Herein,we numerically examine the relative dispersion of Lagrangian particle pairs in two-dimensional inverse energy-cascade turbulence. Behind the Richardson-Obukhov $t^3$ law of relative separation, we discover that the second-order moment of the relative velocity have a temporal scaling exponent different from the prediction based on the Kolmogorov's phenomenology. The results also indicate that time evolution of the probability distribution function of the relative velocity is self-similar. The findings are obtained by enforcing Richardson-Obukhov law either by considering a special initial separation or by conditional sampling. In particular, we demonstrate that the conditional sampling removes the initial-separation dependence of the statistics of the separation and relative velocity. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the conditional statistics are robust with respect to the change in the parameters involved, and that the number of the removed pairs from the sampling decreases when the Reynolds number increases. We also discuss the insights gained as a result of conditional sampling.
Compressible hydrodynamic turbulence is studied under the assumption of a polytropic closure. Following Kolmogorov, we derive an exact relation for some two-point correlation functions in the asymptotic limit of a high Reynolds number.
We use the more intuitive approach due to Kolmogorov (and subsequently, Landau in his text on fluid dynamics) to calculate some third-order structure functions for quasi-geostrophic turbulence for the forward cascade of pseudo-potential enstrophy and the inverse energy cascade in quasi-geostrophic turbulence.
Rotating turbulence is commonly known for being dominated by geostrophic vortices that are invariant along the rotation axis and undergo inverse cascade. Yet, it has recently been shown to sustain fully three-dimensional states with a downscale energy cascade. In this letter, we investigate the statistical properties of three-dimensional rotating turbulence by the means of direct numerical simulations in a triply periodic box where geostrophic vortices are specifically damped. The resulting turbulent flow is an inertial wave turbulence that verifies the Zakharov-Kolmogorov spectrum derived ana…

The last stage of evolution toward the stationary Kolmogorov spectrum of hydrodynamic turbulence is studied using the Leith model. This evolution is shown to manifest itself as a reflection wave in the wavenumber space propagating from the largest toward the smallest wavenumbers, and is described by a self-similar solution of a new (third) kind. This stage follows the previously studied stage of an initial explosive propagation of the spectral front from the smallest to the largest wavenumbers reaching arbitrarily large wavenumbers in a finite time, and which was described by a self-similar so…
The process of the kinetic energy and kinetic helicity transfer over the spectrum in an incompressible, rapidly rotating turbulent flow is considered. An analogue of the Fjortoft theorem for 3D rapidly rotating turbulence is proposed. It is shown that, similar to 2D turbulence, there are two cascades simultaneously: the inverse cascade of the kinetic energy and the direct cascade of the kinetic helicity, which in the case of 2D turbulence corresponds to the cascade of enstrophy. The proposed scenario is in agreement with our earlier calculations, some recent numerical simulations, and physical…
A landmark of out-of-equilibrium physics is Kolmogorov's phenomenological theory of turbulence. However, the past 20 years have provided evidence of a new, universal type of turbulence cascade, which does not abide to Kolmogorov physics. To address this issue, we revise the classical Kolmogorov cascade, by superimposing on it a mechanism of active information exchange between large and small scales. The new theory yields predictions for the dissipation rate, integral length scale and turbulence kinetic energy, as well as a criterion for the transition of the system from the new, to the classic…
We study Kolmogorov flow on a three dimensional, periodic domain with aspect ratios fixed to unity. Using an energy method, we give a concise proof of the linear stability of the laminar flow profile. Since turbulent motion is observed for high enough Reynolds numbers, we expect the domain of attraction of the laminar flow to be bounded by the stable manifolds of simple invariant solutions. We show one such edge state to be an equilibrium with a spatial structure reminiscent of that found in plane Couette flow, with stream wise rolls on the largest spatial scales. When tracking the edge state,…
We use two related non-stationarity functions as measures of the degree of scale-by-scale non-equilibrium in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The values of these functions indicate significant non-equilibrium at the upper end of the inertial range. Wind tunnel data confirm Lundgren's (2002, 2003) prediction that the two-point separation $r$ where the second and third order structure functions are closest to their Kolmogorov scalings is proportional to the Taylor length scale $λ$, and that both structure functions increasingly distance themselves from their Kolmogorov equilibrium form as $r$ i…
This paper is the forth part of our series of work, is devoted to the analysis on the multiscales and cascade aspects of the statistical theory of isotropic turbulence based on the new Sedov-type solution. In this paper, we use the explicit map method to analyse the nonlinear dynamical behaviour for cascade in isotorpic turbulence. This deductive scale analysis is shown to provide the first visual evidence of the celebrated Richardson cascade, and reveals in partcular its multiscale character. The results also indicate that the energy cascading process has remarkable similarities with the dete…
We have found that in two-dimensional Kolmogorov flow a single spatially-localized turbulence (SLT) exists stably and travels with a constant speed on average switching the moving direction randomly and intermittently for moderate values of control parameters: Reynolds number and the flow rate. We define the coarse-grained position and velocity of an SLT and separate the motion of the SLT from its internal turbulent dynamics by introducing a co-moving frame. The switching process of an SLT represented by the coarse-grained velocity seems to be a random telegraph signal. Focusing on the asymmet…
Experiments and numerical simulations show that quantum turbulence exists in two distinct limiting regimes: Kolmogorov turbulence (which shares with classical turbulence the important property of a cascade of kinetic energy from large eddies to small eddies) and Vinen turbulence (which is more similar to a random flow). In this work, we define a mesoscale helicity for the superfluid, which, tested in numerical experiments, distinguishes the two turbulent regimes, quantifying the amount of nonlocal vortex interactions and the orientation of the vortex lines.
