This paper proposes a Riemannian adaptive optimization algorithm to optimize the parameters of deep neural networks. The algorithm is an extension of both AMSGrad in Euclidean space and RAMSGrad on a Riemannian manifold. The algorithm helps to resolve two issues affecting RAMSGrad. The first is that it can solve the Riemannian stochastic optimization problem directly, in contrast to RAMSGrad which only achieves a low regret. The other is that it can use constant learning rates, which makes it implementable in practice. Additionally, we apply the proposed algorithm to Poincar{é} embeddings, which embed the transitive closure of the WordNet nouns into the Poincar{é} ball model of hyperbolic space. Numerical experiments show that regardless of the initial value of the learning rate, our algorithm stably converges to the optimal solution and converges faster than RSGD, the most basic Riemannian stochastic optimization algorithm.
The low-rank matrix completion problem can be solved by Riemannian optimization on a fixed-rank manifold. However, a drawback of the known approaches is that the rank parameter has to be fixed a priori. In this paper, we consider the optimization problem on the set of bounded-rank matrices. We propose a Riemannian rank-adaptive method, which consists of fixed-rank optimization, rank increase step and rank reduction step. We explore its performance applied to the low-rank matrix completion problem. Numerical experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets illustrate that the proposed rank-adap…
Optimization on Riemannian manifolds widely arises in eigenvalue computation, density functional theory, Bose-Einstein condensates, low rank nearest correlation, image registration, and signal processing, etc. We propose an adaptive regularized Newton method which approximates the original objective function by the second-order Taylor expansion in Euclidean space but keeps the Riemannian manifold constraints. The regularization term in the objective function of the subproblem enables us to establish a Cauchy-point like condition as the standard trust-region method for proving global convergenc…
This paper considers a stochastic optimization problem over the fixed point sets of quasinonexpansive mappings on Riemannian manifolds. The problem enables us to consider Riemannian hierarchical optimization problems over complicated sets, such as the intersection of many closed convex sets, the set of all minimizers of a nonsmooth convex function, and the intersection of sublevel sets of nonsmooth convex functions. We focus on adaptive learning rate optimization algorithms, which adapt step-sizes (referred to as learning rates in the machine learning field) to find optimal solutions quickly. …
In recent years, Riemannian stochastic gradient descent (R-SGD), Riemannian stochastic variance reduction (R-SVRG) and Riemannian stochastic recursive gradient (R-SRG) have attracted considerable attention on Riemannian optimization. Under normal circumstances, it is impossible to analyze the convergence of R-SRG algorithm alone. The main reason is that the conditional expectation of the descending direction is a biased estimation. However, in this paper, we consider linear combination of three descent directions on Riemannian manifolds as the new descent direction (i.e., R-SRG, R-SVRG and R-S…
The gradient method for minimize a differentiable convex function on Riemannian manifolds with lower bounded sectional curvature is analyzed in this paper. The analysis of the method is presented with three different finite procedures for determining the stepsize, namely, Lipschitz stepsize, adaptive stepsize and Armijo's stepsize. The first procedure requires that the objective function has Lipschitz continuous gradient, which is not necessary for the other approaches. Convergence of the whole sequence to a minimizer, without any level set boundedness assumption, is proved. Iteration-complexi…
A variational formulation of accelerated optimization on normed spaces was recently introduced by considering a specific family of time-dependent Bregman Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems whose corresponding trajectories converge to the minimizer of the given convex function at an arbitrary accelerated rate of $\mathcal{O}(1/t^p)$. This framework has been exploited using time-adaptive geometric integrators to design efficient explicit algorithms for symplectic accelerated optimization. It was observed that geometric discretizations were substantially less prone to stability issues, and were t…

Adaptive stochastic gradient algorithms in the Euclidean space have attracted much attention lately. Such explorations on Riemannian manifolds, on the other hand, are relatively new, limited, and challenging. This is because of the intrinsic non-linear structure of the underlying manifold and the absence of a canonical coordinate system. In machine learning applications, however, most manifolds of interest are represented as matrices with notions of row and column subspaces. In addition, the implicit manifold-related constraints may also lie on such subspaces. For example, the Grassmann manifo…

