Primordial black holes formed in an early post-inflation matter-dominated epoch during preheating provide a novel pathway for a source of the dark matter that utilizes known physics in combination with plausible speculations about the role of quantum gravity. Two cases are considered here: survival of Planck-scale relics and an early universe accretion scenario for formation of primordial black holes of asteroid-scale masses.
Within the framework that primordial black holes are formed by the direct gravitational collapse of large primordial density perturbations in the radiation dominated stage, we derive the threshold of the density contrast for the formation of rotating primordial black holes based on the simple Jeans criterion. It is found that the threshold value increases in proportion to the square of the angular momentum. We then apply the recently refined analysis on the formation threshold for non-rotating black holes to the case of rotating black holes, and contrast the derived threshold with the former. …
We estimate the spin distribution of primordial black holes based on the recent study of the critical phenomena in the gravitational collapse of a rotating radiation fluid. We find that primordial black holes are mostly slowly rotating.
Primordial Black Holes evaporate due to Hawking radiation. We find that the evaporation time of primordial black holes increase when accretion of radiation is included. Thus depending on accretion efficiency more and more number of primordial black holes are existing today, which strengthens the idea that the primordial black holes are the proper candidate for dark matter.
We consider the evolution of primordial black holes by including non-stationarity in their formation process and accretion of radiation in Brans-Dicke theory. Specifically, we focus on how $η$, the fraction of the horizon mass the black hole comprises capturing nonstationarity, affects the lifetimes of these primordial black holes. Our calculation reveals that the primordial black hole dynamics is controlled by the product $fη$ where $f$ is the accretion efficiency. We also estimate the impact of $η$ through $fη$ on the primordial black holes' initial mass fraction constraint obtained from the…
The observational data of primordial black holes and scalar-induced gravitational waves can constrain the primordial curvature perturbation at small scales. We parameterize the primordial curvature perturbation by a broken power law form and find that it is consistent with many inflation models that can produce primordial black holes, such as nonminimal derivative coupling inflation, scalar-tensor inflation, Gauss-Bonnet inflation, and K/G inflation. The constraints from primordial black holes on the primordial curvature power spectrum with the broken power law form are obtained, where the fra…
In this work, we study the evolution of Primordial Black Holes within the context of Loop Quantum Gravity. First we calculate the scale factor and energy density of the universe for different cosmic era and then taking these as inputs we study evolution of primordial black holes. From our estimation it is found that accretion of radiation does not affect evolution of primordial black holes in loop quantum gravity even though a larger number of primordial black holes may form in early universe in comparison with Einstein's or scalar-tensor theories.
A mechanism for generating primordial black-hole mass spectra with many spikes is proposed and investigated. This mechanism relies on the choice of non-Bunch-Davies vacua, these leading to oscillatory features in the inflationary power spectrum. This in turn generates oscillations in the primordial black-hole mass function with exponentially enhanced spikes. This ``multimodal'' effect is demonstrated for most of the well-studied models of primordial black-hole formation.
We reinvestigate gravitational ellipsoidal collapse with special focus on its impact on primordial black-hole formation. For a generic model we demonstrate that the abundance and energy density of the produced primordial black holes will be significantly decreased when the non-sphericity of the overdensities is taken into account.
Primordial black holes and secondary gravitational waves can be used to probe the small scale physics at very early time. For secondary gravitational waves produced after the horizon reentry, we derive an analytical formula for the time integral of the source and analytical behavior of the time dependence of the energy density of induced gravitational waves is obtained. By proposing a piecewise power law parametrization for the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations, we use the observational constraints on primordial black hole dark matter to obtain an upper bound on the power sp…
Bulk of various astronomical observations of black holes suggest that virtually all observed black holes can be of primordial origin. A modified mechanism of the primordial black hole formation is described. A universal log-normal mass spectrum with a mean mass of around $\sim 10 M_\odot$ predicted by this mechanism is strongly confirmed by the LIGO/Virgo observations of gravitational waves from coalescing binary black holes.
