In this paper, we study $λϕ^4$ scalar field theory defined on the unramified extension of p-adic numbers ${\mathbb Q}_{p^n}$. For different ``space-time'' dimensions $n$, we compute one-loop quantum corrections to the effective potential. Surprisingly, despite the unusual properties of non-Archimedean geometry, the Coleman-Weinberg potential of p-adic field theory has a structure very similar to that of its real cousin. We also study two formal limits of the effective potential, $p \rightarrow 1$ and $p \rightarrow \infty$. We show that the $p\rightarrow 1$ limit allows to reconstruct the canonical result for real field theory from the p-adic effective potential and provide an explanation of this fact. On the other hand, in the $p\rightarrow\infty$ limit, the theory exhibits very peculiar behavior with emerging logarithmic terms in the effective potential, which has no analog in real theories.
In this work we show that homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions inhibit the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism for spontaneous symmetry breaking in the scalar electrodynamics if the length of the finite region is small enough ($a = e^{2}M^{-1}_ϕ$, where $M_ϕ$ is the mass of the scalar field generated by the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism)
We rederive non-perturbatively the Coleman-Weinberg expression for the effective potential for massless scalar QED. Our result is not restricted to small values of the coupling constants. This shows that the Coleman- Weinberg result can be established beyond the range of validity of perturbation theory. Also, we derive it in a manifestly renormalization group invariant way. It is shown that with the derivation given no Landau ghost singularity arises. The finite temperature case is discussed. Pacs number: 11.10.Ef,11.10.Gh.
We explore the Coleman-Weinberg phase transition in regions outside the validity of perturbation theory. For this purpose we study a Euclidean field theory with two scalars and discrete symmetry in four dimensions. The phase diagram is established by a numerical solution of a suitable truncation of exact non-perturbative flow equations. We find regions in parameter space where the phase transition (in dependence on the mass term) is of the second or the first order, separated by a triple point. Our quantitative results for the first order phase transition compare well to the standard perturbat…
Using the superfield formalism, we study the dynamical breaking of gauge symmetry in the N=1 three-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons model, coupled to a complex scalar superfield with a quartic self-coupling. This is an analogue of the conformally invariant Coleman-Weinberg model in four spacetime dimensions. We show that a mass for the gauge and matter superfields are dynamically generated after two-loop corrections to the effective superpotential. We also discuss the N=2 extension of our work, showing that the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism in such model is not feasible, because it is inco…
The gauge-dependence of the one loop Coleman-Weinberg effective potential in scalar electrodynamics is resolved using a gauge-free approach not requiring any gauge-fixing of quantum fluctuations of the photon degrees of freedom. This leads to a unique dynamical ratio at one loop of the Higgs mass to the photon mass. We compare our approach and results with those obtained in geometric framework of DeWitt and Vilkovisky, which maintains invariance under field redefinitions as well as invariance under background gauge transformations, but {\it requires}, in contrast to our approach, gauge fixing …
The Higgs mechanism may be a quantum phenomenon, i.e., a Coleman-Weinberg potential generated by the explicit breaking of scale symmetry in Feynman loops. We review the relationship of scale symmetry, trace anomalies, and emphasize the role of the renormalization group in determining Coleman- Weinberg potentials. We propose a simple phenomenological model with "maximal visibility" at the LHC containing a "dormant" Higgs doublet (no VEV, coupled to standard model gauge interactions $SU(2)\times U(1)$) with a mass of $\sim 380$ GeV. We discuss the LHC phenomenology and UV challenges of such a mo…
A quasi two-dimensional non-relativistic four-Fermi theory is studied at finite temperatures in the next-to-leading order approximation using the Coleman-Weinberg effective potential. The appearance of an imaginary part to the one-loop correction is discussed in the context of condensed matter theory where it is referred to as the Thouless criterion for superconductivity. By reference to the appropriate modified effective potential one may revise the Thouless criterion to obtain a critical temperature in next-to-leading order that, unlike the mean-field temperature, tends to zero in the two-di…
The low-energy theory on the world volume of parallel static D3-branes of type 0 strings is the Yang-Mills theory with six scalar fields in the adjoint representation. One-loop corrections in this theory induce Coleman-Weinberg effective potential, which can be interpreted as an interaction energy of D3-branes. The potential is repulsive at short distances and attractive at large ones. In the equilibrium, a large number of D3-branes forms a spherical shell with the radius proportional to the characteristic energy scale of the world-volume theory.
Revised and reduced the size of the text. Removed figure 2 in previous text. So, old figure 3 and 4 become new figure 2 and 3, respectively. Added figure 4 for first order phase transition observation in the strong coupling region. Postscript files for the figures are available upon request. To be published in Phys. Lett. B.
We study $SU(8)$ symmetry breaking induced by minimizing the Coleman-Weinberg effective potential for a third rank antisymmetric tensor scalar field in the 56 representation. Instead of breaking $SU(8) \supset SU(3) \times SU(5)$, we find that the stable minimum of the potential breaks the original symmetry according to $SU(8) \supset SU(3) \times Sp(4)$. Using both numerical and analytical methods, we present results for the potential minimum, the corresponding Goldstone boson structure and BEH mechanism, and the group-theoretic classification of the residual states after symmetry breaking.
