In this paper, we introduce a psychology-inspired approach to model and predict the music genre preferences of different groups of users by utilizing human memory processes. These processes describe how humans access information units in their memory by considering the factors of (i) past usage frequency, (ii) past usage recency, and (iii) the current context. Using a publicly available dataset of more than a billion music listening records shared on the music streaming platform Last.fm, we find that our approach provides significantly better prediction accuracy results than various baseline algorithms for all evaluated user groups, i.e., (i) low-mainstream music listeners, (ii) medium-mainstream music listeners, and (iii) high-mainstream music listeners. Furthermore, our approach is based on a simple psychological model, which contributes to the transparency and explainability of the calculated predictions.
In this paper, we propose to infer music genre embeddings from audio datasets carrying semantic information about genres. We show that such embeddings can be used for disambiguating genre tags (identification of different labels for the same genre, tag translation from a tag system to another, inference of hierarchical taxonomies on these genre tags). These embeddings are built by training a deep convolutional neural network genre classifier with large audio datasets annotated with a flat tag system. We show empirically that they makes it possible to retrieve the original taxonomy of a tag sys…
The importance of repetitions in music is well-known. In this paper, we study music repetitions in the context of effective and efficient automatic genre classification in large-scale music-databases. We aim at enhancing the access and organization of pieces of music in Digital Libraries by allowing automatic categorization of entire collections by considering only their musical content. We handover to the public a set of genre-specific patterns to support research in musicology. The patterns can be used, for instance, to explore and analyze the relations between musical genres. There are many…
Music genres allow to categorize musical items that share common characteristics. Although these categories are not mutually exclusive, most related research is traditionally focused on classifying tracks into a single class. Furthermore, these categories (e.g., Pop, Rock) tend to be too broad for certain applications. In this work we aim to expand this task by categorizing musical items into multiple and fine-grained labels, using three different data modalities: audio, text, and images. To this end we present MuMu, a new dataset of more than 31k albums classified into 250 genre classes. For …
Annotating music items with music genres is crucial for music recommendation and information retrieval, yet challenging given that music genres are subjective concepts. Recently, in order to explicitly consider this subjectivity, the annotation of music items was modeled as a translation task: predict for a music item its music genres within a target vocabulary or taxonomy (tag system) from a set of music genre tags originating from other tag systems. However, without a parallel corpus, previous solutions could not handle tag systems in other languages, being limited to the English-language on…

Music genre can be hard to describe: many factors are involved, such as style, music technique, and historical context. Some genres even have overlapping characteristics. Looking for a better understanding of how music genres are related to musical harmonic structures, we gathered data about the music chords for thousands of popular Brazilian songs. Here, 'popular' does not only refer to the genre named MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) but to nine different genres that were considered particular to the Brazilian case. The main goals of the present work are to extract and engineer harmonically rel…
Deep learning has been demonstrated its effectiveness and efficiency in music genre classification. However, the existing achievements still have several shortcomings which impair the performance of this classification task. In this paper, we propose a hybrid architecture which consists of the paralleling CNN and Bi-RNN blocks. They focus on spatial features and temporal frame orders extraction respectively. Then the two outputs are fused into one powerful representation of musical signals and fed into softmax function for classification. The paralleling network guarantees the extracting featu…
Music genre classification, especially using lyrics alone, remains a challenging topic in Music Information Retrieval. In this study we apply recurrent neural network models to classify a large dataset of intact song lyrics. As lyrics exhibit a hierarchical layer structure - in which words combine to form lines, lines form segments, and segments form a complete song - we adapt a hierarchical attention network (HAN) to exploit these layers and in addition learn the importance of the words, lines, and segments. We test the model over a 117-genre dataset and a reduced 20-genre dataset. Experiment…

