General Relativity enjoys the freedom of different geometrical interpretations in terms of curvature, torsion or non-metricity. Within this geometrical trinity, a simpler geometrical formulation of General Relativity manifests itself in the latter, where gravity is entirely attributed to non-metricity. In this Letter, we consider non-linear extensions of Coincident General Relativity $f(\mathring{\mathbb{Q}})$ for phenomenological applications on both cosmological as well as galactic scales. The theory not only delivers dark energy on large scales but also recovers MOND on galactic scales, together with implications for the early universe cosmology. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first relativistic, covariant, and ghost-free hybrid-formulation of MOND which recovers both, General Relativity and MOND in the appropriate limits and reconciles expected cosmological behavior. We further illustrate that previous bimetric formulations of MOND generically suffer from ghost instabilities and $f(\mathring{\mathbb{Q}})$ crystalizes as a unique ghost-free theory.

Weyl bi-connection model manifests a natural framework to automatically produce the Galileon structure. It is shown that this framework can explain scalar Galileon, vector Galileon as well as their interactions by generalizing the Weyl non-metricity. So it can be interpreted as a geometrical realization for Galileons. The non-metricity part enjoys a $U(1)$ gauge invariance. The result is interestingly non-trivial since the Galileon structure appears spontaneously and not by demanding the absence of the Ostrogradsky ghost. This fact suggests a possible deeper conceptual relation between Weyl bi…

We investigate a model of modified gravity recovering the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) in the non-relativistic limit, based on the introduction of a preferred time foliation violating Lorentz invariance in the weak-field regime. Lorentz-invariance violation has been studied in the framework of Einstein-aether theory, the generalization of which, known as non-canonical Einstein-aether theory, having been proposed as a relativistic formulation of MOND. Our model can be seen as a minimal specialization to the hypersurface orthogonal case, which allows a different interpretation in terms of …
Brans-Dicke theory is described by an action that allows the so called frame transformation, which replaces the non-minimal coupling between the scalar field and the curvature by a coupling between the scalar field and matter fields. In this paper, we describe how the viewpoint that they are physically equivalent has a geometrical counterpart in the framework of Weyl integrable geometry. This way, Dicke's interpretation in terms of running units is a physical manifestation of the non-metricity tensor.
Conformal connection of scalar field is shown to produce possible non-metricity in affine connection spaces. In case of self-consistent solution the non-metricity is a correction to background Riemannian structure with respect to gravitational constant and its magnitude may be essential in the early Universe.
We consider inflation within the context of what is arguably the simplest non-metric extension of Einstein gravity. There non-metricity is described by a single graviscalar field with a non-minimal kinetic coupling to the inflaton field $Ψ$, parameterized by a single parameter $γ$. We discuss the implications of non-metricity for chaotic inflation and find that it significantly alters the inflaton dynamics for field values $Ψ\gtrsim M_P/γ$, dramatically changing the qualitative behaviour in this regime. For potentials with a positive slope non-metricity imposes an upper bound on the possible n…
A new relativistic formulation of MOND is advanced, involving two metrics as independent degrees of freedom: the MOND metric g_mn, to which alone matter couples, and an auxiliary metric g*_mn. The main idea hinges on the fact that we can form tensors from the difference, C^a_bc, of the Levi-Civita connections of the two metrics, and these act like gravitational accelerations. In the context of MOND we can form dimensionless `acceleration' scalars, and functions thereof, from contractions of C^a_bc/a0. I look at a class of bimetric MOND theories governed by an action with the gravitational Lagr…
In this paper, I study spherically symmetric solutions in a simple class of geometric sigma models of the Universe. This class of models is a subclass of the wider class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity. The purpose of this work is to examine how the additional scalar degree of freedom modifies Newtonian gravitational force. The general solution for spherically symmetric metric far from the point source is obtained in a weak field approximation. As it turns out, it is parametrized by the mass of the source, and an additional function of time. One particular model is examined as an example.…
Wojtak, Hansen and Hjorth have recently claimed to confirm general relativity and to rule out the tensor-vector-scalar (TeVeS) gravitational theory based on an analysis of the gravitational redshifts of galaxies in 7800 clusters. But their ubiquitous modeling of the sources of cluster gravitational fields with Navarro-Frenk-White mass profiles is neither empirically justified out to the necessary radii in clusters, nor germane in the case of TeVeS. Using MONDian isothermal sphere models consistently constructed within MOND (equivalent to TeVeS models), we can fit the determined redshifts no wo…
