We study the time-dependent effect of Markovian readout processes on Majorana qubits whose parity degrees of freedom are converted into the charge of a tunnel-coupled quantum dot. By applying a recently established effective Lindbladian approximation [1-3], we obtain a completely positive and trace preserving Lindblad master equation for the combined dot-qubit dynamics, describing relaxation and decoherence processes beyond the rotating-wave approximation. This approach is applicable to a wide range of weakly coupled environments representing experimentally relevant readout devices. We study in detail the case of thermal decay in the presence of a generic Ohmic bosonic bath, in particular for potential fluctuations in an electromagnetic circuit. In addition, we consider the nonequilibrium measurement environment for a parity readout using a quantum point contact capacitively coupled to the dot charge.
We analyze a readout scheme for Majorana qubits based on dispersive coupling to a resonator. We consider two variants of Majorana qubits: the Majorana transmon and the Majorana box qubit. In both cases, the qubit-resonator interaction can produce sizeable dispersive shifts in the MHz range for reasonable system parameters, allowing for submicrosecond readout with high fidelity. For Majorana transmons, the light-matter interaction used for readout manifestly conserves Majorana parity, which leads to a notion of quantum nondemolition (QND) readout that is stronger than for conventional charge qu…
We propose a quantum non-demolition Majorana qubit readout protocol based on parametricmodulation of a longitudinal interaction between a pair of Majorana bound states and a resonator. The interaction can be modulated through microwave frequency gate-voltage or flux control of a tunable tunnel barrier. The qubit-resonator coupling is quantum non-demolition to exponential accuracy, a property inherited from the topological nature of the Majorana zero modes. The same mechanism as used for single-qubit readout can also be extended to perform multi-qubit measurements and be used to enact long rang…
Schemes for topological quantum computation with Majorana bound states rely heavily on the ability to measure products of Majorana operators projectively. Here, we employ Markovian quantum measurement theory, including the readout device, to analyze such measurements. Specifically, we focus on the readout of Majorana qubits via continuous charge sensing of a tunnel-coupled quantum dot by a quantum point contact. We show that projective measurements of Majorana products $\prod_i\hatγ_i$ can be implemented by continuous charge sensing under quite general circumstances. Essential requirements are…
Solid-state qubits incorporating quantum dots can be read out by gate reflectometry. Here, we theoretically describe physical mechanisms that render such reflectometry-based readout schemes imperfect. We discuss charge qubits, singlet-triplet spin qubits, and Majorana qubits. In our model, we account for readout errors due to slow charge noise, and due to overdriving, when a too strong probe is causing errors. A key result is that for charge and spin qubits, the readout fidelity saturates at large probe strengths, whereas for Majorana qubits, there is an optimal probe strength which provides a…
Reading out Majorana bound states (MBSs) is essential both to verify their non-Abelian property and to realize topological quantum computation. Here, we construct a protocol to measure the parity of two MBSs in a Majorana island coupled to double quantum dot (DQD). The parity information is mapped to the charge state of the DQD through Landau-Zener transition. The operation needed is sweeping the bias of the DQD, which is followed by charge sensing. In the case without fine-tuning, a single run of sweep-and-detection implement a weak measurement of the parity. We find that in general a sequenc…
Majorana qubits offer a promising way to store and manipulate quantum information by encoding it into the state of Majorana zero modes. As the information is stored in a topological property of the system, local noise cannot lead to decoherence. Manipulation of the information is achieved by braiding the zero modes. The measurement, however, is challenging as the information is well hidden and thus inherently hard to access. Here, we discuss a setup for measuring the state of a Majorana qubit by employing standard tools of microwave engineering. The basic physical effect that we employ is the …
Efficient readout of individual electronic spins associated with atom-like impurities in the solid state is essential for applications in quantum information processing and quantum metrology. We demonstrate a new method for efficient spin readout of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. The method is based on conversion of the electronic spin state of the NV to a charge state distribution, followed by single-shot readout of the charge state. Conversion is achieved through a spin-dependent photoionization process in diamond at room temperature. Using NVs in nanofabricated diamond beams, we …
We present a theoretical analysis of a Majorana-based qubit consisting of two topological superconducting islands connected via a Josephson junction. The qubit is operated by electrostatic gates which control the coupling of two of the four Majorana zero modes. At the end of the operation, readout is performed in the charge basis. Even though the operations are not topologically protected, the proposed experiment can potentially shed light on the coherence of the parity degree of freedom in Majorana devices and serve as a first step towards topological Majorana qubits. We discuss in detail the…
We theoretically examine a scheme for projectively reading out the parity state of a pair of Majorana bound states (MBS) using a tunnel coupled quantum dot. The dot is coupled to one end of the topological wire but isolated from any reservoir, and is capacitively coupled to a charge sensor for measurement. The combined parity of the MBS-dot system is conserved and charge transfer between the MBS and dot only occurs through resonant tunnelling. Resonance is controlled by the dot potential through a local gate and by the MBS energy splitting due to the overlap of the MBS pair wavefunctions. The …
Reading out the parity degree of freedom of Majorana bound states is key to demonstrating their nonabelian exchange properties. Here, we present a low-energy model describing localized edge states in a two-arm device. We study parity-to-charge conversion based on coupling the superconductor bound states to a quantum dot whose charge is read out by a sensor. The dynamics of the system, including the readout device, is analyzed in full using a quantum-jump approach. We show how the resulting signal and noise ratio differentiates between local Majorana and Andreev bound states.
