We present the first realistic lattice QCD calculation of the $γW$-box diagrams relevant for beta decays. The nonperturbative low-momentum integral of the $γW$ loop is calculated using a lattice QCD simulation, complemented by the perturbative QCD result at high momenta. Using the pion semileptonic decay as an example, we demonstrate the feasibility of the method. By using domain wall fermions at the physical pion mass with multiple lattice spacings and volumes, we obtain the axial $γW$-box correction to the semileptonic pion decay, $\Box_{γW}^{VA}\big|_π=2.830(11)_{\mathrm{stat}}(26)_{\mathrm{sys}}\times10^{-3}$, with the total uncertainty controlled at the level of $\sim1$\%. This study sheds light on the first-principles computation of the $γW$-box correction to the neutron decay, which plays a decisive role in the determination of $|V_{ud}|$.
We present a lattice QCD calculation of the axial $γW$-box diagrams relevant for the kaon semileptonic decays. We utilize a recently proposed method, which connects the electroweak radiative corrections in Sirlin's representation to that in chiral perturbation theory. It allows us to use the axial $γW$-box correction in the SU(3) limit to obtain the low energy constants for chiral perturbation theory. From first principles our results confirm the previously used low energy constants provided by the minimal resonance model with a significant reduction in uncertainties.
CKM matrix is unitary by construction in the standard model(SM). The recent analyses on the first row of CKM matrix show $ \approx 3σ$ tension with unitarity. Nonperturbative calculations of the radiative corrections can reduce the theory uncertainty in CKM matrix elements. Here we compute the electroweak box contribution to the pion and kaon $β$ decays using seven $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ-Clover lattice with various pion mass and lattice spacing. The continuum and chiral limit is taken using the leading dependence on $M_π$ and $a$, where $M_π$ extrapolation is taken to the physical pion mass and $SU(…
The dispersive approach to QCD is briefly overviewed and its application to the assessment of hadronic contributions to electroweak observables is discussed.
We propose a new mechanism to generate the electroweak scale within the framework of QCD, which is extended to include conformally invariant scalar degrees of freedom belonging to a larger irreducible representation of $SU(3)_c$. The electroweak symmetry breaking is triggered dynamically via the Higgs portal by the condensation of the colored scalar field around 1 TeV. The mass of the colored boson is restricted to be 350 GeV $\lesssim m_S\lesssim $ 3 TeV, with the upper bound obtained from perturbative renormalization group evolution. This implies that the colored boson can be produced at LHC…
Quantum chromodynamics is needed to understand quarks and, hence, to determine the quarks' Yukawa couplings from experimental measurements. As a short illustration, the results of three lattice calculations are given.
Nonperturbative QCD corrections are important to many low-energy electroweak observables, for example the muon magnetic moment. However, hadronic corrections also play a significant role at much higher energies due to their impact on the running of standard model parameters, such as the electromagnetic coupling. Currently, these hadronic contributions are accounted for by a combination of experimental measurements, effective field theory techniques and phenomenological modeling but ideally should be calculated from first principles. Recent developments indicate that many of the most important …
We derive a Feynman-Hellmann theorem relating the second-order nucleon energy shift resulting from the introduction of periodic source terms of electromagnetic and isovector axial currents to the parity-odd nucleon structure function $F_3^N$. It is a crucial ingredient in the theoretical study of the $γW$ and $γZ$ box diagrams that are known to suffer from large hadronic uncertainties. We demonstrate that for a given $Q^2$, one only needs to compute a small number of energy shifts in order to obtain the required inputs for the box diagrams. Future lattice calculations based on this approach ma…
As an important step towards a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD analysis of the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), we present for the first time the NLO master formula for the BSM part of this ratio expressed in terms of the Wilson coefficients of all contributing operators evaluated at the electroweak scale. To this end we use the common Weak Effective Theory (WET) basis (the so-called JMS basis) for which tree-level and one-loop matching to the SMEFT are already known. The relevant hadronic matrix elements of BSM operators at th…
Over the last decade, numerical solutions of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) using the technique of lattice QCD have developed to a point where they are beginning to connect fundamental aspects of nuclear physics to the underlying degrees of freedom of the Standard Model. In this review, the progress of lattice QCD studies of nuclear matrix elements of electroweak currents and beyond-Standard-Model operators is summarized, and connections with effective field theories and nuclear models are outlined. Lattice QCD calculations of nuclear matrix elements can provide guidance for low-energy nuclear r…
Both in electroweak theory and QCD, the vacuum in strong magnetic fields develops charged vector condensates once a critical value of the magnetic field is reached. Both ground states have a similar Abrikosov lattice structure and superconducting properties. It is the purpose of these proceedings to put the condensates and their superconducting properties side by side and obtain a global view on this type of condensates. Some peculiar aspects of the superfluidity and backreaction of the condensates are also discussed.
