Let $p$ be a prime number and $\mathbb{Z}_p=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$. We study finite groups with abelian derived subgroup and exponent $p$ in terms of group extension data and their matrix presentations. We show a one-to-one correspondence between the following two sets: (i) the isoclasses of class 2 groups of exponent $p$ and order $p^{m+n}$ and with derived subgroup $\mathbb{Z}_p^n$, and (ii) the set $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))/\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ of orbits of $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))$ under the congruence action by $\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$, where $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))$ is the set of $n$-dimensional subspaces of anti-symmetric matrices of order $m$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$. We give a description of the orbit spaces $\text{Gr}(2, \text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))/\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ for all $m$ and $p$ by applying the theory of pencils of anti-symmetric matrices. Based on this, we show complete sets of representatives of orbits of $\text{Gr}(3,\text{AS}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3)$, $\text{Gr}(4, \text{AS}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3)$ and $\text{Gr}(3, \text{AS}_5(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_5(\mathbb{Z}_3)$. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of corresponding class 2 groups of exponent $p$. In particular, we recover the classification of groups with exponent 3 and order $\le 3^8$.
Given a prime $p$, we construct a permutation group containing at least $p^{p-2}$ non-conjugated regular elementary abelian subgroups of order $p^3$. This gives the first example of a permutation group with exponentially many non-conjugated regular subgroups.
We present an elementary proof that the nonassociative simple Moufang loops over finite prime fields are generated by three elements. In the last section, we conclude that integral Cayley numbers of unit norm are generated multiplicatively by three elements.
This note collects several results on the capability of $p$-groups of class two and prime exponent. Among the new results, we settle the 4-generator case for this class.
Let $P$ be a finite $p$-group and $p$ be an odd prime. Let $\mathcal{A}_p(P)_{\geq2}$ be a poset consisting of elementary abelian subgroups of rank at least 2. If the derived subgroup $P'\cong C_p\times C_p$, then the spheres occurring in $\mathcal{A}_p(P)_{\geq2}$ all have the same dimension.
For an odd prime p the cohomology ring of an elementary abelian p-group is polynomial tensor exterior. We show that the ideal of essential classes is the Steenrod closure of the class generating the top exterior power. As a module over the polynomial algebra, the essential ideal is free on the set of Mui invariants.
We prove that any finitely generated elementary amenable group of zero (algebraic) entropy contains a nilpotent subgroup of finite index or, equivalently, any finitely generated elementary amenable group of exponential growth is of uniformly exponential growth. We also show that 0 is an accumulation point of the set of entropies of elementary amenable groups.
We consider the capability of $p$ groups of class two and odd prime exponent. We use linear algebra and counting arguments to establish a number of new results. In particular, we settle the 4-generator case, and prove a sufficient condition based on the ranks of $G/Z(G)$ and $[G,G]$.
Let $G$ be a group and write $\mbox{Perm}(G)$ for its symmetric group. Define $\mbox{Hol}(G)$ to be the holomorph of $G$, regarded as a subgroup of $\mbox{Perm}(G)$, and let $\mbox{NHol}(G)$ denote its normalizer. The quotient $T(G) = \mbox{NHol}(G)/\mbox{Hol}(G)$ has been computed for various families of groups $G$, and in most of the known cases, it turns out to be elementary $2$-abelian, except for two groups of order $16$ and some groups of odd prime power order and nilpotency class two. In this paper, we shall show that $T(G)$ is elementary $2$-abelian for all finite groups $G$ of squaref…
A group is called capable if it is a central factor group. We consider the capability of finite groups of class two and exponent $p$, $p$ an odd prime. We restate the problem of capability as a problem about linear transformations, which may be checked explicitly for any specific instance of the problem. We use this restatement to derive some known results, and prove new ones. Among them, we reduce the general problem to an oft-considered special case, and prove that a 3-generated group of class 2 and exponent $p$ is either cyclic or capable.
In this paper, we study the superscharacter theories of elementary abelian $p$-groups of order $p^2$. We show that the supercharacter theories that arise from the direct product construction and the $\ast$-product construction can be obtained from automorphisms. We also prove that any supercharacter theory of an elementary abelian $p$-group of order $p^2$ that has a nonidentity superclass of size $1$ or a nonprincipal linear supercharacter must come from either a $\ast$-product or a direct product. Although we are unable to prove results for general primes, we do compute all of the supercharac…
We show that if $G$ is any $p$-group of class at most two and exponent $p$, then there exist groups $G_1$ and $G_2$ of class two and exponent $p$ that contain $G$, neither of which can be expressed as a central product, and with $G_1$ capable and $G_2$ not capable. We provide upper bounds for ${\rm rank}(G_i^{\rm ab})$ in terms of ${\rm rank}(G^{\rm ab})$ in each case.
We consider the capability of $p$-groups of class two and odd prime exponent. The question of capability is shown to be equivalent to a statement about vector spaces and linear transformations, and using the equivalence we give proofs of some old results and several new ones. In particular, we establish a number of new necessary and new sufficient conditions for capability, including a sufficient condition based only on the ranks of $G/Z(G)$ and $[G,G]$. Finally, we characterise the capable groups among the 5-generated groups in this class.
We give a complete list of all the 70 class two groups of exponent p (p>2) and order p^k for k<9. For each of these groups the number of conjugacy classes is a polynomial in p, and the order of the automorphism group is a polynomial in p. In contrast, Marcus du Sautoy and Michael Vaughan-Lee have given an example of a class two group of exponent p and order p^9 for which neither the number of conjugacy classes, nor the order of the automorphism group is polynomial on residue classes (PORC).
Suppose $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of prime characteristic $p$ and $E$ is a finite subgroup of the additive group $(\mathbb{F},+)$. Then $E$ is an elementary abelian $p$-group. We consider two such subgroups, say $E$ and $E'$, to be equivalent if there is an $α\in\mathbb{F}^*:=\mathbb{F}\setminus\{0\}$ such that $E=αE'$. In this paper we show that rational functions can be used to distinguish equivalence classes of subgroups and, for subgroups of prime rank or rank less than twelve, we give explicit finite sets of separating invariants.
In this paper, we show that the group $\mathbb{Z}_p^5$ is a DCI-group for any odd prime $p,$ that is, two Cayley digraphs Cay$(\mathbb{Z}_p^5,S)$ and Cay$(\mathbb{Z}_p^5,T)$ are isomorphic if and only if $S=T^φ$ for some automorphism $φ$ of the group $\mathbb{Z}_p^5$.
We study the free metabelian group $M(2,n)$ of prime power exponent $n$ on two generators by means of invariants $M(2,n)'\to \mathbb{Z}_n$ that we construct from colorings of the squares in the integer grid $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{Z} \cup \mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{R}$. In particular we improve bounds found by M.F. Newman for the order of $M(2,2^k)$. We study identities in $M(2,n)$, which give information about identities in the Burnside group $B(2,n)$ and the restricted Burnside group $R(2,n)$.
