Diamond is used extensively as a component in high energy density experiments, but existing equation of state (EOS) models do not capture its observed response to dynamic loading. In particular, in contrast with first principles theoretical EOS models, no solid-solid phase changes have been detected, and no general-purpose EOS models match the measured ambient isotherm. We have performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the diamond phase to ~10TPa, well beyond its predicted range of thermodynamic stability, and used these results as the basis of a Mie-Greuneisen EOS. We also performed DFT calculations of the elastic moduli, and calibrated an algebraic elasticity model for use in simulations. We then estimated the flow stress of diamond by comparison with the stress-density relation measured experimentally in ramp-loading experiments. The resulting constitutive model allows us to place a constraint on the Taylor-Quinney factor (the fraction of plastic work converted to heat) from the observation that diamond does not melt on ramp compression.
Ramp compression experiments characterize high-pressure states of matter at temperatures well below those present in shock compression. However, because temperature is typically not directly measured during ramp compression, it is uncertain how much heating occurs under these shock-free conditions. Here, we performed a series of ab initio simulations on carbon in order to match the density-stress measurements of Smith et al. [Smith, et al., Nature 511, 330 (2014)]. We considered isotropically as well as uniaxially compressed solid carbon in the diamond and BC8 phases, with and without defects,…
We derive expressions for shock formation based on the local curvature of the flow characteristics during dynamic compression. Given a specific ramp adiabat, calculated for instance from the equation of state for a substance, the ideal nonlinear shape for an applied ramp loading history can be determined. We discuss the region affected by lateral release, which can be presented in compact form for the ideal loading history. Example calculations are given for representative metals and plastic ablators. Continuum dynamics (hydrocode) simulations were in good agreement with the algebraic forms. E…
A general formulation was developed to represent material models for applications in dynamic loading. Numerical methods were devised to calculate response to shock and ramp compression, and ramp decompression, generalizing previous solutions for scalar equations of state. The numerical methods were found to be flexible and robust, and matched analytic results to a high accuracy. The basic ramp and shock solution methods were coupled to solve for composite deformation paths, such as shock-induced impacts, and shock interactions with a planar interface between different materials. These calculat…
In this study, an analytical solution is presented for thermo-electro-elastic analysis of piezoelectric semi-infinite bodies. For this purpose, governing equations are derived for a transversely isotropic piezoelectric material under axisymmetric thermo-electro-mechanical loading condition. A general closed form analytical solution is presented for the complementary and particular parts of the components of displacement vector and also electric potential function. Then, boundary conditions are imposed and in that case an explicit solution is obtained for piezoelectric semi-infinite bodies. Res…
In the canonical ramp compression experiment, a smoothly-increasing load is applied to the surface of the sample, and the particle velocity history is measured at two or more different distances into the sample, at interfaces where the surface of the sample can be probed. The velocity histories are used to deduce a stress-density relation, usually using iterative Lagrangian analysis to account for the perturbing effect of the impedance mismatch at the interface. In that technique, a stress- density relation is assumed in order to correct for the perturbation, and is adjusted until it becomes c…
Phase transition of iron, as a prototype of martensite phase transition under dynamic loadings, exhibits huge diverges in its TP among experiments with different pressure medium and loading rates, even in the same initial samples. Great achievements are made in understanding strain or stress dependence of the TP under dynamic loadings. However, present understandings on the strain rate dependence of the TP are far from clear, even a virgin for extreme high strain rates. In this work, large scale NEMD simulations are conducted to study the effects of strain rates on the phase transition of iron…
Carbon at extreme conditions is the focus of intensive scientific inquiry due to its importance for applications in inertial confinement fusion experiments and for understanding the interior structure of carbon-rich exoplanets. The extreme metastability of diamond at very high pressures has been discovered in recent dynamic compression experiments. This work addresses an important question about the existence of other competitive metastable carbon phases that might be observed in shock experiments. It was found that diamond polytypes, carbon crystals with mixed cubic and hexagonal diamond stac…
