We investigate if and how growing super-massive black holes (SMBH) known as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and gravitational interactions affect the warm molecular gas and dust of galaxies. Our analysis focuses on the morphologies and warm ISM properties of 630 galaxies at z < 0.1. We use grizy images from the Pan-STARRS survey to classify the galaxies into mergers, early mergers, and non-mergers. We use MIR spectroscopic measurements of emission from rotational H2 transitions, dust and PAH features, and silicate emission or absorption lines at 9.7 microns to study how gravitational interactions impact the warm ISM in AGN and non-AGN hosts. We find that in AGN-hosts, the ISM is warmer, the ratios of H2 to PAHs are larger, the PAH emission line ratios and silicate strengths have a wider range of values than in non-AGN hosts. We find some statistical differences between the H2 emission of mergers and non-mergers, but those differences are less statistically significant than those between AGN and non-AGN hosts.
A systematic analysis of star cluster disruption by tidal shocks -- II. Predicting star cluster dissolution rates from a time-series analysis of their tidal histories
We propose that the Ultra-Diffuse Galaxy (UDG) population represents a set of satellite galaxies born in $\sim10^{10}-10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ halos, similar to field dwarfs, which suffer a dramatic reduction in surface brightness due to tidal stripping and heating. This scenario is observationally motivated by the radial alignment of UDGs in Coma as well as the significant dependence of UDG abundance on cluster mass. As a test of this formation scenario, we apply a semi-analytic model describing the change in stellar mass and half-light radius of dwarf satellites, occupying either cored or cuspy ha…
Globular clusters have proven to be essential to our understanding of many important astrophysical phenomena. Here we analyse spectroscopic observations of ten Halo globular clusters to determine their dark matter content, their tidal heating by the Galactic disc and halo, describe their metallicities and the likelihood that Newtonian dynamics explain their kinematics. We analyse a large number of members in all clusters, allowing us to address all these issues together, and we have included NGC 288 and M30 to overlap with previous studies. We find that any flattening of the velocity dispersio…
Understanding the evolution of stellar clusters in an evolving tidal field is critical for studying the disruption of stellar clusters in a cosmological context. We systematically characterise the response of stellar clusters to tidal shocks using controlled N-body simulations of clusters with various properties that are subjected to different types of shocks. We find that the strength of the shock and the density of the cluster within the half-mass radius are the dominant properties that drive the amount of mass lost by the cluster, with the shape of the cluster profile being of minor influen…
We consider the long-term tidal heating of a star by the supermassive black hole at the Galactic center, SgrA*. We show that gravitational interaction with background stars leads to a linear growth of the tidal excitation energy with the number of pericenter passages near SgrA*. The accumulated heat deposited by excitation of modes within the star over many pericenter passages can lead to a runaway disruption of the star at a pericenter distance that is 4-5 times farther than the standard tidal disruption radius. The accumulated heating may explain the lack of massive ($\gtrsim 10M_{\odot}$) S…
We present maps of a large number of dense molecular gas tracers across the Central Molecular Zone of our Galaxy. The data were taken with the CSIRO/CASS Mopra telescope in Large Projects in the 1.3cm, 7mm, and 3mm wavelength regimes. Here, we focus on the brightness of the shock tracers SiO and HNCO, molecules that are liberated from dust grains under strong (SiO) and weak (HNCO) shocks. The shocks may have occurred when the gas enters the bar regions and the shock differences could be due to differences in the moving cloud mass. Based on tracers of ionizing photons, it is unlikely that the m…
The radii of young (<100 Myr) star clusters correlate only weakly with their masses. This shallow relation has been used to argue that impulsive tidal perturbations, or `shocks', by passing giant molecular clouds (GMCs) preferentially disrupt low-mass clusters. We show that this mass-radius relation is in fact the result of the combined effect of two-body relaxation and repeated tidal shocks. Clusters in a broad range of environments including those like the solar neighbourhood evolve towards a typical radius of a few parsecs, as observed, independent of the initial radius. This equilibrium ma…
We analyze heating and cooling processes in an idealized simulation of a cool-core cluster, where momentum-driven AGN feedback balances radiative cooling in a time-averaged sense. We find that, on average, energy dissipation via shock waves is almost an order of magnitude higher than via turbulence. Most of the shock waves in the simulation are very weak shocks with Mach numbers smaller than 1.5, but the stronger shocks, although rare, dissipate energy more effectively. We find that shock dissipation is a steep function of radius, with most of the energy dissipated within 30 kpc, while radiati…
We systematically study, in the context of the standard cold dark matter model, star-formation suppression effects of two important known physical processes---photoheating due to reionization of the intergalactic medium and gravitational shock heating due to formation of massive halos and large-scale structure---on the global evolution of star formation rate (SFR) density and the so-called cosmic downsizing phenomenon in the redshift range z=0-6. We show that the steep decline of cosmic SFR density from z~2 to z=0 can be primarily explained by gravitational shock heating in two forms: massive …
