Ontology-based query answering (OBQA) augments classical query answering in databases by domain knowledge encoded in an ontology. Systems for OBQA use the ontological knowledge to infer new information that is not explicitly given in the data. Moreover, they usually employ the open-world assumption, which means that knowledge that is not stated explicitly in the data and that is not inferred is not assumed to be true or false. Classical OBQA however considers only a snapshot of the data, which means that information about the temporal evolution of the data is not used for reasoning and hence lost. We investigate temporal conjunctive queries (TCQs) that allow to access temporal data through classical ontologies. In particular, we study combined and data complexity of TCQ entailment for ontologies written in description logics from the extended DL-Lite family. Many of these logics allow for efficient reasoning in the atemporal setting and are successfully applied in practice. We show comprehensive complexity results for temporal reasoning with these logics.
We address the problem of Conjunctive Query Answering (CQA) for the description logic $\dlssx$ ($\shdlssx$, for short) which extends the logic $\dlss$ with Boolean operations on concrete roles and with the product of concepts. The result is obtained by formalizing $\shdlssx$-knowledge bases and $\shdlssx$-conjunctive queries in terms of formulae of the four-level set-theoretic fragment $\flqsr$, which admits a restricted form of quantification on variables of the first three levels and on pair terms. We solve the CQA problem for $\shdlssx$ through a decision procedure for the satisfiability pr…
An algorithm for answering conjunctive queries over SHIQ knowledge bases that is coNP in data complexity is given. The algorithm is based on the tableau algorithm for reasoning with individuals in SHIQ. The blocking conditions of the tableau are weakened in such a way that the set of models the modified algorithm yields suffices to check query entailment. The modified blocking conditions are based on the ones proposed by Levy and Rousset for reasoning with Horn Rules in the description logic ALCNR.

Fuzzy Description Logics (DLs) provide a means for representing vague knowledge about an application domain. In this paper, we study fuzzy extensions of conjunctive queries (CQs) over the DL $\mathcal{SROIQ}$ based on finite chains of degrees of truth. To answer such queries, we extend a well-known technique that reduces the fuzzy ontology to a classical one, and use classical DL reasoners as a black box. We improve the complexity of previous reduction techniques for finitely valued fuzzy DLs, which allows us to prove tight complexity results for answering certain kinds of fuzzy CQs. We conclu…
Answering conjunctive queries (CQs) over $\mathcal{EL}$ knowledge bases (KBs) with complex role inclusions is PSPACE-hard and in PSPACE in certain cases; however, if complex role inclusions are restricted to role transitivity, the tight upper complexity bound has so far been unknown. Furthermore, the existing algorithms cannot handle reflexive roles, and they are not practicable. Finally, the problem is tractable for acyclic CQs and $\mathcal{ELH}$, and NP-complete for unrestricted CQs and $\mathcal{ELHO}$ KBs. In this paper we complete the complexity landscape of CQ answering for several impo…
The chase algorithm is a fundamental tool for query evaluation and query containment under constraints, where the constraints are (sub-classes of) tuple-generating dependencies (TGDs) and equality generating depencies (EGDs). So far, most of the research on this topic has focused on cases where the chase procedure terminates, with some notable exceptions. In this paper we take a general approach, and we propose large classes of TGDs under which the chase does not always terminate. Our languages, in particular, are inspired by guarded logic: we show that by enforcing syntactic properties on the…
We consider the task of enumerating and counting answers to $k$-ary conjunctive queries against relational databases that may be updated by inserting or deleting tuples. We exhibit a new notion of q-hierarchical conjunctive queries and show that these can be maintained efficiently in the following sense. During a linear time preprocessing phase, we can build a data structure that enables constant delay enumeration of the query results; and when the database is updated, we can update the data structure and restart the enumeration phase within constant time. For the special case of self-join fre…

