In this talk, I review briefly a scenario for the evolution of a string-inspired cosmological model, in which condensates of primordial gravitational waves (GW), formed at the very early eras after the Big Bang, are considered responsible for inducing inflation and then a smooth exit to a radiation dominated epoch. Primordial axion fields, that exist in the fundamental massless gravitational (bosonic) string multiplet, couple to the non-trivial GW-induced anomalies. As a result of this coupling, there exist axion background configurations which violate (spontaneously) Lorentz symmetry, and remain undiluted at the end of inflation. In models with heavy sterile right-handed neutrinos (RHN), such backgrounds are linked to novel (Lorentz and CPT Violating) mechanisms for the generation of matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Cosmos, via the asymmetric decays of the RHN to standard model particles and antiparticles. During the QCD epoch, the axions develop an instanton-induced mass and can, thus, play the rôle of Dark Matter (DM). The energy density of such a Universe, throughout its evolution, has the form of that of a "running vacuum model", that is, it can be expanded in power series of even powers of the Hubble parameter $H(t)$. The coefficients of those terms, though, are different for the various cosmological epochs. For the phenomenology of our model, which is consistent with the current cosmological data, and could also help in alleviating (some of) the tensions, it suffices to consider up to and including quartic powers of $H(t)$. In the early Universe phase, it is the $H^4(t)$ term, induced by the GW condensate of the gravitational anomaly, that drives inflation without the need for external inflaton fields.
We compute the energy spectra for massless Kalb-Ramond axions in four-dimensional anisotropic string cosmological models. We show that, when integrated over directions, the four-dimensional anisotropic model leads to infra-red divergent spectra similar to the one found in the isotropic case.
We study axion-dilaton cosmologies derived from the low-energy string effective action. We present the classical homogeneous Friedmann-Robertson-Walker solutions and derive the semi-classical perturbation spectra in the dilaton, axion and moduli fields in the pre-Big Bang scenario. By constructing the unique S-duality invariant field perturbations for the axion and dilaton fields we derive S-duality invariant solutions, valid when the axion field is time-dependent as well as in a dilaton-vacuum cosmology. Whereas the dilaton and moduli fields have steep blue perturbation spectra (with spectral…
We discuss the semi-classical perturbation spectra produced in the massless fields of the low energy string action in a pre big bang type scenario. Axion fields may possess an almost scale-invariant spectrum on large scales dependent upon the evolution of the dilaton and moduli fields to which they are coupled. As an example we calculate the spectra for three axion fields present in a truncated type IIB model and show that they are related with at least one of the fields having a scale-invariant or red perturbation spectrum. In the simplest pre big bang scenario this may be inconsistent with t…
We present the study of exact inhomogeneous cosmological solutions to a four-dimensional low energy limit of string theory containing non-minimal interacting electromagnetic, dilaton and axion fields. We analyze Einstein-Rosen solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion equations and show, by explicitly taken the asymptotic limits, that they have asymptotically velocity-term dominated (AVTD) singularities.
