Understanding many processes, e.g. fusion experiments, planetary interiors and dwarf stars, depends strongly on microscopic physics modeling of warm dense matter (WDM) and hot dense plasma. This complex state of matter consists of a transient mixture of degenerate and nearly-free electrons, molecules, and ions. This regime challenges both experiment and analytical modeling, necessitating predictive \emph{ab initio} atomistic computation, typically based on quantum mechanical Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory (KS-DFT). However, cubic computational scaling with temperature and system size prohibits the use of DFT through much of the WDM regime. A recently-developed stochastic approach to KS-DFT can be used at high temperatures, with the exact same accuracy as the deterministic approach, but the stochastic error can converge slowly and it remains expensive for intermediate temperatures (<50 eV). We have developed a universal mixed stochastic-deterministic algorithm for DFT at any temperature. This approach leverages the physics of KS-DFT to seamlessly integrate the best aspects of these different approaches. We demonstrate that this method significantly accelerated self-consistent field calculations for temperatures from 3 to 50 eV, while producing stable molecular dynamics and accurate diffusion coefficients.
Accurately modeling dense plasmas over wide ranging conditions of pressure and temperature is a grand challenge critically important to our understanding of stellar and planetary physics as well as inertial confinement fusion. In this work, we employ Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) molecular dynamics (MD) to compute the properties of carbon at warm and hot dense matter conditions in the vicinity of the principal Hugoniot. In particular, we calculate the equation of state (EOS), Hugoniot, pair distribution functions, and diffusion coefficients for carbon at densities spanning 8 g/cm$^…
We resolve a fundamental issue associated with the conventional Kohn-Sham formulation of real-time time-dependent density functional theory. We show that unphysical multielectron excitations, generated during time propagation of the Kohn-Sham equations due to fixation of the total number of Kohn-Sham orbitals and their occupations, result in incorrect electron density and, therefore, wrong predictions of physical properties. A new formulation is proposed in that the number of Kohn-Sham orbitals and their occupations are updated on the fly, the unphysical multielectron excitations are removed, …
We present a method to discretize the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian matrix in the pseudopotential framework by a small set of basis functions automatically contracted from a uniform basis set such as planewaves. Each basis function is localized around an element, which is a small part of the global domain containing multiple atoms. We demonstrate that the resulting basis set achieves meV accuracy for 3D densely packed systems with a small number of basis functions per atom. The procedure is applicable to insulating and metallic systems.
In this work we introduce a new semi-implicit second order correction scheme to the kinetic Kohn-Sham lattice model. The new approach is validated by performing realistic exchange-correlation energy calculations of atoms and dimers of the first two rows of the periodic table finding good agreement with the expected values. Additionally we simulate the ethane molecule where we recover the bond lengths and compare the results with standard methods. Finally, we discuss the current applicability of pseudopotentials within the lattice kinetic Kohn-Sham approach.
The standard way to calculate the Kohn-Sham orbitals utilizes an approximation of the potential. The approximation consists in a projection of the potential into a finite subspace of basis functions. The orbitals, calculated with the projected potential, are used to evaluate the kinetic part of the total energy, but the true potential is used to evaluate the interaction energy with the electron density. Consequently, the Kohn-Sham total-energy expression loses its stationary behaviour as a functional of the potential. It will be discussed that this stationarity is important for the calculation…
We present a tensor-structured algorithm for efficient large-scale DFT calculations by constructing a Tucker tensor basis that is adapted to the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian and localized in real-space. The proposed approach uses an additive separable approximation to the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian and an $L_1$ localization technique to generate the 1-D localized functions that constitute the Tucker tensor basis. Numerical results show that the resulting Tucker tensor basis exhibits exponential convergence in the ground-state energy with increasing Tucker rank. Further, the proposed tensor-structured algo…
