We present analytic results for the partonic cross sections for the production of a Higgs boson via the fusion of two bottom quarks at N$^3$LO in QCD perturbation theory in the five-flavour scheme. We combine this perturbative result with NLO accurate predictions in the four-flavour scheme that include the full bottom quark mass dependence by appropriately removing any double-counting stemming from contributions included in both predictions. We thereby obtain state-of-the-art predictions for the inclusive production probability of a Higgs boson via bottom quark fusion at hadron colliders.
We present the theoretical results on the forward Lambda_b production in pp collisions obtained within the soft QCD, namely the quark gluon string model, at LHC energies. It can give us useful information on the Regge trajectories of the (b{\bar b}) mesons. An opportunity to find the information on the intrinsic charm and bottom in the proton by analyzing the forward heavy flavour hadron production in pp collisions is discussed.
A bottom-up approach has been adopted to identify a flavour model that agrees with present experimental measurements. The charged fermion mass hierarchies suggest that only the top Yukawa term should be present at the renormalisable level. The flavour symmetry of the Lagrangian including the fermionic kinetic terms and only the top Yukawa is then a combination of $U(2)$ and $U(3)$ factors. Lighter charged fermion and active neutrino masses and quark and lepton mixings arise considering specific spurion fields. The associated phenomenology is investigated and the model turns out to have almost …
We present a novel procedure for identifying discrete, leptonic flavour symmetries, given a class of unitary mixing matrices. By creating explicit 3D representations for generators of residual symmetries in both the charged lepton and neutrino sector, we reconstruct large(r) non-abelian flavour groups using the GAP language for computational finite algebra. We use experimental data to construct only those generators that yield acceptable (or preferable) mixing patterns. Such an approach is advantageous because it 1) can reproduce known groups from other 'top-down' scans while elucidating their…
We present predictions for b-quark production in photoprodcution and compare with experimental data from HERA. Our theoretical predictions are obtained at next-to-leading-order in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme, an approach which takes into account the finite mass of the b quarks. We use realistic evolved nonperturbative fragmentation functions obtained from fits to e+e- data. We find in general good agreement of data with both the GM-VFNS and the FFNS calculations, while the more precise ZEUS data seem to prefer the GM-VFNS predictions.
The main arguments in the discussion of the proper treatment of the total inclusive cross section for bottom-quark associated Higgs-boson production are briefly reviewed. A simple and pragmatic formula for the combination of the so-called four- and five-flavour schemes is suggested, including the treatment of the respective theory error estimates. The numerical effects of this matching formula are discussed.
The associated production of top-antitop-bottom-antibottom quarks is a relevant irreducible background for Higgs boson analyses in the top-antitop-Higgs production channel, with Higgs decaying into a bottom-antibottom quark pair. We implement this process in the PowHel event generator, considering the bottom quarks as massive in all steps of the computation which involves hard-scattering matrix-elements in the 4-flavour number scheme combined with 4-flavour Parton Distribution Functions. Predictions with NLO QCD + Parton Shower accuracy, as obtained by PowHel + PYTHIA, are compared to those wh…
Parameters and light fields of the QCD Lagrangian with two heavy flavours, b and c, are related to those in the low-energy effective theory without these flavours, to three-loop accuracy taking into account the exact dependence on m_c/m_b. Similar relations for bilinear quark currents are also considered.
Higgs-boson production in association with bottom quarks is an important discovery channel for supersymmetric Higgs particles at the Tevatron and the LHC. We present higher-order QCD predictions for inclusive cross sections and for the production of a Higgs boson in association with high-p_T bottom quarks. We compare calculations performed in a four-flavour scheme based on the parton processes gg,qqbar -> b bbar H with five-flavour scheme calculations based on bottom-quark scattering.
We calculate the decay width of $h^0 \to b \bar{b}$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with quark-flavour violation (QFV) at full one-loop level. The effect of $\tilde{c}-\tilde{t}$ mixing and $\tilde{s}-\tilde{b}$ mixing is studied taking into account the constraints from the B-meson data. We discuss and compare in detail the decays $h^0 \to c \bar{c}$ and $h^0 \to b \bar{b}$ within the framework of the perturbative mass insertion technique using the Flavour Expansion Theorem. The deviation of both decay widths from the Standard Model results can be quite large. While in $h^0…
We review the status of heavy flavour physics at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by summarizing recent top quark and B physics results from CDF and DO. In particular we discuss the measurement of the top quark mass and top production cross section as well as B meson lifetimes and time dependent BB= mixing results. An outlook of perspectives for top and B physics in Run II starting in 1999 is also given.
