The origin of intrinsic quantum criticality in the heavy-fermion superconductor $β$-YbAlB$_4$ has been attributed to strong Yb valence fluctuations and its peculiar crystal structure. Here, we assess these contributions individually by studying the isostructural but fixed-valence compound $β$-LuAlB$_4$. Quantum oscillation measurements and DFT calculations reveal a Fermi surface markedly different from that of $β$-YbAlB$_4$, consistent with a `large' Fermi surface there. We also find an unexpected in-plane anisotropy of the electronic structure, in contrast to the isotropic Kondo hybridization in $β$-YbAlB$_4$.
In intermetallic compounds with zero-orbital momentum ($L=0$) the magnetic anisotropy and the electronic band structure are interconnected. Here, we investigate this connection on divalent Eu and trivalent Gd intermetallic compounds. We find by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism an out-of-plane easy magetization axis in 2D atom-thick EuAu$_2$. Angle-resolved photoemission and density-functional theory prove that this is due to strong $f-d$ band hybridization and Eu$^{2+}$ valence. In contrast, the easy in-plane magnetization of the structurally-equivalent GdAu$_2$ is ruled by spin-orbit-split $…
Motivated by recent numerical results, we study the quantum phase transitions between Z_2 spin liquid, Neel ordered, and various valence bond solid (VBS) states on the honeycomb and square lattices, with emphasis on the staggered VBS. In contrast to the well-understood columnar VBS order, the staggered VBS is not described by an XY order parameter with Z_N anisotropy close to these quantum phase transitions. Instead, we demonstrate that on the honeycomb lattice, the staggered VBS is more appropriately described as an O(3) or CP(2) order parameter with cubic anisotropy, while on the square latt…
In experiments, the ternary Eu pnictide EuRh2P2 shows an unusual coexistence of a non-integral Eu valence of about 2.2 and a rather high Neel temperature of 50 K. In this paper, we present a model which explains the non-integral Eu valence via covalent bonding of the Eu 4f-orbitals to P2 molecular orbitals. In contrast to intermediate valence models where the hybridization with delocalized conduction band electrons is known to suppress magnetic ordering temperatures to at most a few Kelvin, covalent hybridization to the localized P2 orbitals avoids this suppression. Using perturbation theory w…
We analyze the electronic structure of a mixed-valence ladder system. We find that structural anisotropy and complex electron correlations lead to on-rung charge localization and insulating character. Charge fluctuations within the rung of the ladder interact strongly to the lattice degrees of freedom, which gives rise to large pseudo Jahn--Teller effects. The phase transition in NaV$_2$O$_5$ should be driven by this kind of mechanism.
Resistivity measurements were carried out up to 8 GPa on single crystal and polycrystalline samples of CeCu2Si2 from differing sources in the homogeneity range. The anisotropic response to current direction and small uniaxial stresses was explored, taking advantage of the quasi-hydrostatic environment of the Bridgman anvil cell. It was found that both the superconducting transition temperature Tc and the normal state properties are very sensitive to uniaxial stress, which leads to a shift of the valence instability pressure Pv and a small but significant change in Tc for different orientations…
We study a spin-1/2 SU(2) model on the honeycomb lattice with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange $J$ that favors Néel order, and competing 6-spin interactions $Q$ which favor a valence bond solid (VBS) state in which the bond-energies order at the "columnar" wavevector ${\mathbf K} = (2π/3,-2π/3)$. We present quantum Monte-Carlo evidence for a direct continuous quantum phase transition between Néel and VBS states, with exponents and logarithmic violations of scaling consistent with those at analogous deconfined critical points on the square lattice. Although this strongly suggests a d…
Intermetallic compounds containing $f$-electron elements have been prototypical materials for investigating strong electron correlations and quantum criticality (QC). Their heavy fermion ground state evoked by the magnetic $f$-electrons is susceptible to the onset of quantum phases, such as magnetism or superconductivity, due to the enhanced effective mass ($m^{*}$) and a corresponding decrease of the Fermi temperature. However, the presence of $f$-electron valence fluctuations to a non-magnetic state is regarded an anathema to QC, as it usually generates a paramagnetic Fermi-liquid state with…
$α$-YbAlB$_4$ is the locally isostructural polymorph of $β$-YbAlB$_4$, the first example of an Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor which exhibits pronounced non-Fermi-liquid behavior above $T_{\rm c}$. Interestingly, both $α$-YbAlB$_4$ and $β$-YbAlB$_4$ have strongly intermediate valence. Our single crystal study of the specific heat, magnetization and resistivity has confirmed the Fermi liquid ground state of $α$-YbAlB$_4$ ~in contrast with the quantum criticality observed in $β$-YbAlB$_4$. Both systems exhibit Kondo lattice behavior with the characteristic temperature scale $T^* \sim$ 8 K …
We study the resonating valence bond (RVB) theory of the Hubbard-Heisenberg model on the half-filled anisotropic triangular lattice. Varying the frustration changes the wavevector of maximum spin correlation in the Mott insulating phase. This, in turn, changes the symmetry of the superconducting state, that occurs at the boundary of the Mott insulating phase. We propose that this physics is realised in several families of quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductors.
