Charge-density-wave (CDW) instability and pressure-induced superconductivity in bulk 1T-NbS2 are predicted theoretically by first-principles calculations. We reveal a CDW instability towards the formation of a stable commensurate CDW order, resulting in a sqart(13)*sqart(13) structural reconstruction featured with star-of-David clusters. The CDW phase exhibits one-dimensional metallic behavior with in-plane flat-band characteristics, and coexists with an orbital-density-wave order predominantly contributed by 4d_(z^2-r^2 ) orbital from the inner Nb atoms of the star-of-David cluster. By doubling the cell of the CCDW phase along the layer stacking direction, a metal-insulator transition may be realized in the CDW phase in case the interlayer antiferromagnetic ordering and Coulomb correlation effect have been considered simultaneously. Bare electron susceptibility, phonon linewidth and electron-phonon coupling calculations suggest that the CDW instability is driven by softened phonon modes due to the strong electron-phonon coupling interactions. CDW order can be suppressed by pressure, concomitant with appearance of superconductivity. Our theoretical predictions call for experimental investigations to further clarify the transport and magnetic properties of 1T-NbS2. Furthermore, it would also be very interesting to explore the possibility to realize the CDW order coexisting with the superconductivity in bulk 1T-NbS2.
We summarize the present status of the theories of spin fluctuations in dealing with the anomalous or non-Fermi liquid behavior and unconventional superconductivity in strongly correlated electron systems around their magnetic instabilities or quantum critical points. Arguments are given to indicate that the spin fluctuation mechanisms is the common origin of superconductivity in heavy electron systems, 2-dimensional organic conductors and high-T_c cuprates.
We present a systematic stability analysis for the two-dimensional Hubbard model, which is based on a new renormalization group method for interacting Fermi systems. The flow of effective interactions and susceptibilities confirms the expected existence of a d-wave pairing instability driven by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. More unexpectedly, we find that strong forward scattering interactions develop which may lead to a Pomeranchuk instability breaking the tetragonal symmetry of the Fermi surface.
A possibility of high, room-temperature superconductivity was predicted for metallic hydrogen in the 1960s. However, metallization and superconductivity of hydrogen are yet to be unambiguously demonstrated in the laboratory and may require pressures as high as 5 million atmospheres. Rare earth based "superhydrides" such as LaH10 can be considered a close approximation of metallic hydrogen even though they form at moderately lower pressures. In superhydrides the predominance of H-H metallic bonds and high superconducting transition temperatures bear the hallmarks of metallic hydrogen. Still, ex…
To understand the role of electron-phonon interaction in superconducting MgCNi$_{3}$ we have performed density functional based linear response calculations of its lattice dynamical properties. A large coupling constant $% λ$= 1.51 is predicted and contributing phonons are identified as displacements of Ni atoms towards octahedral interstitials of the perovskite lattice. Instabilities found for some vibrational modes emphasize the role of anharmonic effects in resolving experimental controversies.
Specific heat experiments on a well-characterized polycrystalline sample of the BiS2 based superconductor Bi4O4S3 revealed that it shows a crear specific heat anomaly at about Tc = 4.4 K, consistent with Tc from the resistivity and dc susceptibility. This observation indicates the superconductivity of Bi4O4S3 to be bulk in nature.
