Studies of thermally induced transport in nanostructures provide access to an exciting regime where fluctuations are relevant, enabling the investigation of fundamental thermodynamic concepts and the realization of thermal energy harvesters. We study a serial double quantum dot formed in an InAs/InP nanowire coupled to two electron reservoirs. By means of a specially designed local metallic joule-heater, the temperature of the phonon bath in the vicinity of the double quantum dot can be enhanced. This results in phonon-assisted transport, enabling the conversion of local heat into electrical power in a nano-sized heat engine. Simultaneously, the electron temperatures of the reservoirs are affected, resulting in conventional thermoelectric transport. By detailed modelling and experimentally tuning the interdot coupling we disentangle both effects. Furthermore, we show that phonon-assisted transport gives access to the energy of excited states. Our findings demonstrate the versatility of our design to study fluctuations and fundamental nanothermodynamics.
In this paper we introduce a simple phenomenological model of the conduction between a couple of serial or parallel quantum dots. This model is extended to arbitrary of number and to a square array of quantum dots. The local potential is computed taking into account the net charge at the quantum dot. Master equation are presented for total current and charge number N taking considering both the local potential and the local current. Interesting results are reported, namely the Negative Differential Resistance for serial quantum dots as well as resonant conductance. A paradoxical asymmetric cur…
A serial triple quantum dot (TQD) electrostatically defined in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure is characterized by using a nearby quantum point contact as charge detector. Ground state stability diagrams demonstrate control in the regime of few electrons charging the TQD. An electrostatic model is developed to determine the ground state charge configurations of the TQD. Numerical calculations are compared with experimental results. In addition, the tunneling conductance through all three quantum dots in series is studied. Quantum cellular automata processes are identified, which are where charge…
The nonlinear thermoelectric properties of serially coupled quantum dots (SCQDs) embedded in a nanowire connected to metallic electrodes are theoretically studied in the Coulomb blockade regime. We demonstrate that the electron heat current of SCQDs exhibit a direction-dependent behavior (heat rectification) in an asymmetrical structure in which the electron Coulomb interactions are significant. The phonon thermal conductivity of the nanowire is also calculated, which is used to estimate the phonon heat current. Finally, we discuss how to reduce phonon heat current to allow observation of elec…
The effect of long distance coherent tunneling (LDCT) on the charge and heat currents in serially coupled triple quantum dots (TQDs) connected to electrodes is illustrated by using a combination of the extended Hurbbard model and Anderson model. The charge and heat currents are calculated with a closed-form Landauer expression for the transmission coefficient suitable for the Coulomb blockade regime. The physical parameters including bias-dependent quantum dot energy levels, electron Coulomb interactions, and electron hopping strengths are calculated in the framework of effective mass theory f…
The transport properties of serially coupled quantum dots (SCQDs) embedded in a matrix connected to metallic electrodes are theoretically studied in the linear and nonlinear regimes. The current rectification and negative differential conductance of SCQDs under the Pauli spin blockade condition are attributed to the combination of bias-direction dependent probability weight and off-resonant energy levels yielded by the applied bias across the junctions. We observe the spin-polarization current rectification under the Zeeman effect. The maximum spin-polarization current occurs in the forward bi…
The charge transport of a serially coupled quantum dots (SCQD) connected to the metallic electrodes is theoretically investigated in the Coulomb blockade regime. A closed-form expression for the tunneling current of SCQD in the {\color{red} weak interdot hopping} limit is obtained by solving an extended two-site Hubbard model via the Green's function method. We use this expression to investigate spin current rectification, negative differential conductance, and coherent tunneling in the nonlinear response regime. The current rectification arising from the space symmetry breaking of SCQD is sup…
We study thermoelectric transport through a serial double quantum dot (DQD) coupled to two metallic leads with different thermal energies. We take into account the electron sequential and cotunneling effects via different master equation approaches. In the absence of intra- and inter-dot Coulomb interactions, a small peak in thermoelectric and heat currents is found for $E_{\rm L} \text{=} E_{\rm R}$ indicating the Coulomb blockade DQD regime, where $E_{\rm L}(E_{\rm R})$ is the energy of the state of the left(right) quantum dot. In the presence of intra- and inter-dot Coulomb interactions wit…
Quantum dots are nanoscopic systems, where carriers are confined in all three spatial directions. Such nanoscopic systems are suitable for fundamental studies of quantum mechanics and are candidates for applications such as quantum information processing. It was also proposed that linear arrangements of quantum dots could be used as quantum cascade laser. In this work we study the impact of electron-electron interactions on transport in a spinful serial triple quantum dot system weakly coupled to two leads. We find that due to electron-electron scattering processes the transport is enabled bey…