Music genre classification is one of the trending topics in regards to the current Music Information Retrieval (MIR) Research. Since, the dependency of genre is not only limited to the audio profile, we also make use of textual content provided as lyrics of the corresponding song. We implemented a CNN based feature extractor for spectrograms in order to incorporate the acoustic features and a Hierarchical Attention Network based feature extractor for lyrics. We then go on to classify the music track based upon the resulting fused feature vector.
Music genre classification is one of the sub-disciplines of music information retrieval (MIR) with growing popularity among researchers, mainly due to the already open challenges. Although research has been prolific in terms of number of published works, the topic still suffers from a problem in its foundations: there is no clear and formal definition of what genre is. Music categorizations are vague and unclear, suffering from human subjectivity and lack of agreement. In its first part, this paper offers a survey trying to cover the many different aspects of the matter. Its main goal is give …
Organize songs, albums, and artists in groups with shared similarity could be done with the help of genre labels. In this paper, we present a novel approach for automatic classifying musical genre in Brazilian music using only the song lyrics. This kind of classification remains a challenge in the field of Natural Language Processing. We construct a dataset of 138,368 Brazilian song lyrics distributed in 14 genres. We apply SVM, Random Forest and a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM) network combined with different word embeddings techniques to address this classification task. Our ex…

Online music databases have increased signicantly as a consequence of the rapid growth of the Internet and digital audio, requiring the development of faster and more efficient tools for music content analysis. Musical genres are widely used to organize music collections. In this paper, the problem of automatic music genre classification is addressed by exploring rhythm-based features obtained from a respective complex network representation. A Markov model is build in order to analyse the temporal sequence of rhythmic notation events. Feature analysis is performed by using two multivariate st…
Prevalent efforts have been put in automatically inferring genres of musical items. Yet, the propose solutions often rely on simplifications and fail to address the diversity and subjectivity of music genres. Accounting for these has, though, many benefits for aligning knowledge sources, integrating data and enriching musical items with tags. Here, we choose a new angle for the genre study by seeking to predict what would be the genres of musical items in a target tag system, knowing the genres assigned to them within source tag systems. We call this a translation task and identify three cases…
Interpretation of retrieved results is an important issue in music recommender systems, particularly from a user perspective. In this study, we investigate the methods for providing interpretability of content features using self-attention. We extract lyric features with the self-attentive genre classification model trained on 140,000 tracks of lyrics. Likewise, we extract acoustic features using the acoustic model with self-attention trained on 120,000 tracks of acoustic signals. The experimental results show that the proposed methods provide the characteristics that are interpretable in term…

In this work, we analyse the random projections of Mel-spectrograms as low-level features for music genre classification. This approach was compared to handcrafted features, features learned using an auto-encoder and features obtained from a transfer learning setting. Tests in five different well-known, publicly available datasets show that random projections leads to results comparable to learned features and outperforms features obtained via transfer learning in a shallow learning scenario. Random projections do not require using extensive specialist knowledge and, simultaneously, requires l…

We report a statistical analysis over more than eight thousand songs. Specifically, we investigate the probability distribution of the normalized sound amplitudes. Our findings seems to suggest a universal form of distribution which presents a good agreement with a one-parameter stretched Gaussian. We also argue that this parameter can give information on music complexity, and consequently it goes towards classifying songs as well as music genres. Additionally, we present statistical evidences that correlation aspects of the songs are directly related with the non-Gaussian nature of their soun…

