When surface states (SSs) form in topological insulators (TIs), they inherit the properties of bulk bands, including the electron-hole (e-h) asymmetry but with much more profound impacts. Here, via combining magneto-infrared spectroscopy with theoretical analysis, we show that e-h asymmetry significantly modifies the SS electronic structures when interplaying with the quantum confinement effect. Compared to the case without e-h asymmetry, the SSs now bear not only a band asymmetry as that in the bulk but also a shift of the Dirac point relative to the bulk bands and a reduction of the hybridization gap up to 70%. Our results signify the importance of e-h asymmetry in band engineering of TIs in the thin film limit.
We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in BaMnBi2 single crystals. BaMnBi2 is a layered bad metal with highly anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase, small cyclotronmass, and the first-principles band structure calculations indicate the presence of Dirac fermions in Bi square nets. Quantum oscillations in the Hall channel suggest the presence of both electron and hole pockets, whereas Dirac and parabolic states coexist at the Fermi level.
The asymmetric magnetization reversal in exchange biased Fe/MnF$_{2}$ involves coherent (Stoner-Wohlfarth) magnetization rotation into an intermediate, stable state perpendicular to the applied field. We provide here experimentally tested analytical conditions for the unambiguous observation of both longitudinal and transverse magnetization components using the magneto-optical Kerr effect. This provides a fast and powerful probe of coherent magnetization reversal as well as its chirality. Surprisingly, the sign and asymmetry of the transverse magnetization component of Fe/MnF$_{2}$ change with…
Circular polarization resolved magneto-infrared studies of multilayer epitaxial graphene (MEG) are performed using tunable quantum cascade lasers in high magnetic fields up to 17.5 T. Landau level (LL) transitions in the monolayer and bilayer graphene inclusions of MEG are resolved, and considerable electron-hole asymmetry is observed in the extracted electronic band structure. For monolayer graphene, a four-fold splitting of the $n=0$ to $n=1$ LL transition is evidenced and attributed to the lifting of the valley and spin degeneracy of the zeroth LL and the broken electron-hole symmetry. The …
We probe the current-induced magnetic switching of insulating antiferromagnet/heavy metals systems, by electrical spin Hall magnetoresistance measurements and direct imaging, identifying a reversal occurring by domain wall (DW) motion. We observe switching of more than one third of the antiferromagnetic domains by the application of current pulses. Our data reveal two different magnetic switching mechanisms leading together to an efficient switching, namely the spin-current induced effective magnetic anisotropy variation and the action of the spin torque on the DWs.
We present calculations of quantized conductance and magnetoresistance in nanosize point contacts between two ferromagnetic metals. When conductance is open for only one conduction electrons spin-projection, the magnitude of magnetoresistance is limited by the rate of conduction electron spin-reversal processes. For the case when both spin-channels contribute to the conductance we analyze the influence of the point contact cross-section asymmetry on the giant megnetoresistance. Recent experiments on magnetoresistance of magnetic point contacts are discussed in the framework of the developed th…
By the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we have systematically studied the electronic structures of recently discovered extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) materials LaSb and LaBi. We find that both LaSb and LaBi are semimetals with the electron and hole carriers in perfect balance. The calculated carrier densities in the order of $10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ are in good agreement with the experimental values, implying long mean free time of carriers and thus high carrier mobilities. With a semiclassical two-band model, the perfect charge compensation and high carrier mobilities …
Spin-dependent properties of single-layer graphene (SLG) have been studied by non-local spin valve measurements at room temperature. Gate voltage dependence shows that the non-local magnetoresistance (MR) is proportional to the conductivity of the SLG, which is the predicted behavior for transparent ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic contacts. While the electron and hole bands in SLG are symmetric, gate voltage and bias dependence of the non-local MR reveal an electron-hole asymmetry in which the non-local MR is roughly independent of bias for electrons, but varies significantly with bias for holes.