Spin-dependent transport through two coupled single-level quantum dots weakly connected to ferromagnetic leads with collinear magnetizations is considered theoretically. Transport characteristics, including the current, linear and nonlinear conductance, and tunnel magnetoresistance are calculated using the real-time diagrammatic technique in the parallel, serial, and intermediate geometries. The effects due to virtual tunneling processes between the two dots via the leads, associated with off-diagonal coupling matrix elements, are also considered. Negative differential conductance and negative…
We investigate two serially-aligned quantum dots in the molecular regime of large tunnel couplings t. A Zeeman field B is used to tune the energy difference of singlet and triplet spin configurations. Attaching this geometry to BCS source and drain leads with gap Delta and phase difference phi gives rise to an equilibrium supercurrent J. To compute J in presence of Coulomb interactions U between the dot electrons, we employ the functional renormalization group (FRG). For B\simt -- where the singlet and lowest-lying triplet spin states are equal in energy -- the current exhibits characteristics…
Based on calculations of the electronic structure of coupled multiple quantum dots, we study systemically the transport properties of the system driven by an ac electric field. We find qualitative difference between transport properties of double coupled quantum dots (DQDs) and triple quantum dots. For both symmetrical and asymmetrical configurations of coupled DQDs, the field can induce the photon-assisted Fano resonances in current-AC frequency curve in parallel DQDs, and a symmetric resonance in serial DQDs. For serially coupled triple quantum dots(STQDs), it is found that the $Λ$-type ener…
We present a novel reconfigurable metal-oxide-semiconductor multi-gate transistor that can host a quadruple quantum dot in silicon. The device consist of an industrial quadruple-gate silicon nanowire field-effect transistor. Exploiting the corner effect, we study the versatility of the structure in the single quantum dot and the serial double quantum dot regimes and extract the relevant capacitance parameters. We address the fabrication variability of the quadruple-gate approach which, paired with improved silicon fabrication techniques, makes the corner state quantum dot approach a promising …
We present an advanced lateral triple quantum dot made by local anodic oxidation. Three dots are coupled in a starlike geometry with one lead attached to each dot thus allowing for multiple path transport measurements with two dots per path. In addition charge detection is implemented using a quantum point contact. Both in charge measurements as well as in transport we observe clear signatures of states from each dot. Resonances of two dots can be established allowing for serial transport via the corresponding path. Quadruple points with all three dots in resonance are prepared for different e…
We present a theoretical model describing the photo-electrical response of a system composed of quantum dots embedded in a dielectric matrix. The model is based on the non-coherent rate equations and the Transfer Hamiltonian formalism. The self charge was included. Within this methodology, the response of the system only depends on fundamental material parameters and its geometry. Transport through several quantum dot configurations was simulated obtaining current-voltage curves in dark and illuminating conditions for three different scenarios: single one quantum dot and two quantum dots in pa…
We study transport through one or two ultrasmall quantum dots with discrete energy levels to which a time-dependent field is applied (e.g., microwaves). The AC field causes photon-assisted tunneling and also transitions between discrete energy levels of the dot. We treat the problem by introducing a generalization of the rotating-wave approximation to arbitrarily many levels. We calculate the dc-current through one dot and find satisfactory agreement with recent experiments by Oosterkamp et al. . In addition, we propose a novel electron pump consisting of two serially coupled single-level quan…
We consider two modifications of a recently proposed three-terminal quantum dot heat engine. First, we investigate the necessity of the thermalization assumption, namely that electrons are always thermalized by inelastic processes when traveling across the cavity where the heat is supplied. Second, we analyze various arrangements of tunneling-coupled quantum dots in order to implement a transmission function that is superior to the Lorentzian transmission function of a single quantum dot. We show that the maximum power of the heat engine can be improved by about a factor of two, even for a sma…
This paper examines the thermoelectric response of a dissipative quantum dot heat engine based on the Anderson-Holstein model in two relevant operating limits: (i) when the dot phonon modes are out of equilibrium, and (ii) when the dot phonon modes are strongly coupled to a heat bath. In the first case, a detailed analysis of the physics related to the interplay between the quantum dot level quantization, the on-site Coulomb interaction and the electron-phonon coupling on the thermoelectric performance reveals that an n-type heat engine performs better than a p-type heat engine. In the second …
We study the transient heat generation in a quantum dot system driven by a step-like or a square-shaped pulse bias. We find that a periodically oscillating heat generation arises after adding the sudden bias. One particularly surprising result is that there exists a heat absorption from the zero-temperature phonon subsystem. Thus the phonon population in non-equilibrium can be less than that of the equilibrium electron-phonon system. In addition, we also ascertain the optimal conditions for the operation of a quantum dot with the minimum heat generation.
