This paper presents a task and motion planning (TAMP) framework for a robotic manipulator in order to retrieve a target object from clutter. We consider a configuration of objects in a confined space with a high density so no collision-free path to the target exists. The robot must relocate some objects to retrieve the target without collisions. For fast completion of object rearrangement, the robot aims to optimize the number of pick-and-place actions which often determines the efficiency of a TAMP framework.
We propose a task planner incorporating motion planning to generate executable plans which aims to minimize the number of pick-and-place actions. In addition to fully known and static environments, our method can deal with uncertain and dynamic situations incurred by occluded views. Our method is shown to reduce the number of pick-and-place actions compared to baseline methods (e.g., at least 28.0% of reduction in a known static environment with 20 objects).
Non-prehensile manipulation methods usually use a simple end effector, e.g., a single rod, to manipulate the object. Compared to the grasping method, such an end effector is compact and flexible, and hence it can perform tasks in a constrained workspace; As a trade-off, it has relatively few degrees of freedom (DoFs), resulting in an under-actuation problem with complex constraints for planning and control. This paper proposes a new non-prehensile manipulation method for the task of object retrieval in cluttered environments, using a rod-like pusher. Specifically, a candidate trajectory in a c…

We present an algorithm that produces a plan for relocating obstacles in order to grasp a target in clutter by a robotic manipulator without collisions. We consider configurations where objects are densely populated in a constrained and confined space. Thus, there exists no collision-free path for the manipulator without relocating obstacles. Since the problem of planning for object rearrangement has shown to be NP-hard, it is difficult to perform manipulation tasks efficiently which could frequently happen in service domains (e.g., taking out a target from a shelf or a fridge). Our proposed p…
Object search -- the problem of finding a target object in a cluttered scene -- is essential to solve for many robotics applications in warehouse and household environments. However, cluttered environments entail that objects often occlude one another, making it difficult to segment objects and infer their shapes and properties. Instead of relying on the availability of CAD or other explicit models of scene objects, we augment a manipulation planner for cluttered environments with a state-of-the-art deep neural network for shape completion as well as a volumetric memory system, allowing the ro…

In order to enable robust operation in unstructured environments, robots should be able to generalize manipulation actions to novel object instances. For example, to pour and serve a drink, a robot should be able to recognize novel containers which afford the task. Most importantly, robots should be able to manipulate these novel containers to fulfill the task. To achieve this, we aim to provide robust and generalized perception of object affordances and their associated manipulation poses for reliable manipulation. In this work, we combine the notions of affordance and category-level pose, an…
Tactile sensing is an essential capability for robots that carry out dexterous manipulation tasks. While cameras, Lidars and other remote sensors can assess a scene globally and instantly, tactile sensors can reduce their measurement uncertainties and gain information about the local physical interactions between the in-contact objects and the robot, that are often not accessible via remote sensing. Tactile sensors can be grouped into two main categories: electronic tactile skins and camera based optical tactile sensors. The former are slim and can be fitted to different body parts, whereas th…

We present an algorithm determining where to relocate objects inside a cluttered and confined space while rearranging objects to retrieve a target object. Although methods that decide what to remove have been proposed, planning for the placement of removed objects inside a workspace has not received much attention. Rather, removed objects are often placed outside the workspace, which incurs additional laborious work (e.g., motion planning and execution of the manipulator and the mobile base, perception of other areas). Some other methods manipulate objects only inside the workspace but without…

6D grasping in cluttered scenes is a longstanding problem in robotic manipulation. Open-loop manipulation pipelines may fail due to inaccurate state estimation, while most end-to-end grasping methods have not yet scaled to complex scenes with obstacles. In this work, we propose a new method for end-to-end learning of 6D grasping in cluttered scenes. Our hierarchical framework learns collision-free target-driven grasping based on partial point cloud observations. We learn an embedding space to encode expert grasping plans during training and a variational autoencoder to sample diverse grasping …
Recent work in robotic manipulation focuses on object retrieval in cluttered spaces under occlusion. Nevertheless, the majority of efforts lack an analysis of conditions for the completeness of the approaches or the methods apply only when objects can be removed from the workspace. This work formulates the general, occlusion-aware manipulation task, and focuses on safe object reconstruction in a confined space with in-place rearrangement. It proposes a framework that ensures safety with completeness guarantees. Furthermore, an algorithm, which is an instantiation of this abstract framework for…
We present a probabilistic approach for building, on the fly, 3-D models of unknown objects while being manipulated by a robot. We specifically consider manipulation tasks in piles of clutter that contain previously unseen objects. Most manipulation algorithms for performing such tasks require known geometric models of the objects in order to grasp or rearrange them robustly. One of the novel aspects of this work is the utilization of a physics engine for verifying hypothesized geometries in simulation. The evidence provided by physics simulations is used in a probabilistic framework that acco…
Transparent objects are prevalent across many environments of interest for dexterous robotic manipulation. Such transparent material leads to considerable uncertainty for robot perception and manipulation, and remains an open challenge for robotics. This problem is exacerbated when multiple transparent objects cluster into piles of clutter. In household environments, for example, it is common to encounter piles of glassware in kitchens, dining rooms, and reception areas, which are essentially invisible to modern robots. We present the GlassLoc algorithm for grasp pose detection of transparent …