I present a mini-review on the physics of heavy flavour baryons where I concentrate on the HQET description of their exclusive decay modes. In particular I discuss the structure of current-induced bottom baryon to charm baryon transitions, and the structure of pion and photon transitions between heavy charm or bottom baryons in the Heavy Quark Symmetry limit as m_Q->\infty. The emphasis is on the structural similarity of the Heavy Quark Symmetry predictions for the three types of transitions. The requisite coupling expressions are discussed both in the covariant framework as well as in terms o…
We evaluate analytically the cross section for Higgs production plus one jet through bottom quark fusion. By considering the small pT limit we derive expressions for the resummation coefficients governing the structure of large logarithms, and compare these expressions with those available in the literature.
Dynamical 2+1 flavour lattice QCD is used to calculate the splittings between the masses of mesons and baryons containing a single static heavy quark and domain-wall light and strange quarks. Our calculations are based on the dynamical domain-wall gauge field configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations at a spatial volume of (2.7 fm)^3 and a range of quark masses with a lightest value corresponding to a (partially-quenched) pion mass of 275 MeV. When extrapolated to the physical values of the light quark masses, the results of our calculations are generally in good agreement w…
The region of small transverse momentum in q-qbar- and gg-initiated processes must be studied in the framework of resummation to account for the large, logarithmically-enhanced contributions to physical observables. In this letter, we study resummed differential cross-sections for Higgs production via bottom-quark fusion. We find that the differential distribution peaks at approximately 15 GeV, a number of great experimental importance to measuring this production channel.
We review the status of heavy flavour production in QCD. Comparison of experimental and theoretical results for top and bottom production are given. Selected topics in charm production are also discussed.
We present recent developments concerning Higgs production in bottom quark annihilation and gluon fusion. For bottom quark annihilation, we show the transverse momentum distribution of the associated jets. Furthermore, we discuss the distribution of events into n-jet bins for n=0 and n>0 at NNLO and NLO, respectively. For gluon fusion, the quality of the heavy-top limit for differential quantities at O(α_s^4) is studied by taking into account higher order terms in the 1/m_{top} expansion.
The main production mechanism for supersymmetric Higgs particles at hadron colliders crucially depends on the size of their Yukawa couplings to bottom quarks. For sufficiently large tan(beta) the total cross section for some of the neutral Higgs bosons in the MSSM is dominated by bottom-quark fusion. After an introduction to bottom-associated Higgs production, we discuss the complete O(alpha) electroweak and O(alpha_s) strong corrections for the bb-fusion channel in the MSSM. Choosing proper renormalization and input-parameter schemes, an improved Born approximation, constructed from previousl…
We compute the complete next-to-leading order SUSY-QCD corrections for the associated production of a charged Higgs boson with a top quark via bottom-gluon fusion. We investigate the applicability of the bottom parton description in detail. The higher order corrections can be split into real and virtual corrections for a general two Higgs doublet model and into additional massive supersymmetric loop contributions. We find that the perturbative behavior is well under control. The supersymmetric contributions consist of the universal bottom Yukawa coupling corrections and non-factorizable diagra…
The fully differential computation of the hadronic production cross section of a Higgs boson via bottom quarks is presented at NNLO in QCD. Several differential distributions with their corresponding scale uncertainties are presented for the 8 TeV LHC. This is the first application of the method of non-linear mappings for NNLO differential calculations at hadron colliders.
We investigate the prospects of detecting a Higgs pseudoscalar ($A^0$) in association with a $Z$ gauge boson produced from bottom quark fusion ($b\bar{b} \to ZA^0$) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A general two Higgs doublet model and the minimal supersymmetric standard model are adopted to study the discovery potential of $pp \to ZA^0 \to \ell \bar{\ell} b\bar{b} +X (\ell = e, μ)$, via $b\bar{b} \to ZA^0$ with physics backgrounds and realistic cuts. Promising results are found for $m_A \alt 400$ GeV in a general two Higgs doublet model when the heavier Higgs scalar ($H^0$) can decay …
We present a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation for the total cross section for inclusive Higgs pair production via bottom-quark fusion at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and the minimal supergravity model (mSUGRA). We emphasize the contributions of squark and gluino loops (SQCD) and the decoupling properties of our results for heavy squark and gluino masses. The enhanced couplings of the b quark to the Higgs bosons in supersymmetric models with large tanb yield large NLO SQCD corrections in some regions of parameter space.