In logic-based knowledge representation, query answering has essentially replaced mere satisfiability checking as the inferencing problem of primary interest. For knowledge bases in the basic description logic ALC, the computational complexity of conjunctive query (CQ) answering is well known to be ExpTime-complete and hence not harder than satisfiability. This does not change when the logic is extended by certain features (such as counting or role hierarchies), whereas adding others (inverses, nominals or transitivity together with role-hierarchies) turns CQ answering exponentially harder. We…
In ontology-mediated query answering, access to incomplete data sources is mediated by a conceptual layer constituted by an ontology. To correctly compute answers to queries, it is necessary to perform complex reasoning over the constraints expressed by the ontology. In the literature, there exists a multitude of techniques incorporating the ontological knowledge into queries. However, few of these approaches were designed for comprehensibility of the query answers. In this article, we try to bridge these two qualities by adapting a proof framework originally applied to axiom entailment for co…
An uncertain database is defined as a relational database in which primary keys need not be satisfied. A repair (or possible world) of such database is obtained by selecting a maximal number of tuples without ever selecting two distinct tuples with the same primary key value. For a Boolean query q, the decision problem CERTAINTY(q) takes as input an uncertain database db and asks whether q is satisfied by every repair of db. Our main focus is on acyclic Boolean conjunctive queries without self-join. Previous work has introduced the notion of (directed) attack graph of such queries, and has pro…
An inconsistent database is a database that violates one or more integrity constraints, such as functional dependencies. Consistent Query Answering is a rigorous and principled approach to the semantics of queries posed against inconsistent databases. The consistent answers to a query on an inconsistent database is the intersection of the answers to the query on every repair, i.e., on every consistent database that differs from the given inconsistent one in a minimal way. Computing the consistent answers of a fixed conjunctive query on a given inconsistent database can be a coNP-hard problem, …

An ontology language for ontology mediated query answering (OMQA-language) is universal for a family of OMQA-languages if it is the most expressive one among this family. In this paper, we focus on three families of tractable OMQA-languages, including first-order rewritable languages and languages whose data complexity of the query answering is in AC0 or PTIME. On the negative side, we prove that there is, in general, no universal language for each of these families of languages. On the positive side, we propose a novel property, the locality, to approximate the first-order rewritability, and …
We consider the following query answering problem: Given a Boolean conjunctive query and a theory in the Horn loosely guarded fragment, the aim is to determine whether the query is entailed by the theory. In this paper, we present a resolution decision procedure for the loosely guarded fragment, and use such a procedure to answer Boolean conjunctive queries against the Horn loosely guarded fragment. The Horn loosely guarded fragment subsumes classes of rules that are prevalent in ontology-based query answering, such as Horn ALCHOI and guarded existential rules. Additionally, we identify star q…
This note closes a minor gap in the literature on the counting complexity of conjunctive queries by showing that queries that are not free-connex do not have a linear time counting algorithm under standard complexity assumptions. More generally, it is shown that the so-called quantified star size is a lower bound for the exponent in the runtime of any counting algorithm for conjunctive queries.
So-called combined approaches answer a conjunctive query over a description logic ontology in three steps: first, they materialise certain consequences of the ontology and the data; second, they evaluate the query over the data; and third, they filter the result of the second phase to eliminate unsound answers. Such approaches were developed for various members of the DL-Lite and the EL families of languages, but none of them can handle ontologies containing nominals. In our work, we bridge this gap and present a combined query answering approach for ELHO---a logic that contains all features o…
We study the complexity of consistent query answering on databases that may violate primary key constraints. A repair of such a database is any consistent database that can be obtained by deleting a minimal set of tuples. For every Boolean query q, CERTAINTY(q) is the problem that takes a database as input and asks whether q evaluates to true on every repair. In [KW17], the authors show that for every self-join-free Boolean conjunctive query q, the problem CERTAINTY(q) is either in P or coNP-complete, and it is decidable which of the two cases applies. In this paper, we sharpen this result by …