We theoretically study a scheme to distinguish the two ground states of a one-dimensional topological superconductor, which could serve as a basis for the readout of Majorana qubits. The scheme is based on parity-to-charge conversion, i.e., the ground-state parity of the superconductor is converted to the charge occupation on a tunnel-coupled auxiliary quantum dot. We describe how certain error mechanisms degrade the quality of the parity-to-charge conversion process. We consider (i) leakage due to a strong readout tunnel pulse, (ii) incomplete charge Rabi oscillations due to slow charge noise…
We demonstrate optical readout of ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy(NV) center spins in a bulk diamond sample via spin-to-charge conversion. A high power 594 nm laser is utilized to selectively ionize these paramagnetic defects in the spin state with a contrast of up to 12%. In comparison with the conventional 520 nm spin readout, spin-to-charge-conversion-based readout provides higher signal-to-noise ratio, with tenfold sensing measurement speedup for millisecond long pulse sequences. This level of performance was achieved for an NV- ionization of only 25%, limited by the ionization and readout l…
Efficient optical readout of a single, solid-state electronic spin at room temperature is a key challenge for nanoscale quantum sensing. Here we apply the technique of spin-to-charge conversion to enhance the optical spin-state readout of a single Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) color center in room temperature diamond, with no degradation in the NV spin coherence time. We demonstrate an order-of-magnitude improvement in spin readout noise per shot and about a factor of five improvement in AC magnetometry sensitivity, compared to the conventional NV spin-state optical readout method. This improvement is…
We propose a topological qubit in which braiding and readout are mediated by the $4π$ Majorana-Josephson effect. The braidonium device consists of three Majorana nanowires that come together to make a tri-junction; in order to control the superconducting phase differences at the tri-junction the nanowires are enclosed in a ring made of a conventional superconductor; and in order to perform initialization/readout one of the nanowires is coupled to a fluxonium qubit through a topological Josephson junction. We analyze how flux-based control and readout protocols can be used to demonstrate braidi…
Single-shot qubit readout typically combines high readout contrast with long-lived readout signals, leading to large signal-to-noise ratios and high readout fidelities. In recent years, it has been demonstrated that both readout contrast and readout signal lifetime, and thus the signal-to-noise ratio, can be enhanced by forcing the qubit state to transition through intermediate states. In this work, we demonstrate that the sub-Poissonian relaxation statistics introduced by intermediate states can reduce the single-shot readout error rate by orders of magnitude even when there is no increase in…
The successful test of non-Abelian statistics not only serves as a milestone in fundamental physics but also provides a quantum gate operation in topological quantum computation. An accurate and efficient readout scheme of a topological qubit is an essential step toward the experimental confirmation of non-Abelian statistics. In the current work, we propose a protocol to read out the quantum state of a Majorana vortex qubit on a topological superconductor island. The protocol consists of four Majorana zero modes trapped in spatially well-separated vortex cores on the two-dimensional surface of…
Nanodiamonds containing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers offer a versatile platform for sensing applications spanning from nanomagnetism to in-vivo monitoring of cellular processes. In many cases, however, weak optical signals and poor contrast demand long acquisition times that prevent the measurement of environmental dynamics. Here, we demonstrate the ability to perform fast, high-contrast optical measurements of charge distributions in ensembles of NV centers in nanodiamonds and use the technique to improve the spin readout signal-to-noise ratio through spin-to-charge conversion. A study of 38…
We study the dynamics and readout of topological qubits encoded by zero-energy Majorana bound states in a topological superconductor. We take into account bosonic modes due to the electromagnetic environment which couple the Majorana manifold to above-gap continuum quasi-particles. This coupling causes the degenerate ground state of the topological superconductor to be dressed in a polaron-like manner by quasi-particle states and bosons, and the system to become gapless. Topological protection and hence full coherence is only maintained if the qubit is operated and read out within the low-ener…
