Materials with spin-momentum locked surface or interface states provide an interesting playground for studying physics and application of charge-spin current conversion. To characterize their non-equilibrium magnetic and transport properties in the presence of a time-dependent external magnetic field and a spin injection from a contact, we introduce three macroscopic variables: a vectorial helical magnetization, a scaler helical magnetization, and the conventional magnetization. We derive a set of closed dynamic equations for these variables by using the spinor Boltzmann approach with the collision terms consistent with the symmetry of spin-momentum locked states. By solving the dynamic equations, we predict several intriguing magnetic and transport phenomena which are experimentally accessible, including magnetic resonant response to an AC applied magnetic field, charge-spin conversion, and spin current induced by the dynamics of helical magnetization.

The surface of a 3D topological insulator is a new type of two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The exactly quantized magneto-optical or axionic response of a 3D topological insulator is a direct result of the Berry's phase protected spin-momentum locked states on its surface. The search for novel magnetic quantum phases, phenomena and functional materials has been guided by relativistic magnetic-symmetry groups in coupled spin and real space from the dawn of the field in 1950s to the modern era of topological matter. However, the magnetic groups cannot disentangle non-relativistic phases and effects, such as the recently reported unconventional spin physics in collinear antiferromagnets from the typically weak relativistic spin-orbit coupling phenomena. Here we discover that more general spin symmetries in decoupled spin and crystal space categorize non-relativisti…
The propagation of electrons and photons can respectively have the spin-momentum locking effect which correlates the spin with the linear momentum. For the surface electrons in three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs), their spin is locked to the transport direction. For photons in optical fibers and photonic waveguides, they carry transverse spin angular momentum (SAM) which is also locked to the propagation direction. A direct connection between the electronic and the optical spins occurs in TIs with lifted spin degeneracy, which leads to spin-dependent selection rules of optical trans…
Spin-momentum helical locking is one of the most important properties of the nontrivial topological surface states (TSS) in 3D topological insulators (TI). It underlies the iconic topological protection (suppressing elastic backscattering) of TSS and is foundational to many exotic physics (eg., majorana fermions) and device applications (eg., spintronics) predicted for TIs. Based on this spin-momentum locking, a current flowing on the surface of a TI would be spin-polarized in a characteristic in-plane direction perpendicular to the current, and the spin-polarization would reverse when the cur…
We perform spin-resolved and spin-integrated angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on a series of compositions in the BiTl(S1-xSex)2 system, focusing on x-values in the vicinity of the critical point for the topological phase transition (the band inversion composition). We observe quasi two dimensional (2D) states on the outer boundary of the bulk electronic bands in the trivial side (non-inverted regime) of the transition. Systematic spin-sensitive measurements reveal that the observed 2D states are spin-momentum locked, whose spin texture resembles the helical spin texture o…
Spin-momentum locking in protected surface states enables efficient electrical detection of magnon decay at a magnetic-insulator/topological-insulator heterojunction. Here we demonstrate this property using the spin Seebeck effect, i.e. measuring the transverse thermoelectric response to a temperature gradient across a thin film of yttrium iron garnet, an insulating ferrimagnet, and forming a heterojunction with (BixSb1-x)2Te3, a topological insulator. The non-equilibrium magnon population established at the interface can decay in part by interactions of magnons with electrons near the Fermi e…

