We investigate the second-order gravitational scalar perturbations for a barotropic fluid. We derive the effective energy-momentum tensor described by the quadratic terms of the gravitational and the matter perturbations. We show that the second-order effective energy-momentum tensor is gauge dependent. We impose three gauge conditions (longitudinal, spatially-flat, and comoving gauges) for dust and radiation. The resulting energy-momentum tensor is described only by a gauge invariant variable, but the functional form depends on the gauge choice. In the matter-dominated epoch with dust-like fluid background, the second-order effective energy density and pressure of the perturbations evolve as 1/a^2 in all three gauge choices, like the curvature density of the Universe, but they do not provide the correct equation of state. The value of this parameter depends also on the gauge choice. In the radiation-dominated epoch, the perturbations in the short-wave limit behave in the same way as the radiation-like fluid in the longitudinal and the spatially-flat gauges. However, they behave in a different way in the comoving gauge. As a whole, we conclude that the second-order effective energy-momentum tensor of the scalar perturbation is strictly gauge dependent.
In this work we explore the consequences that a non-minimal coupling between geometry and matter can have on the dynamics of perfect fluids. It is argued that the presence of a static, axially symmetric pressureless fluid does not imply a Minkowski space-time like as is in General Relativity. This feature can be atributed to a pressure mimicking mechanism related to the non-minimal coupling. The case of a spherically symmetric black hole surrounded by fluid matter is analyzed, and it is shown that under equilibrium conditions the total fluid mass is about twice that of the black hole. Finally,…
In this paper we show that the on-shell Lagrangian of a perfect fluid depends on microscopic properties of the fluid, giving specific examples of perfect fluids with different on-shell Lagrangians but with the same energy-momentum tensor. We demonstrate that if the fluid is constituted by localized concentrations of energy with fixed rest mass and structure (solitons) then the average on-shell Lagrangian of a perfect fluid is given by ${\mathcal L}_m=T$, where $T$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. We show that our results have profound implications for theories of gravity where the m…
We show that an n-dimensional generalized Robertson-Walker (GRW) space-time with divergence-free conformal curvature tensor exhibits a perfect fluid stress-energy tensor for any f(R) gravity model. Furthermore we prove that a conformally flat GRW space-time is still a perfect fluid in both f(R) and quadratic gravity where other curvature invariants are considered.
The Cauchy problem for metric-affine f(R)-gravity `a la Palatini and with torsion, in presence of perfect fluid matter acting as source, is discussed following the well-known Bruhat prescriptions for General Relativity. The problem results well-formulated and well-posed when the perfect-fluid form of the stress-energy tensor is preserved under conformal transformations. The key role of conservation laws in Jordan and in Einstein frame is also discussed.
For the description of the early inflation, and acceleration expansion of the Universe, compatible with observational data, the 5D noncompact Kaluza--Klein cosmology is investigated. It is proposed that the 5D space is filled with a null perfect fluid, resulting a perfect fluid in 4D universe, plus one along the fifth dimension. By analyzing the reduced field equations for flat FRW model, we show the early inflationary behavior and current acceleration of the universe.
In an $n$-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, it is rigorously shown that any analytical theory of gravity $f(R,{\cal G})$, where $R$ is the curvature scalar and $\cal G$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant, can be associated to a perfect-fluid stress-energy tensor. In this perspective, dark components of the cosmological Hubble flow can be geometrically interpreted.
A main issue in cosmology and astrophysics is whether the dark sector phenomenology originates from particle physics, then requiring the detection of new fundamental components, or it can be addressed by modifying General Relativity. Extended Theories of Gravity are possible candidates aimed in framing dark energy and dark matter in a comprehensive geometric view. Considering the concept of perfect scalars, we show that the field equations of such theories naturally contain perfect fluid terms. Specific examples are developed for the Friedman-Lemaître-Roberson-Walker metric.
We develop a field theory description of non-dissipative string fluids and construct an explicit mapping between field theory degrees of freedom and hydrodynamic variables. The theory generalizes both a perfect particle fluid and pressureless string fluid to what we call a perfect string fluid. Ideal magnetohydrodynamics is shown to be an example of the perfect string fluid whose equations of motion can be obtained from a particular choice of the Lagrangian. The Lagrangian framework suggests a straightforward extension of the perfect string fluid to more general anisotropic fluids describing h…
We prove that in Robertson-Walker space-times (and in generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes of dimension greater than 3 with divergence-free Weyl tensor) all higher-order gravitational corrections of the Hilbert-Einstein Lagrangian density $F(R,\square R, ... , \square^k R)$ have the form of perfect fluids in the field equations. This statement definitively allows to deal with dark energy fluids as curvature effects.
We investigate background metrics for 2+1-dimensional holographic theories where the equilibrium solution behaves as a perfect fluid, and admits thus a thermodynamic description. We introduce stationary perfect-Cotton geometries, where the Cotton--York tensor takes the form of the energy--momentum tensor of a perfect fluid, i.e. they are of Petrov type D_t. Fluids in equilibrium in such boundary geometries have non-trivial vorticity. The corresponding bulk can be exactly reconstructed to obtain 3+1-dimensional stationary black-hole solutions with no naked singularities for appropriate values o…
We show the first simple, systematic and direct approach to decoupling gravitational sources in general relativity. As a direct application, a robust and simple way to generate anisotropic solutions for self-gravitating systems from perfect fluid solutions is presented.
