The Online Action Detection (OAD) problem needs to be revisited. Unlike traditional offline action detection approaches, where the evaluation metrics are clear and well established, in the OAD setting we find very few works and no consensus on the evaluation protocols to be used. In this work we propose to rethink the OAD scenario, clearly defining the problem itself and the main characteristics that the models which are considered online must comply with. We also introduce a novel metric: the Instantaneous Accuracy ($IA$). This new metric exhibits an \emph{online} nature and solves most of the limitations of the previous metrics. We conduct a thorough experimental evaluation on 3 challenging datasets, where the performance of various baseline methods is compared to that of the state-of-the-art. Our results confirm the problems of the previous evaluation protocols, and suggest that an IA-based protocol is more adequate to the online scenario. The baselines models and a development kit with the novel evaluation protocol are publicly available: https://github.com/gramuah/ia.
Online temporal action localization from an untrimmed video stream is a challenging problem in computer vision. It is challenging because of i) in an untrimmed video stream, more than one action instance may appear, including background scenes, and ii) in online settings, only past and current information is available. Therefore, temporal priors, such as the average action duration of training data, which have been exploited by previous action detection methods, are not suitable for this task because of the high intra-class variation in human actions. We propose a novel online action detection…

Online action detection in untrimmed videos aims to identify an action as it happens, which makes it very important for real-time applications. Previous methods rely on tedious annotations of temporal action boundaries for training, which hinders the scalability of online action detection systems. We propose WOAD, a weakly supervised framework that can be trained using only video-class labels. WOAD contains two jointly-trained modules, i.e., temporal proposal generator (TPG) and online action recognizer (OAR). Supervised by video-class labels, TPG works offline and targets at accurately mining…

We propose StartNet to address Online Detection of Action Start (ODAS) where action starts and their associated categories are detected in untrimmed, streaming videos. Previous methods aim to localize action starts by learning feature representations that can directly separate the start point from its preceding background. It is challenging due to the subtle appearance difference near the action starts and the lack of training data. Instead, StartNet decomposes ODAS into two stages: action classification (using ClsNet) and start point localization (using LocNet). ClsNet focuses on per-frame la…

We aim to tackle a novel task in action detection - Online Detection of Action Start (ODAS) in untrimmed, streaming videos. The goal of ODAS is to detect the start of an action instance, with high categorization accuracy and low detection latency. ODAS is important in many applications such as early alert generation to allow timely security or emergency response. We propose three novel methods to specifically address the challenges in training ODAS models: (1) hard negative samples generation based on Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to distinguish ambiguous background, (2) explicitly mode…

Activity detection in security videos is a difficult problem due to multiple factors such as large field of view, presence of multiple activities, varying scales and viewpoints, and its untrimmed nature. The existing research in activity detection is mainly focused on datasets, such as UCF-101, JHMDB, THUMOS, and AVA, which partially address these issues. The requirement of processing the security videos in real-time makes this even more challenging. In this work we propose Gabriella, a real-time online system to perform activity detection on untrimmed security videos. The proposed method cons…

Temporal sentence grounding (TSG) aims to identify the temporal boundary of a specific segment from an untrimmed video by a sentence query. All existing works first utilize a sparse sampling strategy to extract a fixed number of video frames and then conduct multi-modal interactions with query sentence for reasoning. However, we argue that these methods have overlooked two indispensable issues: 1) Boundary-bias: The annotated target segment generally refers to two specific frames as corresponding start and end timestamps. The video downsampling process may lose these two frames and take the ad…

Temporal action localization is an important yet challenging problem. Given a long, untrimmed video consisting of multiple action instances and complex background contents, we need not only to recognize their action categories, but also to localize the start time and end time of each instance. Many state-of-the-art systems use segment-level classifiers to select and rank proposal segments of pre-determined boundaries. However, a desirable model should move beyond segment-level and make dense predictions at a fine granularity in time to determine precise temporal boundaries. To this end, we des…

