systems studied previously by us. We explo…

We report on the first ALMA observation of the CO(3$-$2) and rest-frame ~340 GHz continuum emission in PDS 456, which is the most luminous, radio-quiet QSO in the local Universe ($z$~0.18), with a bolometric luminosity $L_{\rm Bol}\sim10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$. ALMA angular resolution allowed us to map scales as small as ~700 pc. The molecular gas reservoir, traced by the core of the very bright CO(3$-$2) emission line, is distributed in a compact rotating disk, with size of ~1.3 kpc, seen close to face-on ($i$~25 deg). Fast CO(3$-$2) emission in the velocity range $v\in[-1000,+500]$ km s$^{-1}$ i…
The shape of emission lines in the optical spectra of star-forming galaxies reveals the kinematics of the diffuse gaseous component. We analyse the shape of prominent emission lines in a sample of ~53,000 star-forming galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, focusing on departures from gaussianity. Departures from a single gaussian profile allow us to probe the motion of gas and to assess the role of outflows. The sample is divided into groups according to their stellar velocity dispersion and star formation rate. The spectra within each group are stacked to improve the signal-to-noise rati…

We investigate the interactions of energetic hadronic particles with the media in outflows from star-forming protogalaxies. These particles undergo pion-producing interactions which can drive a heating effect in the outflow, while those advected by the outflow also transport energy beyond the galaxy, heating the circumgalactic medium. We investigate how this process evolves over the length of the outflow and calculate the corresponding heating rates in advection-dominated and diffusion-dominated cosmic ray transport regimes. In a purely diffusive transport scenario, we find the peak heating ra…
Cool clouds are expected to be destroyed and incorporated into hot supernova-driven galactic winds. The mass-loading of a wind by the cool medium modifies the bulk velocity, temperature, density, entropy, and abundance profiles of the hot phase relative to an un-mass-loaded outflow. We provide general equations and limits for this physics that can be used to infer the rate of cool gas entrainment from X-ray observations, accounting for non-spherical expansion. In general, mass-loading flattens the density and temperature profiles, decreases the velocity and increases the entropy if the Mach nu…
We recently used hydro-chemical simulations to demonstrate that molecular outflows observed in luminous quasars can be explained by molecule formation within the AGN wind. However, these simulations cover a limited parameter space, due to their computational cost. We have therefore developed an analytic model to follow cooling in the shocked ISM layer of an AGN wind. We explore different ambient densities ($1-10^{4} \, \rm{cm}^{-3}$), density profile slopes ($0-1.5$), AGN luminosities ($10^{44}-10^{47} \, \rm{erg} \, \rm{s}^{-1}$), and metallicities ($0.1-3 \rm{Z}_{\odot}$). The swept up gas m…
We conduct a systematic search for galaxies at $z=0.1-1.5$ with [OII]$\lambda3727$, [OIII]$\lambda5007$, or H$α\lambda6563$ emission lines extended over at least 30 kpc by using deep narrowband and broadband imaging in Subaru-XMM Deep Survey (SXDS) field. These extended emission-line galaxies are dubbed [OII], [OIII], or H$α$ blobs. Based on a new selection method that securely selects extended emission-line galaxies, we find 77 blobs at $z=0.40-1.46$ with the isophotal area of emission lines down to $1.2\times10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ kpc$^{-2}$. Four of them are spectroscopically conf…
We measure H$_2$ temperatures and column densities across the Orion BN/KL explosive outflow from a set of thirteen near-IR H$_2$ rovibrational emission lines observed with the TripleSpec spectrograph on Apache Point Observatory's 3.5-meter telescope. We find that most of the region is well-characterized by a single temperature (~2000-2500 K), which may be influenced by the limited range of upper energy levels (6000-20,000 K) probed by our data set. The H$_2$ column density maps indicate that warm H$_2$ comprises 10$^{-5}$ - 10$^{-3}$ of the total H$_2$ column density near the center of the out…
We present the results of a narrow-band near-infrared imaging survey for Molecular Hydrogen emission-line Objects (MHOs) toward 26 regions containing high-mass protostellar candidates and massive molecular outflows. We have detected a total of 236 MHOs, 156 of which are new detections, in 22 out of the 26 regions. We use H$_2$ 2.12-$μ$m/H$_2$ 2.25-$μ$m flux ratios, together with morphology, to separate the signatures of fluorescence associated with photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) from shocks associated with outflows in order to identify the MHOs. PDRs have typical low flux ratios of ~ 1.5 - …

We present the results from a detailed analysis of the 2007 Swift monitoring campaign of the quasar PG1211+143. We constructed broad-band, optical/UV/X-ray spectral energy distributions over three X-ray flux intervals. We fitted them with a model which accounts for the disc and the X-ray coronal emission and the warm absorber (well established in this source). The three flux spectra are well fitted by the model we considered. The disc inner temperature remains constant at ~2 eV, while X-rays are variable both in spectral slope and normalization. The absorber covers almost 90% of the central so…
