We prove the Existential Closedness conjecture for the differential equation of the $j$-function and its derivatives. It states that in a differentially closed field certain equations involving the differential equation of the $j$-function have solutions. Its consequences include a complete axiomatisation of $j$-reducts of differentially closed fields, a dichotomy result for strongly minimal sets in those reducts, and a functional analogue of the Modular Zilber-Pink with Derivatives conjecture.
Let $G$ be a finitely presented group, and let $H$ be a subgroup of $G$. We prove that if $H$ is acylindrically hyperbolic and existentially closed in $G$, then $G$ is acylindrically hyperbolic. As a corollary, any finitely presented group which is existentially equivalent to the mapping class group of a surface of finite type, to $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$ or $\mathrm{Aut}(F_n)$ for $n\geq 2$ or to the Higman group, is acylindrically hyperbolic.
Inspired by the idea of blurring the exponential function, we define blurred variants of the $j$-function and its derivatives, where blurring is given by the action of a subgroup of $\rm{GL}_2(\mathbb{C})$. For a dense subgroup (in the complex topology) we prove an Existential Closedness theorem which states that all systems of equations in terms of the corresponding blurred $j$ with derivatives have complex solutions, except where there is a functional transcendence reason why they should not. For the $j$-function without derivatives we prove a stronger theorem, namely, Existential Closedness…
We prove some unconditional cases of the Existential Closedness problem for the modular $j$-function. For this, we show that for any finitely generated field we can find a "convenient" set of generators. This is done by showing that in any field equipped with functions replicating the algebraic behaviour of the modular $j$-function and its derivatives, one can define a natural closure operator in three equivalent different ways.
We answer two open questions about the model theory of valued differential fields introduced by Scanlon. We show that they eliminate imaginaries in the geometric language introduced by Haskell, Hrushovski and Macpherson and that they have the invariant extension property. These two result follow from an abstract criterion for the density of definable types in enrichments of algebraically closed valued fields. Finally, we show that this theory is metastable.
Assuming that the differential field $(K,δ)$ is differentially large, in the sense of León Sánchez and Tressl, and "bounded" as a field, we prove that for any linear differential algebraic group $G$ over $K$, the differential Galois (or constrained) cohomology set $H^1_δ(K,G)$ is finite. This applies, among other things, to closed ordered differential fields $K$, in the sense of Singer, and to closed $p$-adic differential fields in the sense of Tressl. As an application, we prove a general existence result for parameterized Picard-Vessiot extensions within certain families of fields; if $(K,δ_…
In unpublished notes Pila proposed a Modular Zilber-Pink with Derivatives (MZPD) conjecture, which is a Zilber-Pink type statement for the modular $j$-function and its derivatives. In this article we define D-special varieties, then state and prove two functional (differential) analogues of the MZPD conjecture for those varieties. In particular, we prove a weak version of MZPD. As a special case of our results, we obtain a functional Modular André-Oort with Derivatives statement. The main tools used in the paper come from (model theoretic) differential algebra and complex analytic geometry, an…
We axiomatize a class of existentially closed exponential fields equipped with an $E$-derivation. We apply our results to the field of real numbers endowed with $exp(x)$ the classical exponential function defined by its power series expansion and to the field of p-adic numbers endowed with the function $exp(px)$ defined on the $p$-adic integers where $p$ is a prime number strictly bigger than $2$ (or with $exp(4x)$ when $p=2$).
For certain theories of existentially closed topological differential fields, we show that there is a strong relationship between $\mathcal L\cup\{D\}$-definable sets and their $\mathcal L$-reducts, where $\mathcal L$ is a relational expansion of the field language and $D$ a symbol for a derivation. This enables us to associate with an $\mathcal L\cup\{D\}$-definable group in models of such theories, a local $\mathcal L$-definable group. As a byproduct, we show that in closed ordered differential fields, one has the descending chain condition on centralisers.
For every natural number $m$, the existentially closed models of the theory of fields with $m$ commuting derivations can be given a first-order geometric characterization in several ways. In particular, the theory of these differential fields has a model-companion. The axioms are that certain differential varieties determined by certain ordinary varieties are nonempty. There is no restriction on the characteristic of the underlying field.
Truncation in Generalized Series fields is a robust notion, in the sense that it is preserved under various algebraic and some transcendental extensions. In this paper, we study conditions that ensure that a truncation closed set extends naturally to a truncation closed differential ring, and a truncation closed differential field has a truncation closed Liouville closure. In particular, we introduce the Notion of IL-closedness in Unions of Hahn fields in order to determine that this condition is sufficient to preserve truncation in those two settings for constructions such as the field of log…
Motivated by the study of meromorphic vector fields, a model theory of "compact complex manifolds equipped with a generic derivation" is here proposed. This is made precise by the notion of a differential CCM-structure. A first-order axiomatisation of existentially closed differential CCM-structures is given. The resulting theory, DCCM, is a common expansion of the theories of differentially closed fields and compact complex manifolds. A study of the basic model theory of DCCM is initiated, including proofs of completeness, quantifier elimination, elimination of imaginaries, and total transcen…
Let $\mathcal{K}:=(K;+,\cdot, D, 0, 1)$ be a differentially closed field of characteristic $0$ with field of constants $C$. In the first part of the paper we explore the connection between Ax-Schanuel type theorems (predimension inequalities) for a differential equation $E(x,y)$ and the geometry of the fibres $U_s:=\{ y:E(s,y) \wedge y \notin C \}$ where $s$ is a non-constant element. We show that certain types of predimension inequalities imply strong minimality and geometric triviality of $U_s$. Moreover, the induced structure on the Cartesian powers of $U_s$ is given by special subvarieties…