The inhomogeneities associated with massless Kalb-Ramond axions can be amplified not only in isotropic (four-dimensional) string cosmological models but also in the fully anisotropic case. If the background geometry is isotropic, the axions (which are not part of the homogeneous background) develop, outside the horizon, growing modes leading, ultimately, to logarithmic energy spectra which are "red" in frequency and increase at large distance scales. We show that this conclusion can be evaded not only in the case of higher dimensional backgrounds with contracting internal dimensions but also i…
We present new exact solutions of the low-energy-effective-action string equations with both dilaton $ϕ$ and axion $H$ fields non-zero. The background universe is of Kantowski-Sachs type. We consider the possibility of a pseudoscalar axion field $h$ ($H=e^ϕ(dh)^{*}$) that can be either time or space dependent. The case of time-dependent $h$ reduces to that of a stiff perfect-fluid cosmology. For space-dependent $h$ there is just one non-zero time-space-space component of the axion field $H$, and this corresponds to a distinguished direction in space which prevents the models from isotropising.…
Using three-dimensional simulations, we study the dynamics and final structure of merging solitonic cores predicted to form in ultra-light axion dark matter halos. The classical, Newtonian equations of motion of a self-gravitating scalar field are described by the Schrödinger-Poisson equations. We investigate mergers of ground state (boson star) configurations with varying mass ratios, relative phases, orbital angular momenta and initial separation with the primary goal to understand the mass loss of the emerging core by gravitational cooling. Previous results showing that the final density pr…
I review a string-inspired cosmological model with gravitational anomalies in its early epochs, which is based on fields from the (bosonic) massless gravitational multiplet of strings, in particular gravitons and Kalb Ramond (KR), string-model independent, axions (the dilaton is assumed constant). I show how condensation of primordial gravitational waves, which are generared at the very early eras immediately after the big bang, can lead to inflation of the so called running vacuum model (RVM) type, without external inflatons. The role of the slow-roll field is played by the KR axion, but it d…
In this letter, we elaborate further on a Cosmological "Running-Vacuum" type model for the Universe, suggested previously by the authors within the context of a string-inspired effective theory in the presence of a Kalb-Ramond (KR) gravitational axion field which descends from the antisymmetric tensor of the massless gravitational string multiplet. In the presence of this field, which has anomalous CP violating interactions with the gravitons, primordial gravitational waves induce gravitational anomalies, which in turn are responsible for the appearance of $H^2$ and $H^4$ contributions to the …
We present exact inhomogeneous and anisotropic cosmological solutions of low-energy string theory containing dilaton and axion fields. The spacetime metric possesses cylindrical symmetry. The solutions describe ever-expanding universes with an initial curvature singularity and contain known homogeneous solutions as subcases. The asymptotic form of the solution near the initial singularity has a spatially-varying Kasner-like form. The inhomogeneous axion and dilaton fields are found to evolve quasi-homogeneously on scales larger than the particle horizon. When the inhomogeneities enter the hori…
The asymptotic behaviour at late times of inhomogeneous axion-dilaton cosmologies is investigated. The space-times considered here admit two abelian space-like Killing vectors. These space-times evolve towards an anisotropic universe containing gravitational radiation. Furthermore, a peeling-off behaviour of the Weyl tensor and the antisymmetric tensor field strength is found. The relation to the pre-big-bang scenario is briefly discussed.
The generic scale-invariant theory of an axion and a dilaton coupled to gravity in $d$-dimensions is generalized to a `universal' one-axion model with two dilatons that reproduces itself under consistent dimensional-reduction/truncation. Flat FLRW cosmologies are shown to correspond to trajectories of a three-dimensional autonomous dynamical system, which we analyse with a focus on accelerated cosmic expansion, deriving the precise swampland bounds that exclude eternal acceleration. We also show that for two sets of values of its three independent parameters, the model is a consistent truncati…
I review several aspects of torsion in string-inspired cosmologies. In particular, I discuss its connection with fundamental, string-model independent, axion fields associated with the massless gravitational multiplet of the string. I argue in favour of the role of primordial gravitational anomalies coupled to such axions in inducing inflation of a type encountered in the "running-vacuum-model (RVM)" cosmological framework, without fundamental inflaton fields. The gravitational-anomaly terms owe their existence to the Green-Schwarz mechanism for the (extra-dimensional) anomaly cancellation, an…
We discuss a connection between gravitational-wave physics, quantum theory anomalies, right-handed (sterile) neutrinos, (spontaneous) CPT Violation and Leptogenesis, within the framework of string-inspired cosmological models. In particular, we present a scenario, according to which (primordial) gravitational waves induce gravitational anomalies during inflation. This, in turn, results in the existence of an undiluted (at the exit of inflation/beginning of radiation era) bakcground of the Kalb-Ramond (KR) axion of the massless bosonic string gravitational multiplet. The latter may violate spon…
We present a model for the Universe in which quantum anomalies are argued to play an important dual role: they are responsible for generating matter-antimatter asymmetry, but also provide time-dependent contributions to the vacuum energy density of "running-vacuum" type, which drive the Universe evolution. During the inflationary phase of a string-inspired Universe, and its subsequent exit, the existence of primordial gravitational waves induce gravitational anomalies, which couple to the Kalb-Ramond (KR)axion field of the massless gravitational string multiplet. Such anomalous CP violating in…
We study fermions derivatively coupled to axion-like or pseudoscalar fields, and show that the axial vector current of the fermions is not conserved in the limit where the fermion is massless. This apparent violation of the classical chiral symmetry is due to the background axion field. We compute the contributions to this anomalous Ward identity due to the pseudoscalar field alone, which arise in Minkowski space, as well as the effects due to an interaction with an external gravitational field. For the case of massless fermions, these interactions induce terms in the axion effective action th…
Cosmological solutions with a homogeneous Yang-Mills field which oscillates and passes between topologically distinct vacua are discussed. These solutions are used to model the collapsing Bartnik-McKinnon gravitational sphaleron and the associated anomalous production of fermions. The Dirac equation is analyzed in these backgrounds. It is shown explicitly that a fermion energy level crosses from the negative to positive energy spectrum as the gauge field evolves between the topologically distinct vacua. The cosmological solutions are also generalized to include an axion field.