We derive the expressions for configurational forces in Kohn-Sham density functional theory, which correspond to the generalized variational force computed as the derivative of the Kohn-Sham energy functional with respect to the position of a material point $\textbf{x}$. These configurational forces that result from the inner variations of the Kohn-Sham energy functional provide a unified framework to compute atomic forces as well as stress tensor for geometry optimization. Importantly, owing to the variational nature of the formulation, these configurational forces inherently account for the …
Kohn-Sham inversion, that is, the finding of the exact Kohn-Sham potential for a given density, is difficult in localized basis sets. We study the precision and reliability of several inversion schemes, finding estimates of density-driven errors at a useful level of accuracy. In typical cases of substantial density-driven errors, HF-DFT is almost as accurate as DFT evaluated on CCSD(T) densities. A simple approximation in practical HF-DFT also makes errors much smaller than the density-driven errors being calculated. Two paradigm examples, stretched NaCl and the HO$\cdot$Cl$^-$ radical, illust…
We present a real-space computational method called treecode-accelerated Green Iteration (TAGI) for all-electron Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory. TAGI is based on a reformulation of the Kohn-Sham equations in which the eigenvalue problem in differential form is converted into a fixed-point problem in integral form by convolution with the modified Helmholtz Green's function. In each self-consistent field (SCF) iteration, the fixed-points are computed by Green Iteration, where the discrete convolution sums are efficiently evaluated by a GPU-accelerated barycentric Lagrange treecode. Other te…
We present the Tucker tensor DFT (TTDFT) code which uses a tensor-structured algorithm with graphic processing unit (GPU) acceleration for conducting ground-state DFT calculations on large-scale systems. The Tucker tensor DFT algorithm uses a localized Tucker tensor basis computed from an additive separable approximation to the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian. The discrete Kohn-Sham problem is solved using Chebyshev filtering subspace iteration method that relies on matrix-matrix multiplications of a sparse symmetric Hamiltonian matrix and a dense wavefunction matrix, expressed in the localized Tucker t…
We present a spectrum-splitting approach to conduct all-electron Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) calculations by employing Fermi-operator expansion of the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian. The proposed approach splits the subspace containing the occupied eigenspace into a core-subspace, spanned by the core eigenfunctions, and its complement, the valence-subspace, and thereby enables an efficient computation of the Fermi-operator expansion by reducing the expansion to the valence-subspace projected Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian. The key ideas used in our approach are: (i) employ Chebyshev filtering to c…
The rectangular collocation approach makes it possible to solve the Schrödinger equation with basis functions that do not have amplitude in all regions in which wavefunctions have significant amplitude. Collocation points can be restricted to a small region of space. As no integrals are computed, there are no problems due to discontinuities in the potential, and there is no need to use integrable basis functions. In this paper, we show, for the Kohn-Sham equation, that machine learning can be used to drastically reduce the size of the collocation point set. This is demonstrated by solving the …
To obtain convergent numerical approximations without using any orthogonalization operations is of great importance in electronic structure calculations. In this paper, we propose and analyze a class of iteration schemes for the discretized Kohn- Sham Density Functional Theory model, with which the iterative approximations are guaranteed to converge to the Kohn-Sham orbitals exponentially without any orthogonalization as long as the initial orbitals are orthogonal and the time step sizes are given properly. In addition, we present a feasible and efficient approach to get suitable time step siz…
A Kohn-Sham (KS) inversion determines a KS potential and orbitals corresponding to a given electron density, a procedure that has applications in developing and evaluating functionals used in density functional theory. Despite the utility of KS inversions, application of these methods among the research community is disproportionately small. We implement the KS inversion methods of Zhao-Morrison-Parr and Wu-Yang in a framework that simplifies analysis and conversion of the resulting potential in real-space. Fully documented Python scripts integrate with PySCF, a popular electronic structure pr…
Using finite basis sets, it is shown how to construct a local Hamiltonian, such that one of its infinitely many degenerate eigenfunctions is the ground state full configuration interaction (FCI) wave function in that basis set. Formally, the local potential of this Hamiltonian is the optimized effective potential and the exact Kohn-Sham potential at the same time, because the FCI wave function yields the exact ground-state density and energy. It is not the aim of this paper to provide a new algorithm for obtaining FCI wave functions. A new potential is the goal.