By first-principles calculations, we present a doping-dependent phase diagram of LaO{\it M}As ({\it M}=V--Cu) family. It is characterized as antiferromagnetic semiconductor around LaOMnAs side and ferromagnetic metal around LaOCoAs. Both LaOFeAs and LaONiAs, where superconductivity were discovered, are located at the borderline of magnetic phases. Extensive Fermi surface analysis suggests that the observed superconductivity is of electron-type in its origin. We discuss possible pairing mechanisms in the context of competing ferromagnetic phases found in this work and the ferromagnetic spin flu…
The isostructural transition in the tetragonal phase, with sizable change in the anion-height, is realized in heavily H-doped LaFeAsO and (La,P) co-doped CaFe$_2$As$_2$. In these compounds, the superconductivity with higher-Tc (40~50 K) is realized near the isostructural transition. To reveal the origin of the anion-height instability and its important role in realizing the higher-Tc state, we develop the orbital-spin fluctuation theory by including the vertex correction. It is found that the non-nematic orbital fluctuations, which induce the anion-height instability, can develop near the magn…
Many cerium-based heavy fermion (HF) compounds have pressure-temperature phase diagrams in which a superconducting region extends far from a magnetic quantum critical point. In at least two compounds, CeCu2Si2 and CeCu2Ge2, an enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature was found to coincide with an abrupt valence change, with strong circumstantial evidence for pairing mediated by critical valence, or charge transfer, fluctuations. This pairing mechanism, and the valence instability, is a consequence of a f-c Coulomb repulsion term U_fc in the hamiltonian. While some non-supercon…
We report our study of the evolution of superconductivity and the phase diagram of the ternary Fe(Se1-xTex)0.82 (0<=x<=1.0) system. We discovered a new superconducting phase with Tc,max = 14 K in the 0.3 < x < 1.0 range. This superconducting phase is suppressed when the sample composition approaches the end member FeTe0.82, which exhibits an incommensurate antiferromagnetic order. We discuss the relationship between the superconductivity and magnetism of this material system in terms of recent results from neutron scattering measurements. Our results and analyses suggest that superconductivity…
High pressure electrical resistivity and x-ray diffraction experiments have been performed on Fe single crystals. The crystallographic investigation provides direct evidence that in the martensitic $bcc \rightarrow hcp$ transition at 14 GPa the $\lbrace 110\rbrace_{bcc}$ become the $\lbrace 002\rbrace_{hcp}$ directions. During a pressure cycle, resistivity shows a broad hysteresis of 6.5 GPa, whereas superconductivity, observed between 13 and 31 GPa, remains unaffected. Upon increasing pressure an electronic instability, probably a quantum critical point, is observed at around 19 GPa and, clos…
A series of layered CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs compounds with x=0 to 0.20 are synthesized by solid state reaction method. Similar to the LaOFeAs, the pure CeOFeAs shows a strong resistivity anomaly near 145 K, which was ascribed to the spin-density-wave instability. F-doping suppresses this instability and leads to the superconducting ground state. Most surprisingly, the superconducting transition temperature could reach as high as 41 K. The very high superconducting transition temperature strongly challenges the classic BCS theory based on the electron-phonon interaction. The very closeness of the …
Interplay of Pomeranchuk instability (spontaneous symmetry breaking of the Fermi surface) and d-wave superconductivity is studied for the repulsive Hubbard model on the square lattice with the dynamical mean field theory combined with the fluctuation exchange approximation (FLEX+DMFT). We show that the four-fold symmetric Fermi surface becomes unstable against a spontaneous distortion into two-fold near the van Hove filling, where the symmetry of superconductivity coexisting with the Pomeranchuk distorted Fermi surface is modified from the d-wave pairing to (d+s)-wave. By systematically shifti…
We have studied the intrinsic normal and superconducting properties of the oxypnictide LaFePO. These samples exhibit bulk superconductivity and the evidence suggests that stoichiometric LaFePO is indeed superconducting, in contrast to other reports. We find that superconductivity is independent of the interplane residual resistivity $ρ_0$ and discuss the implications of this on the nature of the superconducting order parameter. Finally we find that, unlike $T_c$, other properties in single-crystal LaFePO including the resistivity and magnetoresistance, can be very sensitive to disorder.
We present a volume-sensitive high-energy x-ray diffraction study of the underdoped cuprate high temperature superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (x = 0.12, Tc=27 K) in applied magnetic field. Bulk short-range charge stripe order with propagation vector q_ch = (0.231, 0, 0.5) is demonstrated to exist below T_ch = 85(10) K and shown to compete with superconductivity. We argue that bulk charge ordering arises from fluctuating stripes that become pinned near boundaries between orthorhombic twin domains.
Within the framework of the QED3 theory of cuprates it is argued that bulk antiferromagnetic (AF) order can coexist with d-wave superconductivity in the underdoped region, in agreement with recent experiments. The AF order arises from the phase fluctuating d-wave superconductor via the mechanism of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, provided that fluctuations are sufficiently strong. The phase diagram for this coexistence is mapped out by means of analytical and numerical solutions of the underlying Dyson-Schwinger equation in the large N limit.