The spin-orbit (SO) interaction couples electron spin and momentum via a relativistic, effective magnetic field. While conveniently facilitating coherent spin manipulation in semiconductors, the SO interaction also inherently causes spin relaxation. A unique situation arises when the Rashba and Dresselhaus SO fields are matched, strongly protecting spins from relaxation, as recently demonstrated. Quantum computation and spintronics devices such as the paradigmatic spin transistor could vastly benefit if such spin protection could be expanded from a single point into a broad range accessible wi…
The momentum transport in ultraclean bilayer graphene is characterized by the viscous transport. In quantizing magnetic field the momentum current passes through the guiding centers of cyclotron orbits. In this study we derive the quantized Hall viscosity of bilayer graphene that is the next topological feature after the quantum Hall effect. This can be detected in the non-local magnetoresistivity measurements that varies with the quantized steps of magnetoresistivity.
We study numerically the influence of momentum-conserving dephasing on the transport in a disordered chain of scatterers. Loss of phase memory is caused by coupling the transport channels to dephasing reservoirs. In contrast to previously used models, the dephasing reservoirs are linked to the transport channels between the scatterers, and momentum conserving dephasing can be investigated. Our setup provides a model for nanosystems exhibiting conductance quantization at higher temperatures in spite of the presence of phononic interaction. We are able to confirm numerically some theoretical pre…
Recent experiments by Gutiérrez $\textit{et al.}$ [Nature Phys. $\textbf{12}$, 950 (2016)] on a graphene-copper superlattice have revealed an unusual Kekulé bond texture in the honeycomb lattice --- a Y-shaped modulation of weak and strong bonds with a wave vector connecting two Dirac points. We show that this so-called "Kek-Y" texture produces two species of massless Dirac fermions, with valley isospin locked parallel or antiparallel to the direction of motion. In a magnetic field $B$ the valley degeneracy of the $B$-dependent Landau levels is removed by the valley-momentum locking --- but a …
We study theoretically the electrical transport between aligned carbon nanotubes in nanotube ropes, and between shells in multiwall carbon nanotubes. We focus on transport between two metallic nanotubes (or shells) of different chiralities with mismatched Fermi momenta and incommensurate periodicities. We perform numerical calculations of the transport properties of such systems within a tight-binding formalism. For clean (disorder-free) nanotubes the intertube transport is strongly suppressed as a result of momentum conservation. For clean nanotubes, the intertube transport is typically domin…
We design and implement a three dimensional acoustic Weyl metamaterial hosting robust modes bound to a one-dimensional topological lattice defect. The modes are related to topological features of the bulk bands, and carry nonzero orbital angular momentum locked to the direction of propagation. They span a range of axial wavenumbers defined by the projections of two bulk Weyl points to a one-dimensional subspace, in a manner analogous to the formation of Fermi arc surface states. We use acoustic experiments to probe their dispersion relation, orbital angular momentum locked waveguiding, and abi…
We present experimental results and a model to solve the problem of "in-phase Coulomb peaks" observed in transport through a quantum dot. In a marginal region between Coulomb-blockade and open-dot, we have observed Fano-type interference through two energy levels inside the dot, which manifest themselves in two overlapped Coulomb-diamond-like structures in the excitation spectrum. One of the two levels is strongly coupled to the leads and the phase of traversing electrons is locked to it. We have detected the phase change at the vertices and the centers of the larger diamonds through the sign …
The spin-momentum locked nature of the robust surface states of three dimensional topological insulators (3D TI) make them promising candidates for spintronics applications. Surface potentials which respect time reversal symmetry can exist at the surface between a 3D TI and the trivial vacuum. These potentials can distort the spin texture of the surface states while retaining their gapless nature. In this work, the effect of all such surface potentials on the spin textures is studied. Since, a tunnel magnetoresistance signal carries the information of the spin texture, it is proposed that spin…
I discuss heat and momentum transport in a mesoscopic film of $^3$He, confined by rough walls in the normal Fermi liquid state. Inelastic binary quasiparticle scattering mediated by elastic scattering from the surface roughness gives rise to a coherent "mixed"scattering channel that drives anomalous transport over a range of temperature. I calculate the thermal conductivity and viscosity of the film in this regime and derive these in terms of the film thickness and autocorrelation function of the surface roughness, which enters the formulation as an independent input. This calculation can be u…
The Quantum Spin Hall insulator is characterized by the presence of gapless helical edge states where the spin of the charge carriers is locked to their direction of motion. In order to probe the properties of the edge modes, we propose a design of a tunable quantum impurity realized by a local gate under an external magnetic field. Using the integrability of the impurity model, the conductance is computed for arbitrary interactions, temperatures and voltages, including the effect of Fermi liquid leads. The result can be used to infer the strength of interactions from transport experiments
Recently, orbital-textures have been found in Rashba and topological insulator (TI) surface states as a result of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we predict a $p_x/p_y$ orbital texture, in linear dispersive Dirac bands, arising at the K/K' points of $χ$-$h_0$ borophene chiral monolayer. Combining first-principles calculations with effective hamiltonians, we show that the orbital pseudospin has its direction locked with the momentum in a similar way as TIs' spin-textures. Additionally, considering a layer pseudospin degree of freedom, this lattice allows stackings of layers with equivalent…

Using the derivative expansion applied to the Wigner transform of the two - point Green function this is possible to derive the response of various nondissipative currents to the external gauge fields. The corresponding currents are proportional to the momentum space topological invariants. This allows to analyse systematically various anomalous transport phenomena including the anomalous quantum Hall effect and the chiral separation effect. We discuss the application of this methodology both to the solid state physics and to the high energy physics.