We report on quasar outflow properties revealed by analyzing more than 60 composite outflow spectra built from $\sim 60\,000$ CIV absorption troughs in the SDSS-III/BOSS DR12QBAL catalog. We assess the dependences of the equivalent widths of many outflow metal absorption features on outflow velocity, trough width and position, and quasar magnitude and redshift. The evolution of the equivalent widths of the OVI and NV lines with outflow velocity correlates with that of the mean absorption-line width, the outflow electron density, and the strength of lines arising from collisionally-excited meta…
The most robust way for determining the distance of quasar absorption outflows is the use of troughs from ionic excited states. The column density ratio between the excited and resonance states yields the outflow number density. Combined with a knowledge of the outflow's ionization parameter, a distance from the central source (R) can be determined. Here we report results from two surveys targeting outflows that show troughs from S IV. One survey includes 1091 SDSS and BOSS quasar spectra, and the other includes higher-quality spectra of 13 quasars observed with the Very Large Telescope. Our S…
We investigate the presence of extended ionized outflows in 18 luminous type 2 AGNs (11 quasars and 7 high luminosity Seyfert 2s) at 0.3<z<0.6 based on VLT-FORS2 spectroscopy. We infer typical lower limits on the radial sizes of the outflows R>=severalx100 pc and upper limits R<1-2 kpc. Our results are inconsistent with related studies which suggest that large scale R~several-15 kpc are ubiquitous in QSO2. We study the possible causes of discrepancy and propose that seeing smearing is the cause of the large inferred sizes. The implications in our understanding of the feedback phenomenon are im…
The properties of large-scale galactic outflows, such as their kinetic energy and momentum rates, correlate with the luminosity of the active galactic nucleus (AGN). This is well explained by the wind-driven outflow model, where a fraction of the AGN luminosity drives the outflow. However, significant departures from these correlations have been observed in a number of galaxies. This may happen because AGN luminosity varies on a much shorter timescale ($\sim 10^4-10^5$~yr) than outflow properties do ($\sim 10^6$~yr). We investigate the effect of AGN luminosity variations on outflow properties …
Low-luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei, i.e. L_bol/L_edd ~ 10^-6 - 10^-3, constitute the bulk population of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). Powerful jets, common in these objects, are a crucial source of feedback energy driving mass outflows into the host galaxy and the intergalactic medium. This paper reports the first direct measurement of powerful mass outflows traced by the forbidden high ionization gas in the low luminosity AGN NGC1386 at scales of a few parsecs from the central engine. The high angular resolution of the data allows us to directly measure the location, morphology and kinema…
The global influence of AGN-driven outflows remains uncertain, due to a lack of large samples with accurately-determined outflow properties. In the second paper of this series, we determine the mass and energetics of ionized outflows is 234 type II AGN, the largest such sample to date, by combining the infrared emission of the dust in the wind (paper I) with the emission line properties. We provide new general expressions for the properties of the outflowing gas, which depend on the ionization state of the gas. We also present a novel method to estimate the electron density in the outflow, bas…
We present Adaptive Optics assisted near-IR integral field spectroscopic observations of a luminous quasar at $z = 2.4$, previously observed as the first known example at high redshift of large scale quasar-driven outflow quenching star formation in its host galaxy. The nuclear spectrum shows broad and blueshifted H$β$ in absorption, which is tracing outflowing gas with high densities ($>10^8$ - $10^9$ cm$^{-3}$) and velocities in excess of 10,000 km s$^{-1}$. The properties of the outflowing clouds (covering factor, density, column density and inferred location) indicate that they likely orig…
Many studies have considered the roles of clouds, outflows, and turbulence in producing the broad emission and absorption lines in the spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, these are often treated as separate or even competing models. Here, we consider the possibility that AGN clouds are condensations formed within the thermally unstable zones of outflows and then compare the typical sizes of such condensations with the injection scale $k_0^{-1} \sim L_0$ of turbulence, where $L_0$ is assumed to be the scale height of a representative global outflow model. We find that for broad l…
Galactic outflows are critical to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. However the details of the underlying feedback process remain unclear. We compare Ly$α$ observations of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) with mock observations of their simulated CGM. We use cosmological hydrodynamical `zoom-in' simulations of an LBG which contains strong, momentum-driven galactic outflows. Simulation snapshots at $z=2.2$ and $z=2.65$ are used, corresponding to the available observational data. The simulation is post-processed with the radiative transfer code \t…
