Machine Learning meets Quantum Foundations: A Brief Survey

The goal of machine learning is to facilitate a computer to execute a specific task without explicit instruction by an external party. Quantum foundations seeks to explain the conceptual and mathematical edifice of quantum theory. Recently, ideas from machine learning have successfully been applied to different problems in quantum foundations. Here, we compile the representative works done so far at the interface of machine learning and quantum foundations. We conclude the survey with potential future directions.

A brief introduction to the Foundations of Quantum Theory and an analysis of the Frauchiger-Renner paradox

This is a short text covering some topics on the Foundations of Quantum Theory and it includes some comments on the recent Nature article by D. Frauchiger and R. Renner. The so-called "paradox" is simply due to a misunderstanding on the appropriate way to apply the quantum mechanical rules. The text is meant to be accessible to non physicists and the math is kept to a minimum (just some Linear Algebra and extremely elementary Probability Theory).

Brief review related to the foundations of time-dependent density functional theory

The electron density $n(\rb,t)$, which is the central tool of time-dependent density functional theory, is presently considered to be derivable from a one-body time-dependent potential $V(\rb,t)$, via one-electron wave functions satisfying a time- dependent Schrödinger equation. This is here related via a generalized equation of motion to a Dirac density matrix now involving $t$. Linear response theory is then surveyed, with a special emphasis on the question of causality with respect to the density dependence of the potential. Extraction of $V(\rb,t)$ for solvable models is also proposed.

We briefly review the advanced mathematical language of fiber bundle structures and how they can be used to classify two-level quantum systems based on the analysis of the topological properties of their sets of state vectors. Quantum Will: Determinism meets Quantum Mechanics

We present a brief non-technical introduction to the standing discussion on the relation between Quantum Mechanics and Determinism. Quantum Mechanics inherent randomness in the measurement process is sometimes presented as a door to explain free will. We argue against this interpretation. The possibility that Quantum Mechanics provides just an effective description of Nature which is only valid at our low-energy scales is also discussed.

Quantum Annealing - Foundations and Frontiers

We briefly review various computational methods for the solution of optimization problems. First, several classical methods such as Metropolis algorithm and simulated annealing are discussed. We continue with a description of quantum methods, namely adiabatic quantum computation and quantum annealing. Next, the new D-Wave computer and the recent progress in the field claimed by the D-Wave group are discussed. We present a set of criteria which could help in testing the quantum features of these computers. We conclude with a list of considerations with regard to future research.