Experiments and numerical simulations of turbulent $^4$He and $^3$He-B have established that, at hydrodynamic length scales larger than the average distance between quantum vortices, the energy spectrum obeys the same 5/3 Kolmogorov law which is observed in the homogeneous isotropic turbulence of ordinary fluids. The importance of the 5/3 law is that it points to the existence of a Richardson energy cascade from large eddies to small eddies. However, there is also evidence of quantum turbulent regimes without Kolmogorov scaling. This raises the important questions of why, in such regimes, the …
We use the 2 particle irreducible Schwinger-Keldysh effective action to set up consistent equations for the velocity and pressure correlations of a turbulent flow. We use these equations to derive the Kadanoff-Baym equations describing the relaxation to Kolmogorov turbulence in the absence of mean velocities.
Using direct numerical simulation of hydrodynamic turbulence with helicity forcing applied at all scales, a near-maximum helical turbulent state is obtained, with an inverse energy cascade at scales larger than the energy forcing scale and a forward helicity cascade at scales smaller than the energy forcing scale. In contrast to previous studies using decimated triads, our simulations contain all possible triads. By computing the shell-to-shell energy fluxes, we show that the inverse energy cascade results from weakly non-local interactions among homochiral triads. Varying the helicity injecti…
In this Letter we show that a bifurcation cascade and fully sustained turbulence can share the phase space of a fluid flow system, resulting in the presence of competing stable attractors. We analyse the toroidal pipe flow, which undergoes subcritical transition to turbulence at low pipe curvatures and supercritical transition at high curvatures, as was previously documented. We provide decisive evidence that the nature of the supercritical transition is of Ruelle--Takens type and that, in a narrow range of intermediate curvatures, its dynamics competes with that of sustained turbulence emergi…
In this paper, with the aid of direct numerical simulations (DNS) of forced turbulence in a periodic domain, we mathematically reformulate the Kolmogorov-Richardson energy cascade in terms of vortex stretching. By using the description, we prove that if the Navier-Stokes flow satisfies a new regularity criterion in terms of the enstrophy production rate, then the flow does not blow up. Our DNS results seem to support this regularity criterion. Next, we mathematically construct the hierarchy of tubular vortices, which is statistically self-similar in the inertial range. Under the assumptions of…
Kolmogorov's similarity turbulence theory in a Lagrangian frame is assessed with new direct numerical simulations (DNS) of isotropic turbulence with and without hyperviscosity, which attain higher Reynolds numbers than previously available. It is demonstrated that hyperviscous simulations can be used to accurately predict second order Lagrangian velocity structure function (LVSF-2) in the inertial range. The results give strong support for Kolmogorov's Lagrangian similarity assumption and allow to compute the universal constant of the LVSF-2, which gives $C_0=7.5 \pm 0.2$, with a new level of …
This paper is a synopsis of the recent book A. Boritchev, S. Kuksin, \textit{One-Dimensional Turbulence and the Stochastic Burgers Equation}, AMS Publications, 2021 (to appear). The book is dedicated to the stochastic Burgers equation as a model for 1d turbulence, and the paper discusses its content in relation to the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence.