We use the weak coupling renormalization group method to examine the interplay between charge-density-wave and s-wave superconducting orders in a quasi-one-dimensional model of electrons interacting with acoustic phonons. The relative stability of both types of order is mapped out at arbitrary nesting deviations and Debye phonon frequency $ω_D$. We singled out a power law increase of the superconducting $T_c\sim ω_D^{0.7}$ from a quantum critical point of charge-density-wave order triggered by nesting alterations. The results capture the key features shown by the proximity between the two type…
Using functional renormalization group method, we study the favorable condition for electronic correlation driven time reversal invariant topological superconductivity in symmetry class DIII. For non-centrosymmetric systems we argue that the proximity to ferromagnetic (or small wavevector magnetic) instability can be used as a guideline for the search of this type of superconductivity. This is analogous to the appearance of singlet unconventional superconductivity in the neighborhood of antiferromagnetic instability. We show three concrete examples where ferromagnetic-like fluctuation leads to…
In the layered iron-based superconductor YFe2Ge2, a high Sommerfeld ratio of ~100 mJ/molK^2 and a T^(3/2) temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity at low temperature T indicate strong electronic correlations and point towards an unconventional pairing state. We have investigated the role of composition and annealing conditions in optimizing the growth of high-quality YFe2Ge2. Our findings confirm that bulk superconductivity is observed in samples with disorder scattering rates less than 2 k_B T_c/hbar. Fe deficiency on the Fe site is identified as the dominant source of disorder, w…
Copper oxides become superconductors rapidly upon doping with electron holes, suggesting a fundamental pairing instability. The Cooper mechanism explains normal superconductivity as an instability of a fermi-liquid state, but high-temperature superconductors derive from a Mott-insulator normal state, not a fermi liquid. We show that precocity to pair condensation with doping is a natural property of competing antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity on a singly-occupied lattice, thus generalizing the Cooper instability to doped Mott insulators, with significant implications for the high…
Single crystals of the Ni-doped FeAs-based superconductor SrFe2-xNixAs2 were grown using a self-flux solution method and characterized via x-ray measurements and low temperature transport, magnetization, and specific heat studies. A doping phase diagram has been established where the antiferromagnetic order associated with the magnetostructural transition of the parent compound SrFe2As2 is gradually suppressed with increasing Ni concentration, giving way to bulk-phase superconductivity with a maximum transition temperature of 9.8 K. The superconducting phase exists through a finite range of Ni…
We report the doping-induced antiferromagnetic state and Fermi liquid state that are connected by a superconducting region in a series of CeIrIn$_{5-x}$Hg$_x$, CeIrIn$_{5-x}$Sn$_x$ and CeIr$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$In$_5$ single crystals. Measurements of the specific heat $C(T)$ and electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ demonstrate that hole doping via Hg/In substitution gives rise to an antiferromagnetic ground state, but substitutions of In by Sn or Ir by Pt (electron doping) favor a paramagnetic Fermi liquid state. A cone-like non-Fermi liquid region is observed near CeIrIn$_5$, showing a diverging effective m…
We present a theoretical study of superconductivity of polarons in the Hubbard-Holstein model. A residual kinematic interaction proportional to the square of the polaron hopping energy between polarons and phonons provides a pairing field for the polarons. We find that superconducting instability in the d-wave channel is possible with small transition temperatures which is maximum in the large to small polaron cross-over region. An s-wave instability is found to be not possible when the effective on-site interaction between polarons is repulsive.