Various thermodynamic quantities for baryon-free matter are calculated by combining the most reliable non-perturbative and perturbative calculations, especially the most recent ones including as many quark flavors as possible. We extend these calculations by including other degrees of freedom (dof), such as photons, neutrinos, leptons, electroweak particles, and Higgs bosons, that allows us to consider the temperatures up to the TeV-scale. The calculations show that similar to QCD, the EW phase transition is also a crossover. We have found that while the equation of state for the hadronic matt…
We demonstrate how to make rigorous predictions for electroweak matrix elements in nuclear systems directly from QCD. More precisely, we show how to determine the short-distance contributions to low-momentum transfer electroweak matrix elements in the two-nucleon sector from lattice QCD. In potential model descriptions of multi-nucleon systems, this is equivalent to uniquely determining the meson-exchange currents, while in the context of nuclear effective field theory, this translates into determining the coefficients of local, gauge-invariant, multi-nucleon-electroweak current operators. The…
The energy dependency (running) of the strength of electromagnetic interactions $α$ plays an important role in precision tests of the Standard Model. The running of the former to the $Z$ pole is an input quantity for global electroweak fits, while the running of the mixing angle is susceptible to the effects of Beyond Standard Model physics, particularly at low energies. We present a computation of the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the running of these electroweak couplings at the non-perturbative level in lattice QCD, in the space-like regime up to $Q^2$ momentum transfer…
The quark-connected leading-order hadronic contributions to the running of the electromagnetic fine structure constant, $α_{\rm QED}$, and the weak mixing angle, $θ_W$, are determined by a four-flavour lattice QCD computation with twisted mass fermions. Full agreement of the results with a phenomenological analysis is observed with an even comparable statistical uncertainty. We show that the uncertainty of the lattice calculation is dominated by systematic effects which then leads to significantly larger errors than obtained by the phenomenological analysis.
We present the calculation of $K\toππ$ matrix elements of electroweak penguin operators {\it i.e.} $Q_7$ and $Q_8$. In the numerical simulation, we use the gauge configurations generated by the combination of $N_f=2$ domain-wall fermions and DBW2 gauge action. From $K\toπ$ and $K\to 0$ matrix elements on the lattice, we construct $K\toππ$ matrix elements at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion by using recent analytic results. Renormalization factor of these matrix elements are obtained by the non-perturbative renormalization technique in RI/MOM scheme. Brief discussion based on our r…
We present results for the ΔS=2 matrix elements which are required to study neutral kaon mixing in the standard model (SM) and beyond (BSM). We also provide leading chiral order results for the matrix elements of the electroweak penguin operators which give the dominant ΔI=3/2 contribution to direct CP violation in K->ππdecays. Our calculations were performed with Neuberger fermions on two sets of quenched Wilson gauge configurations at inverse lattice spacings of approximately 2.2 GeV and 1.5 GeV. All renormalizations were implemented non-perturbatively in the RI/MOM scheme, where we accounte…
