We use top-down holographic models to study the thermal equation of state of strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma in external magnetic field. We identify different conformal and non-conformal theories within consistent truncations of ${\cal N}=8$ gauged supergravity in five dimensions (including STU models, gauged ${\cal N}=2^*$ theory) and show that the ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal pressure $P_T/P_L$ as a function of $T/\sqrt{B}$ can be collapsed to a 'universal' curve for a wide range of the adjoint hypermultiplet masses $m$. We stress that this does not imply any hidden universality in magnetoresponse, as other observables do not exhibit any universality. Instead, the observed collapse in $P_T/P_L$ is simply due to a strong dependence of the equation of state on the (freely adjustable) renormalization scale: in other words, it is simply a fitting artifact. Remarkably, we do uncover a different universality in ${\cal N}=2^*$ gauge theory in the external magnetic field: we show that magnetized ${\cal N}=2^*$ plasma has a critical point at $T_{crit}/\sqrt{B}$ which value varies by $2\%$ (or less) as $m/\sqrt{B}\in [0,\infty)$. At criticality, and for large values of $m/\sqrt{B}$, the effective central charge of the theory scales as $\propto \sqrt{B}/m$.
We discuss the (spontaneous) chiral symmetry breaking in a strongly coupled anisotropic quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in the presence of the magnetic field, using holography. The physical quantities related to the chiral symmetry breaking (m;B_c) distinguish between the effects of the anisotropy and magnetic field on the plasma. Anisotropy affects the system similar to the temperature and for its larger values heavier quarks can live in the QGP without getting condensed. Raising the anisotropy in the system will also increase the value of the critical magnetic field, B_c, at which the spontaneous c…
We present a five-dimensional twice anisotropic holographic model supported by Einstein-dilaton-three-Maxwell action describing light quarks. The first of the Maxwell fields provides finite chemical potential. The second Maxwell field serves for anisotropy, characterizing spatial anisotropy of the QGP produced in heavy-ion collisions (HIC). The third Maxwell field is related to a magnetic field that appears in HIC. The dependence of the 5-dim black hole solution and confinement/deconfinement phase diagram on this magnetic field is considered. The effect of the inverse magnetic catalyses for li…
We present a five-dimensional fully anisotropic holographic model for heavy quarks supported by Einstein-dilaton-three-Maxwell action; one of the Maxwell fields is related to an external magnetic field. Influence of the external magnetic field on the 5-dim black hole solution and the confinement/deconfinement phase diagram is considered. The effect of the inverse magnetic catalyses is revealed and positions of critical end points are found.
This manuscript reviews recent theoretical progress on the understanding of the quark gluon plasma in a magnetic field that I presented on the conference Hot Quarks 2016, held at South Padre Island, Texas, USA, 12-17 September 2016. It is shown that, using a holographic bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton model, one can have a good quantitative agreement with Lattice data for QCD equation of state and Polyakov loop with nonzero magnetic field. I also present results for the anisotropic shear viscosity ratio $η_{\parallel}/η_{\perp}$, with the conclusion that $η_{\parallel}<η_{\perp}$ for $B>0$.
Currently there is intense interest in the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma produced in peripheral collisions of heavy ions at various facilities, such as the RHIC. In particular, it is essential to understand the difference between such plasmas and their more readily understood counterparts produced in nearly central collisions. The differences arise primarily from the intense magnetic and vorticity fields generated in the QGP in the peripheral case. It has been argued that the magnetic fields might have a profound effect on QGP thermodynamics. Here we will argue, using a gauge-gravity mo…
In order to study the response of the quantum chromodynamic matter to finite electromagnetic fields, we utilize the Polyakov linear - sigma model (PLSM) in mean-field approximation. Due to participants' momentum imbalance and off-center relativistic motion of the spectators' electric charges, localized, short-lived, huge electromagnetic fields are to be generated in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We report on various electromagnetic and transport properties of the new-state-of matter; the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) within the QCD-like approach, PLSM. We find an excellent agreement betwee…
By means of magnetohydrodynamic equations in a non relativistic multi fluid framework, we study the behavior of small amplitude perturbations in cold Quark Gluon Plasmas (QGP). Magnetohydrodynamic equations, along with the QGP equation of state are expanded using the reductive perturbation method. It is shown that such a medium should be considered as multi fluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) system. The result is a nonlinear wave equation which complies with a modified form of the "derivative nonlinear Schrodinger" equation instead of the KdV equation. We show that the complete set of equations, …
We study the electromagnetic (e.m.) conductivity of QGP in a magnetic background by lattice simulations with $N_f = 2+1$ dynamical rooted staggered fermions at the physical point. We study the correlation functions of the e.m.~currents at $T=200,\,250$\,MeV and use the Tikhonov approach to extract the conductivity. This is found to rise with the magnetic field in the direction parallel to it and to decrease in the transverse direction, giving evidence for both the Chiral Magnetic Effect and the magnetoresistance phenomenon in QGP. We also estimate the chiral charge relaxation time in QGP.