We report results of quantum efficiency (QE) measurements carried out on a 150 nm thick nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond terminated with hydrogen; abbreviated as (N)UNCD:H. (N)UNCD:H demonstrated a QE of $\sim$10$^{-3}$ ($\sim$0.1%) at 254 nm. Moreover, (N)UNCD:H was sensitive in visible light with a QE of $\sim$5$\times$10$^{-8}$ at 405 nm and $\sim$5$\times$10$^{-9}$ at 436 nm. After growth and prior to QE measurements, samples were exposed to air for about 2 hours for transfer and loading. Such design takes advantage of a key combination: 1) H-termination inducing negative…
Given the unique optical properties of LiF, it is often used as an observation window in high-temperature and pressure experiments; and, hence, estimates of its transmission properties are necessary to interpret observations. Since direct measurements of the thermal conductivity of LiF at the appropriate conditions are difficult, we resort to molecular simulation methods. Using the Belonoshko et al. (2000) empirical potential validated against ab initio phonon density of states, we estimate the thermal conductivity of LiF at high temperatures (1000-4000K) and pressures (100-400 GPa) with the G…

The first in situ quantitative synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) study of plastic strain-induced phase transformation (PT) has been performed on $α-ω$ PT in ultra-pure, strongly plastically predeformed Zr as an example, under different compression-shear pathways in rotational diamond anvil cell (RDAC). Radial distributions of pressure in each phase and in the mixture, and concentration of $ω$-Zr, all averaged over the sample thickness, as well as thickness profile were measured. The minimum pressure for the strain-induced $α-ω$ PT, $p^d_{\varepsilon}$=1.2 GPa, is smaller than under hydrostat…
We report microscale friction experiments for diamond/metal and diamond/silica contacts under gigapascal contact pressures. Using a new nanoprobe technique which has sufficient dynamic range of force and stiffness, we demonstrate the processes involved in the transition from purely interface sliding at the nanoscale to the situation where at least one of the sliding bodies undergoes some plastic deformation. For sliding of micrometer-scale diamond spherical tips on metallic substrates, additional local plastic yielding of the substrate resulting from tangential tractions causes the tip to sink…
Ever since its publication, the Griffith theory is the most widely used criterion for estimating the ideal strength and fracture strength of materials depending on whether the materials contain cracks or not. A Griffith strength limit of ~E/9 is the upper bound for ideal strengths of materials. With the improved quality of fabricated samples and the power of computational modeling, people have recently reported the possibility of exceeding the ideal strength predicted by the Griffith theory. In this study, a new strength criterion was established based on the stable analysis of thermodynamical…
We present results from ramp compression experiments on high-purity Zr that show the $α\rightarrow ω$, $ω\rightarrow β$, as well as reverse $β\rightarrow ω$ phase transitions. Simulations with a multi-phase equation of state and phenomenological kinetic model match the experimental wave profiles well. While the dynamic $α\rightarrow ω$ transition occurs $\sim 9$ GPa above the equilibrium phase boundary, the $ω\rightarrow β$ transition occurs within 0.9~GPa of equilibrium. We estimate that the dynamic compression path intersects the equilibrium $ω- β$ line at $P= 29.2$ GPa, and $T = 490$ K. The…
The pressure-induced phase transition of bismuth telluride, Bi2Te3, has been studied by synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements at room temperature using a diamond-anvil cell (DAC) with loading pressures up to 29.8 GPa. We found a high-pressure body-centered cubic (bcc) phase in Bi2Te3 at 25.2 GPa, which is denoted as phase IV, and this phase apperars above 14.5 GPa. Upon releasing the pressure from 29.8 GPa, the diffraction pattern changes with pressure hysteresis. The original rhombohedral phase is recovered at 2.43 GPa. The bcc structure can explain the phase IV peaks. We assumed that th…
Precipitate-matrix interactions govern the mechanical behavior of precipitate strengthened Al-based alloys. These alloys find a wide range of applications ranging from aerospace to automobile and naval industries due to their low cost and high strength to weight ratio. Structures made from Al-based alloys undergo complex loading conditions such as high strain rate impact, which involves high pressures. Here we use diamond anvil cells to study the behavior of Al-based Al7075 alloy under quasi-hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic pressure up to ~53 GPa. In situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and pre- and po…