Latest research in industrial robotics is aimed at making human robot collaboration possible seamlessly. For this purpose, industrial robots are expected to work on the fly in unstructured and cluttered environments and hence the subject of perception driven motion planning plays a vital role. Sampling based motion planners are proven to be the most effective for such high dimensional planning problems with real time constraints. Unluckily random stochastic samplers suffer from the phenomenon of 'narrow passages' or bottleneck regions which need targeted sampling to improve their convergence r…
Robot manipulation in cluttered environments often requires complex and sequential rearrangement of multiple objects in order to achieve the desired reconfiguration of the target objects. Due to the sophisticated physical interactions involved in such scenarios, rearrangement-based manipulation is still limited to a small range of tasks and is especially vulnerable to physical uncertainties and perception noise. This paper presents a planning framework that leverages the efficiency of sampling-based planning approaches, and closes the manipulation loop by dynamically controlling the planning h…

This paper introduces Amazon Robotic Manipulation Benchmark (ARMBench), a large-scale, object-centric benchmark dataset for robotic manipulation in the context of a warehouse. Automation of operations in modern warehouses requires a robotic manipulator to deal with a wide variety of objects, unstructured storage, and dynamically changing inventory. Such settings pose challenges in perceiving the identity, physical characteristics, and state of objects during manipulation. Existing datasets for robotic manipulation consider a limited set of objects or utilize 3D models to generate synthetic sce…
Learning-based 3D object reconstruction enables single- or few-shot estimation of 3D object models. For robotics, this holds the potential to allow model-based methods to rapidly adapt to novel objects and scenes. Existing 3D reconstruction techniques optimize for visual reconstruction fidelity, typically measured by chamfer distance or voxel IOU. We find that when applied to realistic, cluttered robotics environments, these systems produce reconstructions with low physical realism, resulting in poor task performance when used for model-based control. We propose ARM, an amodal 3D reconstructio…
In this paper we address planning problems in high-dimensional hybrid configuration spaces, with a particular focus on manipulation planning problems involving many objects. We present the hybrid backward-forward (HBF) planning algorithm that uses a backward identification of constraints to direct the sampling of the infinite action space in a forward search from the initial state towards a goal configuration. The resulting planner is probabilistically complete and can effectively construct long manipulation plans requiring both prehensile and nonprehensile actions in cluttered environments.

To be useful in everyday environments, robots must be able to observe and learn about objects. Recent datasets enable progress for classifying data into known object categories; however, it is unclear how to collect reliable object data when operating in cluttered, partially-observable environments. In this paper, we address the problem of building complete 3D models for real-world objects using a robot platform, which can remove objects from clutter for better classification. Furthermore, we are able to learn entirely new object categories as they are encountered, enabling the robot to classi…

We propose a Deep Interaction Prediction Network (DIPN) for learning to predict complex interactions that ensue as a robot end-effector pushes multiple objects, whose physical properties, including size, shape, mass, and friction coefficients may be unknown a priori. DIPN "imagines" the effect of a push action and generates an accurate synthetic image of the predicted outcome. DIPN is shown to be sample efficient when trained in simulation or with a real robotic system. The high accuracy of DIPN allows direct integration with a grasp network, yielding a robotic manipulation system capable of e…