Given the time-evolution of an electron charge density, the local potential in Kohn-Sham time-dependent density functional theory (KS-TDDFT) can be modeled as a sum of instantaneous and dynamic contributions by assuming a certain form of the time-dependent Kohn-Sham (TD-KS) orbitals. The instantaneous part is obtained numerically using methods from ground-state density functional theory (DFT) and the dynamic part is expressed in terms of a velocity potential that depends on the electron current density. The suggested form of the TD-KS orbitals satisfies several known constraints (orthonormalit…
We address the problem of bounding rigorously the errors in the numerical solution of the Kohn-Sham equations due to (i) the finiteness of the basis set, (ii) the convergence thresholds in iterative procedures, (iii) the propagation of rounding errors in floating-point arithmetic. In this contribution, we compute fully-guaranteed bounds on the solution of the non-self-consistent equations in the pseudopotential approximation in a plane-wave basis set. We demonstrate our methodology by providing band structure diagrams of silicon annotated with error bars indicating the combined error.
We incorporate in the Kohn-Sham self consistent equation a trained neural-network projection from the charge density distribution to the Hartree-exchange-correlation potential $n \rightarrow V_{\rm Hxc}$ for possible numerical approach to the exact Kohn-Sham scheme. The potential trained through a newly developed scheme enables us to evaluate the total energy without explicitly treating the formula of the exchange-correlation energy. With a case study of a simple model we show that the well-trained neural-network $V_{\rm Hxc}$ achieves accuracy for the charge density and total energy out of th…

Including prior knowledge is important for effective machine learning models in physics, and is usually achieved by explicitly adding loss terms or constraints on model architectures. Prior knowledge embedded in the physics computation itself rarely draws attention. We show that solving the Kohn-Sham equations when training neural networks for the exchange-correlation functional provides an implicit regularization that greatly improves generalization. Two separations suffice for learning the entire one-dimensional H$_2$ dissociation curve within chemical accuracy, including the strongly correl…
In a recent Letter, Baer et al. present a stochastic method for Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations. Their convergence criterion is the self-averaging total energy per electron, which requires a number of statistical samples that decreases with system size and enables a sublinear-scaling computational cost. However, the electron density, atomic forces, orbital energies, and many other physical quantities do not self-average, and this procedure causes their statistical errors to grow with system size. Convergence of non-self-averaging quantities requires that the number of samples …
KSSOLV (Kohn-Sham Solver) is a MATLAB toolbox for performing Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) calculations with a plane-wave basis set. KSSOLV 2.0 preserves the design features of the original KSSOLV software to allow users and developers to easily set up a problem and perform ground-state calculations as well as to prototype and test new algorithms. Furthermore, it includes new functionalities such as new iterative diagonalization algorithms, k-point sampling for electron band structures, geometry optimization and advanced algorithms for performing DFT calculations with local, semi-l…
Solving the electronic structure from a generalized or standard eigenproblem is often the bottleneck in large scale calculations based on Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. This problem must be addressed by essentially all current electronic structure codes, based on similar matrix expressions, and by high-performance computation. We here present a unified software interface, ELSI, to access different strategies that address the Kohn-Sham eigenvalue problem. Currently supported algorithms include the dense generalized eigensolver library ELPA, the orbital minimization method implemented in l…
We propose a way to improve energy density functionals (EDFs) in the density functional theory based on the combination of the inverse Kohn--Sham method and the density functional perturbation theory. Difference between the known EDF and the exact one is treated as the first-order perturbation. As benchmark calculations, we reproduce the theoretical exchange and correlation functionals in the local density approximation. Systems of noble-gas atoms are used for benchmark calculations, and the ground-state energies and densities, as well as the functionals, are reproduced with good accuracies.
