The cubic $Ia\bar{3}$ (BC8) and tetragonal $P4_32_12$ (ST12) high pressure modifications of Si and Ge are attractive candidates for applications in optoelectronic, thermoelectric or plasmonic devices. Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$ alloys in BC8/ST12 modifications could help overcome the indirect and narrow band gaps of the pure phases and enable tailoring for specific use-cases. Such alloys have experimentally been found to be stable at ambient conditions after release from high pressure synthesis, however their fundamental properties are not known. In this work, we employ {\it ab initio} calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the electronic properties of these compounds as a function of composition $x$. We obtain the effective band structures of intermediate alloys by constructing special quasi random structures (SQS) and unfolding their band structure to the corresponding primitive cell. Furthermore, we show that the indirect band gap of the ST12 Ge end-member can be tuned to become direct at $x_\text{Si} \approx 0.16$. Finally, our investigations also demonstrate that the BC8 modification, on the other hand, is insensitive to compositional changes and is a narrow direct band gap semiconductor only in the case of pure Si.
Point defect species and concentrations in metastable Fe-C alloys are determined using density functional theory and a constrained free-energy functional. Carbon interstitials dominate unless iron vacancies are in significant excess, whereas excess carbon causes greatly enhances vacancy concentration. Our predictions are amenable to experimental verification; they provide a baseline for rationalizing complex microstructures known in hardened and tempered steels, and by extension other technological materials created by or subjected to extreme environments.
Investigating the grain boundary energies of pure fcc metals and their surface energies obtained from ab initio modeling, we introduce a robust method to estimate the grain boundary energies for complex multicomponent alloys. The input parameter is the surface energy of the alloy, which can easily be accessed by modern ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. The method is demonstrated in the case of paramagnetic Fe-Cr-Ni alloys for which reliable grain boundary data is available.
The CoCrFeNi alloy is widely accepted as an exemplary stable base for high entropy alloys (HEAs). Although various investigations prove it to be stable solid solution, its phase stability is still suspicious. Here, we identified that the CoCrFeNi HEA was thermally metastable at intermediate temperatures, and composition decomposition occurred after annealed at 750oC for 800 hrs. The increased lattice distortion induced by minor addition of Al into the CoCrFeNi base accelerated the composition decomposition and a second fcc phase with a different lattice constant occurred in the long time annea…
Nanostructured Fe40Ni40P14B6 alloys ingots of diameter 3~5 mm could be synthesised by a metastable liquid state spinodal decomposition method. The molten Fe40Ni40P14B6 alloy was purified by means of the fluxing technique and thus a large undercooling could be achieved. For undercooling Delta T > 260 K, the microstructure of the undercooled specimen had exhibited liquid state spinodal decomposition in the undercooled liquid state. The microstructure could be described as two intertwining networks with small grains dispersed in them. For undercooling Delta T > 290 K, the overall microstructure o…
Core-level shifts and core-hole screening effects in alloy formation are studied ``ab initio'' by constrained-density-functional total-energy calculations. For our case study, the ordered intermetallic alloy MgAu, final-state effects are essential to account for the experimental Mg 1s shift, while they are negligible for Au 4f. We explain the differences in the screening by analyzing the calculated charge density response to the core hole perturbation.
By fitting to a database of ab-initio forces and energies, we can extract pair potentials for alloys, with a simple six-parameter analytic form including Friedel oscillations, which give a remarkably faithful account of many complex intermetallic compounds. As examples we show results for (crystal or quasicrystal) structure prediction and phonon spectrum for three systems: Fe--B, Al--Mg--Zn, and Al--Cu--Fe.
A density-functional-theory based approach to efficiently compute numerically exact vibrational free energies - including anharmonicity - for chemically complex multicomponent alloys is developed. It is based on a combination of thermodynamic integration and a machine-learning potential. We demonstrate the performance of the approach by computing the anharmonic free energy of the prototypical five-component VNbMoTaW refractory high entropy alloy.
Ab-initio calculations for the structural properties of Zr-Nb alloys at different values of the niobium concentration are done at zero temperature. Different cases for Zr-Nb alloys with unit cells having BCC and HCP structures are considered. Optimal values of the lattice constants are obtained. Critical value for the niobium concentration corresponding to the structural transformation HCP \rightarrow BCC at zero temperature is determined. Electronic densities of states for two different structures with niobium concentrations 12.5% and 25% having HCP and BCC structures, accordingly, are studie…
We present a new modeling scheme for ion self-diffusion coefficient, which broadens the applicable scope of ab initio approach. The essential concepts of the scheme are `domain division' and `coarse graining' of the diffusion network based on the barrier energies predicted by the ab initio calculation. The scheme was applied to evaluate Cu ion self-diffusion coefficient in ε-Cu3Sn phase of Cu-Sn alloy, which is a typical system having long-range periodicity. The model constructed with the scheme successfully reproduces the experimental values in a wide temperature range.
