Significant efforts have focused on the magnetic excitations of relativistic Mott insulators, predicted to realize the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). This exactly solvable model involves a highly entangled state resulting from bond-dependent Ising interactions that produce excitations which are non-local in terms of spin flips. A key challenge in real materials is identifying the relative size of the non-Kitaev terms and their role in the emergence or suppression of fractional excitations. Here, we identify the energy and temperature boundaries of non-Kitaev interactions by direct comparison of the Raman susceptibility of RuCl3 with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results for the Kitaev QSLs. Moreover, we further confirm the fractional nature of the magnetic excitations, which is given by creating a pair of fermionic quasiparticles. Interestingly, this fermionic response remains valid in the non-Kitaev range. Our results and focus on the use of the Raman susceptibility provide a stringent new test for future theoretical and experimental studies of QSLs.
We study on transport and magnetic properties of hydrated and lithium-intercalated $α$-RuCl$_3$, Li$_x$RuCl$_3 \cdot y$H$_2$O, for investigating the effect on mobile-carrier doping into candidate materials for a realization of a Kitaev model. From thermogravitometoric and one-dimensional electron map analyses, we find two crystal structures of this system, that is, mono-layer hydrated Li$_x$RuCl$_3 \cdot y$H$_2$O~$(x\approx0.56, y\approx1.3)$ and bi-layer hydrated Li$_x$RuCl$_3 \cdot y$H$_2$O~$(x\approx0.56, y\approx3.9)$. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity shows a temper…
The magnetic insulator $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a promising candidate to realize Kitaev interactions on a quasi-2D honeycomb lattice. We perform extensive susceptibility measurements on single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, including angle-dependence of the in-plane longitudinal and transverse susceptibilities, which reveal a unidirectional anisotropy within the honeycomb plane. By comparing the experimental results to a high-temperature expansion of a Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Γ$ spin Hamiltonian with bond anisotropy, we find excellent agreement with the observed phase shift and periodicity of the angle-resol…
The ruthenium halide $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a promising candidate for a Kitaev spin liquid. However, the microscopic model describing $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is still debated partly because of a lack of analogue materials for $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, which prevents tracking of electronic properties as functions of controlled interaction parameters. Here, we report a successful synthesis of RuBr$_{3}$. The material RuBr$_{3}$~possesses BiI$_3$-type structure (space group: $R\overline{3}$) where Ru$^{3+}$ form an ideal honeycomb lattice. Although RuBr$_{3}$ has a negative Weiss temperature, it undergoes a zigzag antif…
Kitaev-type interactions between neighbouring magnetic moments emerge in the honeycomb material $α$-RuCl3. It is debated however whether these Kitaev interactions are ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. With electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) we study the lowest excitation across the Mott-Hubbard gap, which involves a d4 triplet in the final state and therefore is sensitive to nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations. At low temperature the spectral weight of these triplets is strongly enhanced, in accordance with optical data. We show that the magnetic correlation function that determine…
Topological states of matter such as quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are of great interest because of their remarkable predicted properties including protection of quantum information and the emergence of Majorana fermions. Such QSLs, however, have proven difficult to identify experimentally. The most promising approach is to study their exotic nature via the wave-vector and intensity dependence of their dynamical response in neutron scattering. A major search has centered on iridate materials which are proposed to realize the celebrated Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice - a prototypical topolog…
We report the discovery of an intriguing pressure-driven phase transformation in the layered Kitaev-material $α$-RuCl$_3$. By analyzing both the Bragg scattering as well as the diffuse scattering of high-quality single crystals, we reveal a collective reorganization of the layer stacking throughout the crystal. Importantly, this transformation also effects the structure of the RuCl$_3$ honeycomb layers, which acquire a high trigonal symmetry with a single Ru--Ru distance of 3.41Å and a single Ru--Cl--Ru bond angle of 92.8°. Hydrostatic pressure therefore allows to tune the structure of $α$-RuC…
Recently, there have been increasingly hot debates on whether there exists a quantum spin liquid in the Kitaev honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ in high magnetic field. To investigate this issue, we perform the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on the single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$ down to 80 mK and up to 9 T. Our experiments clearly show a field-induced phase transition occurring at $H_c$ $\approx$ 7.5 T, above which the zigzag magnetic order is completely suppressed. The minimum of thermal conductivity at 7.5 T is attributed to the strong scattering of phonons by the magnet…
$α$-RuCl$_3$ is drawing much attention as a promising candidate Kitaev quantum spin liquid. However, despite intensive research efforts, controversy remains about the form of the basic interactions governing the physics of this material. Even the sign of the Kitaev interaction (the bond-dependent anisotropic interaction responsible for Kitaev physics) is still under debate, with conflicting results from theoretical and experimental studies. The significance of the symmetric off-diagonal exchange interaction (referred to as the $Γ$ term) is another contentious question. Here, we present resonan…