Recent developments on studies of transport through quantum dots obtained by applying the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method are summarized. Some new aspects of Kondo physics which appear in nonequilibrium steady states are discussed both for the single dot case and for the serially coupled double-quantum-dot case.
The fluctuations of the heat current in a quantum dot coupled to electron reservoirs are calculated at finite frequency, voltage and temperature using the nonequilibrium Green function technique. The non-symmetrized heat noise is expressed as an integral on energy containing four contributions, each of which includes transmission amplitudes, electron-hole pair distribution functions and energy difference factors. The effect of the asymmetry of the couplings between the quantum dot and the reservoirs is studied. Features of the heat noise are highlighted and discussed for an equilibrium and an …
We investigate a heat- to charge-current converter consisting of a single-level quantum dot coupled to two ferromagnetic metals and one ferromagnetic insulator held at different temperatures. We demonstrate that this nano engine can act as an optimal heat to spin-polarized charge current converter in an antiparallel geometry, while it acts as a heat to pure spin current converter in the parallel case. We discuss the maximal output power of the device and its efficiency.
The photo-assisted heat current through a metal/dot/metal junction and its associated Peltier coefficient are computed in the framework of the time-dependent out-of-equilibrium Keldysh formalism in the presence of a dot energy modulation. When the frequency of the modulation is much larger than the amplitude of the modulation, the heat current follows the sinusoidal time evolution of the dot energy. This is no longer the case when the modulation frequency becomes of the order or smaller than the amplitude of the modulation. To characterize this non sinusoidal behavior, we have calculated the h…
Multi-terminal multi-dot devices have been put forward as versatile and performant setups for thermoelectric energy harvesting at the nanoscale. With a technique that encompasses and overtakes several of the usual theoretical tools used in this context, we explore a three-terminal Coulomb-coupled-dot device for refrigeration purposes. The refrigerator is monitored by either a voltage or a thermal bias. This comparative study shows that heat driven refrigerator is much underperforming than the power driven one, due to scarce on-dot charge fluctuations.
We study transport through double quantum dots coupled to normal and superconducting leads, where the Andreev reflection plays a key role in determining characteristic transport properties. We shall discuss two typical cases, i.e. double dots with serial or parallel geometry. For the parallel geometry, the interference of electrons via multiple paths is induced, so that the transmission probability has Fano-type dip structures which are symmetric with respect to the Fermi energy. We also investigate the Aharonov-Bohm(AB) effect for the parallel geometry. In some particular situations, we find …
We investigate a symmetrical double quantum dot system serially attached to the leads. The emphasis is on the numerical analysis of finite inter-dot tunneling in the presence of inter-dot repulsive capacitive coupling. The results reveal the competition between extended Kondo phases and local singlet phases in spin and charge degrees of freedom. The corresponding phase diagram is determined quantitatively.
We investigate entanglement between electrons in serially coupled double quantum dots attached to non interacting leads. In addition to local repulsion we consider the influence of capacitive inter-dot interaction. We show how the competition between extended Kondo and local singlet phases determines the ground state and thereby the entanglement.