Temperature dependence of magnetization curves of well homogenized samples of Ce(Co$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$)$_5$ ($0\le x \le 0.7$), a family of representative $4f$-$3d$ intermetallic magnets found in rare-earth permanent magnets, is measured. A remarkable enhancement of intrinsic coercivity is observed with $x=0.3$ and $x=0.4$, persisting to higher temperatures. This experimental observation is theoretically attributed to an effect of electronic correlation among $4f$-electrons. That is, an intrinsic pinning happens originating in an anomalously enhanced magnetic anisotropy energy contributed by an o…
Organic charge transfer salts based on the molecule Pd(dmit)2 display strong electronic correlations and geometrical frustration, leading to spin liquid, valence bond solid, and superconducting states, amongst other interesting phases. The low energy electronic degrees of freedom of these materials are often described by a single band model; a triangular lattice with a molecular orbital representing a Pd(dmit)2 dimer on each site. We use ab initio electronic structure calculations to construct and parametrize low energy effective model Hamiltonians for a class of Me(4-n) EtnX[Pd(dmit)2]2 (X=As…
We construct a family of short-range resonating-valence-bond wave functions on a layered cubic lattice, allowing for a tunable anisotropy in the amplitudes assigned to nearest-neighbour valence bonds along one axis. Monte Carlo simulations reveal that four phases are stabilized over the full range of the anisotropy parameter. They are separated from one another by a sequence of continuous quantum phase transitions. An antiferromagnetic phase, centred on the perfect isotropy point, intervenes between two distinct quantum spin liquid states. One of them is continuously deformable to the two-dime…
We study the three-dimensional XY model with a Z_q anisotropic term. At temperatures T < Tc this dangerously irrelevant perturbation is relevant only above a length scale Lambda, which diverges as a power of the correlation length; Lambda ~ xi^a_q. Below Lambda the order parameter is U(1) symmetric. We derive the full scaling function controlling the emergence of U(1) symmetry and use Monte Carlo results to extract the exponent a_q for q=4,...,8. We find that a_q = a_4 (q/4)^2, with a_4 only marginally larger than 1. We discuss these results in the context of U(1) symmetry at "deconfined" quan…
We explore the electronic band structure of free standing monolayers of chromium trihalides, CrX\textsubscript{3}{, X= Cl, Br, I}, within an advanced \emph{ab-initio} theoretical approach based in the use of Green's function functionals. We compare the local density approximation with the quasi-particle self-consistent \emph{GW} approximation (QS\emph{GW}) and its self-consistent extension (QS$G\widehat{W}$) by solving the particle-hole ladder Bethe-Salpeter equations to improve the effective interaction \emph{W}. We show that at all levels of theory, the valence band consistently changes shap…
We investigate the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice with breathing anisotropy (i.e. with weak and strong triangular units), constructing an improved simplex Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) ansatz by successive applications (up to three times) of local quantum gates which implement a filtering operation on the bare nearest-neighbor RVB state. The resulting Projected Entangled Pair State involves a small number of variational parameters (only one at each level of application) and preserves full lattice and spin-rotation symmetries. Despite its simple analytic form, the sim…
Titanium disulfide TiS$_2$, which is a member of the layered transition-metal dichalcogenides with the 1T-CdI$_2$-type crystal structure, is known to exhibit a wide variety of magnetism through intercalating various kinds of transition-metal atoms of different concentrations. Among them, Fe-intercalated titanium disulfide Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ is known to be ferromagnetic with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and large coercive fields ($H_\text{c}$). In order to study the microscopic origin of the magnetism of this compound, we have performed X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray…
The local electronic and atomic structures of the high-quality single crystal of SrFeO3-{delta} ({delta}~0.19) were studied using temperature-dependent x-ray absorption and valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (VB-PES) to investigate the origin of anisotropic resistivity in the ab-plane and along the c-axis close to the region of thermal hysteresis (near temperature for susceptibility maximum, Tm~78 K). All experiments herein were conducted during warming and cooling processes. The Fe L3,2-edge X-ray linear dichrois results show that during cooling from room temperature to below the transit…
Local quantum phase transitions driven by Kondo correlations have been theoretically proposed in several magnetic nanosystems; however, clear experimental signatures are scant. Modeling a nickelocene molecule on a Cu(100) substrate as a two-orbital Anderson impurity with single-ion easy-plane anisotropy coupled to two conduction bands, we find that recent scanning tunneling spectra measured at different microscope tip heights reveal the existence of a topological quantum phase transition from the usual local Fermi liquid with high zero-bias conductance to a non-Landau Fermi liquid, characteriz…
We have studied the local electronic structure of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 using soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Co-L_3,2 and Mn-L_3,2 edges. We found a high-spin Co^{2+}--Mn^{4+} valence state for samples with the optimal Curie temperature. We discovered that samples with lower Curie temperatures contain low-spin nonmagnetic Co^{3+} ions. Using soft-x-ray magnetic circular dichroism we established that the Co^{2+} and Mn^{4+} ions are ferromagnetically aligned. We revealed also that the Co^{2+} ions have a large orbital moment: m_orb/m_spin ~ 0.47. Together with model calculations, this sugge…