We consider cosmological evolution in Brans-Dicke theory with a population of primordial black holes. Hawking radiation from the primordial black holes impacts various astrophysical processes during the evolution of the Universe. The accretion of radiation by the black holes in the radiation dominated era may be effective in imparting them a longer lifetime. We present a detailed study of how this affects various standard astrophysical constraints coming from the evaporation of primordial black holes. We analyze constraints from the present density of the Universe, the present photon spectrum,…
We propose a novel method to probe primordial gravitational waves by means of primordial black holes (PBHs). When the amplitude of primordial tensor perturbations on comoving scales much smaller than those relevant to Cosmic Microwave Background is very large, it induces scalar perturbations due to second-order effects substantially. If the amplitude of resultant scalar perturbations becomes too large, then PBHs are overproduced to a level that is inconsistent with a variety of existing observations constraining their abundance. This leads to upper bounds on the amplitude of initial tensor per…
The effect of large quantum fluctuations on primordial black-hole formation during an inflationary phase along a plateau is investigated. By using techniques of stochastic inflation in combination with replica field theory and the Feynman-Jensen variational method, it is non-perturbatively demonstrated that the abundance of primordial black holes is amplified by several orders of magnitude as compared to the classical computation.
Primordial black holes in the solar mass range are a possibly significant component of dark matter. We show how an argument relating the deflection of light by such black holes in the density spike likely to exist around the M87 supermassive black hole, combined with the high resolution observations of the EHT collaboration, can lead to a strong limits on the primordial black hole mass fraction in an astrophysically relevant mass range. The results depend on the model assumed for the dark matter spike and suggest the interest of further understanding of such spikes as well as further high reso…
Certain inflationary models as well as realisations of phase transitions in the early Universe predict the formation of primordial black holes. For most mass ranges, the fraction of matter in the form of primordial black holes is limited by many different observations on various scales. Primordial black holes are assumed to be formed when overdensities that cross the horizon have Schwarzschild radii larger than the horizon. Traditionally it was therefore assumed that primordial black-hole masses were equal to the horizon mass at their time of formation. However, detailed calculations of their …
We show that primordial black holes can be produced from the collapse of large isocurvature perturbations of the cold dark matter. We develop a novel procedure to compute the resulting black hole abundance by studying matched perturbations of matter-only universes, and we use our procedure to translate observational constraints on black hole abundances into model-independent constraints on cold dark matter isocurvature perturbations over a wide range of scales. The constraint on the typical amplitude of the primordial perturbations weakens slightly slower than linearly on small scales.
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) are appealing candidates for dark matter in the universe but are severely constrained by theoretical and observational constraints. We will focus on the Hawking evaporation limits extended to Kerr black holes. In particular, we will discuss the possibility to distinguish between black holes of primordial and of stellar origins based on the Thorne limit on their spin. We will also review the isotropic extragalactic gamma ray background constraints and show that the ``window'' in which PBHs can constitute all of the dark matter depends strongly on the PBH spin. Fina…
Two gravitational wave events, i.e. GW200105 and GW200115, were observed by the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors recently. In this work, we show that they can be explained by a scenario of primordial black hole binaries that are formed in the early Universe. The merger rate predicted by such a scenario could be consistent with the one estimated from LIGO and Virgo, even if primordial black holes constitute a fraction of cold dark matter. The required abundance of primordial black holes is compatible with the existing upper limits from microlensing, caustic crossing and cosmic microwave backgr…
Several processes in the early universe might lead to the formation of primordial black holes with different masses. These black holes would interact with the cosmic plasma through accretion and emission processes. Such interactions might have affected the dynamics of the universe and generated a considerable amount of entropy. In this paper we investigate the effects of the presence of primordial black holes on the evolution of the early universe. We adopt a two-fluid cosmological model with radiation and a primordial black hole gas. The latter is modelled with different initial mass function…
We study how the constraints on the primordial black hole density arising from the extragalactic photon background are modified in the scenario that there exist extra large spatial dimensions. We find that though the overall magnitude of the constraints is not substantially different, the mass ranges to which they apply are, and for some choices of mass it is possible for the black holes to constitute the entirety of the dark matter.
