The private quantum channel (PQC) maps any quantum state to the maximally mixed state for the discrete as well as the bosonic Gaussian quantum systems, and it has fundamental meaning on the quantum cryptographic tasks and the quantum channel capacity problems. In this paper, we introduce a notion of approximate private quantum channel ($\varepsilon$-PQC) on fermionic Gaussian systems (i.e., $\varepsilon$-FPQC), and construct its explicit form of the fermionic (Gaussian) private quantum channel. First of all, we suggest a general structure for $\varepsilon$-FPQC on the fermionic Gaussian systems with respect to the Schatten $p$-norm class, and then we give an explicit proof of the statement in the trace norm. In addition, we study that the cardinality of a set of fermionic unitary operators agrees on the $\varepsilon$-FPQC condition in the trace norm case.
We investigate the approximate quantum state sharing protocol based on random unitary channels, which is secure against any exterior or interior attackers in principle. Although the protocol leaks small information for a security parameter $ε$, the scheme still preserves its information-theoretic secrecy, and reduces some pre-shared classical secret keys for a private quantum channel between a sender and two receivers. The approximate private quantum channels constructed via random unitary channels play a crucial role in the proposed quantum state sharing protocol.
This thesis includes a survey of the results known for private and approximate private quantum channels. We develop the best known upper bound for $ε$-randomizing maps, $n+2\log(1/ε)+c$ bits required to $ε$-randomize an arbitrary $n$-qubit state by improving a scheme of Ambainis and Smith \cite{AS04} based on small bias spaces \cite{NN90, AGHP92}. We show by a probabilistic argument that in fact the great majority of random schemes using slightly more than this many bits of key are also $ε$-randomizing. We provide the first known non-trivial lower bound for $ε$-randomizing maps, and develop se…
The squashed entanglement is a fundamental entanglement measure in quantum information theory, finding application as an upper bound on the distillable secret key or distillable entanglement of a quantum state or a quantum channel. This paper simplifies proofs that the squashed entanglement is an upper bound on distillable key for finite-dimensional quantum systems and solidifies such proofs for infinite-dimensional quantum systems. More specifically, this paper establishes that the logarithm of the dimension of the key system (call it $\log_{2}K$) in an $\varepsilon$-approximate private state…
It is expected that the simulation of correlated fermions in chemistry and material science will be one of the first practical applications of quantum processors. Given the rapid evolution of quantum hardware, it is increasingly important to develop robust benchmarking techniques to gauge the capacity of quantum hardware specifically for the purpose of fermionic simulation. Here we propose using the one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model as an application benchmark for variational quantum simulations on near-term quantum devices. Since the one-dimensional Hubbard model is both strongly correlated…
We make an explicit connection between fundamental notions in quantum cryptography and quantum error correction. Error-correcting subsystems (and subspaces) for quantum channels are the key vehicles for contending with noise in physical implementations of quantum information-processing. Private subsystems (and subspaces) for quantum channels play a central role in cryptographic schemes such as quantum secret sharing and private quantum communication. We show that a subsystem is private for a channel precisely when it is correctable for a complementary channel. This result is shown to hold even…
Farhi et al. recently proposed a class of quantum algorithms, the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), for approximately solving combinatorial optimization problems. A level-p QAOA circuit consists of p steps; in each step a classical Hamiltonian, derived from the cost function, is applied followed by a mixing Hamiltonian. The 2p times for which these two Hamiltonians are applied are the parameters of the algorithm, which are to be optimized classically for the best performance. As p increases, parameter optimization becomes inefficient due to the curse of dimensionality. The suc…
We addressed the question of optimality of private quantum channels. We have shown that the Shannon entropy of the classical key necessary to securely transfer the quantum information is lower bounded by the entropy exchange of the private quantum channel $\cal E$ and von Neumann entropy of the ciphertext state $\varrho^{(0)}$. Based on these bounds we have shown that decomposition of private quantum channels into orthogonal unitaries (if exists) is optimizing the entropy. For non-ancillary single qubit PQC we have derived the optimal entropy for arbitrary set of plaintexts. In particular, we …
This paper studies privacy and secure function evaluation in communication complexity. The focus is on quantum versions of the model and on protocols with only approximate privacy against honest players. We show that the privacy loss (the minimum divulged information) in computing a function can be decreased exponentially by using quantum protocols, while the class of privately computable functions (i.e., those with privacy loss 0) is not enlarged by quantum protocols. Quantum communication combined with small information leakage on the other hand makes certain functions computable (almost) pr…