An increasing number of numerical simulations and experiments describing the turbulent spectrum of Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) mixing layers came to light over the past few years. Results reported in recent studies allow to rule out a turbulence {\it à la Kolmogorov} as a mechanism acting on a self similar RT turbulent mixing layer. A different mechanism is presented, which complies with both numerical and experimental results and relates RT flow to other buoyant flows.
Qian Jian, a Chinese theoretical physicist and fluid dynamicist, devoted the second part of his scientific life to the physical understanding of small-scale turbulence to the exclusion of all else. Qian developed his own statistical theory of small-scale turbulence, based on the Liouville (1853) equation and a perturbation variational approach to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, which is compatible with the Kolmogorov-Oboukhov energy spectrum. His statistical theory of small-scale turbulence, which appears mathematically and physically valid, successfully led to his contributions to (i) …
We report the generation of large coherent vortices via inverse energy cascade in Faraday wave driven turbulence. The motion of floaters in the Faraday waves is three dimensional but its horizontal velocity fluctuations show unexpected similarity with two-dimensional turbulence. The inverse cascade is detected by measuring frequency spectra of the Lagrangian velocity, and it is confirmed by computing the third moment of the horizontal velocity fluctuations. This is observed in deep water in a broad range of wavelengths. The results broaden the scope of recent findings on Faraday waves in thin …
Intermittency (externally induced) in the two-dimensional (2D) enstrophy cascade is shown to be able to maintain a finite enstrophy along with a vorticity conservation anomaly. Intermittency mechanisms of three-dimensional (3D) energy cascade and 2D enstrophy cascade in fully-developed turbulence (FDT) seem to have some universal features. The parabolic-profile approximation (PPA) for the singularity spectrum f(a) in multi-fractal model is used and extended to the appropriate microscale regimes to exhibit these features. The PPA is also shown to afford, unlike the generic multi-fractal model, …
We look at various correlation functions, which include those that involve both the velocity and the vorticity fields, in 2-D isotropic homogeneous decaying turbulence. We adopt the more intuitive approach due to Kolmogorov (and subsequently, Landau in his text on fluid dynamics) and show that how the 2-D turbulence results, obtainable using other methods, may be established in a simpler way. Also, some experimentally verifiable correlation functions in the dissipation range have been derived for the same system. The paper also showcases the inability of the Kolmogorov-Landau approach to get the …
Self-organized large-scale flow structures occur in a wide range of turbulent flows. Yet, their emergence, dynamics, and interplay with small-scale turbulence are not well understood. Here, we investigate such self-organized turbulent superstructures in three-dimensional turbulent Kolmogorov flow with large-scale drag. Through extensive simulations, we uncover their low-dimensional dynamics featuring transitions between several stable and meta-stable large-scale structures as a function of the damping parameter. The main dissipation mechanism for the turbulent superstructures is the generation…

We study the statistics of free-surface turbulence at large Reynolds numbers produced by direct numerical simulations in a fluid layer at different thickness with fixed characteristic forcing scale. We observe the production of a transient inverse cascade, with a duration which depends on the thickness of the layer, followed by a transition to three-dimensional turbulence initially produced close to the bottom, no-slip boundary. By switching off the forcing, we study the decaying turbulent regime and we find that it cannot be described by an exponential law. Our results show that boundary cond…
We study the time evolution of velocity and pressure gradients in isotropic turbulence, by quantifying their decorrelation time scales as one follows fluid particles in the flow. The Lagrangian analysis uses data in a public database generated using direct numerical simulation of the Naiver-Stokes equations, at a Reynolds number 430. It is confirmed that when averaging over the entire domain, correlation functions decay on timescales on the order of the mean Kolmogorov turnover time scale, computed from the globally averaged rate of dissipation and viscosity. However, when performing the analy…
We study stationary solutions in the differential kinetic equation, which was introduced in for description of a local dual cascade wave turbulence. We give a full classification of single-cascade states in which there is a finite flux of only one conserved quantity. Analysis of the steady-state spectrum is based on a phase-space analysis of orbits of the underlying dynamical system. The orbits of the dynamical system demonstrate the blow-up behaviour which corresponds to a "sharp front" where the spectrum vanishes at a finite wave number. The roles of the KZ and thermodynamic scaling as inter…
The spectral slope of strong MHD turbulence has recently been a matter of controversy. While Goldreich-Sridhar model (1995) predicts Kolmogorov's -5/3 slope of turbulence, shallower slopes were often reported by numerical studies. We argue that earlier numerics was affected by driving due to a diffuse locality of energy transfer in MHD case. Our highest-resolution simulation (3072^2x1024) has been able to reach the asymptotic -5/3 regime of the energy slope. Additionally, we found that so-called dynamic alignment, proposed in the model with -3/2 slope, saturates and therefore can not affect as…
We investigate the statistical properties of Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence in a convective cell of high aspect ratio, in which one transverse side is much smaller that the others. We show that the scale of confinement determines the Bolgiano scale of the system, which in the late stage of the evolution is characterized by the Kolmogorov-Obukhov and the Bolgiano-Obukhov phenomenology at small and large scales, respectively. The coexistence of these regimes is associated to a three to two-dimensional transition of the system which occurs when the width of the turbulent mixing layer becomes larger t…
The classical turbulence theory by Kolmogorov is reconsidered using Navier-Stokes' equation generalized to 6D physical-plus-eddy space. Strong pseudo-singularity is shown to reveal itself along the boundary `ridge' line separating the dissipation and inertial sub-ranges surrounding the origin of the eddy space. A speculation is made that this singularity is generated by two dipoles of opposite sign aligned on the common axis. It is supported by the observation that the universal power spectrum calculated rediscovers the Kolmogorov's -5/3 power law as independent of the dimensional approach.