Using $\sim$427 ks of Chandra observations, we present a study of shock heating and ICM cooling in the galaxy cluster RBS 797. We discover three nested pairs of weak shocks at roughly 50 kpc, 80 kpc and 130 kpc from the center. The total energy associated with the shocks is $\sim6\times10^{61}$ erg, with the central AGN driving a pair of weak shocks every 20-30 Myr with a power $P_{sh}\approx10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Based on its morphology and age ($\sim$30 Myr), the inner cocoon shock is associated with the four equidistant X-ray cavities previously discovered. From the thermodynamic analysis o…
We describe a simple extension to existing models for the tidal heating of dark matter subhalos which takes into account second order terms in the impulse approximation for tidal heating. We show that this revised model can accurately match the tidal tracks along which subhalos evolve as measured in high-resolution N-body simulations. We further demonstrate that, when a constant density core is introduced into a subhalo, this model is able to quantitatively reproduce the evolution and artificial disruption of N-body subhalos arising from finite resolution effects. Combining these results we co…
We use recent X-ray observations of the intracluster medium (ICM) of the galaxy group NGC 5813 to confront theoretical studies of ICM thermal evolution with the newly derived ICM properties. We argue that the ICM of the cooling flow galaxy group NGC 5813 is more likely to be heated by mixing of post-shock jets' gas residing in hot bubbles with the ICM, than by shocks or turbulent-heating. Shocks thermalize only a small fraction of their energy in the inner regions of the cooling flow; in order to adequately heat the inner part of the ICM, they would overheat the outer regions by a large factor…
We have followed up two ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), detected adjacent to stellar streams, with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging and HI mapping with the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in order to investigate the possibility that they might have a tidal origin. With the HST F814W and F555W images we measure the globular cluster (GC) counts for NGC 2708-Dw1 and NGC 5631-Dw1 as $2^{+1}_{-1}$ and $5^{+1}_{-2}$, respectively. NGC 2708-Dw1 is undetected in HI down to a 3$σ$ limit of $\log (M_\mathrm{HI}/\mathrm{M_\odot}) = 7.3$, and there is no apparent HI associated with the nearby stellar str…
Gravitating systems surrounded by a dynamic sea of substructures experience fluctuations of the local tidal field which inject kinetic energy into the internal motions. This paper uses stochastic calculus techniques to describe `tidal heating' as a random walk of orbital velocities that leads to diffusion in a 4-dimensional energy--angular momentum space. In spherical, static potentials we derive analytical solutions for the Green's propagators directly from the number density and velocity distribution of substructures with known mass & size functions without arbitrary cuts in forces or impact…
Recent X-ray observations of merger shocks in galaxy clusters have shown that the post-shock plasma is two-temperature, with the protons hotter than the electrons. By means of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we study the physics of electron irreversible heating in perpendicular low Mach number shocks, for a representative case with sonic Mach number of 3 and plasma beta of 16. We find that two basic ingredients are needed for electron entropy production: (i) an electron temperature anisotropy, induced by field amplification coupled to adiabatic invariance; and (ii) a mechanism to…
Position of the ice line in a circumbinary disc is determined using a simplified and illustrative model. Main sources of the heat in the energy balance of the disc, i.e. heating by the turbulence, irradiation by the components of the binary and the tidal heating are considered. Our goal is to clarify role of the tidal heating in the position of the ice line. When viscous heating and irradiation of the binary are considered, ice line lies interior to the inner radius of the disc in most of the binaries represented by our parameter survey. But tidal heating significantly extends position of the …
While there is overwhelming observational evidence of AGN-driven jets in galaxy clusters and groups, if and how the jet energy is delivered to the ambient medium remains unanswered. Here we perform very high resolution AGN jet simulations within a live, cosmologically evolved cluster with the moving mesh code AREPO. We find that mock X-ray and radio lobe properties are in good agreement with observations with different power jets transitioning from FR-I to FR-II-like morphologies. During the lobe inflation phase, heating by both internal and bow shocks contributes to lobe energetics, and $\sim…
Recent X-ray observations of merger shocks in galaxy clusters have shown that the post-shock plasma is two-temperature, with the protons being hotter than the electrons. In this work, the second of a series, we investigate by means of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations the efficiency of electron irreversible heating in perpendicular low Mach number shocks. We consider values of plasma beta (ratio of thermal and magnetic pressures) in the range $4\lesssim β_{p0}\lesssim 32$ and sonic Mach number (ratio of shock speed to pre-shock sound speed) in the range $2\lesssim M_{s}\lesssim 5$, …