We present a unified approach to (both finite and unrestricted) worst-case optimal entailment of (unions of) conjunctive queries (U)CQs in the wide class of "locally-forward" description logics. The main technique that we employ is a generalisation of Lutz's spoiler technique, originally developed for CQ entailment in ALCHQ. Our result closes numerous gaps present in the literature, most notably implying ExpTime-completeness of (U)CQ-querying for any superlogic of ALC contained in ALCHbregQ, and, as we believe, is abstract enough to be employed as a black-box in many new scenarios.
Description logics are knowledge representation formalisms that provide the formal underpinning of the semantic web and in particular of the $\text{OWL}$ Ontology Web Language. In this paper we investigate the expressive power of logic $\text{DL-Lite}_{R,\sqcap}$, and some of its computational properties. We rely on simulations to characterize the absolute expressive power of $\text{DL-Lite}_{R,\sqcap}$ as a concept language, and to show that disjunction is not expressible. We also show that no simulation-based closure property exists for $\text{DL-Lite}_{R,\sqcap}$ assertions. Finally, we sho…
Conjunctive database queries have been extended with a mechanism for object creation to capture important applications such as data exchange, data integration, and ontology-based data access. Object creation generates new object identifiers in the result, that do not belong to the set of constants in the source database. The new object identifiers can be also seen as Skolem terms. Hence, object-creating conjunctive queries can also be regarded as restricted second-order tuple-generating dependencies (SO tgds), considered in the data exchange literature. In this paper, we focus on the class of …
Conjunctive query answering over expressive Horn Description Logic ontologies is a relevant and challenging problem which, in some cases, can be addressed by application of the chase algorithm. In this paper, we define a novel acyclicity notion which provides a sufficient condition for termination of the restricted chase over Horn-SRIQ TBoxes. We show that this notion generalizes most of the existing acyclicity conditions (both theoretically and empirically). Furthermore, this new acyclicity notion gives rise to a very efficient reasoning procedure. We provide evidence for this by providing a …
Matching dependencies (MDs) have been recently introduced as declarative rules for entity resolution (ER), i.e. for identifying and resolving duplicates in relational instance $D$. A set of MDs can be used as the basis for a possibly non-deterministic mechanism that computes a duplicate-free instance from $D$. The possible results of this process are the clean, "minimally resolved instances" (MRIs). There might be several MRIs for $D$, and the "resolved answers" to a query are those that are shared by all the MRIs. We investigate the problem of computing resolved answers. We look at various se…

Existential rules, also known as data dependencies in Databases, have been recently rediscovered as a promising family of languages for Ontology-based Query Answering. In this paper, we prove that disjunctive embedded dependencies exactly capture the class of recursively enumerable ontologies in Ontology-based Conjunctive Query Answering (OCQA). Our expressive completeness result does not rely on any built-in linear order on the database. To establish the expressive completeness, we introduce a novel semantic definition for OCQA ontologies. We also show that neither the class of disjunctive tu…

Ontology-mediated query answering (OMQA) is a promising approach to data access and integration that has been actively studied in the knowledge representation and database communities for more than a decade. The vast majority of work on OMQA focuses on conjunctive queries, whereas more expressive queries that feature counting or other forms of aggregation remain largely unex-plored. In this paper, we introduce a general form of counting query, relate it to previous proposals, and study the complexity of answering such queries in the presence of DL-Lite ontologies. As it follows from existing w…
Since 2005, significant progress has been made in the problem of Consistent Query Answering (CQA) with respect to primary keys. In this problem, the input is a database instance that may violate one or more primary key constraints. A repair is defined as a maximal subinstance that satisfies all primary keys. Given a Boolean query q, the question then is whether q holds true in every repair. So far, theoretical research in this field has not addressed the combination of primary key and foreign key constraints, despite the importance of referential integrity in database systems. This paper addre…

We introduce and investigate the expressive description logic (DL) ALCSCC++, in which the global and local cardinality constraints introduced in previous papers can be mixed. On the one hand, we prove that this does not increase the complexity of satisfiability checking and other standard inference problems. On the other hand, the satisfiability problem becomes undecidable if inverse roles are added to the languages. In addition, even without inverse roles, conjunctive query entailment in this DL turns out to be undecidable. We prove that decidability of querying can be regained if global and …
Evaluating a Boolean conjunctive query Q against a guarded first-order theory F is equivalent to checking whether "F and not Q" is unsatisfiable. This problem is relevant to the areas of database theory and description logic. Since Q may not be guarded, well known results about the decidability, complexity, and finite-model property of the guarded fragment do not obviously carry over to conjunctive query answering over guarded theories, and had been left open in general. By investigating finite guarded bisimilar covers of hypergraphs and relational structures, and by substantially generalising…
Parity constraints, common in application domains such as circuit verification, bounded model checking, and logical cryptanalysis, are not necessarily most efficiently solved if translated into conjunctive normal form. Thus, specialized parity reasoning techniques have been developed in the past for propagating parity constraints. This paper studies the questions of deciding whether unit propagation or equivalence reasoning is enough to achieve full propagation in a given parity constraint set. Efficient approximating tests for answering these questions are developed. It is also shown that equ…
Conjunctive query (CQ) answering over knowledge bases is an important reasoning task. However, with expressive ontology languages such as OWL, query answering is computationally very expensive. The PAGOdA system addresses this issue by using a tractable reasoner to compute lower and upper-bound approximations, falling back to a fully-fledged OWL reasoner only when these bounds don't coincide. The effectiveness of this approach critically depends on the quality of the approximations, and in this paper we explore a technique for computing closer approximations via RSA, an ontology language that …
We investigate the query evaluation problem for fixed queries over fully dynamic databases where tuples can be inserted or deleted. The task is to design a dynamic data structure that can immediately report the new result of a fixed query after every database update. We consider unions of conjunctive queries (UCQs) and focus on the query evaluation tasks testing (decide whether an input tuple belongs to the query result), enumeration (enumerate, without repetition, all tuples in the query result), and counting (output the number of tuples in the query result). We identify three increasingly re…
In ontology-mediated query answering, access to incomplete data sources is mediated by a conceptual layer constituted by an ontology, which can be formulated in a description logic (DL) or using existential rules. In the literature, there exists a multitude of complex techniques for incorporating ontological knowledge into queries. However, few of these approaches were designed for explainability of the query answers. We tackle this challenge by adapting an existing proof framework toward conjunctive query answering, based on the notion of universal models. We investigate the data and combined…

