The momentum amplituhedron is a positive geometry encoding tree-level scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills directly in spinor-helicity space. In this paper we classify all boundaries of the momentum amplituhedron $\mathcal{M}_{n,k}$ and explain how these boundaries are related to the expected factorization channels, and soft and collinear limits of tree amplitudes. Conversely, all physical singularities of tree amplitudes are encoded in this boundary stratification. Finally, we find that the momentum amplituhedron $\mathcal{M}_{n,k}$ has Euler characteristic equal to one, which provides a first step towards proving that it is homeomorphic to a ball.
We propose a simple geometric algorithm for determining the complete set of branch points of amplitudes in planar N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory directly from the amplituhedron, without resorting to any particular representation in terms of local Feynman integrals. This represents a step towards translating integrands directly into integrals. In particular, the algorithm provides information about the symbol alphabets of general amplitudes. We illustrate the algorithm applied to the one- and two-loop MHV amplitudes.
We advance the exploration of cluster-algebraic patterns in the building blocks of scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. In particular we conjecture that, given a maximal cut of a loop amplitude, Landau singularities and poles of each Yangian invariant appearing in any representation of the corresponding Leading Singularities can be found together in a cluster. We check these adjacencies for all one-loop amplitudes up to 9 points. Along the way, we also prove that all (rational) N$^2$MHV Yangian invariants are cluster adjacent, confirming original conjectures.
The all-loop integrand for scattering amplitudes in planar N = 4 SYM is determined by an "amplitude form" with logarithmic singularities on the boundary of the amplituhedron. In this note we provide strong evidence for a new striking property of the superamplitude, which we conjecture to be true to all loop orders: the amplitude form is positive when evaluated inside the amplituhedron. The statement is sensibly formulated thanks to the natural "bosonization" of the superamplitude associated with the amplituhedron geometry. However this positivity is not manifest in any of the current approache…
The scattering amplitudes of planar N = 4 super-Yang-Mills exhibit a number of remarkable analytic structures, including dual conformal symmetry and logarithmic singularities of integrands. The amplituhedron is a geometric construction of the integrand that incorporates these structures. This geometric construction further implies the amplitude is fully specified by constraining it to vanish on spurious residues. By writing the amplitude in a dlog basis, we provide nontrivial evidence that these analytic properties and "zero conditions" carry over into the nonplanar sector. This suggests that …
In this paper we define a new object, the momentum amplituhedron, which is the long sought-after positive geometry for tree-level scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory in spinor helicity space. Inspired by the construction of the ordinary amplituhedron, we introduce bosonized spinor helicity variables to represent our external kinematical data, and restrict them to a particular positive region. The momentum amplituhedron $\mathcal{M}_{n,k}$ is then the image of the positive Grassmannian via a map determined by such kinematics. The scattering amplitudes are extracted …
We initiate a comprehensive investigation of the geometry of the amplituhedron, a recently found geometric object whose volume calculates the integrand of scattering amplitudes in planar N=4 SYM theory. We do so by introducing and studying its stratification, focusing on four-point amplitudes. The new stratification exhibits interesting combinatorial properties and positivity is neatly captured by permutations. As explicit examples, we find all boundaries for the two and three loop amplitudes and related geometries. We recover the stratifications of some of these geometries from the singularit…
In this paper we study a relation between two positive geometries: the momentum amplituhedron, relevant for tree-level scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory, and the kinematic associahedron, encoding tree-level amplitudes in bi-adjoint scalar $ϕ^3$ theory. We study the implications of restricting the latter to four spacetime dimensions and give a direct link between its canonical form and the canonical form for the momentum amplituhedron. After removing the little group scaling dependence of the gauge theory, we find that we can compare the resulting reduced form w…