The impressive success of the standard cosmological model has suggested to many that its ingredients are all one needs to explain galaxies and their systems. I summarize a number of known problems with this program. They might signal the failure of standard gravity theory on galaxy scales. The requisite hints as to the alternative gravity theory may lie with the MOND paradigm which has proved an effective summary of galaxy phenomenology. A simple nonlinear modified gravity theory does justice to MOND at the nonrelativistic level, but cannot be consistently promoted to relativistic status. The …
This Thesis is devoted to the study of Metric-Affine Theories of Gravity and Applications to Cosmology. The thesis is organized as follows. In the first Chapter we define the various geometrical quantities that characterize a non-Riemannian geometry. In the second Chapter we explore the MAG model building. In Chapter 3 we use a well known procedure to excite torsional degrees of freedom by coupling surface terms to scalars. Then, in Chapter 4 which seems to be the most important Chapter of the thesis, at least with regards to its use in applications, we present a step by step way to solve for …
We consider a simpler geometrical formulation of General Relativity based on non-metricity, known as Coincident General Relativity. We study the ADM formulation of the theory and perform a detailed Hamiltonian analysis. We explicitly show the propagation of two physical degrees of freedom, as it should, even though the role of boundary terms and gauge conditions is significantly altered. This might represent an alternative promising new route for numerical relativity and canonical quantum gravity. We also give an outlook on the number of propagating degrees of freedom in non-linear extension o…
The modified newtonian dynamics (MOND) paradigm of Milgrom can boast of a number of successful predictions regarding galactic dynamics; these are made without the assumption that dark matter plays a significant role. MOND requires gravitation to depart from Newtonian theory in the extragalactic regime where dynamical accelerations are small. So far relativistic gravitation theories proposed to underpin MOND have either clashed with the post-Newtonian tests of general relativity, or failed to provide significant gravitational lensing, or violated hallowed principles by exhibiting superluminal s…
We propose an alternative to particle dark matter that borrows ingredients of MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) while adding new key components. The first new feature is a dark matter fluid, in the form of a scalar field with small equation of state and sound speed. This component is critical in reproducing the success of cold dark matter for the expansion history and the growth of linear perturbations, but does not cluster significantly on non-linear scales. Instead, the missing mass problem on non-linear scales is addressed by a modification of the gravitational force law. The force law app…
In this paper a Weyl geometric scalar tensor theory of gravity with scalar field $Φ$ and scale invariant cubic ("aquadratic") kinetic Lagrangian is introduced. Einstein gauge (comparable to Einstein frame in Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory) is most natural for studying trajectories. In it, the Weylian scale connection induces an additional acceleration which in the weak field, static, low velocity limit acquires the deep MOND form of Milgrom/Bekenstein's gravity. The energy momentum of $Φ$ leads to another add on to Newton acceleration. Both additional accelerations together imply a MOND-ian phenome…
In this article, we consider a special case of Metric-Affine f(R)-gravity for f(R) = R, i.e. the Metric-Affine General Relativity (MAGR). As a companion to the first article in the series, we perform the (3+1) decomposition to the hypermomentum equation, obtained from the minimization of the MAGR action S [g, ω] with respect to the connection ω. Moreover, we show that the hypermomentum tensor H could be constructed completely from 10 hypersurfaces variables that arise from its dilation, shear, and rotational (spin) parts. The (3+1) hypermomentum equations consists of 1 scalar, 3 vector, 3 matr…
It was shown recently that, without jeopardizing the success of the $Λ$ cold dark matter model on cosmic scales, the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) can be derived as an emergent phenomenon when axionlike dark matter particles condense into superfluid on the galactic scales. We propose in this paper a Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar field conformally coupled to the matter components. To maintain the success of MOND phenomenon of dark matter superfluid on the galactic scales, the fifth force introduced by the DBI scalar should be screened on the galactic scales. It turns out that the screenin…
Symmetric teleparallel gravity (STG) offers an interesting avenue to formulate a theory of gravitation that relies neither on curvature nor torsion but only on non-metricity Q. Given the growing number of observations of gravitational waves (GWs) and their use to explore gravitational theories, in this work we investigate the GWs in various extensions of STG, focusing on their speed and polarization. For the simple STG, for theories that arise from the generalized irreducible decomposition of STG, and for f(Q) gravity, we obtain the same speed and polarizations with general relativity. For sca…
A new formulation of MOND as a modified-potential theory of gravity is propounded. In effect, the theory dictates that the MOND potential phi produced by a mass distribution rho is a solution of the Poisson equation for the modified source density rho*=-(1/4 pi G)divergence(g), where g=nu(|gN|/a0)gN, and gN is the Newtonian acceleration field of rho. This makes phi simply the scalar potential of the algebraic acceleration field g. The theory thus involves solving only linear differential equations, with one nonlinear, algebraic step. It is derivable from an action, satisfies all the usual cons…