We introduce a scheme for preparation, manipulation, and readout of Majorana zero modes in semiconducting wires with mesoscopic superconducting islands. Our approach synthesizes recent advances in materials growth with tools commonly used in quantum-dot experiments, including gate-control of tunnel barriers and Coulomb effects, charge sensing, and charge pumping. We outline a sequence of milestones interpolating between zero-mode detection and quantum computing that includes (1) detection of fusion rules for non-Abelian anyons using either proximal charge sensors or pumped current; (2) validat…
Majorana fermions hold promise for quantum computation, because their non-Abelian braiding statistics allows for topologically protected operations on quantum information. Topological qubits can be constructed from pairs of well-separated Majoranas in networks of nanowires. The coupling to a superconducting charge qubit in a transmission line resonator (transmon) permits braiding of Majoranas by external variation of magnetic fluxes. We show that readout operations can also be fully flux-controlled, without requiring microscopic control over tunnel couplings. We identify the minimal circuit th…
Quantum-dot based parity-to-charge conversion is a promising method for reading out quantum information encoded nonlocally into pairs of Majorana zero modes. To obtain a sizable parity-to-charge visibility, it is crucial to tune the relative phase of the tunnel couplings between the dot and the Majorana modes appropriately. However, in the presence of multiple quasi-degenerate dot orbitals, it is in general not experimentally feasible to tune all couplings individually. This paper shows that such configurations could make it difficult to avoid a destructive multi-orbital interference effect th…
We demonstrate that non-Abelian rotations within the degenerate groundstate manifold of a set of Majorana fermions can be realized by the addition or removal of single electrons, and propose an implementation using Coulomb blockaded quantum dots. The exchange of electrons generates rotations similar to braiding, though not in real space. Unlike braiding operations, rotations by a continuum of angles are possible, while still being partially robust against perturbations. The quantum dots can also be used for readout of the state of the Majorana system via a charge measurement.
Motivated by recent experimental progress towards the measurement and manipulation of Majorana fermions with superconducting circuits, we propose a device interfacing Majorana fermions with circuit quantum electrodynamics. The proposed circuit acts as a charge parity detector changing the resonance frequency of a superconducting $λ/4$ - resonator conditioned on the parity of charges on nearby gates. Operating at both charge and flux sweet spots, this device is highly insensitive to environmental noise. It enables high-fidelity single-shot quantum non demolition readout of the state of a pair o…
We analyze three different post-processing methods applied to a single-shot qubit readout: the average-signal (boxcar filter), peak-signal, and maximum-likelihood methods. In contrast to previous work, we account for a stochastic turn-on time $t_i$ associated with the leading edge of a pulse signaling one of the qubit states. This model is relevant to spin-qubit readouts based on spin-to-charge conversion and would be generically reached in the limit of large signal-to-noise ratio $r$ for several other physical systems, including fluorescence-based readouts of ion-trap qubits and nitrogen-vaca…
A Majorana box - two topological superconducting nanowires coupled via a trivial superconductor - is a building block in devices aiming to demonstrate nonabelian physics, as well as for topological quantum computer architectures. We theoretically investigate charge transport through a Majorana box and show that current can be blocked when two Majoranas couple to the same lead, fixing their parity. In direct analogy to Pauli spin blockade in spin qubits, this parity blockade can be used for fast and high-fidelity qubit initialization and readout, as well as for current-based measurements of dec…

Quantum information protected by the topology of the storage medium is expected to exhibit long coherence times. Another feature are topologically protected gates generated through braiding of Majorana bound states. However, braiding requires structures with branched topological segments which have inherent difficulties in the semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures now believed to host Majorana bound states. In this paper, we construct quantum bits taking advantage of the topological protection and non-local properties of Majorana bound states in a network of parallel wires, but without…
We study the coupling between a singlet-triplet qubit realized in a double quantum dot to a topological qubit realized by spatially well-separated Majorana bound states. We demonstrate that the singlet-triplet qubit can be leveraged for readout of the topological qubit and for supplementing the gate operations that cannot be performed by braiding of Majorana bound states. Furthermore, we extend our setup to a network of singlet-triplet and topological hybrid qubits that paves the way to scalable fault-tolerant quantum computing.