We review scenarios of baryogenesis through leptogenesis at early epochs of the universe, in string-inspired minimal extensions of the Standard Model (SM), involving heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos. Spontaneous violation of CPT symmetry is induced by appropriate (in general, temperature-dependent) backgrounds of the Kalb-Ramond (KR) axion field, which has its origins in the (bosonic) massless string multiplet. As interesting features of the model, we also discuss two issues associated with quantum (chiral) anomalies: (i) the non-contribution of the KR axion background to the (anomalous) …
I review a (3+1)-dimensional, string-inspired cosmological model with gravitational anomalies (of Chern-Simons (CS) type) at early epochs, and a totally-antisymmetric torsion, dual to a massless axion-like field ("gravitational axion"), which couples to the CS term. Under appropriate conditions, primordial gravitational waves can condense, leading to a condensate of the CS anomaly term. As a consequence, one obtains inflation in this theory, of running-vacuum-model (RVM) type, without the need for external inflatons. At the end of the inflationary era, chiral fermionic matter is generated, who…
A global O$(2,2)$ symmetry is found in the Brans-Dicke theory of gravity when the dilaton is coupled to axion and moduli fields. The symmetry is broken if a cosmological constant is introduced. Within the class of spatially homogeneous Bianchi cosmologies, only the type I and V models respect the symmetry. Isotropic cosmological solutions are found for arbitrary spatial curvature. In the region of parameter space relevant to the pre-big bang scenario, the interplay between the scalar fields results in a bouncing cosmology.
We propose that several of the anomalies that have been observed at large angular scales in the CMB have a common origin in a cosmic bounce that took place before the inflationary era. The bounce introduces a new physical scale in the problem, which breaks the almost scale invariance of inflation. As a result, the state of scalar perturbations at the onset of inflation is no longer the Bunch-Davies vacuum, but it rather contains excitations and non-Gaussianity, which are larger for infrared modes. We argue that the combined effect of these excitations and the correlations between CMB modes and…
The string effective action at tree level contains, in its bosonic sector, the Einstein-Hilbert term, the dilaton, and the axion, besides scalar and gauge fields coming from the Ramond-Ramond sector. The reduction to four dimensions brings to scene moduli fields. We generalize this effective action by introducing two arbitrary parameters, $ω$ and $m$, connected with the dilaton and axion couplings. In this way, more general frameworks can be analyzed. Regular solutions with a bounce can be obtained for a range of (negative) values of the parameter $ω$ which, however, exclude the pure string co…
We look at the possibility of superinflationary behavior in a class of anisotropic Type-IIB superstring cosmologies in the context of Pre-big Bang scenario and find that there exists a rather narrow range of parameters for which these models inflate. We then show that, although in general this behavior is left untouched by the introduction of a Ramond-Ramond axion field through a SL(2,R) rotation, there exists a particular class of axions for which inflation disappears completely. Asymptotic past initial conditions are briefly discussed, and some speculations on the possible extension of Pre-b…
In a modest attempt to present potentially new paradigms in Cosmology, including its inflationary epoch, and initiate discussions, I review in this article some novel, string-inspired cosmological models, which entail a purely geometrical origin of the Dark sector of the Universe but also of its observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. The models contain gravitational (string-model independent, Kalb-Ramond (KR)) axion fields coupled to primordial gravitational anomalies via CP-violating interactions. The anomaly terms are four-space-time-dimensional remnants of the Green-Schwarz counterterms appe…
If the dark energy equation of state is anisotropic, the expansion rate of the universe becomes direction-dependent at late times. We show that such models are not only cosmologically viable but that they could explain some of the observed anomalies in the CMB, and shed some light into the coincidence problem. The possible anisotropy can then be constrained by studying its effects on the luminosity distance-redshift relation inferred from several observations. A vector field action for dark energy is also presented as an example of such possibility.
