This paper presents a proximal bundle variant, namely, the relaxed proximal bundle (RPB) method, for solving convex nonsmooth composite optimization problems. Like other proximal bundle variants, RPB solves a sequence of prox bundle subproblems whose objective functions are regularized composite cutting-plane models. Moreover, RPB uses a novel condition to decide whether to perform a serious or null iteration which does not necessarily yield a function value decrease. Optimal iteration-complexity bounds for RPB are established for a large range of prox stepsizes, both in the convex and strongly convex settings. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a proximal bundle variant is shown to be optimal for a large range of prox stepsizes. Finally, iteration-complexity results for RPB to obtain iterates satisfying practical termination criteria, rather than near optimal solutions, are also derived.
In this paper the degenerate preconditioned proximal point algorithm will be combined with the idea of varying preconditioners leading to the degenerate variable metric proximal point algorithm. The weak convergence of the resulting iteration will be proven. From the perspective of the degenerate variable metric proximal point algorithm, a version of the primal-dual Douglas-Rachford method with varying preconditioners will be derived and a proof of its weak convergence which is based on the previous results for the proximal point algorithm, is provided, too. After that, we derive a heuristic o…
This paper proposes a novel CTA (Combine-Then-Adapt)-based decentralized algorithm for solving convex composite optimization problems over undirected and connected networks. The local loss function in these problems contains both smooth and nonsmooth terms. The proposed algorithm uses uncoordinated network-independent constant stepsizes and only needs to approximately solve a sequence of proximal mappings, which is advantageous for solving decentralized composite optimization problems where the proximal mappings of the nonsmooth loss functions may not have analytical solutions. For the general…

Variable metric proximal gradient methods with different metric selections have been widely used in composite optimization. Combining the Barzilai-Borwein (BB) method with a diagonal selection strategy for the metric, the diagonal BB stepsize can keep low per-step computation cost as the scalar BB stepsize and better capture the local geometry of the problem. In this paper, we propose a variable metric mini-batch proximal stochastic recursive gradient algorithm VM-mSRGBB, which updates the metric using a new diagonal BB stepsize. The linear convergence of VM-mSRGBB is established for strongly …

In this paper we introduce a class of novel distributed algorithms for solving stochastic big-data convex optimization problems over directed graphs. In the addressed set-up, the dimension of the decision variable can be extremely high and the objective function can be nonsmooth. The general algorithm consists of two main steps: a consensus step and an update on a single block of the optimization variable, which is then broadcast to neighbors. Three special instances of the proposed method, involving particular problem structures, are then presented. In the general case, the convergence of a d…
We provide a proximal average with repect to a $1$-coercive Legendre function. In the sense of Bregman distance, the Bregman envelope of the proximal average is a convex combination of Bregman envelopes of individual functions. The Bregman proximal mapping of the average is a convex combination of convexified proximal mappings of individual functions. Techniques from variational analysis provide the keys for the Bregman proximal average.
We provide comparison principles for convex functions through its proximal mappings. Consequently, we prove that the norm of the proximal operator determines a convex the function up to a constant. A new characterization of Lipschitzianity in terms of the proximal operator is given.

In this note we review the iteration-complexity of a relaxed Hybrid-Proximal Extragradient Method under the large step condition. We also derive some useful proprieties of this method.
We prove an abstract form of the strong convergence of the Halpern-type and Tikhonov-type proximal point algorithms in CAT(0) spaces. In addition, we derive uniform and computable rates of metastability (in the sense of Tao) for these iterations using proof mining techniques.

We study the training of regularized neural networks where the regularizer can be non-smooth and non-convex. We propose a unified framework for stochastic proximal gradient descent, which we term ProxGen, that allows for arbitrary positive preconditioners and lower semi-continuous regularizers. Our framework encompasses standard stochastic proximal gradient methods without preconditioners as special cases, which have been extensively studied in various settings. Not only that, we present two important update rules beyond the well-known standard methods as a byproduct of our approach: (i) the f…
We introduce and investigate a new generalized convexity notion for functions called prox-convexity. The proximity operator of such a function is single-valued and firmly nonexpansive. We provide examples of (strongly) quasiconvex, weakly convex, and DC (difference of convex) functions that are prox-convex, however none of these classes fully contains the one of prox-convex functions or is included into it. We show that the classical proximal point algorithm remains convergent when the convexity of the proper lower semicontinuous function to be minimized is relaxed to prox-convexity.
