We establish four results concerning connections between actions on separable C*-algebras with Rokhlin-type properties and absorption of the Jiang-Su algebra Z. For actions of residually finite groups or of the reals which have finite Rokhlin dimension with commuting towers, we show that if the action of any nontrivial group element is approximately inner then the C*-algebra acted upon is Z-stable. Without the assumption on approximate innerness, we show that the crossed product has good divisibility properties under mild assumptions. We also establish an analogous result for the generalized tracial Rokhlin property and tracial versions of approximate innerness and Z-absorption for actions of finite groups and of the integers. For actions of a single automorphism which have the Rokhlin property, we show that a condition which is strictly weaker than requiring that some power of the automorphism is approximately inner is sufficient to obtain that the crossed product absorbs Z even when the original algebra is not.
We introduce the notions of approximate innerness and central triviality for endomorphisms on separable von Neumann factors, and we characterize them for hyperfinite factors by Connes-Takesaki modules of endomorphisms and modular endomorphisms which are introduced by Izumi. Our result is a generalization of the corresponding result obtained by Kawahigashi-Sutherland-Takesaki in automorphism case.
We define the tracial Rokhlin property for actions of finite cyclic groups on stably finite simple unital C*-algebras. We prove that when the algebra is in addition simple and has tracial rank zero, then the crossed product again has tracial rank zero. Under a kind of weak approximate innerness assumption and one other technical condition, we prove that if the action has the the tracial Rokhlin property and the crossed product has tracial rank zero, then the original algebra has tracial rank zero. We give examples showing how the tracial Rokhlin property differs from the Rokhlin property of Iz…
We define "tracial" analogs of the Rokhlin property for actions of finite groups, approximate representability of actions of finite abelian groups, and of approximate innerness. We prove four analogs of related "nontracial" results. First, the crossed product of an infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebra with tracial rank zero by an action of a finite group with the tracial Rokhlin property again has tracial rank zero. Second, an outer action of a finite abelian group on an infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebra has the tracial Rokhlin property if and only if i…
We give examples of actions of Z/2Z on AF algebras and AT algebras which demonstrate the differences between the (strict) Rokhlin property and the tracial Rokhlin property, and between (strict) approximate representability and tracial approximate representability. Specific results include the following. We determine exactly when a product type action of Z/2Z on a UHF algebra has the tracial Rokhlin property; in particular, unlike for the strict Rokhlin property, every UHF algebra admits such an action. We prove that Blackadar's action of Z/2Z on the 2^{\infty} UHF algebra, whose crossed produc…
We introduce the spatial Rokhlin property for actions of coexact compact quantum groups on $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras, generalizing the Rokhlin property for both actions of classical compact groups and finite quantum groups. Two key ingredients in our approach are the concept of sequentially split $*$-homomorphisms, and the use of braided tensor products instead of ordinary tensor products. We show that various structure results carry over from the classical theory to this more general setting. In particular, we show that a number of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebraic properties relevant to the classificat…
We introduce and study a Rokhlin-type property for actions of finite groups on (not necessarily unital) C*-algebras. We show that the corresponding crossed product C*-algebras can be locally approximated by C*-algebras that are stably isomorphic to closed two-sided ideals of the given algebra. We then use this result to prove that several classes of C*-algebras are closed under crossed products by finite group actions with this Rokhlin property.
We prove several results of the following general form: automorphisms of (or actions of ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ on) certain kinds of simple separable unital C*-algebras $A$ which have a suitable version of the Rokhlin property are generic among all automorphisms (or actions), or in a suitable class of automorphisms. That is, the ones with the version of the Rokhlin property contain a dense $G_δ$-subset of the set of all such automorphisms (or actions). Specifically, we prove the following. If $A$ is stable under tensoring with the Jiang-Su algebra $Z,$ and has tracial rank zero, then automorphisms wi…
Let A be a unital separable C*-algebra, and D a K_1-injective strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra. We show that if A is D-absorbing, then the crossed product of A by a compact second countable group or by Z or by R is D-absorbing as well, assuming the action satisfying a Rokhlin property. In the case of a compact Rokhlin action we prove a similar statement about approximate divisibility.