In order to meet usability requirements, most logic-based applications provide explanation facilities for reasoning services. This holds also for Description Logics, where research has focused on the explanation of both TBox reasoning and, more recently, query answering. Besides explaining the presence of a tuple in a query answer, it is important to explain also why a given tuple is missing. We address the latter problem for instance and conjunctive query answering over DL-Lite ontologies by adopting abductive reasoning; that is, we look for additions to the ABox that force a given tuple to b…

In ontology-based data access (OBDA), the classical database is enhanced with an ontology in the form of logical assertions generating new intensional knowledge. A powerful form of such logical assertions is the tuple-generating dependencies (TGDs), also called existential rules, where Horn rules are extended by allowing existential quantifiers to appear in the rule heads. In this paper we introduce a new language called loop restricted (LR) TGDs (existential rules), which are TGDs with certain restrictions on the loops embedded in the underlying rule set. We study the complexity of this new l…
Ontological queries are evaluated against an ontology rather than directly on a database. The evaluation and optimization of such queries is an intriguing new problem for database research. In this paper we discuss two important aspects of this problem: query rewriting and query optimization. Query rewriting consists of the compilation of an ontological query into an equivalent query against the underlying relational database. The focus here is on soundness and completeness. We review previous results and present a new rewriting algorithm for rather general types of ontological constraints. In…
We develop a query answering system, where at the core of the work there is an idea of query answering by rewriting. For this purpose we extend the DL DL-Lite with the ability to support n-ary relations, obtaining the DL DLR-Lite, which is still polynomial in the size of the data. We devise a flexible way of mapping the conceptual level to the relational level, which provides the users an SQL-like query language over the conceptual schema. The rewriting technique adds value to conventional query answering techniques, allowing to formulate simpler queries, with the ability to infer additional i…
Modern conflict-driven clause learning (CDCL) SAT solvers are very good in solving conjunctive normal form (CNF) formulas. However, some application problems involve lots of parity (xor) constraints which are not necessarily efficiently handled if translated into CNF. This paper studies solving CNF formulas augmented with xor-clauses in the DPLL(XOR) framework where a CDCL SAT solver is coupled with a separate xor-reasoning module. New techniques for analyzing xor-reasoning derivations are developed, allowing one to obtain smaller CNF clausal explanations for xor-implied literals and also to d…
Ontology-based query answering (OBQA) asks whether a Boolean conjunctive query is satisfied by all models of a logical theory consisting of a relational database paired with an ontology. The introduction of existential rules (i.e., Datalog rules extended with existential quantifiers in rule-heads) as a means to specify the ontology gave birth to Datalog+/-, a framework that has received increasing attention in the last decade, with focus also on decidability and finite controllability to support effective reasoning. Five basic decidable fragments have been singled out: linear, weakly-acyclic, …
Since Chen's Entity-Relationship (ER) model, conceptual modeling has been playing a fundamental role in relational data design. In this paper we consider an extended ER (EER) model enriched with cardinality constraints, disjointness assertions, and is-a relations among both entities and relationships. In this setting, we consider the case of incomplete data, which is likely to occur, for instance, when data from different sources are integrated. In such a context, we address the problem of providing correct answers to conjunctive queries by reasoning on the schema. Based on previous results ab…