Online Temporal Action Localization (On-TAL) aims to immediately provide action instances from untrimmed streaming videos. The model is not allowed to utilize future frames and any processing techniques to modify past predictions, making On-TAL much more challenging. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective framework, termed SimOn, that learns to predict action instances using the popular Transformer architecture in an end-to-end manner. Specifically, the model takes the current frame feature as a query and a set of past context information as keys and values of the Transformer. Differ…

We present a deep-learning framework for real-time multiple spatio-temporal (S/T) action localisation, classification and early prediction. Current state-of-the-art approaches work offline and are too slow to be useful in real- world settings. To overcome their limitations we introduce two major developments. Firstly, we adopt real-time SSD (Single Shot MultiBox Detector) convolutional neural networks to regress and classify detection boxes in each video frame potentially containing an action of interest. Secondly, we design an original and efficient online algorithm to incrementally construct…
The visual inspection of aerial drone footage is an integral part of land search and rescue (SAR) operations today. Since this inspection is a slow, tedious and error-prone job for humans, we propose a novel deep learning algorithm to automate this aerial person detection (APD) task. We experiment with model architecture selection, online data augmentation, transfer learning, image tiling and several other techniques to improve the test performance of our method. We present the novel Aerial Inspection RetinaNet (AIR) algorithm as the combination of these contributions. The AIR detector demonst…

Human action recognition from well-segmented 3D skeleton data has been intensively studied and has been attracting an increasing attention. Online action detection goes one step further and is more challenging, which identifies the action type and localizes the action positions on the fly from the untrimmed stream data. In this paper, we study the problem of online action detection from streaming skeleton data. We propose a multi-task end-to-end Joint Classification-Regression Recurrent Neural Network to better explore the action type and temporal localization information. By employing a joint…

Due to balanced accuracy and speed, one-shot models which jointly learn detection and identification embeddings, have drawn great attention in multi-object tracking (MOT). However, the inherent differences and relations between detection and re-identification (ReID) are unconsciously overlooked because of treating them as two isolated tasks in the one-shot tracking paradigm. This leads to inferior performance compared with existing two-stage methods. In this paper, we first dissect the reasoning process for these two tasks, which reveals that the competition between them inevitably would destr…

Video object detection (VID) has been vigorously studied for years but almost all literature adopts a static accuracy-based evaluation, i.e., average precision (AP). From a robotic perspective, the importance of recall continuity and localization stability is equal to that of accuracy, but the AP is insufficient to reflect detectors' performance across time. In this paper, non-reference assessments are proposed for continuity and stability based on object tracklets. These temporal evaluations can serve as supplements to static AP. Further, we develop an online tracklet refinement for improving…

Video temporal action detection aims to temporally localize and recognize the action in untrimmed videos. Existing one-stage approaches mostly focus on unifying two subtasks, i.e., localization of action proposals and classification of each proposal through a fully shared backbone. However, such design of encapsulating all components of two subtasks in one single network might restrict the training by ignoring the specialized characteristic of each subtask. In this paper, we propose a novel Decoupled Single Shot temporal Action Detection (Decouple-SSAD) method to mitigate such problem by decou…
Weakly supervised temporal action localization, which aims at temporally locating action instances in untrimmed videos using only video-level class labels during training, is an important yet challenging problem in video analysis. Many current methods adopt the "localization by classification" framework: first do video classification, then locate temporal area contributing to the results most. However, this framework fails to locate the entire action instances and gives little consideration to the local context. In this paper, we present a novel architecture called Cascaded Pyramid Mining Netw…

This paper presents the baseline method proposed for the Sports Video task part of the MediaEval 2022 benchmark. This task proposes two subtasks: stroke classification from trimmed videos, and stroke detection from untrimmed videos. This baseline addresses both subtasks. We propose two types of 3D-CNN architectures to solve the two subtasks. Both 3D-CNNs use Spatio-temporal convolutions and attention mechanisms. The architectures and the training process are tailored to solve the addressed subtask. This baseline method is shared publicly online to help the participants in their investigation a…

Specifically, we fine-tune multiple action recognition models on soccer data to extract high-level semantic features, and design a transformer based temporal detection module to …