We present Bayesian AGN Decomposition Analysis for SDSS Spectra (BADASS), an open source spectral analysis code designed for automatic detailed deconvolution of AGN and host galaxy spectra, implemented in Python, and designed for the next generation of large scale surveys. BADASS simultaneously fits all spectral components, including power-law continuum, stellar line-of-sight velocity distribution, FeII emission, as well as forbidden (narrow), permitted (broad), and outflow emission line features, all performed using Markov Chain Monte Carlo to obtain robust uncertainties and autocorrelation a…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/ sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of V883 Ori, an FU Ori object. We describe the molecular outflow and envelope of the system based on the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO emissions, which together trace a bipolar molecular outflow. The C$^{18}$O emission traces the rotational motion of the circumstellar disk. From the $^{12}$CO blue-shifted emission, we estimate a wide opening angle of $\sim$ 150$^{^{\circ}}$ for the outflow cavities. Also, we find that the outflow is very slow (characteristic velocity of only 0.65 km~s$^{-1}$), which is unique for an FU Ori…
We report on the discovery of extended Ly-alpha nebulae at z~3.3 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF, ~ 40 kpc X 80 kpc) and behind the Hubble Frontier Fields galaxy cluster MACSJ0416 (~ 40kpc), spatially associated with groups of star-forming galaxies. VLT/MUSE integral field spectroscopy reveals a complex structure with a spatially-varying double peaked Ly-alpha emission. Overall, the spectral profiles of the two Ly-alpha nebulae are remarkably similar, both showing a prominent blue emission, more intense and slightly broader than the red peak. From the first nebula, located in the HUDF, no…
We present four radio-loud NLS1 galaxies with extreme emission-line shifts, indicating radial outflow velocities of the ionized gas of up to 2450 km/s, above the escape velocity of the host galaxies. The forbidden lines show strong broadening, up to 2270 km/s. An ionization stratification (higher line shift at higher ionization potential) implies that we see a large-scale outflow rather than single, localized jet-cloud interactions. Similarly, the paucity of zero-velocity [OIII]$λ$5007 emitting gas implies the absence of a second narrow-line region (NLR) component at rest, and therefore a larg…
Cosmic rays (CRs) and magnetic fields may be dynamically important in driving large-scale galactic outflows from rapidly star-forming galaxies. We construct two-dimensional axisymmetric models of the local starburst and super-wind galaxy M82 using the CR propagation code GALPROP. Using prescribed gas density and magnetic field distributions, wind profiles, CR injection rates, and stellar radiation fields, we simultaneously fit both the integrated gamma-ray emission and the spatially-resolved multi-frequency radio emission extended along M82's minor axis. We explore the resulting constraints on…
PS16dtm was classified as a candidate tidal disruption event (TDE) in a dwarf Seyfert 1 galaxy with low-mass black hole ($\sim10^6M\odot$) and has presented various intriguing photometric and spectra characteristics. Using the archival WISE and the newly released NEOWISE data, we found PS16dtm is experiencing a mid-infrared (MIR) flare which started $\sim11$ days before the first optical detection. Interpreting the MIR flare as a dust echo requires close pre-existing dust with a high covering factor, and suggests the optical flare may have brightened slowly for some time before it became brigh…
Radio, X-ray and infrared observations of the inner few hundred pc of the Galactic center have highlighted two characteristics to the ISM. The cosmic ray ionization rate derived from molecular ions such as H$^+_3$, is at least two to three orders of magnitudes higher than in the Galactic disk. The other is bipolar X-ray and radio emission away from the Galactic plane. These features are consistent with a scenario in which high cosmic ray pressure drives large-scale winds away from the Galactic plane. The interaction of such a wind with stellar wind bubbles may explain the energetic nonthermal …
We present a detailed analysis of XMM-Newton X-ray spectra of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 1044. We find robust evidence for a multi-phase, ultra-fast outflow, traced by four separate components in the grating spectrum. One component has high column density and ionization state, and is outflowing at 0.15c. The other three wind components have lower temperature, lower column density, and have outflow velocities 0.08c. This wind structure is strikingly similar to that found in IRAS 17020+4544, suggesting that stratified winds may be a common feature of ultra-fast outflows. Such structure…
Alfvénic component of MHD turbulence damps Alfvénic waves. The consequences of this effect are important for many processes, from cosmic ray (CR) propagation to launching outflows and winds in galaxies and other magnetized systems. We discuss the differences in the damping of the streaming instability by turbulence and the damping of a plane parallel wave. The former takes place in the system of reference aligned with the local direction of magnetic field along which CRs stream. The latter is in the reference frame of the mean magnetic field and traditionally considered in plasma studies. We a…