In the generic phase diagram of heavy fermion systems, tuning an external parameter such as hydrostatic or chemical pressure modifies the superconducting transition temperature. The superconducting phase forms a dome in the temperature-tuning parameter phase diagram, which is associated with a maximum of the superconducting pairing interaction. Proximity to antiferromagnetism suggests a relation between the disappearance of antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity. We combine muon spin rotation, neutron scattering, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques to gain access to the magneti…
Superconductivity (SC) and charge-density wave (CDW) are two contrasting yet relevant collective electronic states which have received sustained interest for decades. Here we report that, in a layered europium bismuth sulfofluoride, EuBiS$_2$F, a CDW-like transition occurs at 280 K, below which SC emerges at 0.3 K, without any extrinsic doping. The Eu ions were found to exhibit an anomalously temperature-independent mixed valence of about +2.2, associated with the formation of CDW. The mixed valence of Eu gives rise to self electron doping into the conduction bands mainly consisting of the in-…
Very recent report [1] on observation of superconductivity in Bi4O4S3 could potentially reignite the search for superconductivity in a broad range of layered sulphides. We report here synthesis of Bi4O4S3 at 5000C by vacuum encapsulation technique and basic characterizations. Detailed structural, magnetization, and electrical transport results are reported. Bi4O4S3 is contaminated by small amounts of Bi2S3 and Bi impurities. The majority phase is tetragonal I4/mmm space group with lattice parameters a = 3.9697(2)Å, c = 41.3520(1)Å. Both AC and DC magnetization measurements confirmed that Bi4O4…
Specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and electrical transport measurements were performed at ambient pressure on high-quality single crystal specimens of CeRhIn5 down to ultra-low temperatures. We report signatures of an anomaly observed in all measured quantities consistent with a bulk phase transition to a superconducting state at T_c=110 mK. Occurring far below the onset of antiferromagnetism at T_N=3.8 K, this transition appears to involve a significant portion of the available low-temperature density of electronic states, exhibiting an entropy change in line with that found in other mem…
We derive a phase diagram for the pseudogap onset temperature $T^*$ (associated with the breakdown of the Fermi liquid state, due to strong pairing correlations) and the superconducting instability, $T_c$, as a function of variable pairing strength. Our diagrammatic approach to the BCS - Bose-Einstein cross-over problem self consistently treats the coupling between the single particle and pair propagators, and leads to a continuous evolution of these propagators into the standard $T<T_c$ counterparts. A rich structure is found in $T_c$ which reflects the way in which the superconducting instab…
A feasible strategy to realize the Majorana fermions is searching for a simple compound with both bulk superconductivity and Dirac surface states. In this paper, we performed calculations of electronic band structure, the Fermi surface and surface states, as well as measured the resistivity, magnetization, specific heat for TlSb compound with a CsCl-type structure. The band structure calculations show that TlSb is a Dirac semimetal when spin-orbit coupling is taken into account. Meanwhile, we first found that TlSb is a type-II superconductor with $T_c$ = 4.38 K, $H_{c1}$(0) = 148 Oe, $H_{c2}$(…
We review our recent results on ferromagnetic superconductors, URhGe and UCoGe. High quality single crystals of both compounds were successfully grown. The specific heat shows a clear jump related to the superconducting transition in UCoGe. The finite values of C/T at 0K are discussed in terms of the self-induced vortex state and the value of the ordered moment. With increasing fields for H // b-axis in URhGe, the jump of thermal expansion increases and shifts to lower temperature. The re-entrant and S-shaped superconducting phases for URhGe and UCoGe respectively are explained by the unusual …

We consider heterostructures obtained by stacking layers of two s-wave superconductors with significantly different coupling strengths, respectively in the weak- and strong-coupling regimes. The weak- and strong-coupling superconductors are chosen with similar critical temperatures for bulk systems. Using dynamical mean-field theory methods, we find an ubiquitous enhancement of the superconducting critical temperature for all the heterostructures where a single layer of one of the two superconductors is alternated with a thicker multilayer of the other. Two distinct physical regimes can be ide…

Employing a quantum Monte Carlo simulation we find a pairing instability in the normal state of the infinite dimensional periodic Anderson model. Superconductivity arises from a normal state in which the screening is protracted and which is clearly not a Fermi liquid. The phase diagram is reentrant reflecting competition between superconductivity and Fermi liquid formation. The estimated superconducting order parameter is even, but has nodes as a function of frequency. This opens the possibility of a temporal node and an effective order parameter composed of charge pairs and spin excitations.
Routes to enhance superconducting instability are explored for doped Mott insulators. With the help of insights for criticalities of metal-insulator transitions, geometrical design of lattice structure is proposed to control the instability. A guideline is to explicitly make flat band dispersions near the Fermi level without suppressing two-particle channels. In a one-dimensional model, numerical studies show that our prescription with finite-ranged hoppings realizes large enhancement of spin-gap and pairing dominant regions. We also propose several multi-band systems, where the pairing is dri…
We devise an approach to describe the electronic instabilities of doped multi-walled nanotubes, where each shell has in general a manifold of Fermi points. Our analysis relies on the scale dependence of the different scattering processes, showing that a pairing instability arises for a large enough number of Fermi points as a consequence of their particular geometric arrangement. The instability is enhanced by the tunneling of Cooper pairs between nearest shells, giving rise to a transition from the Luttinger liquid to a superconducting state in a wide region of the phase diagram.
