We propose a method to integrate dissipative PDEs rigorously forward in time with the use of Finite Element Method (FEM). The technique is based on the Galerkin projection on the FEM space and estimates on the residual terms. The proposed approach is illustrated on a periodically forced one-dimensional Burgers equation with Dirichlet conditions. For two particular choices of the forcing we prove the existence of the periodic globally attracting trajectory and give precise bounds on its shape.
We present a reduced basis offline/online procedure for viscous Burgers initial boundary value problem, enabling efficient approximate computation of the solutions of this equation for parametrized viscosity and initial and boundary value data. This procedure comes with a fast-evaluated rigorous error bound certifying the approximation procedure. Our numerical experiments show significant computational savings, as well as efficiency of the error bound.
The stochastic PDE known as the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation (KPZ) has been proposed as a model for a randomly growing interface. This equation can be reformulated as a stochastic Burgers equation. We study a stochastic KdV-Burgers equation as a toy model for this stochastic Burgers equation. Both of these equations formally preserve spatial white noise. We are interested in rigorously proving the invariance of white noise for the stochastic KdV-Burgers equation. This paper establishes a result in this direction. After smoothing the additive noise (by less than one spatial derivative), we esta…
This paper is a synopsis of the recent book A. Boritchev, S. Kuksin, \textit{One-Dimensional Turbulence and the Stochastic Burgers Equation}, AMS Publications, 2021 (to appear). The book is dedicated to the stochastic Burgers equation as a model for 1d turbulence, and the paper discusses its content in relation to the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence.
The memory effects on microscopic kinetic systems have been sometimes modelled by means of the introduction of second order time derivatives in the macroscopic hydrodynamic equations. One prototypical example is the hyperbolic modification of the Burgers equation, that has been introduced to clarify the interplay of hyperbolicity and nonlinear hydrodynamic evolution. Previous studies suggested the finite time blow-up of this equation, and here we present a rigorous proof of this fact.
We address a new numerical scheme based on a class of machine learning methods, the so-called Extreme Learning Machines with both sigmoidal and radial-basis functions, for the computation of steady-state solutions and the construction of (one dimensional) bifurcation diagrams of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). For our illustrations, we considered two benchmark problems, namely (a) the one-dimensional viscous Burgers with both homogeneous (Dirichlet) and non-homogeneous mixed boundary conditions, and, (b) the one and two-dimensional Liouville-Bratu-Gelfand PDEs with homogeneous…
We consider a two-dimensional motion of a thin film flowing down an inclined plane under the influence of the gravity and the surface tension. In order to investigate the stability of such flow, we often use a thin film approximation, which is an approximation obtained by the perturbation expansion with respect to the aspect ratio of the film. The famous example of the approximate equations are the Burgers equation, Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation, KdV--Burgers equation, KdV--Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation, and so on. In this paper, we give a mathematically rigorous justification of a thin film…
The paper recalls two of the regularity results for Burgers' equation, and discusses what happens in the case of genuinely nonlinear, strictly hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. The first regularity result which is considered is Oleinik-Ambroso-De Lellis SBV estimate: it provides bounds on the x-derivative of u when u is an entropy solution of the Cauchy problem for Burgers' equation with bounded initial data. Its extensions to the case of systems is then mentioned. The second regularity result of debate is Schaeffer's theorem: entropy solutions to Burgers' equation with smooth and gener…
We consider the generalised Burgers equation $$ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} + f'(u)\frac{\partial u}{\partial x} - ν\frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial x^2}=0,\ t \geq 0,\ x \in S^1, $$ where $f$ is strongly convex and $ν$ is small and positive. We obtain sharp estimates for Sobolev norms of $u$ (upper and lower bounds differ only by a multiplicative constant). Then, we obtain sharp estimates for small-scale quantities which characterise the decaying Burgers turbulence, i.e. the dissipation length scale, the structure functions and the energy spectrum. The proof uses a quantitative version of an ar…
We consider scalar conservation laws with convex flux and random initial data. The Hopf-Lax formula induces a deterministic evolution of the law of the initial data. In a recent article, we derived a kinetic theory and Lax equations to describe the evolution of the law under the assumption that the initial data is a spectrally negative Markov process. Here we show that: (i) the Lax equations are Hamiltonian and describe a principle of least action on the Markov group that is in analogy with geodesic flow on $SO(N)$; (ii) the Lax equations are completely integrable and linearized via a loop-gro…
We analyze the one-dimensional periodic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in the language of paracontrolled distributions, giving an alternative viewpoint on the seminal results of Hairer. Apart from deriving a basic existence and uniqueness result for paracontrolled solutions to the KPZ equation we perform a thorough study of some related problems. We rigorously prove the links between KPZ equation, stochastic Burgers equation, and (linear) stochastic heat equation and also the existence of solutions starting from quite irregular initial conditions. We also build a partial link between energy solu…
The complete group classification problem for the class of (1+1)-dimensional $r$th order general variable-coefficient Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries equations is solved for arbitrary values of $r$ greater than or equal to two. We find the equivalence groupoids of this class and its various subclasses obtained by gauging equation coefficients with equivalence transformations. Showing that this class and certain gauged subclasses are normalized in the usual sense, we reduce the complete group classification problem for the entire class to that for the selected maximally gauged subclass, and it is the…
This article concerns the weak Galerkin mixed finite element method (WG-MFEM) for second order elliptic equations on 2D domains with curved boundary. The Neumann boundary condition is considered since it becomes the essential boundary condition in this case. It is well-known that the discrepancy between the curved physical domain and the polygonal approximation domain leads to a loss of accuracy for discretization with polynomial order $α>1$. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, we present a detailed error analysis of the original WG-MFEM for solving problems on curved domains, which …