We revisit the analogy between a minimally coupled scalar field in general relativity and a perfect fluid, correcting previous identifications of effective temperature and chemical potential. This provides a useful complementary picture for the first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity, paving the way for the Einstein frame formulation (which eluded previous attempts) and raises interesting questions to further develop the analogy.
Using a framework based on the 1+3 formalism we carry out a study on axially and reflection symmetric perfect and geodesic fluids, looking for possible models of sources radiating gravitational waves. Therefore, the fluid should be necessarily shearing, for otherwise the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor vanishes, leading to a vanishing of the super-Poynting vector. However, for the family of perfect, geodesic fluids considered here, it appears that all possible cases reduce to conformally flat, shear--free, vorticity-free, fluids, i.e Friedmann-Roberston-Walker. The super-Poynting vector vanis…
In this paper we consider the flat FRW cosmology with a scalar field coupled with the metric along with generalized Chaplygin gas and perfect fluid comprising the matter sector. We use the Schutz's formalism to deal with the generalized Chaplygin gas sector. The full theory is then quantized canonically using the Wheeler-DeWitt Hamiltonian formalism. We then solve the WD equation with appropriate boundary conditions. Then by defining a proper completeness relation for the self-adjointness of the WD equation we arrive at the wave packet for the universe. It is observed that the peak in the prob…
We study spherically-symmetric solutions in Massive Gravity generated by matter sources with polytropic equation of state. We concentrate in the non-perturbative regime where the mass term non-linearities are important, and present the main features of the solutions.
We analyze the interpretation of the spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions that admit a flat synchronization orthogonal to the fluid flow as a thermodynamic perfect fluid in local thermal equilibrium. The ideal gas sonic condition is examined for this family of metrics, and the macroscopic conditions for physical reality are accurately tested for some specific solutions.
According to maximum entropy principle, it has been proved that the gravitational field equations could be derived by the extrema of total entropy for perfect fluid, which implies that thermodynamic relations contain information of gravity. In this manuscript, we obtain a criterion for thermodynamical stability of an adiabatic, self-gravitating perfect fluid system by the second variation of total entropy. We show, for Einstein's gravity with spherical symmetry spacetime, that the criterion is consistent with that for dynamical stability derived by Chandrasekhar and Wald. We also find that the…
We study the classical and quantum models of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology, coupled to a perfect fluid, in the context of the $f(R)$ gravity. Using the Schutz' representation for the perfect fluid, we show that, under a particular gauge choice, it may lead to the identification of a time-parameter for the corresponding dynamical system. Moreover, this formalism gives rise to a Schrödinger-Wheeler-DeWitt (SWD) equation for the quantum-mechanical description of the model under consideration, the eigenfunctions of which can be used to construct the wavefunction of the Universe. In …
A method to describe exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell field equations in terms of relativistic thin disks constituted by two perfect charged fluids is presented. Describing the surface of the disk as a single charged fluid we find explicit expressions for the rest energies, the pressures and the electric charge densities of the two fluids. An explicit example is given. The particular case of the thin disks composed by two charged perfect fluids with barotropic equation of state is also presented.
We consider various forms of action allowing us to describe a perfect fluid in the framework of General Relativity. First we consider a potential motion without pressure. Starting from an action in terms of the current density vector built similarly to the action of a single particle, we build a series of equivalent actions through various changes of variables. The results are then generalized to the cases of motion with vorticity and the presence of pressure. The obtained forms of action are compared to the previously known variants. We discuss the possibilities to use the obtained results to…
We give a variational formulation of perfect fluids on a general pseudoriemannian manifold by variating tangent fields according the flux produced by them. In this approach no constraints are needed. As a result, Euler and continuity equations are obtained quite directly.
I introduce a method to obtain the stress-energy tensor of the perfect fluid by adding a suitable term to the Einstein-Hilbert action. Variation should be understood with respect to the metric.
Streamlines of a relativistic perfect isentropic fluid are geodesics of a Riemannian space whose metric is defined by enthalpy of the fluid. This fact simplifies the solution of some problems, as is also of interest from the point of view of fundamental physics.
We explore the symmetry group of the pressure isotropy condition in isotropic coordinates finding a rich structure. We work out some specific examples.
The article is devoted to cosmology. It deals with homogeneous anisotropic cosmological models. Scale factors have been evaluated for the multicomponent models with perfect fluid, taking account of its expansion, rotation and shear. The cosmological fluid components are as follows: phantom matter, de Sitter vacuum, domain walls, strings, dust, radiation, perfect gas, stiff matter and ekpyrotic matter. The scale factor dependences on the equation of state and kinematic invariants of the perfect fluid have been analysed. The paper is aimed at finding exact solutions of Friedmann and Raychaudhuri…