We propose a threshold detector with an operation principle, based on a parametric period-doubling bifurcation in an externally pumped nonlinear resonance circuit. The ac-driven resonance circuit includes a dc-current-biased Josephson junction ensuring parametric frequency conversion (period-doubling bifurcation) due to its quadratic nonlinearity. A sharp onset of oscillations at the half-frequency of the drive allows for detection of small variations of an effective inductance and, therefore, the read-out of the quantum state of a coupled Josephson qubit. The bifurcation characteristics of th…
We utilize nonlinear absorption to design all-optical protocols that improve both charge state initialization and spin readout for the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond. Non-monotonic variations in the equilibrium charge state as a function of visible and near-infrared (NIR) optical power are attributed to competing multiphoton absorption processes. In certain regimes, multicolor illumination enhances the steady-state population of the NV's negative charge state above 90%. At higher NIR intensities, selective ionization of the singlet manifold facilitates a protocol for spin-to-charge co…
We propose a method for the measurement of adiabatic phases of periodically driven quantum systems coupled to an open cavity that enables dispersive readout. It turns out that the cavity transmission exhibits peaks at frequencies determined by a resonance condition that involves the dynamical and the geometric phase. Since these phases scale differently with the driving frequency, one can determine them by fitting the peak positions to the theoretically expected behavior. For the derivation of the resonance condition and for a numerical study, we develop a Floquet theory for the dispersive rea…
Topological quantum computation encodes quantum information nonlocally by nucleating non-Abelian anyons separated by distances $L$, typically spanning the qubit device size. This nonlocality renders topological qubits exponentially immune to dephasing from all sources of classical noise with operator support local on the scale of $L$. We perform detailed analytical and numerical analyses of a time-domain Ramsey-type protocol for noisy Majorana-based qubits that is designed to validate this coveted topological protection in near-term devices such as the so-called `tetron' design. By assessing d…
Chiral Majorana fermion is a massless self-conjugate fermion which can arise as the edge state of certain two-dimensonal topological matters. It has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in a hybrid device of quantum anomalous Hall insulator and a conventional superconductor. Its closely related cousin, Majorana zero mode in the bulk of the corresponding topological matter, is known to be applicable in topological quantum computations. Here we show that the propagation of chiral Majorana fermions lead to the same unitary transformation as that in the braiding of Majorana zer…
The average time $T$ required for high-fidelity readout of quantum states can be significantly reduced via a real-time adaptive decision rule. An adaptive decision rule stops the readout as soon as a desired level of confidence has been achieved, as opposed to setting a fixed readout time $t_f$. The performance of the adaptive decision is characterized by the "adaptive-decision speedup," $t_f/T$. In this work, we reformulate this readout problem in terms of the first-passage time of a particle undergoing stochastic motion. This formalism allows us to theoretically establish the maximum achieva…
Many promising approaches to fault-tolerant quantum computation require repeated quantum nondemolition (QND) readout of binary observables such as quantum bits (qubits). A commonly used figure of merit for readout performance is the error rate for binary assignment in a single repetition. However, it is known that this figure of merit is insufficient. Indeed, real-world readout outcomes are typically analog instead of binary. Binary assignment therefore discards important information on the level of confidence in the analog outcomes. Here, a generalized figure of merit that fully captures the …
Fast and high-fidelity quantum state detection is essential for building robust spin-based quantum information processing platforms in semiconductors. The Pauli spin blockade (PSB)-based spin-to-charge conversion and its variants are widely used for the spin state discrimination of two-electron singlet-triplet (ST$_0$) qubits; however, the single-shot measurement fidelity is limited by either the low signal contrast, or the short lifetime of the triplet state at the PSB energy detuning, especially due to strong mixing with singlet states at large magnetic field gradients. Ultimately, the limit…
Single spin state evolution induced by the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana (LZSM) interference in a Zeeman-spit four level system in a periodically driven double quantum dot is studied theoretically by the Floquet stroboscopic method. An interplay between spin-conserving and spin-flip tunneling processes with the Electric Dipole Spin Resonance (EDSR) that is induced in an individual dot and enhanced by the LZSM multiple level crossings with the neighboring quantum dot is investigated as a function of the microwave (MW) frequency, driving amplitude, interdot detuning, and magnetic field. A nu…
Considering Rashba quantum wires with a proximity-induced superconducting gap as physical realizations of Majorana fermions and quantum dots, we calculate the overlap of the Majorana wave functions with the local wave functions on the dot. We determine the spin-dependent tunneling amplitudes between these two localized states and show that we can tune into a fully spin polarized tunneling regime by changing the distance between dot and Majorana fermion. Upon directly applying this to the tunneling model Hamiltonian, we calculate the effective magnetic field on the quantum dot flanked by two Ma…