We performed numerical simulations of decaying quantum turbulence by using a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, that includes a beyond mean field correction and a nonlocal interaction potential. The nonlocal potential is chosen in order to mimic He II by introducing a roton minimum in the excitation spectrum. We observe that at large scales the statistical behavior of the flow is independent of the interaction potential, but at scales smaller than the intervortex distance a Kelvin wave cascade is enhanced in the generalized model. In this range, the incompressible kinetic energy spectrum o…
The deformation and dynamics of a single droplet in isotropic turbulence is studied using a Lattice Boltzmann diffuse interface model involving exact boundary flow conditions to allow for the creation of an external turbulent flow. We focus on a small, sub-Kolmogorov droplet, whose scale is much smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale of the turbulent flow. The external flow field is obtained via pseudo-spectral simulation data describing the trajectory of a passive tracer in isotropic turbulence. In this way we combine the microscopic scale of the droplet and the macroscopic scale of the tur…
The genesis, growth and rupture of intracranial aneurysm (IA) are open questions in neurovascular medicine until the present moment. The complexity of aneurysm mechanobiology and pathobiology staggeringly combine intertwining biological and physical processes that are tightly connected. Recently, transition to turbulence in IA blood flow is thought to play a central role in IA growth and rupture as it can be directly linked to endothelial dysfunction. However, the problem of turbulence brings unprecedented complications to the topic. We found turbulence in IA to be of non-Kolmogorov type. For …
Based on measurements of nonlinear second sound resonances in a high-quality resonator, we have observed a steady-state wave energy cascade in He II involving a flux of energy through the spectral range towards high frequencies. We show that the energy balance in the wave system is nonlocal in K-space and that the frequency scales of energy pumping and dissipation are widely separated. The wave amplitude distribution follows a power law over a wide range of frequencies. Numerical computations yield results in agreement with the experimental observations. We suggest that second sound cascades o…
Solar wind turbulence is dominated by Alfvénic fluctuations but the power spectral exponents somewhat surprisingly evolve toward the Kolmogorov value of -5/3, that of hydrodynamic turbulence. We show that at 1AU the turbulence decomposes linearly into two coexistent components perpendicular and parallel to the local average magnetic field. The first of these is consistent with propagating Alfvén wavepackets and shows the scaling expected of Alfvénic turbulence, namely Irosnikov- Kraichnan. The second shows Kolmogorov scaling which we also find in the number and magnetic energy density, and Poy…
The Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) turbulence is investigated by means of high resolution numerical simulations. The main question addressed here is on whether RT phenomenology can be considered as a manifestation of universality of Navier--Stokes equations with respect to forcing mechanisms. At a theoretical level the situation is far from being firmly established and, indeed, contrasting predictions have been formulated. Our first aim here is to clarify the above controversy through a deep analysis of scaling behavior of relevant statistical observables. The effects of intermittency on the mean field…
We analyze the initial, kinematic stage of magnetic field evolution in an isotropic and homogeneous turbulent conducting fluid with a rough velocity field, v(l) ~ l^alpha, alpha<1. We propose that in the limit of small magnetic Prandtl number, i.e. when ohmic resistivity is much larger than viscosity, the smaller the roughness exponent, alpha, the larger the magnetic Reynolds number that is needed to excite magnetic fluctuations. This implies that numerical or experimental investigations of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence with small Prandtl numbers need to achieve extremely high resolution in o…
The Weak Turbulence Theory has been applied to waves in thin elastic plates obeying the Föppl-Von Kármán dynamical equations. Subsequent experiments have shown a strong discrepancy between the theoretical predictions and the measurements. Both the dynamical equations and the Weak Turbulence Theory treatment require some restrictive hypotheses. Here a direct numerical simulation of the Föppl-Von Kármán equations is performed and reproduces qualitatively and quantitatively the experimental results when the experimentally measured damping rate of waves $γ_\mathbf{k}= a + bk^2$ is used. This confi…