The steepest descent method for multiobjective optimization on Riemannian manifolds with lower bounded sectional curvature is analyzed in this paper. The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, an asymptotic analysis of the method is presented with three different finite procedures for determining the stepsize, namely, Lipschitz stepsize, adaptive stepsize and Armijo-type stepsize. The second aim is to present, by assuming that the Jacobian of the objective function is componentwise Lipschitz continuous, iteration-complexity bounds for the method with these three stepsizes strategies. In additio…
The short-time Fourier transform (STFT), or the discrete Gabor transform (DGT), has been extensively used in signal analysis and processing. Their properties are characterized by a window function. For signal processing, designing a special window called tight window is important because it is known to make DGT-domain processing robust to error. In this paper, we propose a method of designing tight windows that minimize the sidelobe energy. It is formulated as a constrained spectral concentration problem, and a Newton's method on an oblique manifold is derived to efficiently obtain a solution.…
We present Rieoptax, an open source Python library for Riemannian optimization in JAX. We show that many differential geometric primitives, such as Riemannian exponential and logarithm maps, are usually faster in Rieoptax than existing frameworks in Python, both on CPU and GPU. We support various range of basic and advanced stochastic optimization solvers like Riemannian stochastic gradient, stochastic variance reduction, and adaptive gradient methods. A distinguishing feature of the proposed toolbox is that we also support differentially private optimization on Riemannian manifolds.
We introduce a generalized Rayleigh-quotient on the tensor product of Grassmannians enabling a unified approach to well-known optimization tasks from different areas of numerical linear algebra, such as best low-rank approximations of tensors (data compression), geometric measures of entanglement (quantum computing) and subspace clustering (image processing). We briefly discuss the geometry of the constraint set, we compute the Riemannian gradient of the generalized Rayleigh-quotient, we characterize its critical points and prove that they are generically non-degenerated. Moreover, we derive a…
Variations of physical and chemical characteristics of biomass reduce equipment utilization and increase operational costs of biomass processing. Biomass processing facilities use sensors to monitor the changes in biomass characteristics. Integrating sensory data into the operational decisions in biomass processing will increase its flexibility to the changing biomass conditions. In this paper, we propose a multi-stage stochastic programming model that minimizes the expected operational costs by identifying the initial inventory level and creating an operational decision policy for equipment s…

In this paper, we present modifications of the iterative hard thresholding (IHT) method for recovery of jointly row-sparse and low-rank matrices. In particular a Riemannian version of IHT is considered which significantly reduces computational cost of the gradient projection in the case of rank-one measurement operators, which have concrete applications in blind deconvolution. Experimental results are reported that show near-optimal recovery for Gaussian and rank-one measurements, and that adaptive stepsizes give crucial improvement. A Riemannian proximal gradient method is derived for the spe…
It was shown recently by Su et al. (2016) that Nesterov's accelerated gradient method for minimizing a smooth convex function $f$ can be thought of as the time discretization of a second-order ODE, and that $f(x(t))$ converges to its optimal value at a rate of $\mathcal{O}(1/t^2)$ along any trajectory $x(t)$ of this ODE. A variational formulation was introduced in Wibisono et al. (2016) which allowed for accelerated convergence at a rate of $\mathcal{O}(1/t^p)$, for arbitrary $p>0$, in normed vector spaces. This framework was exploited in Duruisseaux et al. (2021) to design efficient explicit …
We revisit first-order optimization under local information constraints such as local privacy, gradient quantization, and computational constraints limiting access to a few coordinates of the gradient. In this setting, the optimization algorithm is not allowed to directly access the complete output of the gradient oracle, but only gets limited information about it subject to the local information constraints. We study the role of adaptivity in processing the gradient output to obtain this limited information from it.We consider optimization for both convex and strongly convex functions and obt…
Variance reduction techniques are popular in accelerating gradient descent and stochastic gradient descent for optimization problems defined on both Euclidean space and Riemannian manifold. In this paper, we further improve on existing variance reduction methods for non-convex Riemannian optimization, including R-SVRG and R-SRG/R-SPIDER with batch size adaptation. We show that this strategy can achieve lower total complexities for optimizing both general non-convex and gradient dominated functions under both finite-sum and online settings. As a result, we also provide simpler convergence analy…

This paper studies large-scale optimization problems on Riemannian manifolds whose objective function is a finite sum of negative log-probability losses. Such problems arise in various machine learning and signal processing applications. By introducing the notion of Fisher information matrix in the manifold setting, we propose a novel Riemannian natural gradient method, which can be viewed as a natural extension of the natural gradient method from the Euclidean setting to the manifold setting. We establish the almost-sure global convergence of our proposed method under standard assumptions. Mo…
We consider the design of polyphase waveforms for ground moving target detection with airborne multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar. Due to the constant-modulus and finite-alphabet constraint on the waveforms, the associated design problem is non-convex and in general NP-hard. To tackle this problem, we develop an efficient algorithm based on relaxation and cyclic optimization. Moreover, we exploit a reparameterization trick to avoid the significant computational burden and memory requirement brought about by relaxation. We prove that the objective values during the iterations are guara…