Three key metrics for readout systems in quantum processors are measurement speed, fidelity and footprint. Fast high-fidelity readout enables mid-circuit measurements, a necessary feature for many dynamic algorithms and quantum error correction, while a small footprint facilitates the design of scalable, highly-connected architectures with the associated increase in computing performance. Here, we present two complementary demonstrations of fast high-fidelity single-shot readout of spins in silicon quantum dots using a compact, dispersive charge sensor: a radio-frequency single-electron box. T…
We discuss a network of Kitaev wires coupled to several individually-tunable quantum dots as an extension of the recent experiments on a quantum dot coupled to a nanowire hosting Majorana zero modes [Deng et al. Science 354 1557 (2016) and Deng et al. arXiv:1712.03536 (2017)]. The setup features localized Majorana modes with exact zero energy and we show that they can be manipulated by solely acting on the quantum dots. A braiding process can be obtained by arranging three wires as a trijunction and a charge readout of the quantum dots can be used to reveal the non-Abelian statistics of Majora…
The strong atomistic spin orbit coupling of holes makes single-shot spin readout measurements difficult because it reduces the spin lifetimes. By integrating the charge sensor into a high bandwidth radio-frequency reflectometry setup we were able to demonstrate single-shot readout of a germanium quantum dot hole spin and measure the spin lifetime. Hole spin relaxation times of about 90 $μ$s at 500\,mT are reported. By analysing separately the spin-to-charge conversion and charge readout fidelities insight into the processes limiting the visibilities of hole spins has been obtained. The analyse…
Amplifiers based on Josephson junctions allow for a fast and noninvasive readout of superconducting qubits. Motivated by the ongoing progress toward the realization of fault-tolerant qubits based on Majorana bound states, we investigate the topological counterpart of the Josephson bifurcation amplifier. We predict that the bifurcation dynamics of a topological Josephson junction driven in the appropriate parameter regime may be used as an additional tool to detect the emergence of Majorana bound states.
Controllable single spin evolution at sub-harmonics of electric dipole spin resonance enhanced by four-level Landau-Zener-St{ü}ckelberg-Majorana interference
Dispersive sensing is a powerful technique that enables scalable and high-fidelity readout of solid-state quantum bits. In particular, gate-based dispersive sensing has been proposed as the readout mechanism for future topological qubits, which can be measured by single electrons tunneling through zero-energy modes. The development of such a readout requires resolving the coherent charge tunneling amplitude from a quantum dot in a Majorana-zero-mode host system faithfully on short time scales. Here, we demonstrate rapid single-shot detection of a coherent single-electron tunneling amplitude be…
We present and analyze a hybrid quantum system that interfaces a Majorana-hosted semiconductor nanowire with a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center via a magnetized torsional cantilever. We show that, the torsional mode of the mechanical resonator can strongly couple to the Majorana qubit and the spin qubit simultaneously, which allows to interface them for quantum state conversion through a dark state protocol. This work provides a promising interface between the topological qubit and the conventional spin qubit, and can find interesting applications in quantum information and computation.
Light trapping is a crucial mechanism for synchronization in optical communication. Especially on the level of single photons, control of the exact emission time is desirable. In this paper, we theoretically propose a single-photon buffering device composed of a quantum dot doped with a single Mn atom in a cavity. We present a method to detain a single cavity photon as an excitation of the dot. The storage scheme is based on bright to dark exciton conversion performed with an off-resonant external optical field and mediated via a spin-flip with the magnetic ion. The induced Stark shift brings …
We theoretically study quantum transport through a quantum dot coupled to Majorana bound states confined at the ends of a topological superconducting nanowire. The topological superconductor forms a loop and is threaded by a tunable magnetic flux, which allows one to control the electron transport in the system. In particular, we investigate phonon-assisted transport properties in the device when the central quantum dot interacts with a single long-wave optical phonon mode. We find that when the two Majorana bound states are unhybridized, the zero-temperature linear conductance has a $2π$ peri…
We study the low energy spectrum of a correlated quantum dot embedded between the normal conducting and superconducting reservoirs and hybridized with the topological superconducting nanowire, hosting the Majorana end-modes. We investigate the leaking Majorana quasiparticle and inspect its interplay with the proximity induced on-dot pairing and correlations. In particular, we focus on the subgap Kondo effect near the quantum phase transition/crossover from the spinfull (doublet) to the spinless (BCS-type singlet) configurations. Treating the correlations perturbatively and within the NRG appro…
