Scan-less full-field fluorescence-lifetime dual-comb microscopy using two-dimensional spectral mapping and frequency multiplexing of dual-optical-comb beats
Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is a powerful tool for quantitative fluorescence imaging because fluorescence lifetime is independent of concentration of fluorescent molecules or excitation/detection efficiency and is robust to photobleaching. However, since FLIM is based on point-to-point measurements, mechanical scanning of a focal spot is needed for forming an image, which hampers rapid imaging. In this article, we demonstrate scan-less full-field FLIM based on a one-to-one correspondence between two-dimensional (2D) image pixels and frequency-multiplexed RF signals. A vast number of dual-optical-comb beats between dual optical frequency combs is effectively adopted for 2D spectral mapping and high-density frequency multiplexing in radio-frequency region. Bimodal images of fluorescence amplitude and lifetime are obtained with high quantitativeness from amplitude and phase spectra of fluorescence RF comb modes without the need for mechanical scanning. The proposed method will be useful for rapid quantitative fluorescence imaging in life science.
Fluorescence imaging is the most widely used method for unveiling the molecular composition of biological specimens. However, the weak optical emission of fluorescent probes and the tradeoff between imaging speed and sensitivity is problematic for acquiring blur-free images of fast phenomena, such as sub-millisecond biochemical dynamics in live cells and tissues, and cells flowing at high speed. We report a solution that achieves real-time pixel readout rates one order of magnitude faster than a modern electron multiplier charge coupled device (EMCCD) - the gold standard in high-speed fluoresc…
In this paper, we demonstrate the polarization-multiplexed system capable of generating two stable optical frequency combs with tunable frequency differences and a large extinction ratio. Also, the polarization dynamics of a dual-frequency comb generated from a single mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser are experimentally studied. The obtained results will extend the application to areas such as polarization spectroscopy and dual-comb-based polarimetry.
Helical gratings (HGs) have an achievement of flexible mode conversion for fibre guided orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. Sampled reflection HGs can realise the generation and conversion of OAM mode with comb spectra. They can be used to simultaneously filter wavelengths and convert modes, and thus may be applied to the hybrid multiplexing technology with wavelength division multiplexing and mode division multiplexing.
Optical frequency combs are crucial for both fundamental science and applications demanding wide frequency spanning and ultra-precision resolutions. Recent advancements of nonlinear Kerr effect based optical frequency combs in microcavities open up new opportunities in a compact platform, however, internal cavity-enhanced nonlinearities are still unclear. Here we demonstrate transient nonlinear dynamics during optical frequency comb formation inside a Kerr microcavity. We show that gain spiking forms due to nonlinear phase modulation, causing comb lines' self-detuning nearby a cavity resonance…
We report on polarization combining 2D grating couplers (2D GCs) on amorphous Si:H, fabricated in the backend of line of a photonic BiCMOS platform. The 2D GCs can be used as an interface of a hybrid silicon photonic coherent transmitter, which can be implemented on bulk Si wafers. The fabricated 2D GCs operate in the telecom C-band and show an experimental coupling efficiency of -5 dB with a wafer variation of +/-1.2 dB. Possibilities for efficiency enhancement and improved performance stability in future design generations are outlined and extension towards O-band devices is investigated as …
Dual-comb interferometry utilizes two optical frequency combs to map the optical field's spectrum to a radio-frequency signal without using moving parts, allowing improved speed and accuracy. However, the method is compounded by the complexity and demanding stability associated with operating multiple laser frequency combs. To overcome these challenges, we demonstrate simultaneous generation of multiple frequency combs from a single optical microresonator and a single continuous-wave laser. Similar to space-division multiplexing, we generate several dissipative Kerr soliton states - circulatin…
Dual-comb spectroscopy is a rapidly developing technique enabling ultraprecise broadband optical diagnostics of atoms and molecules. This powerful tool typically requires two phase-locked femtosecond lasers, yet it has been shown that it can be realized without any stabilization if the combs are generated from a single laser cavity. Still, unavoidable intrinsic relative phase-fluctuations always set a limit on the precision of any spectroscopic measurements, hitherto limiting the applicability of bulk dual-comb lasers for mode-resolved studies. Here, we demonstrate a versatile concept for low-…
Optical communication systems are able to send the information from one user to another in light beams that travel through the free space or optical fibers, therefore how to send larger amounts of information in smaller periods of time is a long term concern, one promising way is to use multiplexing of photon's different degrees of freedoms to parallel handle the large amounts of information in multiple channels independently. In this work, by combining the wavelength and time division multiplexing technologies, we prepare a multifrequency mode time bin entangled photon pair source at differen…
Acousto-optic devices utilize the overlap of acoustic and optical fields to facilitate photon-phonon interactions. For tightly confined optical and acoustic fields, such as the sub-wavelength scales achievable in integrated devices, this interaction is enhanced. Broadband operation which fully benefits from this enhancement requires light and sound to co-propagate in the same cross-section, a geometry currently lacking in the field. We introduce the `acoustic-optical multiplexer', which enables this co-linear geometry, and demonstrate through simulations a proof-of-concept design. Using suspen…