We use the gauge/gravity correspondence to study the thermodynamics of a magnetized quark-gluon plasma in the presence of a scalar operator of dimension $Δ=2$. We proceed by working in a five-dimensional gauged supergravity theory, where we numerically construct an asymptotically AdS$_5$ background that describes a black D3-brane in the presence of a magnetic and a scalar fields. We study the asymptotic behavior of the background and its fields close to the AdS$_5$ region to latter perform a thermodynamic analysis of the solution that includes the renormalization of the free energy associated …
In this dissertation we use the gauge/gravity duality approach to study the dynamics of strongly coupled non-Abelian plasmas. Ultimately, we want to understand the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), whose scientifc interest by the scientific community escalated exponentially after its discovery in the 2000's through the collision of ultrarelativistic heavy ions. One can enrich the dynamics of the QGP by adding an external field, such as the baryon chemical potential (needed to study the QCD phase diagram), or a magnetic field. In this dissertation, we choose to investigate the magneti…
Recently, it has been found that the kinematic viscosity of liquids at the minimum, $ν_m$, can be expressed in terms of fundamental physical constants, giving $ν_m$ on the order of $10^{-7}~{\rm m^2/s}$. Here, we show that the kinematic viscosity of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) has a similar value and support this finding by experimental data and theoretical estimations. The similarity is striking, given that the dynamic viscosity and the density of QGP are about 16 orders of magnitude larger than in liquids and that the two systems have disparate interactions and fundamental theories. We discuss …
The viscosity of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is usually described holographically by the entropy-normalized dynamic viscosity $η/s$. However, other measures of viscosity, such as the kinematic viscosity $ν$ and the Reynolds number $Re$, are often useful, and they too should be investigated from a holographic point of view. We show that a simple model of this kind puts an upper bound on $Re$ for nearly central collisions at a given temperature; this upper bound is in very good agreement with the observational lower bound (from the RHIC facility). Furthermore, in a holographic approach using on…
In this letter we study aspects of the holographic superconductors analytically in the presence of a constant external magnetic field. We show that the critical temperature and critical magnetic field can be calculated at nonzero temperature. We detect the Meissner effect in such superconductors. A universal relation between black hole mass $ M$ and critical magnetic field $H_c$ is proposed as $\frac{H_c}{M^{2/3}}\leq 0.687365$. We discuss some aspects of phase transition in terms of black hole entropy and the Bekenstein's entropy to energy upper bound.
We study the magnetic properties of the coloured multiquark states in the quark-gluon plasma where the gluons are deconfined and the chiral symmetry is still broken, using the Sakai-Sugimoto model. There are two possible magnetized multiquark configurations. Both configurations converge to the same configuration at the critical field and temperature before they dissociate altogether either into less coloured multiquarks or into other phases for a fixed density. It is also found that the multiquarks with higher colour charges respond more to the external magnetic field in both the magnetization…
The scaling function of the 2D Ising model in a magnetic field on the square and triangular lattices is obtained numerically via Baxter's variational corner transfer matrix approach. The use of the Aharony-Fisher non-linear scaling variables allowed us to perform calculations sufficiently away from the critical point to obtain very high precision data, which convincingly confirm all predictions of the scaling and universality hypotheses. The results are in excellent agreement with the field theory calculations of Fonseca and Zamolodchikov as well as with many previously known exact and numeric…
We discuss several aspects of superconformal field theories in four dimensions (CFT_4), in the context of electric-magnetic duality. We analyse the behaviour of anomalous currents under RG flow to a conformal fixed point in N=1, D=4 supersymmetric gauge theories. We prove that the anomalous dimension of the Konishi current is related to the slope of the beta function at the critical point. We extend the duality map to the (nonchiral) Konishi current. As a byproduct we compute the slope of the beta function in the strong coupling regime. We note that the OPE of $T_{μν}$ with itself does not clo…
The hypothesis that the magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking is due to interactions of massless fermions in their lowest Landau level is examined in the context of chirally symmetric models with short ranged interactions. It is argued that, when the magnetic field is sufficiently large, even an infinitesimal attractive interaction in the appropriate channel will break chiral symmetry.
