In this paper, we propose and end-to-end deep Chinese font generation system. This system can generate new style fonts by interpolation of latent style-related embeding variables that could achieve smooth transition between different style. Our method is simpler and more effective than other methods, which will help to improve the font design efficiency

Previous works on font generation mainly focus on the standard print fonts where character's shape is stable and strokes are clearly separated. There is rare research on brush handwriting font generation, which involves holistic structure changes and complex strokes transfer. To address this issue, we propose a novel GAN-based image translation model by integrating the skeleton information. We first extract the skeleton from training images, then design an image encoder and a skeleton encoder to extract corresponding features. A self-attentive refined attention module is devised to guide the m…
This paper mainly discusses the generation of personalized fonts as the problem of image style transfer. The main purpose of this paper is to design a network framework that can extract and recombine the content and style of the characters. These attempts can be used to synthesize the entire set of fonts with only a small amount of characters. The paper combines various depth networks such as Convolutional Neural Network, Multi-layer Perceptron and Residual Network to find the optimal model to extract the features of the fonts character. The result shows that those characters we have generated…
In this paper, we propose a Seed-Augment-Train/Transfer (SAT) framework that contains a synthetic seed image dataset generation procedure for languages with different numeral systems using freely available open font file datasets. This seed dataset of images is then augmented to create a purely synthetic training dataset, which is in turn used to train a deep neural network and test on held-out real world handwritten digits dataset spanning five Indic scripts, Kannada, Tamil, Gujarati, Malayalam, and Devanagari. We showcase the efficacy of this approach both qualitatively, by training a Bounda…

The automatic generation of Chinese fonts is an important problem involved in many applications. The predominated methods for the Chinese font generation are based on the deep generative models, especially the generative adversarial networks (GANs). However, existing GAN-based methods (say, CycleGAN) for the Chinese font generation usually suffer from the mode collapse issue, mainly due to the lack of effective guidance information. This paper proposes a novel information guidance module called the skeleton guided channel expansion (SGCE) module for the Chinese font generation through integrat…
In this work, we propose a novel framework named Coconditional Autoencoding Adversarial Networks (CocoAAN) for Chinese font learning, which jointly learns a generation network and two encoding networks of different feature domains using an adversarial process. The encoding networks map the glyph images into style and content features respectively via the pairwise substitution optimization strategy, and the generation network maps these two kinds of features to glyph samples. Together with a discriminative network conditioned on the extracted features, our framework succeeds in producing realis…
This research is the second phase in a series of investigations on developing an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of Arabic historical documents and examining how different modeling procedures interact with the problem. The first research studied the effect of Transformers on our custom-built Arabic dataset. One of the downsides of the first research was the size of the training data, a mere 15000 images from our 30 million images, due to lack of resources. Also, we add an image enhancement layer, time and space optimization, and Post-Correction layer to aid the model in predicting the corr…
Designing fonts for Chinese characters is highly labor-intensive and time-consuming. While the latest methods successfully generate the English alphabet vector font, despite the high demand for automatic font generation, Chinese vector font generation has been an unsolved problem owing to its complex shape and numerous characters. This study addressed the problem of automatically generating Chinese vector fonts from only a single style and content reference. We proposed a novel network architecture with Transformer and loss functions to capture structural features without differentiable render…

Chinese font recognition (CFR) has gained significant attention in recent years. However, due to the sparsity of labeled font samples and the structural complexity of Chinese characters, CFR is still a challenging task. In this paper, a DropRegion method is proposed to generate a large number of stochastic variant font samples whose local regions are selectively disrupted and an inception font network (IFN) with two additional convolutional neural network (CNN) structure elements, i.e., a cascaded cross-channel parametric pooling (CCCP) and global average pooling, is designed. Because the dist…

The generation of Chinese fonts has a wide range of applications. The currently predominated methods are mainly based on deep generative models, especially the generative adversarial networks (GANs). However, existing GAN-based models usually suffer from the well-known mode collapse problem. When mode collapse happens, the kind of GAN-based models will be failure to yield the correct fonts. To address this issue, we introduce a one-bit stroke encoding and a few-shot semi-supervised scheme (i.e., using a few paired data as semi-supervised information) to explore the local and global structure i…