It has long remained elusive whether CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$ thiospinel shows bulk superconductivity. Here we clarify the issue by studying on the samples of sulfur-deficient CuCo$_{2}$S$_{3.7}$ and sulfurized CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$. The sample CuCo$_{2}$S$_{3.7}$ has a smaller lattice constant of $a=9.454$ Å, and it is not superconducting down to 1.8 K. After a full sulfurization, the $a$ axis of the thiospinel phase increases to 9.475 Å, and the thiospinel becomes nearly stoichiometric CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$, although a secondary phase of slightly Cu-doped CoS$_2$ forms. Bulk superconductivity at 4.2 K and …
The mechanism of superconductivity in ${\rm Sr}_{2}{\rm RuO}_{4}$ is studied using a degenerate Hubbard model within the weak coupling theory. When the system approaches the orbital instability which is realized due to increasing the on-site Coulomb interaction between the electrons in the different orbitals, it is shown that the triplet superconductivity appears. This superconducting mechanism is only available in orbitally degenerate systems with multiple Fermi surfaces.
We report an {\it in-situ} scanning tunneling microscopy study of atomically thin films of CeCoIn$_5$, a $d$-wave heavy-fermion superconductor. Both hybridization and superconducting gaps are observed even in monolayer CeCoIn$_5$, providing direct evidence of superconductivity of heavy quasiparticles mediated by purely two-dimensional bosonic excitations. In these atomically thin films, $T_c$ is suppressed to nearly half of the bulk, but is similar to CeCoIn$_5$/YbCoIn$_5$ superlattices containing CeCoIn$_5$ layers with the same thickness as the thin films. Remarkably, the out-of-plane upper c…
A large number of half-Heusler compounds have been recently proposed as three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) with tunable physical properties. However, no transport measurements associated with the topological surface states have been observed in these half-Heusler candidates due to the dominating contribution from bulk electrical conductance. Here we show that, by reducing the mobility of bulk carriers, a two-dimensional (2D) weak antilocalization (WAL) effect, one of the hallmarks of topological surface states, was experimentally revealed from the tilted magnetic field dependen…
A perfect topological superconductor can be realized by the simultaneous existence of bulk superconductivity along with topological non-trivial surface states. In this article, we report single crystal growth of superconducting binary compound Pb2Pd. The crystal is well characterized through X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Selected Area electron diffraction (SAED), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Field emission Scanning electron Microscopy (FESEM) and X-Ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The bulk superconducting nature of the studied crystal is determined through AC susceptibility and magn…
We study the structural and bulk superconducting properties of self flux grown PdBi2Te3 single crystal. Phase purity of as grown crystal is confirmed by Rietveld refinement of gently crushed powder XRD of the same. PdBi2Te3 crystallizes in rhombohedral structure with R-3 m space group along with small impurity of Bi. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images showed layered structure and the elemental analysis by energy dispersive X Ray analysis (EDAX) done on same confirmed the stoichiometry to be near to PdBi2Te3. Characteristic vibrational modes viz. A11g, Eg2, A21g are clearly observed in R…
The mechanism of high temperature superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors remains an outstanding issue in condensed matter physics. The electronic structure, in particular the Fermi surface topology, is considered to play an essential role in dictating the superconductivity. Recent revelation of distinct electronic structure and possible high temperature superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc above 65 K in the single-layer FeSe films grown on the SrTiO3 substrate provides key information on the roles of Fermi surface topology and interface in inducing or enhancing super…

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements are performed on the ferromagnetic superconductor EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.8}$P$_{0.2}$)$_{2}$ ($T\rm_{sc}=22.5\,$K) to probe the delicate interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity. A clear signature of large ferromagnetic domains is found below the ferromagnetic ordering temperature $T\rm_{C}$ = 18.5 K. In a small temperature interval of $\sim$ 1.5 K below $T\rm_{C}$, additional SANS signal is observed, of which the indirect Fourier transform reveals characteristic length scales in between $\sim$ 80 nm to $\sim$ 160 nm. These nanometer-…
The discovery of ThCr2Si2-type AxFe2-ySe2 (A = K, Rb, Cs and Tl) with Tc ~ 30K make much progress in iron-based superconducting field, but their multiple-phase separations are disadvantageous for understanding the origin. On the other hand, for small alkali metals, studies on (Li,Na)FeCu(S,Se)2 and NaFe2-δS2 shows that these compounds possess CaAl2Si2-type structure, implying that ThCr2Si2-type structure is unstable for small alkali-metal intercalated FeSe under high-temperature. Here we report a new intercalate Na0.65(1)Fe1.93(1)Se2 with Tc ~ 37 K, synthesized by low-temperature ammonothermal…