We present a comprehensive formalism for the description of primordial black hole formation in spherical symmetry based on the formalisms of Misner, Sharp, and Hernandez, which can be used to predict whether or not a black hole will form, and extract the resulting black hole mass when formation does occur. Rigorous derivations of all aspects of the formalism are provided, including a thorough investigation of appropriate initial and boundary conditions. We connect our formalism with numerous other approaches in the literature. Some implementation details for numerical code are provided. We inc…
Recent Advanced LIGO detections of binary black hole mergers have prompted multiple studies investigating the possibility that the heavy GW150914 binary system was of primordial origin, and hence could be evidence for dark matter in the form of black holes. We compute the stochastic background arising from the incoherent superposition of such primordial binary black hole systems in the universe and compare it to the similar background spectrum due to binary black hole systems of stellar origin. We investigate the possibility of detecting this background with future gravitational wave detectors…
We develop an analytic formalism for computing the merger rate of primordial black hole binaries with a general mass function by taking into account the torques by the surrounding primordial black holes and linear density perturbations. We find that $α=-(m_{i}+m_{j})^2\partial^{2} \ln {\mathcal R}(m_{i},m_{j})/\partial m_{i} \partial m_{j}=36/37$ is independent of the mass function. Moreover, the ratio of the merger rate density of primordial black hole binaries by taking into account the torques by the surrounding primordial black holes to by the nearest primordial black hole is independent o…
We study the evolution of primordail black holes by considering present universe is no more matter dominated rather vacuum energy dominated. We also consider the accretion of radiation, matter and vacuum energy during respective dominance period. In this scenario, we found that radiation accretion efficiency should be less than 0.366 and accretion rate is much larger than previous analysis by B. Nayak et al. \cite{ns}. Thus here primordial black holes live longer than previous works \cite{ns}. Again matter accretion slightly increases the mass and lifetime of primordial black holes. However, t…
Near extremal Kerr black holes are subject to the Thorne limit $a<a^*_{\rm lim}=0.998$ in the case of thin disc accretion, or some generalized version of this in other disc geometries. However any limit that differs from the thermodynamics limit $a^* < 1$ can in principle be evaded in other astrophysical configurations, and in particular if the near extremal black holes are primordial and subject to evaporation by Hawking radiation only. We derive the lower mass limit above which Hawking radiation is slow enough so that a primordial black hole with a spin initially above some generalized Thorn…
Assuming that primordial black holes compose a fraction of dark matter, some of them may accumulate at the center of galaxy and perform a prograde or retrograde orbit against the gravity pointing towards the center exerted by the central massive black hole. If the mass of primordial black holes is of the order of stellar mass or smaller, such extreme mass ratio inspirals can emit gravitational waves and form a background due to incoherent superposition of all the contributions of the Universe. We investigate the stochastic gravitational-wave background energy density spectra from the direction…
In this paper we analyze in detail a rarely discussed question of gravity wave production from evaporating primordial black holes. These black holes emit gravitons which are, at classical level, registered as gravity waves. We use the latest constraints on their abundance, and calculate the power emitted in gravitons at the time of their evaporation. We then solve the coupled system of equations that gives us the evolution of the frequency and amplitude of gravity waves during the expansion of the universe. The spectrum of gravitational waves that can be detected today depends on multiple fact…
The merger rate of primordial black holes depends on their initial clustering. In the absence of primordial non-Gaussianity correlating short and large-scales, primordial black holes are distributed à la Poisson at the time of their formation. However, primordial non-Gaussianity of the local-type may correlate primordial black holes on large-scales. We show that future experiments looking for CMB $μ$-distortion would test the hypothesis of initial primordial black hole clustering induced by local non-Gaussianity, while existing limits already show that significant non-Gaussianity is necessary …
The properties of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales are still unknown while those on large scales have been well probed by the observations of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies and the large scale structure. In this paper, we propose the reconstruction method of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales through the merger rate of binary primordial black holes, which could form from large primordial curvature perturbation on small scales.