Metastable alloys with transformation/twinning-induced plasticity (TRIP/TWIP) can overcome the strength-ductility trade-off in structural materials. Originated from the development of traditional alloys, the intrinsic stacking fault energy (ISFE) has been relied to tailor TRIP/TWIP in high-entropy alloys (HEA), but with limited quantitative success. Herein, we demonstrate a new strategy for designing metastable HEAs and validate its effectiveness by discovering seven new alloys with experimentally observed metastability for TRIP/TWIP. We propose unstable fault energies as the more effective de…
Technological applications of novel metastable materials are frequently inhibited by abundant defects residing in these materials. Using first-principles methods we investigate the point defect thermodynamics and phase segregation in the technologically-important metastable alloy GaAsBi. Our calculations predict defect energy levels in good agreement with abundant previous experiments and clarify the defect structures giving rise to these levels. We find that vacancies in some charge states become metastable or unstable with respect to antisite formation, and this instability is a general char…
In this progress report we present a new approach to the ab-initio guided bottom up design of beta-Ti alloys for biomedical applications using a quantum mechanical simulation method in conjunction with experiments. Parameter-free density functional theory calculations are used to provide theoretical guidance in selecting and optimizing Ti-based alloys with respect to three constraints: (i) the use of non-toxic alloy elements; (ii) the stabilization of the body centered cubic beta phase at room temperature; (iii) the reduction of the elastic stiffness compared to existing Ti-based alloys. Follo…
A new \textit{D0$_{23}$} metastable phase of Cu$_3$Au is found to grow at the interfaces of Au/Cu multilayers deposited by magnetron sputtering. The extent of formation of this novel alloy phase depends upon an optimal range of interfacial width primarily governed by the deposition wattage of the dc-magnetron used. Such interfacially confined growth is utilized to grow a $\sim$ 300 nm thick Au/Cu multilayer with thickness of each layer nearly equal to the optimal interfacial width which was obtained from secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) data. This growth technique is observed to enhance …
By fitting to a database of ab-initio forces and energies, we can extract pair potentials for alloys, with a simple six-parameter analytic form including Friedel oscillations, which give a remarkably faithful account of many complex intermetallic compounds. Furthermore, such potentials are combined with a method of discovering complex zero-temperature structures with hundreds of atoms per cell, given only the composition and the con- straint of known lattice parameters, using molecular-dynamics quenches. We apply this approach to structure prediction in the Al-Cu-Sc quasicrystal-related system…
We present an ab initio theory of transport quantities of metallic ferromagnets developed in the framework of the fully relativistic tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method. The approach is based on the Kubo-Streda formula for the conductivity tensor, on the coherent potential approximation for random alloys, and on the concept of interatomic electron transport. The developed formalism is applied to pure 3d transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni) and to random Ni-based ferromagnetic alloys (Ni-Fe, Ni-Co, Ni-Mn). High values of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), found for Ni-rich alloys, ar…
The structural, electronic, mechanical and thermal properties of Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$ alloys were studied systematically using ab initio density functional theory at different concentrations (x = 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00). A Special Quasirandom Structure method was used to make alloys having FCC structure with four atoms per unit cell. The ground state properties such as lattice constant and bulk modulus were calculated to find the equilibrium atomic position for stable alloys. The calculated ground state properties are in good agreement with the experimental and previously presented other t…
We present the ab initio results of the structural and magnetic properties of the Pd host matrix implanted with Fe solute atoms at various concentrations. By means of density functional theory we confirm that iron impurities are able to initialize significant magnetization of the Pd atoms, when the impurity consentation exceeds 3 at.%. Besides, we demonstrate that the imposed magnetization depends on impurity positions in the host matrix, in particular, there is a maximum of magnetization for a uniform distribution of the iron impurity.