The Seebeck coefficient (S) of a serially coupled quantum dot (SCQD) junction system is theoretically studied via a two-level Anderson model. A change of sign in S with respect to temperature is found, which arises from the competition between tunneling currents due to electrons and holes (i.e, bipolar tunneling effect). The change of sign in S implies that one can vary the equilibrium temperature to produce thermoelectric current in either the forward or reverse direction, leading to a bipolar thermoelectric effect. For the case of two parallel SCQDs, we also observe the oscillatory behavior …
We consider an interacting quantum dot connected to two reservoirs driven at distinct voltage/temperature and we study the correlations between charge and heat currents first as a function of the applied voltage bias, and second as a function of the temperature gradient between the two reservoirs. The Coulomb interactions in the quantum dot are treated using the Hartree approximation and the dot occupation number is determined self-consistently. The correlators exhibit structures in their voltage dependency which are highly non-linear when the coupling between the dot and the reservoirs is wea…
We systematically investigate electron transport through double quantum dots with particular emphasis on interference induced via multiple paths of electron propagation. By means of the slave-boson mean-field approximation, we calculate the conductance, the local density of states, the transmission probability in the Kondo regime at zero temperature. It is clarified how the Kondo-assisted transport changes its properties when the system is continuously changed among the serial, parallel and T-shaped double dots. The obtained results for the conductance are explained in terms of the Kondo reson…
Heat engines made of quantum-dot (QD) superlattice nanowires (SLNWs) offer promising applications in energy harvesting due to the reduction of phonon thermal conductivity. In solid state electrical generators (refrigerators), one needs to generate (remove) large amount of charge current (heat current). Consequently, a high QD SLNW density is required for realistic applications. This study theoretically investigated the properties of power factor and electron heat rectification for an SLNW array under the transition from a one dimensional system to a two dimensional system. The SLNW arrays show…
The quantum dot arrays (QDAs) embedded into inhomogeneous nanowires connected to metallic electrodes show an electron heat rectification effect, which is attributed to the thermal voltage arising from a temperature bias and the QDA with a broken spatial inversion symmetry. The staircase energy levels of QDAs can be controlled to the resonant and off resonant transports for electrons in the forward and backward temperature biases, respectively. The effect of electron Coulomb interactions on the rectification efficiency of heat diode is clarified by the case of double QDs. We find that it is imp…
The conductance through a serial double dot structure for which the inter-dot tunneling is stronger than the tunneling to the leads is studied using the numerical density matrix renormalization group method and analytic arguments. When the dots are occupied by 1 or 3 electrons the usual Kondo peak is obtained. For the case in which 2 electrons occupy the molecule a singlet is formed. Nevertheless, the conductance in that case has a constant non-zero value, and might even be equal to the maximum conductance of $2 e^2/h$ for certain values of the molecule parameters. We show that this is the res…
The heat generation by an electric current flowing through a quantum dot with the dot containing both electron-electron interaction and electron-phonon interaction, is studied. Using the non-equilibrium Keldysh Green's function method, the current-induced heat generation is obtained. We find that for a small phonon frequency, heat generation is proportional to the current. However, for a large phonon frequency, heat generation is in general qualitatively different from the current. It is non-monotonic with current and many unique and interesting behaviors emerge. The heat generation could be v…
We demonstrate the Josephson effect in a serial double quantum dot defined in a nanowire with epitaxial superconducting leads. The supercurrent stability diagram adopts a honeycomb pattern with electron-hole and left-right reflection symmetry. We observe sharp discontinuities in the magnitude of the critical current, $I_c$, as a function of dot occupation, related to doublet to singlet ground state transitions. Detuning of the energy levels offers a tuning knob for $I_c$, which attains a maximum at zero detuning. The consistency between experiment and theory indicates that our device is a fait…
Thermoelectric effects through a serial double quantum dot system weakly coupled to ferromagnetic leads are analyzed. Formal expressions of electrical conductance, thermal conductance, and thermal coefficient are obtained by means of Hubbard operators. The results show that although the thermopower is independent of the polarization of the leads, the figure of merit is reduced by an increase of polarization. The influences of temperature and interdot tunneling on the figure of merit are also investigated, and it is observed that increase of the interdot tunneling strength results in reduction …
The influence of electron-phonon interaction on the transmission phase shift of an electron passing through a quantum dot is investigated by using the scattering theory. The transmission phase versus the intra-dot level shows a serial of phonon-induced dips. These dips are highly sensitive to electron-phonon interaction strength $λ$, and they are much more pronounced than phonon-assisted sub-peaks appeared in the conductance. Phonon-induce dephasing is also studied, and the results show that the dephasing probability $T_d$ monotonically increases with the electron-phonon interaction strength $…