We elaborate on the mass function of primordial black holes in the case in which the power spectrum of the curvature perturbation is broad. For the case of a broad and flat spectrum, we argue that such a mass function is peaked at the smallest primordial black mass which can be formed and possesses a tail decaying like $M^{-3/2}$, where $M$ is the mass of the primordial black hole.
Primordial black holes might comprise a significant fraction of the dark matter in the Universe and be responsible for the gravitational wave signals from black hole mergers observed by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration. The spatial clustering of primordial black holes might affect their merger rates and have a significant impact on the constraints on their masses and abundances. We provide some analytical treatment of the primordial black hole spatial clustering evolution, compare our results with some of the existing N-body numerical simulations and discuss the implications for the black hole mer…
A common mechanism to form primordial black holes in the early universe is by enhancing at small-scales the scalar perturbations generated during inflation. If these fluctuations have a large enough amplitude, they may collapse into primordial black holes upon horizon re-entry. Such primordial black holes may comprise the totality of the dark matter. We offer some considerations about the formation and clustering of primordial black holes when the scalar perturbations are characterised by a broad spectrum. Using the excursion set method, as well as the supreme statistics, we show that the clou…
As a candidate bound for the Binary Black Hole (BBH) merger events detected by LIGO/Virgo, Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) provide a useful tool to investigate the primordial curvature perturbations on small scales. Using the GWTC-1 to GWTC-3 catalogs, under the scenario that PBHs originate from large primordial curvature perturbations on small scales during inflationary epoch, we for the first time reconstruct the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales. It is found that the value of the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum is enhanced to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})…
We consider the role of secondary infall and accretion onto an initially overdense perturbation in matter-dominated eras, like the one which is likely to follow the end of inflation. We show that primordial black holes may form through post-collapse accretion, namely the accretion onto an initial overdensity whose collapse has not given rise to a primordial black hole. Accretion may be also responsible for the growth of the primordial black hole masses by orders of magnitude till the end of the matter-dominated era.
Primordial black holes can be produced by a long range attractive fifth force stronger than gravity, mediated by a light scalar field interacting with nonrelativistic "heavy" particles. As soon as the energy fraction of heavy particles reaches a threshold, the fluctuations rapidly become nonlinear. The overdensities collapse into black holes or similar screened objects, without the need for any particular feature in the spectrum of primordial density fluctuations generated during inflation. We discuss whether such primordial black holes can constitute the total dark matter component in the Uni…
We consider the constraints on the fraction of dark matter in the universe in the form of primordial black holes taking into account the crucial role of accretion which may change both their mass and mass function. We show that accretion may drastically weaken the constraints at the present epoch for primordial black holes with masses larger than a few solar masses.
Advanced LIGO's discovery of gravitational-wave events is stimulating extensive studies on the origin of binary black holes. Assuming that the gravitational-wave events can be explained by binary primordial black hole mergers, we utilize the upper limits on the stochastic gravitational-wave background given by Advanced LIGO as a new observational window to independently constrain the abundance of primordial black holes in dark matter. We show that Advanced LIGO's first observation run gives the best constraint on the primordial black hole abundance in the mass range $1 M_\odot \lesssim M_\text…
The next generation of gravitational-wave experiments, such as Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer and LISA, will test the primordial black hole scenario. We provide a forecast for the minimum testable value of the abundance of primordial black holes as a function of their masses for both the unclustered and clustered spatial distributions at formation. In particular, we show that these instruments may test abundances, relative to the dark matter, as low as $10^{-10}$.