The study of the moment map from the Grassmannian to the hypersimplex, and the relation between torus orbits and matroid polytopes, dates back to the foundational 1987 work of Gelfand-Goresky-MacPherson-Serganova. On the other hand, the amplituhedron is a very new object, defined by Arkani-Hamed-Trnka in connection with scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. In this paper we discover a striking duality between the moment map $μ:Gr^{\geq0}_{k+1,n}\toΔ_{k+1,n}$ from the positive Grassmannian $Gr^{\geq0}_{k+1,n}$ to the hypersimplex, and the amplituhedron map $\tilde{Z}…
We compute the two-loop result for the null pentagonal Wilson loop with a Lagrangian insertion (normalized by the Wilson loop without insertion) in planar, maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. This finite observable is closely related to the Amplituhedron, and it is reminiscent of finite parts of planar two-loop five-particle scattering amplitudes. We verify that, up to this loop order, the leading singularities are given by the same conformally invariant expressions that appear in all-plus pure Yang-Mills amplitudes. The accompanying weight-four transcendental functions are expressed i…
Non-perturbative D-brane instanton effects in 4d N = 1 string compactifications can be geometrized in terms of a backreacted generalized geometry. We extend earlier results to setups in which the D-brane instanton is charged under the 4d gauge symmetries, and show that the backreacted topology yields the correct charged field theory operators in the 4d effective action. In type IIA models with D6-branes, the backreaction of D2-brane instantons forces the recombination of D6-branes, such that the 4d charged field theory operators arise from basic worldsheet instantons in the backreacted geometr…
A common method to prepare states in AdS/CFT is to perform the Euclidean path integral with sources turned on for single-trace operators. These states can be interpreted as coherent states of the bulk quantum theory associated to Lorentzian initial data on a Cauchy slice. In this paper, we discuss the extent to which arbitrary initial data can be obtained in this way. We show that the initial data must be analytic and define the subset of it that can be prepared by imposing bulk regularity. Turning this around, we show that for generic analytic initial data the corresponding Euclidean section …
Geometrical form of the one-loop divergences induced by conical singularities of background manifolds is studied. To this aim the heat kernel asymptotic expansion on spaces having the structure $C_α\times Σ$ near singular surface $Σ$ is analysed. Surface corrections to standard second and third heat coefficients are obtained explicitly in terms of angle $α$ of a cone $C_α$ and components of the Riemann tensor. These results are compared to ones to be already known for some particular cases. Physical aspects of the surface divergences are shortly discussed.
We discuss combined constraints, coming from the cosmic microwave background shift parameter $\mathcal{R}$, baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) distance parameter $\mathcal{A}$, and from the latest type Ia supernovae data, imposed on cosmological models which allow sudden future singularities of pressure. We show that due to their weakness such sudden singularities may happen in the very near future and that at present they can mimic standard dark energy models.
We study time-dependent backgrounds in the low energy regimes of string theories. In particular the emphasis is on the general study of exotic phenomena such as positive acceleration and gravitational bounces. We generalize the usual Hawking-Penrose cosmological singularity theorems to higher-dimensional spacetimes and discuss their implications for time-dependent solutions in supergravity theories. The explicit examples we consider fall in two categories. First we consider effective lower-dimensional gravitational theories obtained from compactifications of ten and eleven-dimensional supergra…
A gravitational mirror is a non-singular finite redshift surface which bounces all incident null geodesics. While a white mirror (outward bouncing) resembles 't Hooft's brick wall, a black mirror (inward bouncing) offers a novel mechanism for sealing off curvature singularities. The geometry underlying a two-sided mirror is characterized by a single signature change, to be contrasted with the signature flip which governs the black hole geometry. To demonstrate the phenomenon analytically, we derive an exact, static, radially symmetric, two-sided mirror solution, which asymptotes the massless B…
We describe a static solution for $d = 2$ critical string theory including the tachyon $T$ but with its potential $V (T)$ set to zero. This solution thus incorporates tachyon back reaction and, when $T = 0$, reduces to the black hole solution. When $T \neq 0$ we find that (1) the Schwarzschild horizon of the above black hole splits into two, resembling Reissner-Nordstrom horizons and (2) the curvature scalar develops new singularities at the horizons. We show that these features will persist even when $V (T)$ is nonzero. We present a time dependent extension of our static solution and discuss …