We present the inclusive cross section at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in perturbative QCD for the production of a Higgs boson via bottom-quark fusion. We employ the five-flavour scheme, treating the bottom quark as a massless parton while retaining a non-vanishing Yukawa coupling to the Higgs boson. We find that the dependence of the hadronic cross section on the renormalisation and factorisation scales is substantially reduced. For judicious choices of the scales the perturbative expansion of the cross section shows a convergent behaviour. We present results for the N$^3$L…
I discuss the current status of the comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental data, relevant to the production of open charm and bottom quarks in photon-hadron and photon-photon collisions. I advocate the use of a formalism that matches fixed-order computations to resummed computations in order to make firm statements on heavy flavour production as described by perturbative QCD.
We review the production of charm and bottom quarks in two-photon collisions at e+e- colliders. The next-to-leading order QCD predictions for total cross sections and differential distributions are compared with recent experimental results.
We present a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation for the total cross section of inclusive Higgs pair production via bottom-quark fusion ($b\bar{b} \to hh$) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the Standard Model. The NLO QCD corrections lead to less dependence on the renormalization scale ($μ_R$) and the factorization scale ($μ_F$) than the leading-order (LO) cross section, and they significantly increase the LO cross section. The rate for inclusive Higgs pair production is small in the Standard Model, but can be large in models with enhanced couplings of the $b$ quark to th…
We study the production of a Higgs boson in association with bottom quarks in hadronic collisions, and present phenomenological predictions relevant to the 13 TeV LHC. Our results are accurate to the next-to-leading order in QCD, and matched to parton showers through the MC@NLO method; thus, they are fully differential and based on unweighted events, which we shower by using both Herwig++ and Pythia8. We perform the computation in both the four-flavour and the five-flavour schemes, whose results we compare extensively at the level of exclusive observables. In the case of the Higgs transverse m…
The production rates of primary vector and P-wave mesons in Z hadronic decays are analysed. The mass dependence of production rates for the bottom, charm, strange charm and three families of the light-flavour mesons is found to be very similar, allowing to relate the relative production rates for mesons with different flavours and, possibly, their masses. The strange axial mesons K_1(1273) and K_1(1402) might be assigned to the 1^+(1/2) and 1^+(3/2) levels degenerate with the 0^+(1/2) and 2^+(3/2) levels of the K^*_0(1430) and K^*_2(1430), respectively, if the observed K^*_0(1430) mass is repl…
We investigate the QCD effects in the production of neutral Higgs bosons via bottom quark fusion in both the standard model and the minimal supersymmetric standard model at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We include the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections (including supersymmetric QCD) and the threshold resummation effects. We use the soft-collinear effective theory to resum the large logarithms near threshold from soft gluon emission. Our results show that the resummation effects can enhance the total cross sections by about 5% compared with the NLO results.
We compute pseudorapidity and transverse momentum distributions for charm and bottom production at HERA. We examine the effect of next-to-leading order QCD corrections, the effect of possible intrinsic transverse momenta of the incoming partons, and of fragmentation. We compare our results with full Monte Carlo simulation using HERWIG. The importance of the hadronic component of the photon is also studied. We examine the possibility to distinguish among different parametrizations of the photon parton densities using charm production data, and the possibilty to extract information about the sma…
We compute the total cross-section for Higgs boson production in bottom-quark fusion using the so-called FONLL method for the matching of a scheme in which the $b$-quark is treated as a massless parton to that in which it is treated as a massive final-state particle, and extend our previous results to the case in which the next-to-next-to-leading-log five-flavor scheme result is combined with the next-to-leading-order O(as^3) four-flavor scheme computation.
For very large values of $\tanβ$, charged Higgs boson pair production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from the scattering of two bottom quarks can proceed dominantly. We investigated the cross sections of charged Higgs boson pair production via the subprocess $b\bar{b} \to H^+H^-$ at the LHC including the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). We find that the NLO QCD corrections can significantly reduce the dependence of the cross sections on the renormalization and factorization scales.