We consider a disordered two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit coupling placed in a perpendicular magnetic field and calculate the magnitude and direction of the electric-field-induced spin polarization. We find that in strong magnetic fields the polarization becomes an oscillatory function of the magnetic field and that the amplitude of these oscillations is parametrically larger than the polarization at zero magnetic field. We show that the enhanced amplitude of the polarization is a consequence of strong electron-hole asymmetry in a quantizing magnetic field.
We present electrical transport data for single-crystalline Co$_2$FeSi which provide clear-cut evidence that this Heusler compound is truly a half-metallic ferromagnet, i.e. it possesses perfect spin-polarization. More specifically, the temperature dependence of $ρ$ is governed by electron scattering off magnons which are thermally excited over a sizeable gap $Δ\approx 100 K$ ($\sim 9 meV$) separating the electronic majority states at the Fermi level from the unoccupied minority states. As a consequence, electron-magnon scattering is only relevant at $T\gtrsimΔ$ but freezes out at lower temper…
The magneto-optical response of Fe and Ni during ultrafast demagnetization is studied experimentally and theoretically. We have performed pump-probe experiments in the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (T-MOKE) geometry using photon energies that cover the M-absorption edges of Fe and Ni between 40 to 72 eV. The asymmetry was detected by measuring the reflection of light for two different orientations of the sample magnetization. Density functional theory (DFT) wasused to calculate the magneto-optical response of different magnetic configurations, representing different types of excitatio…
Large non-saturating magnetoresistance has been observed in various materials and electron-hole compensation has been regarded as one of the main mechanisms. Here we present a detailed study of the angle-dependent Shubnikov -de Haas effect on large magnetoresistance material pyrite-type PtBi$_{2}$, which allows us to experimentally reconstruct its Fermi-surface structure and extract the physical properties of each pocket. We find its Fermi surface contains four types of pockets in the Brillouin zone: three ellipsoid-like hole pockets $α$ with C$_4$ symmetry located on the edges (M points), one…

We investigate the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of nanostructured Nd0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (NSMO) thin films grown on (100) oriented SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. The thin films fabricated using the pulsed laser deposition technique have been found to possess two distinct surface morphologies: granular and nano rod type. Magnetization measurements have revealed that the films with rod-type morphology exhibit improved in-plane magnetic anisotropy. Magnetotransport studies have revealed that the granular thin films display a characteristic butterfly-shaped low-field magneto-resistive (LFMR) behavio…
The structure inversion asymmetry at surfaces and interfaces give rise to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI), that breaks the spin degeneracy of surface or interface states. Hence, when an electric current runs through a surface or interface, this Rashba effect generates an effective magnetic field acting on the electron spin. This provides an additional tool to manipulate the spin state in materials such as Si and Ge that, in their bulk form, possess inversion symmetry (or lack structural inersion asymmetry). The existence of Rashba states could be demonstrated by photoemission spectrosc…
Slow spin-lattice relaxation dynamics in YbVO4 revealed by extended thermal impedance spectroscopy from AC susceptibility and AC magnetocaloric measurements
A surface magnetoelectric effect is revealed by density-functional calculations that are applied to ferromagnetic Fe(001), Ni(001) and Co(0001) films in the presence of external electric field. The effect originates from spin-dependent screening of the electric field which leads to notable changes in the surface magnetization and the surface magnetocrystalline anisotropy. These results are of considerable interest in the area of electrically-controlled magnetism and magnetoelectric phenomena.
Here, we report the effect of europium (Eu) doping in Bi2Se3 topological insulator (TI) by using different characterization techniques viz. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA) and magneto-transport measurements. Temperature dependent electrical resistivity curves revealed a metallic behaviour both in the presence and absence of applied magnetic field. Magneto-transport measurements showed a decrease in the magneto-resistance (MR) value of the Eu0.1Bi1.9Se3 sample (32% at 5K) in comparison to the pure Bi2Se3 sample (80…

Thin films of perovskite manganite La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ were grown epitaxially on various substrates by either the pulsed laser deposition method or laser molecular beam epitaxy. The substrates change both the volume and symmetry of the unit cell of the films. It is revealed that the symmetry as well as the volume of the unit cell have strong influence on the metal-insulator transition temperature and the size of magnetoresistance.