In this article we review aspects of charge and heat transport in interacting quantum dots and molecular junctions under stationary and time-dependent non-equilibrium conditions due to finite electrical and thermal bias. In particular, we discuss how a discrete level spectrum can be beneficial for thermoelectric applications, and investigate the detrimental effects of molecular vibrations on the efficiency of a molecular quantum dot as an energy converter. In addition, we consider the effects of a slow time-dependent modulation of applied voltages on the transport properties of a quantum dot a…
While thermodynamics is a useful tool to describe the driving of large systems close to equilibrium, fluctuations dominate the distribution of heat and work in small systems and far from equilibrium. We study the heat generated by driving a small system and change the drive parameters to analyse the transition from a drive leaving the system close to equilibrium to driving it far from equilibrium. Our system is a quantum dot in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure hosting a two-dimensional electron gas. The dot is tunnel-coupled to one part of the two-dimensional electron gas acting as a heat and par…
We analyze the noise properties of both electric charge and heat currents as well as their correlations in a quantum-dot based thermoelectric engine. The engine is a three-terminal conductor with crossed heat and charge flows where heat fluctuations can be monitored by a charge detector. We investigate the mutual influence of charge and heat dynamics and how it is manifested in the current and noise properties. In the presence of energy-dependent tunneling, operating conditions are discussed where a charge current can be generated by heat conversion. In addition, heat can be pumped into the ho…
Using the Keldysh Green function technique, we calculate the finite-frequency correlator between the electrical current and the heat current flowing through a quantum dot connected to reservoirs. At equilibrium, we find that this quantity, called mixed noise, is linked to the thermoelectric ac-conductance by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Out-of-equilibrium, we discuss its spectrum and find evidence of the close relationship between the mixed noise and the thermopower. We study the spectral coherence and identify the conditions to have a strong correlation between the electrical and heat…
We investigate the effects induced by spin polarization in the contacts attached to a serial double quantum dot. The polarization generates effective magnetic fields and suppresses the Kondo effect in each dot. The super-exchange interaction ($J_{\mathrm{AFM}}$), tuned by the inter-dot tunnelling rate $t$, can be used to compensate the effective fields and restore the Kondo resonance when the contact polarizations are aligned. As a consequence, the direction of the spin conductance can be controlled and even reversed using electrostatic gates alone. Furthermore, we study the associated two-imp…
We calculate adiabatic charge and spin pumping through a serial double quantum dot with strong Coulomb interaction, coupled to normal metal or ferromagnetic contacts. We use a real-time diagrammatic approach in the regime of weak coupling to the reservoirs. In the case of weak interdot tunnel coupling we investigate the influence of tunnel-induced renormalization effects due to charge fluctuations on the pumped charge and spin. We show that tunneling through thermally excited states can play an important role in the strong interdot coupling regime. In particular, for ferromagnetic contacts, bo…
We study heat rectification through quantum dots in the Coulomb blockade regime using a master equation approach. We consider both cases of two-terminal and four-terminal devices. In the two-terminal configuration, we analyze the case of a single quantum dot with either a doubly-degenerate level or two non-degenerate levels. In the sequential tunneling regime we analyze the behaviour of heat currents and rectification as functions of the position of the energy levels and of the temperature bias. In particular, we derive an upper bound for rectification in the closed-circuit setup with the doub…
We delve into the conditions under which a quantum dot thermoelectric setup may be tuned to realize an optimal heat-to-pure-spin-current converter. It is well known that a heat-to-pure-spin-current converter may be realized using a non-interacting quantum dot with a spin-split energy spectrum under particle hole symmetry conditions. However, with the inclusion of Coulomb interaction $U$, ubiquitous in typical quantum dot systems, the relevant transport physics is expected to be altered. In this work, we provide a detailed picture of thermoelectric pure spin currents at various Coulomb interact…
A quantum dot has been etched in bilayer graphene connected by two small constrictions to the leads. We show that this structure does not behave like a single quantum dot but consists of at least three sites of localized charge in series. The high symmetry and electrical stability of the device allowed us to triangulate the positions of the different sites of localized charge and find that one site is located in the island and one in each of the constrictions. Nevertheless we measure many consecutive single non-overlapping Coulomb-diamonds in series. In order to describe these findings, we tre…
It is shown that in many cases an adequate description of optical spectra of semiconductor quantum dots requires a treatment beyond the commonly used adiabatic approximation. We have developed a theory of phonon-assisted optical transitions in semiconductor quantum dots, which takes into account non-adiabaticity of the exciton-phonon system. Effects of non-adiabaticity lead to a mixing of different exciton and phonon states that provides a key to the understanding of surprisingly high intensities of phonon satellites observed in photoluminescence spectra of quantum dots. A breakdown of the adi…