We propose a novel space division multiplexing (SDM) technique based on spatial phase encoding, which may provide a new perspective beyond the conventional SDM in free space optical communications, such as multiplexing of orbital angular momentum (OAM). In our scheme, Gaussian beams are multiplexed with a set of spatial phase masks, and then transmitted in the Fourier domain via spherical lens. And another phase masks with matched patterns sandwiched by two lenses are used to de-multiplex the corresponding channels. Three different phase masks, namely, planar linear encoding, radial linear enc…
We demonstrate seamless channel multiplexing and high bitrate superchannel transmission of coherent optical orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (CO-OFDM) data signals utilizing a dissipative Kerr soliton (DKS) frequency comb generated in an on-chip microcavity. Aided by comb line multiplication through Nyquist pulse modulation, the high stability and mutual coherence among mode-locked Kerr comb lines are exploited for the first time to eliminate the guard intervals between communication channels and achieve full spectral density bandwidth utilization. Spectral efficiency as high as 2.62…
Photonic implementations of reservoir computing (RC) promise to reach ultra-high bandwidth of operation with moderate training efforts. Several optoelectronic demonstrations reported state of the art performances for hard tasks as speech recognition, object classification and time series prediction. Scaling these systems in space and time faces challenges in control complexity, size and power demand, which can be relieved by integrated optical solutions. Silicon photonics can be the disruptive technology to achieve this goal. However, the experimental demonstrations have been so far focused on…
Optical frequency combs enable all-solid-state spectrometers that will trigger a breakthrough in miniaturization and on-chip integration of mid-infrared sensing technology. Interband cascade lasers (ICLs) are an ideal candidate for practical implementations due to their low power consumption and zero-bias detection functionality. Here, we demonstrate the generation of self-starting ICL frequency combs. We show that the gain is fast enough to respond to beating of the intracavity field, which hinders the formation of short pulses. Instead, the ICL operates in a comb state, where the phases of t…
Reservoir computing is a brain inspired approach for information processing, well suited to analogue implementations. We report a photonic implementation of a reservoir computer that exploits frequency domain multiplexing to encode neuron states. The system processes 25 comb lines simultaneously (i.e. 25 neurons), at a rate of 20 MHz. We illustrate performances on two standard benchmark tasks: channel equalization and time series forecasting. We also demonstrate that frequency multiplexing allows output weights to be implemented in the optical domain, through optical attenuation. We discuss th…
Single-cavity dual-comb lasers are a new class of ultrafast lasers which have a wide possible application space including pump-probe sampling, optical ranging, and gas absorption spectroscopy. However, to this date laser cavity multiplexing usually came to the trade-off in laser performance or relative timing noise suppression. We present a new method for multiplexing a single laser cavity to support a pair of noise-correlated modes. These modes share all intracavity components and take a near-common path, but do not overlap on any active elements. We implement the method with an 80-MHz laser …
A method is proposed to experimentally determine principal modes for mode division multiplexing in a multimode optical fiber, i.e., increasing optical fiber information capacity via higher-order transverse eigenmodes. Principal modes are a special linear combination of eigenmodes that do not exhibit mode dispersion up to first order in frequency. This method is based on an SU(N) representation of mode dispersion whereby the generators of the corresponding SU(N) Lie algebra, i.e., generalized Gell-Mann matrices, predict higher-order Stokes parameters which can be used to measure principal modes…
We propose a practical quantum cryptographic scheme which combines high information capacity, such as provided by high-dimensional quantum entanglement, with the simplicity of a two-dimensional Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell test for security verification. By applying a state combining entanglement in a two-dimensional degree of freedom, such as photon polarization, with high-dimensional correlations in another degree of freedom, such as photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) or path, the scheme provides a considerably simplified route towards security verification in quantum key distri…
Long-distance measurements (10 m - 1000 m) with an accuracy of 10-7 is a challenge for many applications. We show that it is achievable with Frequency Shifted Feedback (FSF) laser interferometry technique, provided that the determination of the radio frequency beat order be made without ambiguity and on a time scale compatible with atmospheric applications. Using the pulsed-FSF laser that we developed for laser guide star application, we propose and test, up to 240 m, a simple method for measuring the beat order in real time. The moving-comb and Yatsenko models are also discussed. The first of…
We introduce a universal method to optically induce multiperiodic photonic complex superstructures bearing two-dimensional (2D) refractive index modulations over several centimeters of elongation. These superstructures result from the accomplished superposition of 2D fundamental periodic structures. To find the specific sets of fundamentals, we combine particular spatial frequencies of the respective Fourier series expansions, which enables us to use nondiffracting beams in the experiment showing periodic 2D intensity modulation in order to successively develop the desired multiperiodic struct…