Primordial black holes as dark matter may be generated in single-field models of inflation thanks to the enhancement at small scales of the comoving curvature perturbation. This mechanism requires leaving the slow-roll phase to enter a non-attractor phase during which the inflaton travels across a plateau and its velocity drops down exponentially. We argue that quantum diffusion has a significant impact on the primordial black hole mass fraction making the classical standard prediction not trustable.
We devise a novel mechanism and for the first time demonstrate that the Higgs model in particle physics can drive the inflation to satisfy the cosmic microwave background observations and simultaneously enhance the curvature perturbations at small scales to explain the abundance of dark matter in our universe in the form of primordial black holes. The production of primordial black holes is accompanied by the secondary gravitational waves induced by the first order Higgs fluctuations which is expected observable by space-based gravitational wave detectors. We propose possible cosmological prob…
We perform a hierarchical Bayesian analysis of the GWTC-2 catalog to investigate the mixed scenario in which the merger events are explained by black holes of both astrophysical and primordial origin. For the astrophysical scenario we adopt the phenomenological model used by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration and we include the correlation between different parameters inferred from data, the role of the spins in both the primordial and astrophysical scenarios, and the impact of accretion in the primordial scenario. Our best-fit mixed model has a strong statistical evidence relative to the single-pop…
We investigate a new mechanism to create large curvature perturbations on small scales due to parameter resonance in a single-field inflationary model with a small periodic structure upon the potential. After reentering the horizon, the amplified curvature perturbations can lead to observable primordial black holes as well as stochastic gravitational waves. The mass of primordial black holes and frequency of the induced gravitational waves depend on the model parameters. The resulted primordial black hole could constitute all dark matter or a fraction of dark matter in the universe, and corres…
Starting from a quantization relation for primordial black holes, it is shown that quantum fluctuations can play a fundamental role in determining the effective scales of self-gravitating astrophysical systems. Furthermore the Eddington-Weinberg relation between the current scale of the observed universe to the Planck constant (the standard action unit) is naturally derived. Finally, such an approach allows to recover the current value of the cosmological constant.
We show that the recent NANOGrav result can be interpreted as a stochastic gravitational wave signal associated to formation of primordial black holes from high-amplitude curvature perturbations. The indicated amplitude and power of the gravitational wave spectrum agrees well with formation of primordial seeds for supermassive black holes.
Scalar field with generalized kinetic interactions metamorphoses depending on its field value, ranging from cosmological constant to stiff matter. We show that such a scalar field can give rise to temporal enhancement of the curvature perturbation in the primordial Universe, leading to efficient production of primordial black holes while the enhancement persists. If the inflation energy scale is high, those mini-black holes evaporate by the Hawking radiation much before Big Bang nucleosynthesis and the effective reheating of the Universe is achieved by the black hole evaporation. Dominance of …
There is a growing expectation that the gravitational wave detectors will start probing the stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds in the following years. We explore the spectral shapes of gravitational waves induced to second order by scalar perturbations and presumably have been produced in the early universe. We calculate the gravitational wave spectra generated during radiation and kination eras together with the associated primordial black hole counterpart. We employ power spectra for the primordial curvature perturbation generated by $α$-attractors and nonminimal derivative coupling i…
We present a novel mechanism to generate the cosmic perturbation from evaporation of primordial black holes. A mass of a field is fluctuated if it is given by a vacuum expectation value of a light scalar field because of the quantum fluctuation during inflation. The fluctuated mass causes variations of the evaporation time of the primordial black holes. Therefore provided the primordial black holes dominate the universe when they evaporate, primordial cosmic perturbations are generated. We find that the amplitude of the large scale curvature perturbation generated in this scenario can be consi…
We study the influence of lepton flavour asymmetries on the formation and the mass spectrum of primordial black holes. We estimate the detectability of their mergers with LIGO/Virgo and show that the currently published gravitational wave events may actually be described by a primordial black hole spectrum from non-zero asymmetries. We suggest to use gravitational-wave astronomy as a novel tool to probe how lepton flavour asymmetric the Universe has been before the onset of neutrino oscillations.