Using density functional theory based calculations, we have carried out in-depth studies of effect of Co substitution on the magnetic properties of Ni and Pt-based shape memory alloys. We show the systematic variation of the total magnetic moment, as a function of Co doping. A detailed analysis of evolution of Heisenberg exchange coupling parameters as a function of Co doping has been presented here. The strength of RKKY type of exchange interaction is found to decay with the increase of Co doping.
A first-principles derived approach is combined with the inverse Monte Carlo technique to determine the atomic orderings leading to prefixed properties in Pb(Sc_{0.5}Nb_{0.5})O_{3} perovskite alloy. We find that some arrangements between Sc and Nb atoms result in drastic changes with respect to the disordered material, including ground states of new symmetries, large enhancement of electromechanical responses, and considerable shift of the Curie temperature. We discuss the microscopic mechanisms responsible for these unusual effects.
Stacking fault energy (SFE) plays an important role in deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties of face-centered cubic (fcc) metals and alloys. In metastable fcc alloys, the SFEs determined from density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental methods often have opposite signs. Here, we show that the negative SFE by DFT reflects the thermodynamic instability of the fcc phase relative to the hexagonal close-packed one; while the experimentally determined SFEs are restricted to be positive by the models behind the indirect measurements. We argue that the common models underl…
A reliable prediction of interatomic force constants in disordered alloys is an outstanding problem. This is due to the need for a proper treatment of multisite (atleast pair) correlation within a random environment. The situation becomes even more challenging for systems with large difference in atomic size and mass. We propose a systematic density functional theory (DFT) based study to predict the ab-initio force constants in random alloys. The method is based on a marriage between special quasirandom structures (SQS) and the augmented space recursion (ASR) to calculate phonon spectra, densi…
Neutron diffraction and ab initio studies were carried out on Mn2V1-xCoxGa (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) Heusler alloys which exhibits high TC fully compensated ferrimagnetic characteristic for x=0.5. A combined analysis of neutron diffraction and ab initio calculations revealed the crystal structure and magnetic configuration which could not be determined from the X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. As reported earlier, Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data confirmed L21 structure for Mn2VGa and Xa structure for Mn2CoGa. The alloys with x=0.25 and 0.5 possess L21 structure with…
Based on ab-initio simulations, we report on the nature of principally different mechanisms for interaction of Mg and Zn atoms with grain boundaries in Al alloys leading to different morphology of segregation. The Mg atoms segregate in relatively wide GB region with heterogeneous agglomerations due to the deformation mechanism of solute-GB interaction. In contrast, in the case of Zn atoms an electronic mechanism associated with the formation of directional bonding is dominating in the solute-GB interaction. As a result, for Zn atoms it is energetically beneficial to occupy interstitial positio…
We present results of systematic fully relativistic first-principles calculations of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of a disordered and partially ordered tetragonal Fe-Co alloy using the coherent potential approximation (CPA). This alloy has recently become a promising system for thin ferromagnetic films with a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We find that existing theoretical approaches to homogeneous random bulk Fe-Co alloys, based on a simple virtual crystal approximation (VCA), overestimate the maximum MAE values obtained in the CPA by a factor of four. This pronounced dif…
We present an ab initio theory of the Gilbert damping in substitutionally disordered ferromagnetic alloys. The theory rests on introduced nonlocal torques which replace traditional local torque operators in the well-known torque-correlation formula and which can be formulated within the atomic-sphere approximation. The formalism is sketched in a simple tight-binding model and worked out in detail in the relativistic tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method and the coherent potential approximation (CPA). The resulting nonlocal torques are represented by nonrandom, non-site-diago…
We present a comprehensive first-principles investigation of optical, transport, and thermoelectric properties of pure and doped hexagonal Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$ alloys based on density-functional theory calculations, the Boltzmann transport equation, and the generalized quasi-chemical approximation to obtain alloy averages of electronic properties. At low temperature, phase decomposition into the hexagonal elementary crystals is thermodynamically favored, but around and above room temperature random alloys are predicted to be stable. While hexagonal Si has an indirect band gap, the gap of hexagonal…
An empirical multiorbital (spd) tight binding (TB) model including magnetism and spin-orbit coupling is applied to calculations of magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) in CoPt L1_0 structure. A realistic Slater-Koster parametrisation for single-element transition metals is adapted for the ordered binary alloy. Spin magnetic moment and density of states are calculated using a full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave (LAPW) ab initio method and our TB code with different variants of the interatomic parameters. Detailed mutual comparison of this data allows for determination of a subset of the …
