We report chain self-diffusion and viscosity data for sodium polystyrene sulfonate (NaPSS) in semidilute salt-free aqueous solutions measured by pulsed field gradient NMR and rotational rheometry respectively. The observed concentration dependence of $η$ and $D$ are consistent with the Rouse-Zimm scaling model with a concentration dependent monomeric friction coefficient. The concentration dependence of the monomeric friction coefficient exceeds that expected from free-volume models of diffusion, and its origin remains unclear. Correlation blobs and dilute chains with equivalent end-to-end distances exhibit nearly equal friction coefficients, in agreement with scaling. The viscosity and diffusion data are combined using the Rouse model to calculate the chain dimensions of NaPSS in salt-free solution, these agree quantitatively with SANS measurements.
In this work, a comprehensive study about the influence on shear viscosity of polyelectrolyte concentration, persistence length, salt concentration and solvent quality is reported, using numerical simulations of confined solutions under stationary Poiseuille flow. Various scaling regimes for the viscosity are reproduced, both under good solvent and theta solvent conditions. The key role played by the electrostatic interactions in the viscosity is borne out when the ionic strength is varied. It is argued that these results are helpful for the understanding of viscosity scaling in entangled poly…
We report an investigation of the equilibrium and dynamic properties of polyelectrolyte solutions confined between platinum surfaces with a dynamic Surface Force Apparatus. The polyelectrolyte adsorbs on the surfaces in a dense compact layer bearing a surface charge in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. The flow of the solution on this charged adsorbed layer is probed over four decades of spatial scales and one decade of frequency by dynamic measurements. At distances larger than the hundredth of nanometers, the flow of the viscoelastic solution is well described by a partial sli…
We investigated the elongational flows of the weakly entangled linear polymer melt using a coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation. We extended the uniform extensional flow (UEF) method developed by Nicholson and Rutledge (D. A. Nicholson and G. C. Rutledge, J. Chem. Phys., 145, 244903 (2016)) for application to Langevin dynamics. We succeeded in observing the elongational viscosity of the weakly entangled linear polymer melt from the equilibrium state to the steady state using the extended UEF method, whereas the conventional rectangular parallelepiped shape technique for extensional flo…
Nonlinear extensional flows are common in polymer processing but remain challenging theoretically because dramatic stretching of chains deforms the entanglement network far from equilibrium. Here, we present coarse-grained simulations of extensional flows in entangled polymer melts for Rouse-Weissenberg numbers $Wi_R=0.06$-$52$ and Hencky strains $ε\geq6$. Simulations reproduce experimental trends in extensional viscosity with time, rate and molecular weight. Studies of molecular structure reveal an elongation and thinning of the confining tube with increasing $Wi_R$. The rising stress is quan…
Understanding and controlling the rheology of polymeric complex fluids that are pushed out-of-equilibrium is a fundamental problem in both industry and biology. For example, to package, repair, and replicate DNA, cells use enzymes to constantly manipulate DNA topology, length, and structure. Inspired by this, here we engineer and study DNA-based complex fluids that undergo enzymatically-driven topological and architectural alterations via restriction endonuclease (RE) reactions. We show that these systems display time-dependent rheological properties that depend on the concentrations and prope…
Single Chain Slip-Spring Model for Fast Rheology Simulations of Entangled Polymers on GPU
The non-linear response of entangled polymers to shear flow is complicated. Its current understanding is framed mainly as a rheological description in terms of the complex viscosity. However, the full picture requires an assessment of the dynamical structure of individual polymer chains which give rise to the macroscopic observables. Here we shed new light on this problem, using a computer simulation based on a blob model, extended to describe shear flow in polymer melts and semi-dilute solutions. We examine the diffusion and the intermediate scattering spectra during a steady shear flow. The …
The slip behavior of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer melts flowing on non-adsorbing surfaces made of short non-entangled PDMS chains densely end-grafted to silica has been characterized. For high enough shear rates, constant slip lengths proportional to the bulk fluid viscosity have been observed, in agreement with Navier's interfacial equation, and demonstrating that the interfacial Navier's friction coefficient is a local quantity, independent of the polymer molecular weight. Comparing the interfacial shear stresses deduced from these measured slip lengths to available friction stress me…