We present thermoelectric power and resistivity measurements in the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe for magnetic field applied along the hard magnetization b axis of the orthorhombic crystal. Reentrant superconductivity is observed near the the spin reorientation transition at $H_{R}$=12.75 T, where a first order transition from the ferromagnetic to the polarized paramagnetic state occurs. Special focus is given to the longitudinal configuration, where both electric and heat current are parallel to the applied field. The validity of the Fermi-liquid $T^2$ dependence of the resistivity throu…
We present nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) at the Co site and ac-susceptibility results in the normal and superconducting (SC) states of CeCoIn5 for H || c near the SC upper critical field Hc2 above 0.1 K. At 4.2 T, 1/T1 rapidly decreases below the SC transition temperature, consistent with the previous reports. Although the field dependence of 1/T1T at 0.1 K shows a peak at 5.2 T above Hc2, the temperature dependence of 1/T1T at 5.2 T is independent of temperature below 0.2 K, showing a Fermi-liquid behavior. In addition, we found no NMR-spectrum broadening by the appearance of in…
Stabilizing superconductivity at high temperatures and elucidating its mechanism have long been major challenges of materials research in condensed matter physics. Meanwhile, recent progress in nanostructuring offers unprecedented possibilities for designing novel functionalities. Above all, thin films of cuprate and iron-based high-temperature superconductors exhibit remarkably better superconducting characteristics (e.g. higher critical temperatures) than in the bulk, but the underlying mechanism is still not understood. Solving microscopic models suitable for cuprates, here, we demonstrate …
Motivated by experiments on twisted bilayer graphene, we study the emergence of superconductivity from $\textit{weak}$ repulsive interactions in the Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, with both spin and orbital degeneracies, and with the filling treated as a tunable control parameter. The attraction is generated through the Kohn-Luttinger mechanism. We find, similar to old studies of single layer graphene, that the leading superconducting instability is in a $d$-wave pairing channel close to Van Hove filling, and is in an $f$-wave pairing channel away from Van Hove filling. The $d$-wave pai…
We investigate the chemical substitution of group 5 into BaFe2As2 (122) iron arsenide, in the effort to understand why Fe-site hole doping of this compound (e.g., using group 5 or 6) does not yield bulk superconductivity. We find an increase in c-lattice parameter of the BaFe2As2 with the substitution of V, Nb, or Ta; the reduction in c predicts the lack of bulk superconductivity [1] that is confirmed here through transport and magnetization results. However, our spectroscopy measurements find a coexistence of antiferromagnetic and local superconducting nanoscale regions in V-122, observed for…
Marcasite class of compounds provide facile platform to explore novel phenomena of fundamental and technological importance, such as unconventional superconductivity or high performance electrocatalyst. We report the synthesis and experimental investigation of a new marcasite CoSeAs in this letter. Experimental investigation of the new material using neutron scattering measurements reveal weak magnetic correlation of cobalt ions below $T$ = 36.2 K. The modest isotropic exchange interaction between cobalt moments, inferred from random phase approximation analysis, hints of magnetically unstable…
Here we report the observation of bulk superconductivity in single crystals of the two-dimensional kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$. Magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and heat capacity measurements reveal superconductivity below $T_c = 0.93$K, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further characterize the normal state as a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological metal. Our results demonstrate that the recent observation of superconductivity within the related kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is likely a common feature across the AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A: K, Rb, Cs) family of compounds and establish them as a rich…
Ferromagnetism is usually considered to be incompatible with conventional superconductivity, as it destroys the singlet correlations responsible for the pairing interaction. Superconductivity and ferromagnetism are known to coexist in only a few bulk rare-earth materials. Here we report evidence for their coexistence in a two-dimensional system: the interface between two bulk insulators, LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO), a system that has been studied intensively recently. Magnetoresistance, Hall and electric-field dependence measurements suggest that there are two distinct bands of charge …