Higgs-boson production in association with bottom quarks is an important discovery channel for supersymmetric Higgs particles at hadron colliders for large values of tan(beta). We present the complete O(alpha) electroweak and O(alpha_s) strong corrections to associated bottom-Higgs production through bb fusion in the MSSM and improve this next-to-leading-order prediction by known two-loop contributions to the Higgs self-energies, as provided by the program FeynHiggs. Choosing proper renormalization and input-parameter schemes, the bulk of the corrections (in particular the leading terms for ta…
We present a next-to-leading order calculation of heavy flavour production in hadronic collisions that can be interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs. The calculation is performed in the context of the POWHEG method. It is suitable for the computation of charm, bottom and top hadroproduction. In the case of top production, spin correlations in the decay products are taken into account.
The total cross section for Higgs production in bottom-quark annihilation is evaluated at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. This is the first time that all terms at order alpha_s^2 are taken into account. We find a greatly reduced scale dependence with respect to lower order results, for both the factorization and the renormalization scales. The behavior of the result is consistent with earlier determinations of the appropriate factorization scale for this process of mu_F ~ M_H/4, and supports the validity of the bottom parton density approach for computing the total inclusive rate.…
We compute the total cross-section for Higgs boson production in bottom-quark fusion using the so-called FONLL method for the matching of a scheme in which the $b$-quark is treated as a massless parton to that in which it is treated as a massive final-state particle. We discuss the general framework for the application of the FONLL method to this process, and then we present explicit expressions for the case in which the next-to-next-to-leading-log five-flavor scheme result is combined with the leading-order $\cal O(α_s^2)$ four-flavor scheme computation. We compare our results in this case to…
This article describes the code SusHi (for "Supersymmetric Higgs") which calculates the cross sections $pp/p\bar{p}\rightarrowϕ+X$ in gluon fusion and bottom-quark annihilation in the SM and the MSSM, where $ϕ$ is any of the neutral Higgs bosons within these models. Apart from inclusive cross sections up to NNLO QCD, differential cross sections with respect to the Higgs' transverse momentum $p_T$ and (pseudo-)rapidity $y(η)$ can be calculated through NLO QCD. In case of gluon fusion, SusHi contains NLO QCD contributions from the third family of quarks and squarks, NNLO corrections due to top-q…
In this work, we explore the flavour changing decays $H_i \to b s$ in a general supersymmetric scenario. In these models, the flavour changing decays arise at loop-level but, originating from a dimension-four operator, do not decouple and may provide a first sign of new physics for heavy masses beyond collider reach. In the framework of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM), we find that the largest branching ratio of the lightest Higgs ($H_1$) is ${\cal O}(10^{-6})$ after imposing present experimental constraints. While heavy Higgs states may still present branchin…
The top quark can be naturally singled out from other fermions in the Standard Model due to its large mass, of the order of the electroweak scale. We follow this reasoning in models of pseudo Nambu Goldstone Boson composite Higgs, which may derive from an underlying confining dynamics. We consider a new class of flavour models, where the top quark obtains its mass via partial compositeness, while the lighter fermions acquire their masses by a deformation of the dynamics generated at a high flavour scale. One interesting feature of such scenario is that it can avoid all the flavour constraints …
In analogy with parton distribution functions, also parton fragmentation functions obey matching conditions when crossing heavy-flavour thresholds. We compute these matching conditions at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s in the MSbar scheme. Our results can be used for the dynamical generation of the heavy-flavour component in next-to-leading order fits to light-hadrons fragmentation functions. Furthermore, when computing perturbatively the charm fragmentation function from first principles and evolving it to higher scales, our matching conditions should be used fo…
Heavy flavours production in e-p DIS is studied at intermediate values of the transferred four-momentum square, under the assumption of boson-gluon-fusion mechanism dominance (no intrinsic heavy flavours contributions). In this framework different expressions for the splitting functions in the gluon density evolution equation, with respect to the standard (DGLAP) ones, are explicitly derived.
We study Higgs production through weak boson fusion with subsequent decay to bottom quarks. By combining jet substructure techniques and matrix element methods in different limits we motivate this channel as a probe of the bottom-Yukawa interactions in the boosted regime. In particular we ameliorate the "no-go" results of cut-and-count analyses in this channel. After applying a data-driven reconstruction approach we find that the Higgs-bottom coupling can be limited to $0.82 < y_b/y_b^{\text{SM}} <1.14$ with $600~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$.