In this work we developed a practical and general modeling approach for thermal conductivity of metals and metal alloys that integrates ab initio and semiempirical physics-based models to maximize the strengths of both techniques. The approach supports creation of highly accurate, mechanistic, and extensible thermal conductivity modeling of alloys. The model was demonstrated on α-U and U-rich U-Zr and U-Mo alloys, which are potential fuels for advanced nuclear reactors. The safe use of U-based fuels requires quantitative understanding of thermal transport characteristics of the fuel. The model…
Using an ab initio approach, we explore the stability of small vacancy and vacancy-chromium clusters in dilute body-centred cubic Fe-Cr alloys. To explain experimental observations described in C.D. Hardie et al., J. Nucl. Mater. 439, 33 (2013) and showing the occurrence of Cr segregation in low-Cr alloys, we investigate if chromium can form stable bound configurations with vacancies in alloys with chromium concentration below the low-temperature chromium solubility limit of 10-11 at. %. We find that a single vacancy can attract up to four Cr atoms in the most energetically favourable cluster …
We report the compositional dependence of the electronic band structure for a range of III-V alloys. Density functional theory with the PBE functional is insufficient to mimic the electronic gap energies at different symmetry points of the Brillouin zone. The HSE hybrid functional with screened exchange accurately reproduces the experimental band gaps and, more importantly, the alloy concentration of the direct-indirect gap crossovers for the III-V alloys studied here: AlGaAs, InAlAs, AlInP, InGaP, and GaAsP.
We report a comprehensive study of the binary systems of the platinum group metals with the transition metals, using high-throughput first-principles calculations. These computations predict stability of new compounds in 38 binary systems where no compounds have been reported in the literature experimentally, and a few dozen of as yet unreported compounds in additional systems. Our calculations also identify stable structures at compound compositions that have been previously reported without detailed structural data and indicate that some experimentally reported compounds may actually be unst…
We consider the question of the amorphization of metallic alloys by melt quenching, as predicted by molecular dynamics simulations with semi-empirical potentials. The parametrization of the potentials is discussed on the example of the ternary Cu-Ti-Zr transition metals alloy, using as reference the ab-initio simulation. The pair structure in the amorphous state is computed from a potential of the Stillinger Weber form. The transferability of the parameters during the quench is investigated using two parametrizations: from solid state data, as usual, and from a new parametrization on the liqui…
Since the pioneering efforts of Duwez and coworkers in 1965, when a solid amorphous phase of Pd-Si ($a$-PdSi) was obtained in the vicinity of the eutectic concentration, much work has been done. However, some points related to the atomic structures remain to be systematized. In this work, 8 amorphous Pd$_{100-c}$Si$_{c}$ alloys (c = 2.5, 5, 10, 13.34, 15, 17.5, 20, and 22 at %) were generated by molecular dynamics $ab$ $initio$ simulations; the short-range structure is analyzed using several correlation functions, like Pair Distribution Functions, reduced Pair Distribution Functions, Plane Ang…
In the framework of density functional theory, the structural and magnetic properties of Fe$_{100-x}$Al$_x$ alloys (${5 \leq x \leq 25}$~at.\%) with the different structural order are investigated. Using the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green's function method with a coherent potential approximation, the equilibrium lattice parameters, ground-state energy, and shear moduli for D0$_3$, B2, and A2 structures are calculated. For all structures, the optimized lattice constant increases while the shear modulus demonstrates a decreasing behavior with increasing Al content. The tetragonal magnetostriction …
This paper presents a detailed investigation of FeCr-based quaternary Heusler alloys. By using ultrasoft pseudopotential, electronic and magnetic properties of the compounds are studied within the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT) by using the Quantum Espresso package. The thermodynamic, mechanical, and dynamical stability of the compounds is established through the comprehensive study of different mechanical parameters and phonon dispersion curves. The meticulous study of elastic parameters such as bulk, Young's, shear moduli, etc. is done to understand different mechanical propert…
Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we probe the electronic and magnetic properties of X$_{2}$PtGa (X being Cr, Mn, Fe, Co) Heusler alloys. Our calculations predict that all these systems possess inverse Heusler alloy structure in their respective ground states. Application of tetragonal distortion leads to lowering of energy with respect to the cubic phase for all the materials. The equilibrium volumes of both the phases are nearly the same. These results of our calculations indicate that all these materials are prone to undergo martensite transition, as ha…
