Many applications of practical interest rely on time evolution of Hamiltonians that are given by a sum of Pauli operators. Quantum circuits for exact time evolution of single Pauli operators are well known, and can be extended trivially to sums of commuting Paulis by concatenating the circuits of individual terms. In this paper we reduce the circuit complexity of Hamiltonian simulation by partitioning the Pauli operators into mutually commuting clusters and exponentiating the elements within each cluster after applying simultaneous diagonalization. We provide a practical algorithm for partitioning sets of Paulis into commuting subsets, and show that the proposed approach can help to significantly reduce both the number of CNOT operations and circuit depth for Hamiltonians arising in quantum chemistry. The algorithms for simultaneous diagonalization are also applicable in the context of stabilizer states; in particular we provide novel four- and five-stage representations, each containing only a single stage of conditional gates.
We report numerical results on the diagonalization of 1D transverse field Ising model. Numerical simulations using the Pauli product representation yield diagonalization from 3 spins to 22 spins in the transverse field Ising model with the number of global Jacobi unitary transformations and number of final terms in diagonalized spin z representation both grew polynomial with the number of spins. These results computed on a classical computer show promise in constructing a quantum circuit to simulate diagonalized generic many-particle Hamiltonians using polynomial number of gates.
The low-energy and weak-field limit of Dirac equation can be obtained by an order-by-order block diagonalization approach to any desired order in the parameter $π/mc$ ($π$ is the kinetic momentum and $m$ is the mass of the particle). In the previous work, it has been shown that, up to the order of $(π/mc)^8$, the Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian in the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) representation may be expressed as a closed form and consistent with the classical Hamiltonian, which is the sum of the classical relativistic Hamiltonian for orbital motion and the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi (T-BMT) Hamiltonian…
We propose an efficient algorithm for partitioning Pauli strings into subgroups, which can be simultaneously measured in a single quantum circuit. Our partitioning algorithm drastically reduces the total number of measurements in a variational quantum eigensolver for a quantum chemistry, one of the most promising applications of quantum computing. The algorithm is based on the Ising model optimization problem, which can be quickly solved using an Ising machine. We develop an algorithm that is applicable to problems with sizes larger than the maximum number of variables that an Ising machine ca…

We develop a quantum filter diagonalization method (QFD) that lies somewhere between the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and the phase estimation algorithm (PEA) in terms of required quantum circuit resources and conceptual simplicity. QFD uses a set of of time-propagated guess states as a variational basis for approximate diagonalization of a sparse Pauli Hamiltonian. The variational coefficients of the basis functions are determined by the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure by classically solving a generalized eigenvalue problem in the space of time-propagated guess states. The matrix elements of…
It is well known that a set of non-defect matrices can be simultaneously diagonalized if and only if the matrices commute. In the case of non-commuting matrices, the best that can be achieved is simultaneous block diagonalization. Here we give an efficient algorithm to explicitly compute a transfer matrix which realizes the simultaneous block diagonalization of unitary matrices whose decomposition in irreducible blocks (common invariant subspaces) is known from elsewhere. Our main motivation lies in particle physics, where the resulting transfer matrix must be known explicitly in order to uneq…
Estimating the expectation value of an operator corresponding to an observable is a fundamental task in quantum computation. It is often impossible to obtain such estimates directly, as the computer is restricted to measuring in a fixed computational basis. One common solution splits the operator into a weighted sum of Pauli operators and measures each separately, at the cost of many measurements. An improved version collects mutually commuting Pauli operators together before measuring all operators within a collection simultaneously. The effectiveness of doing this depends on two factors. We investigate physical models which possess simultaneous ordinary and type A N-fold supersymmetries, which we call type A (N,1)-fold supersymmetry. Inequivalent type A (N,1)-fold supersymmetric models with real-valued potentials are completely classified. Among them, we find that a trigonometric Rosen-Morse type and its elliptic version are of physical interest. We investigate various aspects of these models, namely, dynamical breaking and interrelation between ordinary and N-fold supersymmetries, shape invariance, quasi-solvability, and an associated algebra which is composed of one bosonic …
Measuring the expectation value of Pauli operators on prepared quantum states is a fundamental task in a multitude of quantum algorithms. Simultaneously measuring sets of operators allows for fewer measurements and an overall speedup of the measurement process. We investigate the task of partitioning a random subset of Pauli operators into simultaneously-measurable parts. Using heuristics from coloring random graphs, we give an upper bound for the expected number of parts in our partition. We go on to conjecture that allowing arbitrary Clifford operators before measurement, rather than single-…
Given a Hamiltonian that is a sum of commuting few-body terms, the commuting Hamiltonian problem is to determine if there exists a quantum state that is the simultaneous eigenstate of all of these terms that minimizes each term individually. This problem is known to be in the complexity class quantum Merlin-Arthur, but is widely thought to not be complete for this class. Here we show that a limited form of this problem when the individual terms are all made up of tensor products of Pauli matrices is efficiently solvable on a classical computer and thus in the complexity class P. The problem ca…
Variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is a promising algorithm suitable for near-term quantum machines. VQE aims to approximate the lowest eigenvalue of an exponentially sized matrix in polynomial time. It minimizes quantum resource requirements both by co-processing with a classical processor and by structuring computation into many subproblems. Each quantum subproblem involves a separate state preparation terminated by the measurement of one Pauli string. However, the number of such Pauli strings scales as $N^4$ for typical problems of interest--a daunting growth rate that poses a serious li…

By employing the variational approach, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), exact diagonalization as well as symmetry and mean-field analyses, the ground state properties of the two-bath spin boson model with simultaneous diagonal and off-diagonal coupling are systematically studied in the sub-Ohmic regime. A novel quantum phase transition from a doubly degenerate "localized phase" to the other doubly degenerate "delocalized phase" is uncovered. Via the multi-D1 ansatz as the variational wave function, transition points are determined accurately, consistent with the results from DMRG a…