Music Genre Classification is the problem of associating genre-related labels to digitized music tracks. It has applications in the organization of commercial and personal music collections. Often, music tracks are described as a set of timbre-inspired sound textures. In shallow-learning systems, the total number of sound textures per track is usually too high, and texture downsampling is necessary to make training tractable. Although previous work has solved this by linear downsampling, no extensive work has been done to evaluate how texture selection benefits genre classification in the cont…
The central idea of this paper is to demonstrate the strength of lyrics for music mining and natural language processing (NLP) tasks using the distributed representation paradigm. For music mining, we address two prediction tasks for songs: genre and popularity. Existing works for both these problems have two major bottlenecks. First, they represent lyrics using handcrafted features that require intricate knowledge of language and music. Second, they consider lyrics as a weak indicator of genre and popularity. We overcome both the bottlenecks by representing lyrics using distributed representa…
This thesis combines audio-analysis with computer vision to approach Music Information Retrieval (MIR) tasks from a multi-modal perspective. This thesis focuses on the information provided by the visual layer of music videos and how it can be harnessed to augment and improve tasks of the MIR research domain. The main hypothesis of this work is based on the observation that certain expressive categories such as genre or theme can be recognized on the basis of the visual content alone, without the sound being heard. This leads to the hypothesis that there exists a visual language that is used to…
Users are able to access millions of songs through music streaming services like Spotify, Pandora, and Deezer. Access to such large catalogs, created a need for relevant song recommendations. However, user preferences are highly subjective in nature and change according to context (e.g., music that is suitable in the morning is not as suitable in the evening). Moreover, the music one user may prefer in a given context may be different from what another user prefers in the same context (i.e., what is considered good morning music differs across users). Accurately representing these preferences …
Online music services have tens of millions of tracks. The content itself is broad and covers various musical genres as well as non-musical audio content such as radio plays and podcasts. The sheer scale and diversity of content makes it difficult for a user to find relevant tracks. Relevant recommendations are therefore crucial for a good user experience. Here we present a method to compute track-track similarities using collaborative filtering signals with side information. On a data set from music streaming service SoundCloud, the method here outperforms the widely adopted implicit matrix f…

Since many online music services emerged in recent years so that effective music recommendation systems are desirable. Some common problems in recommendation system like feature representations, distance measure and cold start problems are also challenges for music recommendation. In this paper, I proposed a triplet neural network, exploiting both positive and negative samples to learn the representation and distance measure between users and items, to solve the recommendation task.

Music streaming services heavily rely on recommender systems to improve their users' experience, by helping them navigate through a large musical catalog and discover new songs, albums or artists. However, recommending relevant and personalized content to new users, with few to no interactions with the catalog, is challenging. This is commonly referred to as the user cold start problem. In this applied paper, we present the system recently deployed on the music streaming service Deezer to address this problem. The solution leverages a semi-personalized recommendation strategy, based on a deep …
Modeling various aspects that make a music piece unique is a challenging task, requiring the combination of multiple sources of information. Deep learning is commonly used to obtain representations using various sources of information, such as the audio, interactions between users and songs, or associated genre metadata. Recently, contrastive learning has led to representations that generalize better compared to traditional supervised methods. In this paper, we present a novel approach that combines multiple types of information related to music using cross-modal contrastive learning, allowing…
Popularity-based approaches are widely adopted in music recommendation systems, both in industry and research. However, as the popularity distribution of music items typically is a long-tail distribution, popularity-based approaches to music recommendation fall short in satisfying listeners that have specialized music. The contribution of this article is three-fold. We provide several quantitative measures describing the proximity of a user's music preference to the music mainstream. We define the measures at two levels: relating a listener's music preferences to the global music preferences o…

Musical preferences have been considered a mirror of the self. In this age of Big Data, online music streaming services allow us to capture ecologically valid music listening behavior and provide a rich source of information to identify several user-specific aspects. Studies have shown musical engagement to be an indirect representation of internal states including internalized symptomatology and depression. The current study aims at unearthing patterns and trends in the individuals at risk for depression as it manifests in naturally occurring music listening behavior. Mental well-being scores…
Recommending the right content in large scale multimedia streaming services is an important and challenging problem that has received much attention in the past decade. A key ingredient for successful recommendations is an effective similarity metric between two objects, and models that leverage the current context to constrain the recommendations. This work proposes a model for random object generation that introduces two key novel elements: (i) a similarity metric based on the distance between objects in a given object sequence, that is also used to measure similarity between meta-data assoc…

Current music recommender systems typically act in a greedy fashion by recommending songs with the highest user ratings. Greedy recommendation, however, is suboptimal over the long term: it does not actively gather information on user preferences and fails to recommend novel songs that are potentially interesting. A successful recommender system must balance the needs to explore user preferences and to exploit this information for recommendation. This paper presents a new approach to music recommendation by formulating this exploration-exploitation trade-off as a reinforcement learning task ca…