We show by construction that when $G$ is an elementary amenable group and $A$ is a unital simple nuclear and tracially approximately divisible $C^*$-algebra, there exists an action $ω$ of $G$ on $A$ with the tracial Rokhlin property in the sense of Matui and Sato. In particular, group actions with this Matui-Sato tracial Rokhlin property always exist for unital simple separable nuclear $C^*$-algebras with tracial rank at most one. If $A$ is simple with rational tracial rank at most one, then the crossed product $A\rtimes_ωG$ is also simple with rational tracial rank at most one.
We characterize the condition for two finite index endomorphisms on an AFD factor to be approximately unitarily equivalent. The characterization is given by using the canonical extension of endomorphisms, which is introduced by Izumi. Our result is a generalization of the characterization of approximate innerness of endomorphisms of the AFD factors, obtained by Kawahiashi--Sutherland--Takesaki and Masuda--Tomatsu. Our proof, which does not depend on the types of factors, is based on recent development on the Rohlin property of flows on von Neumann algebras.
Following the results known in the case of a finite abelian group action on $C\sp*$-algebras we prove the following two theorems; 1. an inclusion $P\subset A$ of (Watatani) index-finite type has the Rokhlin property (is approximately representable) if and only if the dual inclusion is approximately representable (has the Rokhlin property). 2. an inclusion $P\subset A$ of (Watatani) index-finite type has the tracial Rokhlin property (is tracially approximately representable) if and only if the dual inclusion is tracially approximately representable (has the tracial Rokhlin property). Moreover, …
We introduce the notion of the weak tracial approximate representability of a discrete group action on a unital $C^*$-algebra which could have no projections like the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal{Z}$. Then we show a duality between the weak tracial Rokhlin property and the weak tracial approximate representability. More precisely, when $G$ is a finite abelian group and $α:G\curvearrowright A$ is a group action on a unital simple infinite dimensional $C^*$-algebra, we prove that 1. $α$ has the weak tracial Rokhlin property if and only if $\hatα$ has the weak tracial approximate representability. …
We define and examine sequentially split $*$-homomorphisms between $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras and $\mathrm{C}^*$-dynamical systems. For a $*$-homomorphism, the property of being sequentially split can be regarded as an approximate weakening of being a split-injective inclusion of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras. We show for a sequentially split $*$-homomorphism that a multitude of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebraic approximation properties pass from the target algebra to the domain algebra, including virtually all important approximation properties currently used in the classification theory of $\mathrm{C}^*$-alge…
We present a systematic study of the structure of crossed products and fixed point algebras by compact group actions with the Rokhlin property on not necessarily unital C*-algebras. Our main technical result is the existence of an approximate homomorphism from the algebra to its subalgebra of fixed points, which is a left inverse for the canonical inclusion. Upon combining this with results regarding local approximations, we show that a number of classes characterized by inductive limit decompositions with weakly semiprojective building blocks, are closed under formation of crossed products by…
Let $A$ be a unital separable simple amenable $C^*$-algebra with finite tracial rank which satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem (UCT). Suppose $\af$ and $\bt$ are two automorphisms with the Rokhlin property that {induce the same action on the $K$-theoretical data of $A$.} We show that $\af$ and $\bt$ are strongly cocycle conjugate and uniformly approximately conjugate, that is, there exists a sequence of unitaries $\{u_n\}\subset A$ and a sequence of strongly asymptotically inner automorphisms $σ_n$ such that $$ \af={\rm Ad}\, u_n\circ σ_n\circ \bt\circ σ_n^{-1}\andeqn \lim_{n\to\infty}…
We show that every probability-measure-preserving action of a countable amenable group G can be tiled, modulo a null set, using finitely many finite subsets of G ("shapes") with prescribed approximate invariance so that the collection of tiling centers for each shape is Borel. This is a dynamical version of the Downarowicz--Huczek--Zhang tiling theorem for countable amenable groups and strengthens the Ornstein--Weiss Rokhlin lemma. As an application we prove that, for every countably infinite amenable group G, the crossed product of a generic free minimal action of G on the Cantor set is Z-sta…
We show that outer approximately represenbtable actions of a finite cyclic group on UCT Kirchberg algebras satisfy a certain quasi-freeness type property if the corresponding crossed products satisfy the UCT and absorb a suitable UHF algebra tensorially. More concretely, we prove that for such an action there exists an inverse semigroup of homogeneous partial isometries that generates the ambient C*-algebra and whose idempotent semilattice generates a Cartan subalgebra. We prove a similar result for actions of finite cyclic groups with the Rokhlin property on UCT Kirchberg algebras absorbing a…
