We describe topological edge solitons in a continuous dislocated Lieb array of helical waveguides. The linear Floquet spectrum of this structure is characterized by the presence of two topological gaps with edge states residing in them. A focusing nonlinearity enables families of topological edge solitons bifurcating from the linear edge states. Such solitons are localized both along and across the edge of the array. Due to the non-monotonic dependence of the propagation constant of the edge states on the Bloch momentum, one can construct topological edge solitons that either propagate in different directions along the same boundary or do not move. This allows us to study collisions of edge solitons moving in the opposite directions. Such solitons always interpenetrate each other without noticeable radiative losses; however, they exhibit a spatial shift that depends on the initial phase difference.
We consider a topological Floquet insulator realized as a honeycomb array of helical waveguides imprinted in weakly birefringent medium. The system accounts for four-wave mixing occurring at a series of resonances arising due to Floquet phase matching. Under these resonant conditions, the system sustains stable linearly polarized and metastable elliptically polarized two-component edge solitons. Coupled nonlinear equations describing evolution of the envelopes of such solitons are derived.
We consider a topological Floquet insulator consisting of two honeycomb arrays of identical waveguides having opposite helicities. The interface between the arrays supports two distinct topological edge states, which can be resonantly coupled by additional weak longitudinal refractive index modulation with a period larger than the helix period. In the presence of Kerr nonlinearity, such coupled edge states enable topological Bragg solitons. Theory and examples of such solitons are presented.
We introduce topological vector edge solitons in a Floquet insulator, consisting of two honeycomb arrays of helical waveguides with opposite directions of rotation in a focusing nonlinear optical medium. Zigzag edges of two arrays placed in contact create a zigzag-zigzag interface between two structures with different topology. A characteristic feature of such a photonic insulator is that, in the linear limit, it simultaneously supports two topologically protected chiral edge states at the interface between the two arrays. In the presence of nonlinearity, either bright or dark scalar Floquet e…
The Lieb Lattice exhibits intriguing properties that are of general interest in both the fundamental physics and practical applications. Here, we investigate the topological Landau-Zener Bloch oscillation in a photonic Floquet Lieb lattice, where the dimerized helical waveguides is constructed to realize the synthetic spin-orbital interaction through the Floquet mechanism, rendering us to study the impacts of topological transition from trivial gaps to non-trivial ones. The compact localized states of flat bands supported by the local symmetry of Lieb lattice will be associated with other band…
We consider an array of straight nonlinear waveguides constituting a two-dimensional square lattice, with a few central layers tilted with respect to the rest of the structure. It is shown that such configuration represents a line defect, in the lattice plane, which is periodically modulated along the propagation direction. In the linear limit, such a system sustains line defect modes, whose number coincides with the number of tilted layers. In the presence of nonlinearity the branches of defect solitons propagating along the defect line bifurcate from each of the linear defect modes. Dependin…
Topological insulators are unique physical structures that are insulators in their bulk, but support currents at their edges which can be unidirectional and topologically protected from scattering on disorder and inhomogeneities. Photonic topological insulators can be crafted in materials that exhibit a strong nonlinear response, thus opening the door to the exploration of the interplay between nonlinearity and topological effects. Among the fascinating new phenomena arising from this interplay is the formation of topological edge solitons -- hybrid asymmetric states localized across and along…
We theoretically introduce a new type of topological dipole solitons propagating in a Floquet topological insulator based on a kagome array of helical waveguides. Such solitons bifurcate from two edge states belonging to different topological gaps and have bright envelopes of different symmetries: fundamental for one component, and dipole for the other. The formation of dipole solitons is enabled by unique spectral features of the kagome array which allow the simultaneous coexistence of two topological edge states from different gaps at the same boundary. Notably, these states have equal and n…
A salient feature of solid-state topological materials in two dimensions is the presence of conducting electronic edge states that are insensitive to scattering by disorder. Such unidirectional edge states have been explored in many experimental settings beyond solid-state electronic systems, including in photonic devices, mechanical and acoustic structures, and others. It is of great interest to understand how topological states behave in the presence of inter-particle interactions and nonlinearity. Here we experimentally demonstrate unidirectional soliton-like nonlinear states on the edge of…
Topological insulators are studied via tight-binding approximations of longitudinally driven photonic lattices with three lattice sites per unit cell. Two cases are considered in detail: Lieb and Kagome lattices. The lattice is decomposed into three sublattices each of which are allowed move independently of one another. Emphasis is placed on periodic driving induced by laser-etched helical coils along the direction of propagation. The linear Floquet bands are constructed for various inter-sublattice rotation patterns such as: different radii, different frequency, phase offset and quasi one-di…

We theoretically explore the dynamics of spatial solitons in nonlinear/interacting bosonic topological insulators. We employ a time-reversal broken Lieb-lattice analog of a Chern insulator and find that in the presence of a saturable nonlinearity, solitons bifurcate from a band of non-zero Chern number into the topological band gap with vortex-like structure on a sublattice. We numerically demonstrate the existence stable vortex solitons for a range of parameters and that the lattice soliton dynamics are subject to the anomalous velocity associated with large Berry curvature at the topological…
We predict that the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling, stemming from the TE-TM energy splitting, and the Zeeman effect in semiconductor microcavities supporting exci- ton-polariton quasi-particles results in the appearance of unidirectional linear topological edge states when the top microcavity mirror is patterned to form a truncated dislocated Lieb lattice of cylindrical pillars. Periodic nonlinear edge states are found to emerge from the linear ones. They are strongly localized across the interface and they are remarkably robust in comparison to their counterparts in hexagonal latti…
Topological materials exhibit properties dictated by quantised invariants that make them robust against perturbations. This topological protection is a universal wave phenomenon that applies not only in the context of electrons in solid-state materials but also to photonic systems, ultracold atoms, mechanical systems, circuits, exciton-polaritons and beyond. However, the vast majority of research in these systems has focused on the linear domain, i.e., where inter-particle interactions do not play a role. Here, we experimentally observe solitons -- waves that propagate without changing shape a…
A systematic approach for deriving tight-binding approximations in general longitudinally driven lattices is presented. As prototypes, honeycomb and staggered square lattices are considered. Time-reversal symmetry is broken by varying/rotating the waveguides, longitudinally, along the direction of propagation. Different sublattice rotation and structure are allowed. Linear Floquet bands are constructed for intricate sublattice rotation patterns such as counter rotation, phase offset rotation, as well as different lattice sizes and frequencies. An asymptotic analysis of the edge modes, valid in…
We analyze the existence, stability, and internal modes of gap solitons in nonlinear periodic systems described by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a sinusoidal potential, such as photonic crystals, waveguide arrays, optically-induced photonic lattices, and Bose-Einstein condensates loaded onto an optical lattice. We study bifurcations of gap solitons from the band edges of the Floquet-Bloch spectrum, and show that gap solitons can appear near all lower or upper band edges of the spectrum, for focusing or defocusing nonlinearity, respectively. We show that, in general, two types of gap …
We show theoretically that a photonic topological insulator can support edge solitons that are strongly self-localized and propagate unidirectionally along the lattice edge. The photonic topological insulator consists of a Floquet lattice of coupled helical waveguides, in a medium with local Kerr nonlinearity. The soliton behavior is strongly affected by the topological phase of the linear lattice. The topologically nontrivial phase gives a continuous family of solitons, while the topologically trivial phase gives an embedded soliton that occurs at a single power, and arises from a self-induce…