Object grasping in cluttered scenes is a widely investigated field of robot manipulation. Most of the current works focus on estimating grasp pose from point clouds based on an efficient single-shot grasp detection network. However, due to the lack of geometry awareness of the local grasping area, it may cause severe collisions and unstable grasp configurations. In this paper, we propose a two-stage grasp pose refinement network which detects grasps globally while fine-tuning low-quality grasps and filtering noisy grasps locally. Furthermore, we extend the 6-DoF grasp with an extra dimension a…
We propose GeoFusion, a SLAM-based scene estimation method for building an object-level semantic map in dense clutter. In dense clutter, objects are often in close contact and severe occlusions, which brings more false detections and noisy pose estimates from existing perception methods. To solve these problems, our key insight is to consider geometric consistency at the object level within a general SLAM framework. The geometric consistency is defined in two parts: geometric consistency score and geometric relation. The geometric consistency score describes the compatibility between object ge…
Recognizing objects in dense clutter accurately plays an important role to a wide variety of robotic manipulation tasks including grasping, packing, rearranging and many others. However, conventional visual recognition models usually miss objects because of the significant occlusion among instances and causes incorrect prediction due to the visual ambiguity with the high object crowdedness. In this paper, we propose an interactive exploration framework called Smart Explorer for recognizing all objects in dense clutters. Our Smart Explorer physically interacts with the clutter to maximize the r…

Grasping unseen objects in unconstrained, cluttered environments is an essential skill for autonomous robotic manipulation. Despite recent progress in full 6-DoF grasp learning, existing approaches often consist of complex sequential pipelines that possess several potential failure points and run-times unsuitable for closed-loop grasping. Therefore, we propose an end-to-end network that efficiently generates a distribution of 6-DoF parallel-jaw grasps directly from a depth recording of a scene. Our novel grasp representation treats 3D points of the recorded point cloud as potential grasp conta…

In this paper, we present a method to manipulate unknown objects in-hand using tactile sensing without relying on a known object model. In many cases, vision-only approaches may not be feasible; for example, due to occlusion in cluttered spaces. We address this limitation by introducing a method to reorient unknown objects using tactile sensing. It incrementally builds a probabilistic estimate of the object shape and pose during task-driven manipulation. Our approach uses Bayesian optimization to balance exploration of the global object shape with efficient task completion. To demonstrate the …

This paper focuses on vision-based pose estimation for multiple rigid objects placed in clutter, especially in cases involving occlusions and objects resting on each other. Progress has been achieved recently in object recognition given advancements in deep learning. Nevertheless, such tools typically require a large amount of training data and significant manual effort to label objects. This limits their applicability in robotics, where solutions must scale to a large number of objects and variety of conditions. Moreover, the combinatorial nature of the scenes that could arise from the placem…

Sensing contacts throughout the fingers is an essential capability for a robot to perform manipulation tasks in cluttered environments. However, existing tactile sensors either only have a flat sensing surface or a compliant tip with a limited sensing area. In this paper, we propose a novel optical tactile sensor, the GelTip, that is shaped as a finger and can sense contacts on any location of its surface. The sensor captures high-resolution and color-invariant tactile images that can be exploited to extract detailed information about the end-effector's interactions against manipulated objects…
This paper addresses the problem of mobile robot manipulation using object detection. Our approach uses detection and control as complimentary functions that learn from real-world interactions. We develop an end-to-end manipulation method based solely on detection and introduce Task-focused Few-shot Object Detection (TFOD) to learn new objects and settings. Our robot collects its own training data and automatically determines when to retrain detection to improve performance across various subtasks (e.g., grasping). Notably, detection training is low-cost, and our robot learns to manipulate new…

The fundamental challenge of planning for multi-step manipulation is to find effective and plausible action sequences that lead to the task goal. We present Cascaded Variational Inference (CAVIN) Planner, a model-based method that hierarchically generates plans by sampling from latent spaces. To facilitate planning over long time horizons, our method learns latent representations that decouple the prediction of high-level effects from the generation of low-level motions through cascaded variational inference. This enables us to model dynamics at two different levels of temporal resolutions for…
Accurate knowledge of object poses is crucial to successful robotic manipulation tasks, and yet most current approaches only work in laboratory settings. Noisy sensors and cluttered scenes interfere with accurate pose recognition, which is problematic especially when performing complex tasks involving object interactions. This is because most pose estimation algorithms focus only on estimating objects from a single frame, which means they lack continuity between frames. Further, they often do not consider resulting physical properties of the predicted scene such as intersecting objects or obje…
Manipulation in clutter requires solving complex sequential decision making problems in an environment rich with physical interactions. The transfer of motion planning solutions from simulation to the real world, in open-loop, suffers from the inherent uncertainty in modelling real world physics. We propose interleaving planning and execution in real-time, in a closed-loop setting, using a Receding Horizon Planner (RHP) for pushing manipulation in clutter. In this context, we address the problem of finding a suitable value function based heuristic for efficient planning, and for estimating the…