We present a broadly-applicable, physically-motivated first-principles approach to determining the fundamental gap of finite systems. The approach is based on using a range-separated hybrid functional within the generalized Kohn-Sham approach to density functional theory. Its key element is the choice of a range-separation parameter such that Koopmans' theorem for both the neutral and anionic is obeyed as closely as possible. We demonstrate the validity, accuracy, and advantages of this approach on first, second, and third row atoms, the oligoacene family of molecules, and a set of hydrogen-pa…
Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations using conventional diagonalization based methods become increasingly expensive as temperature increases due to the need to compute increasing numbers of partially occupied states. We present a density matrix based method for Kohn-Sham calculations at high temperature that eliminates the need for diagonalization entirely, thus reducing the cost of such calculations significantly. Specifically, we develop real-space expressions for the electron density, electronic free energy, Hellmann-Feynman forces, and Hellmann-Feynman stress tensor in terms of…
The Kohn-Sham (KS) equations determine, in a self-consistent way, the particle density of an interacting fermion system at thermal equilibrium. We consider a situation when the KS equations are known to have a unique solution at high temperatures and this solution is a uniform particle density. We show that, at zero temperature, there are stable solutions that are not uniform. We provide the general principles behind this phenomenon, namely the conditions when it can be observed and how to construct these non-uniform solutions. Two concrete examples are provided, including fermions on the sphe…
We present an accurate and efficient formulation of the stress tensor for real-space Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Specifically, while employing a local formulation of the electrostatics, we derive a linear-scaling expression for the stress tensor that is applicable to simulations with unit cells of arbitrary symmetry, semilocal exchange-correlation functionals, and Brillouin zone integration. In particular, we rewrite the contributions arising from the self energy and the nonlocal pseudopotential energy to make them amenable to the real-space finite-difference discre…
The exact static and time-dependent Kohn-Sham (KS) exchange-correlation (xc) potential is extremely challenging to approximate as it is a local multiplicative potential that depends on the electron density everywhere in the system. The KS approach can be generalised by allowing part of the potential to be spatially nonlocal. We take this nonlocal part to be that of unrestricted Hartree-Fock theory. The additional local correlation potential in principle ensures that the single-particle density exactly equals the many-body density. In our case, the local correlation potential is predominantly n…
We examine various integration schemes for the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations. Contrary to the time-dependent Schrödinger's equation, this set of equations is non-linear, due to the dependence of the Hamiltonian on the electronic density. We discuss some of their exact properties, and in particular their symplectic structure. Four different families of propagators are considered, specifically the linear multistep, Runge-Kutta, exponential Runge-Kutta, and the commutator-free Magnus schemes. These have been chosen because they have been largely ignored in the past for time-dependent electro…
We construct the Kohn--Sham density response function $χ_{0}$ in a previously described basis of the space of orbital products. The calculational complexity of our construction is $O(N^{2}N_ω)$ for a molecule of $N$ atoms and in a spectroscopic window of $N_ω$ frequency points. As a first application, we use $χ_{0}$ to calculate molecular spectra from the Petersilka--Gossmann--Gross equation. With $χ_{0}$ as input, we obtain correct spectra with an extra computational effort that grows also as $O(N^2 N_ω)$ and, therefore, less steeply in $N$ than the $O(N^{3})$ complexity of solving Casida's e…
Starting from the observation that one of the most successful methods for solving the Kohn-Sham equations for periodic systems -- the plane-wave method -- is a spectral method based on eigenfunction expansion, we formulate a spectral method designed towards solving the Kohn-Sham equations for clusters. This allows for efficient calculation of the electronic structure of clusters (and molecules) with high accuracy and systematic convergence properties without the need for any artificial periodicity. The basis functions in this method form a complete orthonormal set and are expressible in terms …
Within exact electron density-functional theory, we investigate Kohn-Sham (KS) potentials, orbital energies, and non-interacting kinetic energies of the fractional ions of Li, C and F. We use quantum Monte Carlo densities as input, which are then fitted, interpolated at non-integer electron numbers $N$, and inverted to produce accurate KS potentials $v_s^N(r)$. We study the dependence of the KS potential on $N$, and in particular we numerically reproduce the theoretically predicted spatially constant discontinuity of $v_s^N(r)$ as $N$ passes through an integer. We further show that, for all th…
A numerical scheme for solving the time-evolution of wave functions under the time dependent Kohn-Sham equation has been developed. Since the effective Hamiltonian depends on the wave functions, the wave functions and the effective Hamiltonian should evolve consistently with each other. For this purpose, a self-consistent loop is required at every time-step for solving the time-evolution numerically, which is computationally expensive. However, in this paper, we develop a different approach expressing a formal solution of the TD-KS equation, and prove that it is possible to solve the TD-KS equ…
We present and test a new approximation for the exchange-correlation (xc) energy of Kohn-Sham density functional theory. It combines exact exchange with a compatible non-local correlation functional. The functional is by construction free of one-electron self-interaction, respects constraints derived from uniform coordinate scaling, and has the correct asymptotic behavior of the xc energy density. It contains one parameter that is not determined ab initio. We investigate whether it is possible to construct a functional that yields accurate binding energies and affords other advantages, specifi…