Dots are ideal systems to study fundamentals on heat transfer at the nanoscale and promising nanoscale heat-engines and thermal devices. Here, we report on the validation of our theoretical model on the thermal conductance of a metallic dot single-electron transistor (md-SET) by a recent experiment on the low-T thermal conductance. We compare with the experiment, we emphasize the physics interpretation and characteristic values and we apply the model to evaluate the operation the md-SET as heat-switch. Perfect agreement is shown between the calculated and the measured charge conductance G, hea…
We investigate thermal transport in a serial asymmetric double quantum dot (DQD) coupled to two electron reservoirs with different temperatures. The inter- and intra-Coulomb interactions are taken into account in a Coulomb blockade DQD where the electron sequential tunneling via four different master equation approaches is considered. In the absence of Coulomb interactions, a neglectable thermoelectric and heat currents is found identifying as the Coulomb blockade DQD regime. In the presence of Coulomb interactions, intra- and inter-Coulomb interactions, crossings energies between the intra- a…
The performance of thermoelectric energy harvesters can be improved by nanostructures that exploit inelastic transport processes. One prototype is the three-terminal hopping thermoelectric device where electron hopping between quantum-dots are driven by hot phonons. Such three-terminal hopping thermoelectric devices have potential in achieving high efficiency or power via inelastic transport and without relying on heavy-elements or toxic compounds. We show in this work how output power of the device can be optimized via tuning the number and energy configuration of the quantum-dots embedded in…
Proposals for quantum information applications are frequently based on the coherent manipulation of spins confined to quantum dots. For these applications, p-type III-V material systems promise a reduction of the hyperfine interaction while maintaining large $g$-factors and strong spin-orbit interaction. In this work, we study bottom-gated device architectures to realize single and serial multi-quantum dot systems in Schottky contacted p-type GaSb nanowires. We find that the effect of potentials applied to gate electrodes on the nanowire is highly localized to the immediate vicinity of the gat…
The thermoelectric effect in a quantum dot (QD) attached to two leads in the presence of microwave fields is studied by using the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function technique. When the microwave is applied only on the QD and in the linear-response regime, the main peaks in the thermoelectric figure of merit and the thermopower are found to decrease, with the emergence of a set of photon-induced peaks. Under this condition the microwave field can not generate heat current or electrical bias voltage. Surprisingly, when the microwave field is applied only to one (bright) lead and not to the ot…
Full counting statistics of electron transport is a powerful diagnostic tool for probing the nature of quantum transport beyond what is obtainable from the average current or conductance measurement alone. In particular, the non-Markovian dynamics of quantum dot molecule plays an important role in the nonequilibrium electron tunneling processes. It is thus necessary to understand the non-Markovian full counting statistics in a quantum dot molecule. Here we study the non-Markovian full counting statistics in two typical quantum dot molecules, namely, serially coupled and side-coupled double qua…
Rectification of thermal fluctuations in mesoscopic conductors is the key idea of today's attempts to build nanoscale thermoelectric energy harvesters in order to convert heat into a useful electric power. So far, most concepts make use of the Seebeck effect in a two-terminal geometry where heat and charge are both carried by the same particles. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the working principle of a new kind of energy harvester, proposed recently using two capacitively coupled quantum dots. We show that due to its novel three-terminal design which spatially separates the heat reservoir…
We propose a nanoscale heat engine that utilizes the physics of resonant tunneling in quantum dots in order to transfer electrons only at specific energies. The nanoengine converts heat into electrical current in a multiterminal geometry which permits one to separate current and heat flows. By putting two quantum dots in series with a hot cavity, electrons that enter one lead are forced to gain a prescribed energy in order to exit the opposite lead, transporting a single electron charge. This condition yields an ideally efficient heat engine. The energy gain is a property of the composite syst…
The electronic structure, specific heat, and thermal conductivity of silicon embedded in a monolayer graphene nanosheet are studied using Density Functional Theory. Two different shapes of the substitutional Si doping in the graphene are studied, a triangular and a dot shape. The silicon doping of a graphene nanosheet, with the silicon atoms arranged in a triangular configuration in ortho- and para-positions, opens up a band gap transforming the sheet to a semiconducting material. The opening of the band gap is caused by the presence of the repulsion force between the silicon and carbon atoms …
We review recent theoretical work on thermoelectric energy harvesting in multi-terminal quantum-dot setups. We first discuss several examples of nanoscale heat engines based on Coulomb-coupled conductors. In particular, we focus on quantum dots in the Coulomb-blockade regime, chaotic cavities and resonant tunneling through quantum dots and wells. We then turn towards quantum-dot heat engines that are driven by bosonic degrees of freedom such as phonons, magnons and microwave photons. These systems provide interesting connections to spin caloritronics and circuit quantum electrodynamics.