According to Richardson's cascade description of turbulence, large vortices break up to form smaller ones, thereby transferring kinetic energy towards smaller scales. Energy dissipation occurs at the smallest scales due to viscosity. We study this energy cascade in a phenomenological model of vortex breakdown. The model is a binary tree of decreasing masses connected by softening springs, with dampers acting on the lowest level. The masses and stiffnesses between levels change according to a power law. The different levels represent different scales, enabling the definition of "mass wavenumber…
We consider long simulations of 2D Kolmogorov turbulence body-forced by $\sin4y \ex$ on the torus $(x,y) \in [0,2π]^2$ with the purpose of extracting simple invariant sets or `exact recurrent flows' embedded in this turbulence. Each recurrent flow represents a sustained closed cycle of dynamical processes which underpins the turbulence. These are used to reconstruct the turbulence statistics in the spirit of Periodic Orbit Theory derived for certain types of low dimensional chaos. The approach is found to be reasonably successful at a low value of the forcing where the flow is close to but not…
This investigation presents evidence of the relation between the dynamics of intense events in small-scale turbulence and the energy cascade. We use the generalised (Hölder) means to track the temporal evolution of intense events of the enstrophy and the dissipation in direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence. We show that these events are modulated by large-scale fluctuations, and that their evolution is consistent with a local multiplicative cascade, as hypothesised by a broad class of intermittency models of turbulence.
We investigate the dynamics of the two-dimensional periodic Kolmogorov flow of a viscoelastic fluid, described by the Oldroyd-B model, by means of direct numerical simulations. Above a critical Weissenberg number the flow displays a transition from stationary to randomly fluctuating states, via periodic ones. The increasing complexity of the flow in both time and space at progressively higher values of elasticity accompanies the establishment of mixing features. The peculiar dynamical behavior observed in the simulations is found to be related to the appearance of filamental propagating patter…
It has long been established that turbulence energy spectra scale on the Kolmogorov (1941) variables over a wide range of Reynolds numbers and in vastly different physical systems, depending only on the dissipation rate, the kinematic viscosity and the wavenumber. On the other hand, the analogous study of structure functions in real space is strongly influenced by the Kolmogorov (1962) refined theory, which introduced a dependence on a large length scale Lext, characteristic of the system size. If such a dependence exists it is surprising that it does not show up in the study of wavenumber spe…
We investigate three-dimensional quantum turbulence as described by the Gross-Pitaevskii model using the analytical method exploited in the Onsager "ideal turbulence" theory. We derive the scale-independence of the scale-to-scale kinetic energy flux and establish a double-cascade scenario: at scales much larger than the mean intervortex $\ell_i$, the Richardson cascade becomes dominant, whereas at scales much smaller than $\ell_i$, another type of cascade is induced by quantum stress. We then evaluate the corresponding velocity power spectrum using a phenomenological argument. The relation bet…
We relate the intermittent fluctuations of velocity gradients in turbulence to a whole range of local dissipation scales generalizing the picture of a single mean dissipation length. The statistical distribution of these local dissipation scales as a function of Reynolds number is determined in numerical simulations of forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence with a spectral resolution never applied before which exceeds the standard one by at least a factor of eight. The core of the scale distribution agrees well with a theoretical prediction. Increasing Reynolds number causes the generation of…
The process of star formation in interstellar molecular clouds is believed to be controlled by driven supersonic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. We suggest that in the inertial range such turbulence obeys the Kolmogorov law, while in the dissipative range it behaves as Burgers turbulence developing shock singularities. On the base of the She-Leveque analytical model we then predict the velocity power spectrum in the inertial range to be E_k ~ k^{-1.74}. This result reproduces the observational Larson law, <u^2_l>~ l^{0.74...0.76}, [Larson, MNRAS 194 (1981) 809] and agrees well with recent nume…