I review a string-inspired cosmological model, with gravitational anomalies present at very early epochs, which includes a totally antisymmetric torsion, that in (3+1)-dimensions is equivalent to a pseudoscalar (Kalb-Ramond, string-model independent) axion field. Upon condensation of primordial gravitational waves (GW), that are created at a pre-inflationary era, the model leads to inflation of the so-called running-vacuum-model (RVM) type, which is realised without the need for external inflaton fields, being due to the non-linearities that characterise the gravitational theory. The model pro…
We present a string-based picture of the cosmological evolution in which (CP-violating) gravitational anomalies acting during the inflationary phase of the universe cause the vacuum energy density to "run" with the effective Hubble parameter squared, $H^2$, thanks to the axion field of the bosonic string multiplet. This leads to baryogenesis through leptogenesis with massive right-handed neutrinos. The generation of chiral matter after inflation helps in cancelling the anomalies in the observable radiation- and matter- dominated eras. The present era inherits the same "running vacuum" structur…
We study aspects of inflation and the possibility of enhanced production of primordial black holes (PBHs) and gravitational waves (GWs) in a string-inspired model of two axion fields coupled to Chern-Simons gravity, which results in a running-vacuum-model inflation. Fluctuations of the scale invariant spectrum, consistent with the cosmological data, are provided in this model by world-sheet (non-perturbative) instanton terms of the axion field arising from string compactification. As a result of such modulations, there is an enhanced production of PBHs and GWs in such cosmologies, which may le…
In the context of structure formation with ultralight axion dark matter, we offer an alternative explanation for the mass relation of solitonic cores and their host halos observed in numerical simulations. Our argument is based entirely on the mass gain that occurs during major mergers of binary cores and largely independent of the initial core-halo mass relation assigned to hosts that have just collapsed. We find a relation between the halo mass $M_h$ and corresponding core mass $M_c$, $M_c\propto M_h^{2β-1}$, where $(1-β)$ is the core mass loss fraction. Following the evolution of core masse…
We present a class of exact solutions for homogeneous, anisotropic cosmologies in four dimensions derived from the low-energy string effective action including a homogeneous dilaton $ϕ$ and antisymmetric tensor potential $B_{μν}$. Making this potential time-dependent produces an anisotropic energy-momentum tensor, and leads us to consider a Bianchi I cosmology. The solution for the axion field must then only be a linear function of one spatial coordinate. This in turn places an upper bound on the product of the two scale factors evolving perpendicular to the gradient of the axion field. The on…
In previous works we have derived a Running Vacuum Model (RVM) for a string Universe, which provides an effective description of the evolution of 4-dimensional string-inspired cosmologies from inflation till the present epoch. In the context of this "stringy RVM" version, it is assumed that the early Universe is characterised by purely gravitational degrees of freedom, from the massless gravitational string multiplet, including the antisymmetric tensor field. The latter plays an important role, since its dual gives rise to a `stiff' gravitational-axion "matter", which in turn couples to the gr…
Families of anisotropic and inhomogeneous string cosmologies containing non-trivial dilaton and axion fields are derived by applying the global symmetries of the string effective action to a generalized Einstein-Rosen metric. The models exhibit a two-dimensional group of Abelian isometries. In particular, two classes of exact solutions are found that represent inhomogeneous generalizations of the Bianchi type VI_h cosmology. The asymptotic behaviour of the solutions is investigated and further applications are briefly discussed.