Body-centered cubic (bcc) Fe-Mn systems are known to exhibit a complex and atypical magnetic behaviour from both experiments and 0 K electronic-structure calculations, which is due to the half-filled 3d-band of Mn. We propose effective interaction models for these alloys, which contain both atomic spin and chemical variables. They were parameterized on a set of key density functional theory (DFT) data, with the inclusion of non-collinear magnetic configurations being indispensable. Two distinct approaches, namely a knowledge-driven and a machine-learning approach have been employed for the fit…
Using the density functional theory (DFT) with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), the structural and electronic properties of wurtzite AlN, GaN, InN, and their related alloys, Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N and In$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N, were calculated. We have performed accurate {\it ab initio} total energy calculations using the full--potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP--LAPW) method to investigate the structural and electronic properties. In both alloys we found that the fundamental parameters do not follow Vegard's law. The lattice parameters, $a, c,$ and $u$, for the Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N al…
Effect of 3d Transition Metal Doping (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) on the Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Pd Alloys at Low Impurity Concentrations: An Ab initio Study
The segregation behavior of the bimetallic alloys PtPd and CoCr in the case of bare surfaces and in the presence of an oxygen ad-layer has been studied by means of first-principles modeling based on density-functional theory (DFT). For both systems, change of the d-band filling due to charge transfer between the alloy components, resulting in a shift of the d-band center of surface atoms compared to the pure components, drives the surface segregation and governs the chemical reactivity of the bimetals. In contrast to previous findings but consistent with analogous PtNi alloy systems, enrichmen…
The alloying effect on the lattice parameters, isostructural mixing enthalpies and ductility of the ternary nitride systems Cr1-xTMxN (TM=Sc, Y; Ti, Zr, Hf; V, Nb, Ta; Mo, W) in the cubic B1 structure has been investigated using first-principles calculations. Maximum mixing enthalpy due to large lattice mismatch in Cr1-xYxN solid solution shows a strong preference for phase separation, while Cr1-xTaxN exhibits a negative mixing enthalpy in the whole compositional range with respect to cubic B1 structured CrN and TaN, thus being unlikely to decompose spinodally. The near-to-zero mixing enthalpi…
In traditional body-centered cubic (bcc) metals, the core properties of screw dislocations play a critical role in plastic deformation at low temperatures. Recently, much attention has been focused on refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs), which also possess bcc crystal structures. However, unlike face-centered cubic high-entropy alloys (HEAs), there have been far fewer investigations on bcc HEAs, specifically on the possible effects of chemical short-range order (SRO) in these multiple principal element alloys on dislocation mobility. Here, using density functional theory, we investigate the…
In the present work, the aspects of magnetic and structural properties of Ni-Mn-Ga alloys are described in the framework of fist-principles approach and mapped into ternary composition diagrams. The stable atomic arrangement and magnetic alignment for compositions with cubic austenite and tetragonal martensite structures across phase diagrams are predicted. It is shown that Ni- and Ga-rich compositions possess the regular Heusler structure in contrast to Mn-rich compositions with inverse Heusler structure as favorable one. Compositions with unstable austenite structure are concentrated in the …
A first-principles approach to the construction of concentration-temperature magnetic phase diagrams of metallic alloys is presented. The method employs self-consistent total energy calculations based on the coherent potential approximation for partially ordered and noncollinear magnetic states and is able to account for competing interactions and multiple magnetic phases. Application to the Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Pt "magnetic chameleon" system yields the sequence of magnetic phases at T=0 and the c-T magnetic phase diagram in good agreement with experiment, and a new low-temperature phase is predict…
By means of density functional calculations the magnetic and electronic properties and phase stabilities of the Heusler compounds Co$_2$MSi (with M=Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) were investigated. Based on the calculated results we predict the ferromagnetic phases of the compounds Co$_2$TiSi, Co$_2$VSi and Co$_2$CrSi to be half-metals. Of particular interest is Co$_2$CrSi because of its high density of majority spin states at Fermi energy in combination with a reasonably high estimated Curie temperature of 747K. The compounds Co$_2$TiSi and Co$_2$VSi are thermodynamically stable, whereas Co$_2$Cr…
The different contributions to the entropy change linked to the austenite-martensitic transition in a Ni-Mn-Sn metamagnetic shape memory alloy have been determined by combining different experimental techniques. The vibrational contribution has been inferred from the vibrational density of states of both the martensitic and austenite phases. This has been accomplished by combining time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements and ab-initio calculations. Further, the electronic part of the entropy change has also been calculated. Since the martensitic transformation takes place between two par…