In Private Information Retrieval (PIR), a client queries an n-bit database in order to retrieve an entry of her choice, while maintaining privacy of her query value. Chor, Goldreich, Kushilevitz, and Sudan showed that, in the information-theoretical setting, a linear amount of communication is required for classical PIR protocols (and thus that the trivial protocol is optimal). This linear lower bound was shown by Nayak to hold also in the quantum setting. Here, we extend Nayak's result by considering approximate privacy, and requiring security only against "specious" adversaries, which are, i…
In this paper, we studied the approximate scattering state solutions of the Dirac equation with the hyperbolical potential with pseudospin and spin symmetries. Using a suitable short range approximation within the formalism of functional analytical method, we obtained the spin-orbit quantum numbers dependent scattering phase shifts for the spin and pseudospin symmetries. The normalization constants, lower and upper radial spinor for the two symmetries and the relativistic energy spectra were presented. Our results reveal that both the symmetry constants (C_ps and C_s) and the spin-orbit quantu…
While the objective of conventional quantum key distribution (QKD) is to secretly generate and share the classical bits concealed in the form of maximally mixed quantum states, that of private quantum channel (PQC) is to secretly transmit individual quantum states concealed in the form of maximally mixed states using shared one-time pad and it is called Gaussian private quantum channel (GPQC) when the scheme is in the regime of continuous variables. We propose a GPQC enhanced with squeezed coherent states (GPQCwSC), which is a generalization of GPQC with coherent states only (GPQCo) [Phys. Rev…

Coupling the output of a source quantum system into a target quantum system is easily treated by cascaded systems theory if the intervening quantum channel is dispersionless. However, dispersion may be important in some transfer protocols, especially in solid-state systems. In this paper we show how to generalize cascaded systems theory to treat such dispersion, provided it is not too strong. We show that the technique also works for fermionic systems with a low flux, and can be extended to treat fermionic systems with large flux. To test our theory, we calculate the effect of dispersion on th…

Learning an unknown $n$-qubit quantum state $ρ$ is a fundamental challenge in quantum computing. Information-theoretically, it is known that tomography requires exponential in $n$ many copies of $ρ$ to estimate it up to trace distance. Motivated by computational learning theory, Aaronson et al. introduced many (weaker) learning models: the PAC model of learning states (Proceedings of Royal Society A'07), shadow tomography (STOC'18) for learning "shadows" of a state, a model that also requires learners to be differentially private (STOC'19) and the online model of learning states (NeurIPS'18). …
We show that the approximate quasiorthogonality of two operator algebras is equivalent to the algebras being approximately private relative to their conditional expectation quantum channels. Our analysis is based on a characterization of the measure of orthogonality in terms of Choi matrices and Kraus operators for completely positive maps. We present examples drawn from different areas of quantum information.
Degradable quantum channels are an important class of completely positive trace-preserving maps. Among other properties, they offer a single-letter formula for the quantum and the private classical capacity and are characterized by the fact that a complementary channel can be obtained from the channel by applying a degrading channel. In this work we introduce the concept of approximate degradable channels, which satisfy this condition up to some finite $\varepsilon\geq0$. That is, there exists a degrading channel which upon composition with the channel is $\varepsilon$-close in the diamond nor…
We develop a formalism for constructing particle-number-conserving Gaussian fermionic projected entangled pair states [U(1)-GfPEPS] and show that these states can describe ground states of band insulators and gapless fermions with band touching points. When using them as variational Ansätze for two Dirac fermion systems ($π$-flux model on the square lattice and $[0,π]$-flux model on the kagome lattice), we find that the U(1)-GfPEPS, even with a relatively small bond dimension, can accurately approximate the Dirac Fermi sea ground states. By applying Gutzwiller projectors on top of these U(1)-G…
The coherent superposition of non-orthogonal fermionic Gaussian states has been shown to be an efficient approximation to the ground states of quantum impurity problems [Bravyi and Gosset,Comm. Math. Phys.,356 451 (2017)]. We present a practical approach for performing a variational calculation based on such states. Our method is based on approximate imaginary-time equations of motion that decouple the dynamics of each Gaussian state forming the ansatz. It is independent of the lattice connectivity of the model and the implementation is highly parallelizable. To benchmark our variational metho…