Statefinder diagnostic is a convenient method that can differentiate between the various dark energy models. In this article, we analyze the statefinder parameters in symmetric teleparallel cosmology. The $f(Q)$ gravity theory is an alternative theory to GR, where gravitational interactions attribute to the non-metricity scalar $Q$. In the present work, we consider two $f(Q)$ models which contains a linear and a non-linear form of non-metricity scalar, specifically, $f(Q)=αQ + \fracβ{Q}$ and $f(Q)=αQ + βQ^2$, where $α$ and $β$ are free parameters and then statefinder parameters $(r,s)$ are eva…
The universal character of the gravitational interaction provided by the equivalence principle motivates a geometrical description of gravity. The standard formulation of General Relativity à la Einstein attributes gravity to the spacetime curvature, to which we have grown accustomed. However, this perception has masked the fact that two alternative, though equivalent, formulations of General Relativity in flat spacetimes exist, where gravity can be fully ascribed either to torsion or to non-metricity. The latter allows a simpler geometrical formulation of General Relativity that is oblivious …
We propose a class of actions for the spacetime metric that introduce corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian depending on the logarithm of some curvature scalars. We show that for some choices of these invariants the models are ghost free and modify Newtonian gravity below a characteristic acceleration scale given by a_0 = cμ, where c is the speed of light and μis a parameter of the model that also determines the late-time Hubble constant: H_0 \sim μ. In these models, besides the massless spin two graviton, there is a scalar excitation of the spacetime metric whose mass depends on the …

We derive the full set of field equations for the Metric-Affine version of the Myrzakulov gravity model and also extend this family of theories to a broader one. More specifically, we consider theories whose gravitational Lagrangian is given by $F(R,T,Q, {\cal T},{\cal D})$ where $T$, $Q$ are the torsion and non-metricity scalars, ${\cal T}$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor and ${\cal D}$ the divergence of the dilation current. We then consider the linear case of the aforementioned theory and assuming a cosmological setup we obtain the modified Friedmann equations. In addition, focus…
A class of scalar-tensor theories (STT) including a non-metricity that unifies metric, Palatini and hybrid metric-Palatini gravitational actions with non-minimal interaction is proposed and investigated from the point of view of their consistency with generalized conformal transformations. It is shown that every such theory can be represented on-shell by a purely metric STT possessing the same solutions for a metric and a scalar field. A set of generalized invariants is also proposed. This extends the formalism previously introduced in \cite{kozak2019}. We then apply the formalism to Starobins…
I describe a tensor-vector-scalar theory that reconciles the galaxy scale success of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) with the cosmological scale evidence for CDM. The theory provides a cosmological basis for MOND in the sense that the predicted phenomenology only arises in a cosmological background. The theory contains an evolving effective potential, and scalar field oscillations in this potential comprise the cold dark matter; the de Broglie wavelength of these soft bosons, however, is sufficiently large that they cannot accumulate in galaxies. The theory predicts, inevitably, a constant …
The Lambda-CDM model is the best fit to cosmological data, and to the observed galactic rotation curves. However, in the absence of a direct detection of dark matter one should explore theories such as MOND, and perhaps also modified gravity theories like fourth order gravity and Scalar-Tensor-Vector Gravity [STVG] as possible explanations for the non-Keplerian behaviour of galaxy rotation curves. STVG has a modified law for gravitational acceleration which attempts to fit data by fixing two free parameters. We show that, remarkably, the biharmonic equation which we get in the weak field limit…
We discuss the most general field equations for cosmological spacetimes for theories of gravity based on non-linear extensions of the non-metricity scalar and the torsion scalar. Our approach is based on a systematic symmetry-reduction of the metric-affine geometry which underlies these theories. While for the simplest conceivable case the connection disappears from the field equations and one obtains the Friedmann equations of General Relativity, we show that in $f(\mathbb{Q})$ cosmology the connection generically modifies the metric field equations and that some of the connection components …
In this paper, we consider the Bianchi type-I space-time with perfect fluid as matter content of the Universe in the framework of $f(Q)$ gravity (where $% Q$ is the non-metricity scalar) recently proposed by Jiménez et al. (Phys. Rev. D 98.4 (2018): 044048). We find exact solutions of the field equations using the anisotropic property of space-time for volumetric hybrid expansion. The cosmological parameters for the linear form of non-metricity scalar i.e. $f\left( Q\right) =αQ+β$ (where $α$ and $β$ are free model parameters) are discussed and compared with recent Hubble measurements. Also, we…