We revisit the small field Coleman-Weinberg (CW) inflation, which has the following two problems. First, the smallness of the slow roll parameter $ε$ requires the inflation scale to be very low. Second, the spectral index $n_s \approx1+2 η$ tends to become smaller compared to the observed value. In this letter, we consider two possible effects on the dynamics of inflation: radiatively generated non-minimal coupling to gravity $ξϕ^2 {\cal R}$ and condensation of fermions coupled to the inflaton as $ϕ\barψψ$. We show that the fermion condenate can solve the above problems.
We extend the Coleman--Weinberg inflationary model where a scalar field $ϕ$ is non-minimally coupled to gravity with the addition of the $R^2$ term. We express the theory in terms of two scalar fields and going to the Einstein frame we employ the Gildener--Weinberg formalism, compute the one-loop effective potential and essentially reduce the problem to the case of single-field inflation. It turns out that there is only one free parameter, namely, the mixing angle between the scalars. For a wide range of this angle, we compute the inflationary observables which are in agreement with the latest…
We revisit the problem of the gauge invariance in the Coleman-Weinberg model in which a $U(1)$ gauge symmetry is driven spontaneously broken by radiative corrections. It was noticed in previous work that masses in this model are not gauge invariant at one-loop order. In our analysis, we use the dressed propagators of scalars which include a resummation of the one-loop self-energy correction to the tree-level propagator. We calculate the one-loop self-energy correction to the vector meson using these dressed propagators. We find that the pole mass of the vector meson calculated using the dresse…
We revisit a single field inflationary model based on Coleman-Weinberg potentials. We show that in small field Coleman-Weinberg inflation, the observed amplitude of perturbations needs an extremely small quartic coupling of the inflaton, which might be a signature of radiative origin. However, the spectral index obtained in a standard cosmological scenario turns out to be outside the 2 sigma region of the Planck data. When a non-standard cosmological framework is invoked, such as brane-world cosmology in the Randall-Sundrum model, the spectral index can be made consistent with Planck data with…
Cosmological Coleman-Weinberg potentials are induced when normal matter is coupled to the inflaton. It has long been known that the corrections from bosonic fields are positive whereas those from fermionic fields are negative. In flat space both take the form $\pm φ^4 \ln(φ)$, and they can be made to cancel by appropriately choosing the coupling constants. In an expanding universe the bosonic and fermionic results no longer take the same form, although their large field limits do. We choose the coupling constants so that the large field limits cancel, and then follow the deviations which resul…
Coleman-Weinberg (CW) phenomena for the case of gravitons minimally coupled to massless scalar field is studied. The one loop effect completely vanishes if there is no self interaction term present in the matter sector. The one loop effective potential is shown to develop an instability in the form of acquiring an imaginary part, which can be traced to the tachyonic pole in the graviton propagator. The finite temperature counterpart of this CW potential is computed to study the behaviour of the potential in the high and low temperature regimes with respect to the typical energy scale of the th…
We study viable small-field Coleman-Weinberg (CW) inflation models with the help of non-minimal coupling to gravity. The simplest small-field CW inflation model (with a low-scale potential minimum) is incompatible with the cosmological constraint on the scalar spectral index. However, there are possibilities to make the model realistic. First, we revisit the CW inflation model supplemented with a linear potential term. We next consider the CW inflation model with a logarithmic non-minimal coupling and illustrate that the model can open a new viable parameter space that includes the model with …
We study properties of Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen (ANO) strings with the Coleman-Weinberg (CW) potential, which we call CW-ANO strings. While the scale-invariant scalar potential has a topologically trivial vacuum admitting no strings at the classical level, quantum correction allows topologically nontrivial vacua and stable string solutions. We find that the system of the CW potential exhibits significant difference from that of the conventional Abelian-Higgs model with the quadratic-quartic potential. While a single-winding string is qualitatively similar in both systems, and the static interv…

We show that both the Planck and electroweak mass scales can be generated from conformal gravity via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism of dimensional transmutation. At the first step, the Planck scale is generated via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism in the sector of conformal gravity, which means that radiative corrections associated with gravitons induce spontaneous symmetry breakdown of a local conformal symmetry. At the second step, the vacuum expectation value of a scalar field is transmitted to the sector of the standard model via a potential involving the conformally invariant part and the c…
We continue our study of Coleman-Weinberg symmetry breaking induced by a third rank antisymmetric tensor scalar, in the context of the $SU(8)$ model we proposed earlier. We focus in this paper on qualitative features that will determine whether the model can make contact with the observed particle spectrum. We discuss the mechanism for giving the spin $\frac{3}{2}$ field a mass by the BEH mechanism, and analyze the remaining massless spin $\frac{1}{2}$ fermions, the global chiral symmetries, and the running couplings after symmetry breaking. We note that the smallest gluon mass matrix eigenval…
We study non-minimal Coleman-Weinberg inflation in the Palatini formulation of gravity in the presence of an $R^2$ term. The Planck scale is dynamically generated by the vacuum expectation value of the inflaton via its non-minimal coupling to the curvature scalar $R$. We show that the addition of the $R^2$ term in Palatini gravity makes non-minimal Coleman-Weinberg inflation again compatible with observational data.