Although online handwriting verification has made great progress recently, the verification performances are still far behind the real usage owing to the small scale of the datasets as well as the limited biometric mediums. Therefore, this paper proposes a new handwriting verification benchmark dataset named Multimodal Signature and Digit String (MSDS), which consists of two subsets: MSDS-ChS (Chinese Signatures) and MSDS-TDS (Token Digit Strings), contributed by 402 users, with 20 genuine samples and 20 skilled forgeries per user per subset. MSDS-ChS consists of handwritten Chinese signatures…

Automatic generation of high-quality Chinese fonts from a few online training samples is a challenging task, especially when the amount of samples is very small. Existing few-shot font generation methods can only synthesize low-resolution glyph images that often possess incorrect topological structures or/and incomplete strokes. To address the problem, this paper proposes FontTransformer, a novel few-shot learning model, for high-resolution Chinese glyph image synthesis by using stacked Transformers. The key idea is to apply the parallel Transformer to avoid the accumulation of prediction erro…
Generating new fonts is a time-consuming and labor-intensive task, especially in a language with a huge amount of characters like Chinese. Various deep learning models have demonstrated the ability to efficiently generate new fonts with a few reference characters of that style, but few models support cross-lingual font generation. This paper presents GAS-NeXt, a novel few-shot cross-lingual font generator based on AGIS-Net and Font Translator GAN, and improve the performance metrics such as Fréchet Inception Distance (FID), Structural Similarity Index Measure(SSIM), and Pixel-level Accuracy (p…

Offline Chinese handwriting text recognition is a long-standing research topic in the field of pattern recognition. In previous studies, text detection and recognition are separated, which leads to the fact that text recognition is highly dependent on the detection results. In this paper, we propose a robust end-to-end Chinese text page spotter framework. It unifies text detection and text recognition with text kernel that integrates global text feature information to optimize the recognition from multiple scales, which reduces the dependence of detection and improves the robustness of the sys…

Chinese character synthesis involves two related aspects, i.e., style maintenance and content consistency. Although some methods have achieved remarkable success in synthesizing a character with specified style from standard font, how to map characters to a specified style domain without losing their identifiability remains very challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel model named FontGAN, which integrates the character stylization and de-stylization into a unified framework. In our model, we decouple character images into style representation and content representation, which facilitate…

Chinese character style transfer is a very challenging problem because of the complexity of the glyph shapes or underlying structures and large numbers of existed characters, when comparing with English letters. Moreover, the handwriting of calligraphy masters has a more irregular stroke and is difficult to obtain in real-world scenarios. Recently, several GAN-based methods have been proposed for font synthesis, but some of them require numerous reference data and the other part of them have cumbersome preprocessing steps to divide the character into different parts to be learned and transferr…

In this paper, we investigate the Chinese calligraphy synthesis problem: synthesizing Chinese calligraphy images with specified style from standard font(eg. Hei font) images (Fig. 1(a)). Recent works mostly follow the stroke extraction and assemble pipeline which is complex in the process and limited by the effect of stroke extraction. We treat the calligraphy synthesis problem as an image-to-image translation problem and propose a deep neural network based model which can generate calligraphy images from standard font images directly. Besides, we also construct a large scale benchmark that co…
Generating a new font library is a very labor-intensive and time-consuming job for glyph-rich scripts. Despite the remarkable success of existing font generation methods, they have significant drawbacks; they require a large number of reference images to generate a new font set, or they fail to capture detailed styles with only a few samples. In this paper, we focus on compositional scripts, a widely used letter system in the world, where each glyph can be decomposed by several components. By utilizing the compositionality of compositional scripts, we propose a novel font generation framework,…
As handwriting input becomes more prevalent, the large symbol inventory required to support Chinese handwriting recognition poses unique challenges. This paper describes how the Apple deep learning recognition system can accurately handle up to 30,000 Chinese characters while running in real-time across a range of mobile devices. To achieve acceptable accuracy, we paid particular attention to data collection conditions, representativeness of writing styles, and training regimen. We found that, with proper care, even larger inventories are within reach. Our experiments show that accuracy only d…

Compared with other handwriting imitation methods, the handwriting style transfer's effect and efficiency have been significantly improved. The experiments showed that the shape of the generated Chinese characters is clear and the analysis of experimental data showed the Generative adversarial networks showed excellent performance…

