We explore how to enable machines to model 3D shapes like human modelers using deep reinforcement learning (RL). In 3D modeling software like Maya, a modeler usually creates a mesh model in two steps: (1) approximating the shape using a set of primitives; (2) editing the meshes of the primitives to create detailed geometry. Inspired by such artist-based modeling, we propose a two-step neural framework based on RL to learn 3D modeling policies. By taking actions and collecting rewards in an interactive environment, the agents first learn to parse a target shape into primitives and then to edit the geometry. To effectively train the modeling agents, we introduce a novel training algorithm that combines heuristic policy, imitation learning and reinforcement learning. Our experiments show that the agents can learn good policies to produce regular and structure-aware mesh models, which demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed RL framework.
To encourage AI agents to conduct meaningful Visual Dialogue (VD), the use of Reinforcement Learning has been proven potential. In Reinforcement Learning, it is crucial to represent states and assign rewards based on the action-caused transitions of states. However, the state representation in previous Visual Dialogue works uses the textual information only and its transitions are implicit. In this paper, we propose Explicit Concerning States (ECS) to represent what visual contents are concerned at each round and what have been concerned throughout the Visual Dialogue. ECS is modeled from mult…

Current methods for 3D object reconstruction from a set of planar cross-sections still struggle to capture detailed topology or require a considerable number of cross-sections. In this paper, we present, to the best of our knowledge the first 3D shape reconstruction network to solve this task which additionally uses orthographic projections of the shape. Our method is based on applying a Reinforcement Learning algorithm to learn how to effectively parse the shape using a trial-and-error scheme relying on scalar rewards. This method cuts a part of a 3D shape in each step which is then approxima…

We propose a novel Deformed Implicit Field (DIF) representation for modeling 3D shapes of a category and generating dense correspondences among shapes. With DIF, a 3D shape is represented by a template implicit field shared across the category, together with a 3D deformation field and a correction field dedicated for each shape instance. Shape correspondences can be easily established using their deformation fields. Our neural network, dubbed DIF-Net, jointly learns a shape latent space and these fields for 3D objects belonging to a category without using any correspondence or part label. The …

We present a novel neural network architecture, termed Decomposer-Composer, for semantic structure-aware 3D shape modeling. Our method utilizes an auto-encoder-based pipeline, and produces a novel factorized shape embedding space, where the semantic structure of the shape collection translates into a data-dependent sub-space factorization, and where shape composition and decomposition become simple linear operations on the embedding coordinates. We further propose to model shape assembly using an explicit learned part deformation module, which utilizes a 3D spatial transformer network to perfo…

This paper presents a novel Subject-dependent Deep Aging Path (SDAP), which inherits the merits of both Generative Probabilistic Modeling and Inverse Reinforcement Learning to model the facial structures and the longitudinal face aging process of a given subject. The proposed SDAP is optimized using tractable log-likelihood objective functions with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) based deep feature extraction. Instead of applying a fixed aging development path for all input faces and subjects, SDAP is able to provide the most appropriate aging development path for individual subject that …
We present RL-GAN-Net, where a reinforcement learning (RL) agent provides fast and robust control of a generative adversarial network (GAN). Our framework is applied to point cloud shape completion that converts noisy, partial point cloud data into a high-fidelity completed shape by controlling the GAN. While a GAN is unstable and hard to train, we circumvent the problem by (1) training the GAN on the latent space representation whose dimension is reduced compared to the raw point cloud input and (2) using an RL agent to find the correct input to the GAN to generate the latent space representa…

We present a neural optimization model trained with reinforcement learning to solve the coordinate ordering problem for sets of star glyphs. Given a set of star glyphs associated to multiple class labels, we propose to use shape context descriptors to measure the perceptual distance between pairs of glyphs, and use the derived silhouette coefficient to measure the perception of class separability within the entire set. To find the optimal coordinate order for the given set, we train a neural network using reinforcement learning to reward orderings with high silhouette coefficients. The network…
We demonstrate the use of similarity domains (SDs) for shape modeling and skeleton extraction. SDs are recently proposed and they can be utilized in a neural network framework to help us analyze shapes. SDs are modeled with radial basis functions with varying shape parameters in Similarity Domains Networks (SDNs). In this paper, we demonstrate how using SDN can first help us model a pixel-based image in terms of SDs and then demonstrate how those learned SDs can be used to extract the skeleton of a shape.

Statistical shape modeling aims at capturing shape variations of an anatomical structure that occur within a given population. Shape models are employed in many tasks, such as shape reconstruction and image segmentation, but also shape generation and classification. Existing shape priors either require dense correspondence between training examples or lack robustness and topological guarantees. We present FlowSSM, a novel shape modeling approach that learns shape variability without requiring dense correspondence between training instances. It relies on a hierarchy of continuous deformation fl…

There is increasing evidence on the importance of brain morphology in predicting and classifying mental disorders. However, the vast majority of current shape approaches rely heavily on vertex-wise analysis that may not successfully capture complexities of subcortical structures. Additionally, the past works do not include interactions between these structures and exposure factors. Predictive modeling with such interactions is of paramount interest in heterogeneous mental disorders such as PTSD, where trauma exposure interacts with brain shape changes to influence behavior. We propose a compre…
We advocate the use of implicit fields for learning generative models of shapes and introduce an implicit field decoder, called IM-NET, for shape generation, aimed at improving the visual quality of the generated shapes. An implicit field assigns a value to each point in 3D space, so that a shape can be extracted as an iso-surface. IM-NET is trained to perform this assignment by means of a binary classifier. Specifically, it takes a point coordinate, along with a feature vector encoding a shape, and outputs a value which indicates whether the point is outside the shape or not. By replacing con…

Clinical investigations of anatomy's structural changes over time could greatly benefit from population-level quantification of shape, or spatiotemporal statistic shape modeling (SSM). Such a tool enables characterizing patient organ cycles or disease progression in relation to a cohort of interest. Constructing shape models requires establishing a quantitative shape representation (e.g., corresponding landmarks). Particle-based shape modeling (PSM) is a data-driven SSM approach that captures population-level shape variations by optimizing landmark placement. However, it assumes cross-sectiona…

In this paper, we proposed and validated a fully automatic pipeline for hippocampal surface generation via 3D U-net coupled with active shape modeling (ASM). Principally, the proposed pipeline consisted of three steps. In the beginning, for each magnetic resonance image, a 3D U-net was employed to obtain the automatic hippocampus segmentation at each hemisphere. Secondly, ASM was performed on a group of pre-obtained template surfaces to generate mean shape and shape variation parameters through principal component analysis. Ultimately, hybrid particle swarm optimization was utilized to search …