The effective potential V in a massless self-coupled scalar theory and massless scalar electrodynamics is considered. Both the MS and Coleman-Weinberg renormalization schemes are examined. The renormalization scheme dependence of V is determined. Upon summing all of the logarithmic contributions to V, it is shown that the implicit and explicit dependence on the renormalization scale μ cancels. In addition, if there is spontaneous symmetry breaking, then the dependence on the background field Φ cancels, leaving V flat but with non-perturbative contributions. The quartic scalar coupling in the C…
An alternative approach to scalar quantum electrodynamics has been proposed where the usual gauge redundancy of the theory do not manifest. The gauge-dependence of Coleman- Weinberg effective potential is resolved using gauge-free approach leading to a unique scalar to vector mass ratio. The gauge-free result is compared with the one obtained in Vilkovisky-DeWitt geometric framework and it is shown that it differs from the standard result reported earlier. It is also shown that for reparametrization invariance of the Coleman-Weinberg potential one must combine the Vilkovisky-DeWitt method with…
In this paper, we derive the standard model with classical conformal invariance from the Yang--Mills--Higgs model in noncommutative geometry (NCG). In the ordinary context of the NCG, the {\it distance matrix} $M_{nm}$ which corresponds to the vacuum expectation value of Higgs fields is taken to be finite. However, since $M_{nm}$ is arbitrary in this formulation, we can take all $M_{nm}$ to be zero. In the original composite scheme, the Higgs field itself vanishes with the condition $M_{nm} = 0$. Then, we adopt the elemental scheme, in which the gauge and the Higgs bosons are regarded as eleme…
We show that the Planck mass scale can be generated from conformal gravity in the Weyl conformal geometry via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism of dimensional transmutation where quantum corrections stemming from the gravitational field and the Weyl gauge field trigger the symmetry breakdown of a local Weyl symmetry. It is also shown that the vacuum expectation value of a scalar field is transmitted to a sector of the standard model through a potential involving the scale invariant part and the contribution from the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, thereby generating the electroweak scale.
The Maxwell-Chern-Simons gauge theory with charged scalar fields is analyzed at two loop level. The effective potential for the scalar fields is derived in the closed form, and studied both analytically and numerically. It is shown that the U(1) symmetry is spontaneously broken in the massless scalar theory. Dimensional transmutation takes place in the Coleman-Weinberg limit in which the Maxwell term vanishes. We point out the subtlety in defining the pure Chern-Simons scalar electrodynamics and show that the Coleman-Weinberg limit must be taken after renormalization. Renormalization group ana…
In this work it is studied the spontaneous breaking of superconformal and gauge invariances in the Abelian N=1,2 three-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theories in a large N limit. It is computed the Kählerian effective superpotential at subleading order and shown that the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism is the responsible for the dynamical generation of a mass scale in the N=1 model. This effect appears due to two-loop diagrams that are logarithmic divergent. In particular, the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism fails when we lift the N=1 to N=2 Supersymmetric Chern-Simons-Matter model, like…
We consider a coupling of dilaton gravity to the classically scale-invariant B-L extended standard model which has been recently proposed as a phenomenologically viable model realizing the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism of breakdown of the electroweak symmetry. It is shown in the present model that without recourse to the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, the B-L gauge symmetry is broken in the process of spontaneous symmetry breakdown of scale invariance at the tree level and as a result the B-L gauge field becomes massive via the Higgs mechanism. Since the dimensionful parameter is only the Planck mas…
We investigate thermal one-loop effective potentials in multi-flavor models with chemical potentials. We study four-dimensional models in which each flavor have different global U(1) charges. Accordingly they have different chemical potentials. We call these "non-uniform chemical potentials," which are organized into a diagonal matrix μ. The mass matrix at a vacuum does not commute with μ. We find that the effective potential is divided into three parts. The first part is the Coleman-Weinberg potential. The UV divergence resides only in this part. The second is the correction to the Coleman-We…
We consider a coupling of conformal gravity to the classically scale-invariant B-L extended standard model which has been recently proposed as a phenomenologically viable model realizing the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism of breakdown of the electro-weak symmetry. As in a globally scale-invariant dilaton gravity, it is also shown in a locally scale-invariant conformal gravity that without recourse to the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, the B-L gauge symmetry is broken in the process of spontaneous symmetry breakdown of the local scale invariance (Weyl invariance) at the tree level and as a result the …
We have considered the quantum behavior of a conformally induced gravity in the minimal Riemann-Cartan space. The regularized one-loop effective potential considering the quantum fluctuations of the dilaton and the torsion fields in the Coleman-Weinberg sector gives a sensible phase transition for an inflationary phase in De Sitter space. For this effective potential, we have analyzed the semi-classical equation of motion of the dilaton field in the slow-rolling regime.