Automatic character generation is an appealing solution for new typeface design, especially for Chinese typefaces including over 3700 most commonly-used characters. This task has two main pain points: (i) handwritten characters are usually associated with thin strokes of few information and complex structure which are error prone during deformation; (ii) thousands of characters with various shapes are needed to synthesize based on a few manually designed characters. To solve those issues, we propose a novel convolutional-neural-network-based model with three main techniques: collaborative stro…
In this paper, we investigate the Chinese font synthesis problem and propose a Pyramid Embedded Generative Adversarial Network (PEGAN) to automatically generate Chinese character images. The PEGAN consists of one generator and one discriminator. The generator is built using one encoder-decoder structure with cascaded refinement connections and mirror skip connections. The cascaded refinement connections embed a multiscale pyramid of downsampled original input into the encoder feature maps of different layers, and multi-scale feature maps from the encoder are connected to the corresponding feat…

Handwritten Text Recognition has achieved an impressive performance in public benchmarks. However, due to the high inter- and intra-class variability between handwriting styles, such recognizers need to be trained using huge volumes of manually labeled training data. To alleviate this labor-consuming problem, synthetic data produced with TrueType fonts has been often used in the training loop to gain volume and augment the handwriting style variability. However, there is a significant style bias between synthetic and real data which hinders the improvement of recognition performance. To deal w…

A few-shot font generation (FFG) method has to satisfy two objectives: the generated images should preserve the underlying global structure of the target character and present the diverse local reference style. Existing FFG methods aim to disentangle content and style either by extracting a universal representation style or extracting multiple component-wise style representations. However, previous methods either fail to capture diverse local styles or cannot be generalized to a character with unseen components, e.g., unseen language systems. To mitigate the issues, we propose a novel FFG meth…
Designing fonts for languages with a large number of characters, such as Japanese and Chinese, is an extremely labor-intensive and time-consuming task. In this study, we addressed the problem of automatically generating Japanese typographic fonts from only a few font samples, where the synthesized glyphs are expected to have coherent characteristics, such as skeletons, contours, and serifs. Existing methods often fail to generate fine glyph images when the number of style reference glyphs is extremely limited. Herein, we proposed a simple but powerful framework for extracting better style feat…

Automatic few-shot font generation is a practical and widely studied problem because manual designs are expensive and sensitive to the expertise of designers. Existing few-shot font generation methods aim to learn to disentangle the style and content element from a few reference glyphs, and mainly focus on a universal style representation for each font style. However, such approach limits the model in representing diverse local styles, and thus makes it unsuitable to the most complicated letter system, e.g., Chinese, whose characters consist of a varying number of components (often called "rad…

Automatic few-shot font generation aims to solve a well-defined, real-world problem because manual font designs are expensive and sensitive to the expertise of designers. Existing methods learn to disentangle style and content elements by developing a universal style representation for each font style. However, this approach limits the model in representing diverse local styles, because it is unsuitable for complicated letter systems, for example, Chinese, whose characters consist of a varying number of components (often called "radical") -- with a highly complex structure. In this paper, we p…

Handwriting of Chinese has long been an important skill in East Asia. However, automatic generation of handwritten Chinese characters poses a great challenge due to the large number of characters. Various machine learning techniques have been used to recognize Chinese characters, but few works have studied the handwritten Chinese character generation problem, especially with unpaired training data. In this work, we formulate the Chinese handwritten character generation as a problem that learns a mapping from an existing printed font to a personalized handwritten style. We further propose Dense…
Generating a new font library is a very labor-intensive and time-consuming job for glyph-rich scripts. Few-shot font generation is thus required, as it requires only a few glyph references without fine-tuning during test. Existing methods follow the style-content disentanglement paradigm and expect novel fonts to be produced by combining the style codes of the reference glyphs and the content representations of the source. However, these few-shot font generation methods either fail to capture content-independent style representations, or employ localized component-wise style representations, w…
In this paper, we propose a new network architecture for Chinese typography transformation based on deep learning. The architecture consists of two sub-networks: (1)a fully convolutional network(FCN) aiming at transferring specified typography style to another in condition of preserving structure information; (2)an adversarial network aiming at generating more realistic strokes in some details. Unlike models proposed before 2012 relying on the complex segmentation of Chinese components or strokes, our model treats every Chinese character as an inseparable image, so pre-processing or post-prepr…