Using the grand canonical ensemble formulation of a multi-particle statistical system, the thermodynamical description of the dual QCD has been presented in terms of the bag model of hadrons and analyzed for the quark-gluon plasma phase of hadronic matter. The dual QCD bag construction has been shown to lead to the radial pressure on the bag surface in terms of the vector glueball masses of the magnetically condensed QCD vacuum. Constructing the grand canonical partition function to deal with the quark-gluon plasma phase of the non-strange hadrons, the energy density and the plasma pressure ha…
The thermomagnetic behavior of quark-gluon plasma has recently received a lot of attention. In this work, we make use of the extended self-consistent quasiparticle model to study the thermodynamic properties of magnetized (2+1) flavor quark-gluon plasma. The system is considered as a non-interacting system of quasiparticles with masses depending on both temperature and magnetic field. This allows obtaining the equation of state of the system and the other thermodynamic properties such as the speed of sound. We use the extended self-consistent model to obtain the magnetization and show that QGP…

In peripheral heavy ion collisions, the Quark-Gluon Plasma that may be formed often has a large angular momentum per unit energy. This angular momentum may take the form of (local) rotation. In many physical systems, rotation can have effects analogous to those produced by a magnetic field; thus, there is a risk that the effects of local rotation in the QGP might be mistaken for those of the large genuine magnetic fields which are also known to arise in these systems. Here we use the gauge-gravity duality to investigate this, and we find indeed that, with realistic parameter values, local rota…
In order to study the detailed dynamics and associated non-perturbative features of QCD, a dual version of the color gauge theory based on the topologically viable homogeneous fiber bundle approach has been analysed taking into account its magnetic symmetry structure. In the dynamically broken phase of magnetic symmetry, the associated flux tube structure on a S 2 -sphere in the magnetically condensed state of the dual QCD vacuum has been analyzed for the profiles of the color electric field using flux quantization and stability conditions. The color electric field has its intimate association…
In this thesis, we study the novel dynamic critical phenomena induced by superfluidity and the chiral magnetic effect in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), respectively. In particular, we find the new dynamic universality class of the high-density QCD critical point between the nuclear and quark superfluid phases beyond the conventional Hohnenberg and Halperin's classification. We also consider the second-order chiral phase transition under an external magnetic field and find that the inclusion of the chiral magnetic effect changes the dynamic universality class from the model E into model A within…
Energy loss in anisotropic hot dense QGP in external magnetic field is studied within holographic approach. Energy loss is calculated by estimation of behaviour of the spatial Wilson loops using the effective potential technique. We examine the dependence of the effective potential on the spatial Wilson loops orientation in fully anisotropic background. For this purpose we obtain general formulas for the effective potential and study appearance of the effective potential dynamical wall. We consider particular fully anisotropic model [arXiv:2011.07023] supported by Einstein-Dilaton-three-Maxwel…
We compute the elliptic flow $v_2$ of thermal photons in a strongly coupled plasma with constant magnetic field via gauge/gravity duality. The D3/D7 embedding is applied to generate the contributions from massive quarks. By considering the cases in 2+1 flavor SYM analogous to the photon production in QGP, we obtain the thermal-photon $v_2$, which is qualitatively consistent with the direct-photon $v_2$ measured in RHIC at intermediate energy. However, due to the simplified setup, the thermal-photon $v_2$ in our model should be regarded as the upper bound for the $v_2$ generated by solely magne…
We study the behaviour of a universal combination of susceptibility and correlation length in the Ising model in two and three dimensions, in presence of both magnetic and thermal perturbations, in the neighbourhood of the critical point. In three dimensions we address the problem using a parametric representation of the equation of state. In two dimensions we make use of the exact integrability of the model along the thermal and the magnetic axes. Our results can be used as a sort of "reference frame" to chart the critical region of the model. While our results can be applied in principle to …
We introduce a universal combination of susceptibility and correlation length in the 3D Ising model, depending both on temperature and external magnetic field. Starting from a parametric representation of the equation of state, we study its behaviour close to the critical point. The results we derive can be used as a sort of "reference frame" to chart the scaling region of the 3D Ising universality class. More specifically, we focus on instances of Ising behaviour in finite temperature QCD and, among these, we are particularly interested on the critical ending point in the finite density, fini…
The high-order cumulants of conserved charges are suggested to be sensitive observables to search for the critical point of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This has been calculated to the sixth order in experiments. Corresponding theoretical studies on the sixth order cumulant are necessary. Based on the universality of the critical behavior, we study the temperature dependence of the sixth order cumulant of the order parameter using the parametric representation of the three-dimensional Ising model, which is expected to be in the same universality class as QCD. The density plot of the sign of t…
We investigate the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the Polyakov loop and heavy quark entropy in a bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) holographic model for the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that quantitatively matches lattice data for the $(2+1)$-flavor QCD equation of state at finite magnetic field and physical quark masses. We compare the holographic EMD model results for the Polyakov loop at zero and nonzero magnetic fields and the heavy quark entropy at vanishing magnetic field with the latest lattice data available for these observables and find good agreemen…
The three-dimensional abelian Higgs model has been argued to be dual to a scalar field theory with a global U(1) symmetry. We show that this duality, together with the scaling and universality hypotheses, implies a scaling law for the magnetic permeablity chi_m near the line of second order phase transition: chi_m ~ t^nu, where t is the deviation from the critical line and nu ~ 0.67 is a critical exponent of the O(2) universality class. We also show that exactly on the critical lines, the dependence of magnetic induction on external magnetic field is quadratic, with a proportionality coefficie…