In this study, predictions obtained in the four and in the five flavour schemes are compared for two important processes involving heavy flavours at the LHC: the production of a $Z$ or a Higgs boson in association with $b$ quarks. In particular we obtain predictions with \Sherpa's \MCatNLO implementation for the four--flavour scheme, treating the $b$'s as massive, and with multijet merging at leading and next-to leading order for the five--flavour scheme. While differences between the two schemes, at the inclusive level, are well understood from resummation of possibly large logs into the $b$-…
In this work we explore first necessary steps to contruct a fully massive version of a variable flavour number scheme. In particular we focus, as an example, on an extension of the five-flavour scheme, where instead of neglecting explicit initial state quark mass effects, we retain all massive dependence, while keeping the resummation properties of the massless five-flavour scheme. We name this scheme five-flavour-massive (5FMS) scheme. Apart from consistently modified parton distribution functions, we provide all the ingredients that are needed to implement this scheme at MC@NLO accuracy, in …
We consider effective Lagrangians which, after electroweak- and family-symmetry breaking, yield fermionic mass matrices and/or other flavoured couplings exhibiting residual family symmetries (RFS). Thinking from the bottom up, these RFS intimately link ultraviolet (UV) Beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) physics to infrared flavour phenomenology without direct reference to any (potentially unfalsifiable) UV dynamics. While this discussion is typically performed at the level of RFS group generators and the UV flavour groups they can close, we now also focus on the RFS-implied shape of the low-energ…
We apply the MC@NLO formalism to the production of heavy-quark pairs in pointlike photon-hadron collisions. By combining this result with its analogue relevant to hadron-hadron collisions, we obtain NLO predictions matched to parton showers for the photoproduction of QQ^{-} pairs. We compare MC@NLO results to the measurements of c- and b-flavoured hadron observables performed by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA.
The LHC data on the forward heavy flavour hadron production can be a new unique source for estimation of intrinsic charm and bottom contributions to the proton. For example, we analyze the forward heavy baryon production, namely $Λ_b$-baryon, within the soft QCD quark gluon string model and present the predictions for observables which could be measured at the LHC. We also present some predictions for the $D$-meson production in $pp$ collisions made within the perturbative QCD including the intrinsic charm in the proton that can be verified at the LHC.
We use QCD Laplace sum-rules to predict masses of open-flavour heavy-light hybrids where one of the hybrid's constituent quarks is a charm or bottom and the other is an up, down, or strange. We compute leading-order, diagonal correlation functions of several hybrid interpolating currents, taking into account QCD condensates up to dimension-six, and extract hybrid mass predictions for all $J^P\in\{0^{\pm},\,1^{\pm}\}$, as well as explore possible mixing effects with conventional quark-antiquark mesons. Within theoretical uncertainties, our results are consistent with a degeneracy between the he…
We compute the total cross-section for $Z$ boson production in bottom-quark fusion, applying to this case the method we previously used for Higgs production in bottom fusion. Namely, we match, through the FONLL procedure, the next-to-next-to-leading-log five-flavor scheme result, in which the $b$~quark is treated as a massless parton, with the next-to-leading-order $\order{α_s^3}$ four-flavor scheme computation in which bottom is treated as a massive final-state particle. Our computation provides a test-case for the discussion of issues of scale dependence and treatment of heavy quarks, which …
We compute total cross sections for charm and bottom photoproduction at HERA energies, and discuss the relevant theoretical uncertainties. In particular we discuss the problems arising from the small-$x$ region, the uncertainties in the gluon parton density, and the uncertainties in the hadronic component of the cross section. Total electroproduction cross sections, calculated in the Weizsäcker-Williams approximation, are also given.
We calculate the O(alpha alpha_s) corrections to the relationships between the MS-bar Yukawa couplings and the pole masses of the first five quark flavours in the standard model. We also present the corresponding relationships between the MS-bar and pole masses, which emerge as by-products of our main analysis. The occurring self-energies are evaluated using the method of asymptotic expansion.
We present predictions for the inclusive productions of the D meson originating from bottom hadrons at the CERN LHC in the general-mass variable-flavour-number scheme at next-to-leading order. We present results using two methods to describe the transition for $b\rightarrow D$: a two-step transition $b\rightarrow B \rightarrow D$, based on the $b\rightarrow B$ fragmentation functions and the spectra for $B\rightarrow D$ as measured by CLEO and a one-step transition based on the fragmentation functions for $b\rightarrow D$. The results of both approaches are compared.