We report on the engineering of broadband quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) emitting at Terahertz (THz) frequencies, which exploit a heterogeneous active region scheme and have a current density dynamic range (Jdr) of 3.2, significantly larger than the state of the art, over a 1.3 THz bandwidth. We demonstrate that the devised broadband lasers operate as THz optical frequency comb synthesizers in continuous wave, with a maximum optical output power of 4 mW (0.73 mW in the comb regime). Measurement of the intermode beatnote map reveals a clear dispersion-compensated frequency comb regime extending …
The phase information provided by the beat note between frequency combs and two continuous-wave lasers is used to extrapolate the phase evolution of comb modes found in a spectral region obtained via nonlinear broadening. This thereafter enables using interferogram self-correction to fully retrieve the coherence of a dual-comb beat note between two independent fiber lasers. This approach allows to forego the $f - 2f$ self-referencing of both combs, which is a significant simplification. Broadband near-infrared methane spectroscopy has been conducted as a demonstration of the simplified system'…
Encoding of spectral information onto monochrome imaging cameras is of interest for wavelength multiplexing and hyperspectral imaging applications. Here, the complex spatio-spectral response of a disordered material is used to demonstrate retrieval of a number of discrete wavelengths over a wide spectral range. Strong, diffuse light scattering in a semiconductor nanowire mat is used to achieve a highly compact spectrometer of micrometer thickness, transforming different wavelengths into distinct speckle patterns with nanometer sensitivity. Spatial multiplexing is achieved through the use of a …
In this Letter, we investigate the feasibility and performance of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communications using an integrated dissipative Kerr soliton micro-comb as the multi-channel laser source. First, we confirm that soliton microcomb pumped directly by a DFB laser self-injection locked to the host micro-cavity has sufficiently low frequency and amplitude noises to encode advanced data formats. Second, perfect soliton crystals are exploited to boost the power level of each microcomb line, so that they can be directly used for data modulation excluding pre-amplification.…
The advent of optical frequency standards with ultimate uncertainties in the low 1x10$^{-18}$ requires femtosecond frequency combs to support a similar level of resolution in the spectral transfer and the computation of optical frequency ratios. The related experimental challenges grow together with the number of optical frequencies to be measured simultaneously, as in many cases the comb's optical power does not allow reliable beatnote counting or tracking in all the spectral regions of interest. Here we describe the use of a track-and-hold amplifier to implement the gated detection, a previo…
When imaging moving objects, single-pixel imaging produces motion blur. This paper proposes a new single-pixel imaging method, which can achieve anti-motion blur imaging of a fast-moving object. The geometric moment patterns and Hadamard patterns are used to alternately encode the position information and the image information of the object with time-division multiplexing. In the reconstruction process, the object position information is extracted independently and combining motion-compensation reconstruction algorithm to decouple the object motion from image information. As a result, the anti…
Fiber-optical networks are a crucial telecommunication infrastructure in society. Wavelength division multiplexing allows for transmitting parallel data streams over the fiber bandwidth, and coherent detection enables the use of sophisticated modulation formats and electronic compensation of signal impairments. In the future, optical frequency combs may replace multiple lasers used for the different wavelength channels. We demonstrate two novel signal processing schemes that take advantage of the broadband phase coherence of optical frequency combs. This approach allows for a more efficient es…
We report a homogeneous quantum cascade laser (QCL) emitting at Terahertz (THz) frequencies, with a total spectral emission of about 0.6 THz centered around 3.3 THz, a current density dynamic range of Jdr=1.53, and a continuous wave output power of 7 mW. The analysis of the intermode beatnote unveils that the devised laser operates as optical frequency comb (FC) synthesizer over the whole laser operational regime, with up to 36 optically active laser modes delivering ~ 200 uW of optical power per comb tooth, a power level unreached so far in any THz QCL FC. A stable and narrow single beatnote,…
Microresonator-based frequency combs are strong contenders as light sources for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). Recent demonstrations have shown the potential of microresonator combs for replacing tens of WDM lasers with a single laser-pumped device. These experiments relied on microresonators displaying anomalous dispersion. Devices operating in the normal dispersion offer the prospect of attaining high power conversion efficiency - an aspect that will be crucial in the future for enabling energy-efficient coherent communications with higher order modulation formats or lighting severa…
Orthogonal temporal modes (TMs) form a field-orthogonal, continuous-variable degree of freedom that is in principle infinite dimensional, and create a promising resource for quantum information science and technology. The ideal quantum pulse gate (QPG) is a device that multiplexes and demultiplexes temporally orthogonal optical pulses that have the same carrier frequency, spatial mode, and polarization. The QPG is the chief enabling technology for usage of orthogonal temporal modes as a basis for high-dimensional quantum information storage and processing. The greatest hurdle for QPG implement…
A mathematical description of heterodyne measurement of an optical frequency comb is presented. It is shown that for a signal beam containing many frequency teeth, the amplitude and phase of each tooth can be determined from the beatnote generated when the signal is interfered with a local oscillator with known offset frequency.