Raman scattering has been employed to investigate lattice and magnetic excitations of the honeycomb Kitaev material $α$-RuCl$_3$ and its Heisenberg counterpart CrCl$_3$. Our phonon Raman spectra give evidence for a first-order structural transition from a monoclinic to a rhombohedral structure for both compounds. Significantly, only $α$-RuCl$_3$ features a large thermal hysteresis, consistent with the formation of a wide phase of coexistence. In the related temperature interval of $70-170$ K, we observe a hysteretic behavior of magnetic excitations as well. The stronger magnetic response in th…
Heat transport mediated by Majorana edge modes in a magnetic insulator leads to a half-integer thermal quantum Hall conductance, which has recently been reported for the two-dimensional honeycomb material $α$-RuCl$_3$. While the conventional electronic Hall effect requires a perpendicular magnetic field, we find that this is not the case in $α$-RuCl$_3$. Strikingly, the thermal Hall plateau appears even for a magnetic field with no out-of-plane components. The field-angular variation of the quantized thermal Hall conductance has the same sign structure of the topological Chern number, which is…
In the pursuit of developing routes to enhance magnetic Kitaev interactions in α-RuCl3, as well as probing doping effects, we investigate the electronic properties of α-RuCl3 in proximity to graphene. We study α-RuCl3/graphene heterostructures via ab initio density functional theory calculations, Wannier projection and non-perturbative exact diagonalization methods. We show that α-RuCl3 becomes strained when placed on graphene and charge transfer occurs between the two layers, making α-RuCl3 (graphene) lightly electron-doped (hole-doped). This gives rise to an insulator to metal transition in …
Magnetoelastic interaction couples spin and lattice degrees of freedom and plays a key role in thermal transport properties of magnetic insulators. In the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, the low energy excitations are charge neutral Majorana fermions, which transform the magnetoelasctic interaction into Majorana-phonon scattering. Motivated by anomalous thermal properties of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate RuCl$_3$, in this letter, we combine meV resolution inelastic x-ray scattering and theoretical calculation to examine the Majorana-phonon scattering. We analytically derive the velocity…
$α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a major candidate for the realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, but its zigzag antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures indicates deviations from the Kitaev model. We have quantified the spin Hamiltonian of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ by a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study at the Ru $L_{3}$ absorption edge. In the paramagnetic state, the quasi-elastic intensity of magnetic excitations has a broad maximum around the zone center without any local maxima at the zigzag magnetic Bragg wavevectors. This finding implies that the zigzag order is fragile and readily destabilize…
Recently considerable excitement has arisen due to the experimental observation of a field-induced spin liquid phase in the compound $α$-RuCl$_3$. However, the nature of this putative spin liquid phase and the relevant microscopic model Hamiltonian remain still unclear. In this work, we address these questions by performing large-scale numerical simulations of a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model proposed to describe the physics of $α$-RuCl$_3$. While there is no evidence for an intermediate phase for in-plane magnetic fields, our results strongly suggest that a stable intermediate spin liqui…
Kitaev interactions underlying a quantum spin liquid have been long sought, but experimental data from which their strengths can be determined directly is still lacking. Here, by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$, we observe spin-wave spectra with a gap of $\sim$2 meV around the M point of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. We derive an effective-spin model in the strong-coupling limit based on energy bands obtained from first-principle calculations, and find that the anisotropic Kitaev interaction $K$ term and the isotropic…
The Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice predicts a paradigmatic quantum spin liquid (QSL) exhibiting Majorana Fermion excitations. The insight that Kitaev physics might be realized in practice has stimulated investigations of candidate materials, recently including alpha-RuCl3. In all the systems studied to date, non-Kitaev interactions induce magnetic order at low temperature. However, in-plane magnetic fields of roughly 8 Tesla suppress the long-range magnetic order in alpha-RuCl3 raising the intriguing possibility of a field-induced QSL exhibiting non-Abelian quasiparticle excitations. Here…
The Kitaev quantum spin liquid displays the fractionalization of quantum spins into Majorana fermions. The emergent Majorana edge current is predicted to manifest itself in the form of a finite thermal Hall effect, a feature commonly discussed in topological superconductors. Here we report on thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$ measurements in $α$-RuCl$_3$, a candidate Kitaev magnet with the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. In a spin-liquid (Kitaev paramagnetic) state below the temperature characterized by the Kitaev interaction $J_K/k_B \sim 80$ K, positive $κ_{xy}$ develops gradually upon c…
We have investigated the longitudinal thermal conductivity of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, the magnetic state of which is considered to be proximate to a Kitaev honeycomb model, along with the spin susceptibility and magnetic specific heat. We found that the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity exhibits an additional peak around 100 K, which is well above the phonon peak temperature ($\sim$ 50 K). The higher-temperature peak position is comparable to the temperature scale of the Kitaev couplings rather than the Néel temperatures below 15 K. The additional heat conduction was observed for all …
$α$-RuCl$_3$ has been proposed recently as an excellent playground for exploring Kitaev physics on a two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice. However, structural clarification of the compound has not been completed, which is crucial in understanding the physics of this system. Here, using {\it ab-initio} electronic structure calculations, we study a full three dimensional (3D) structure of $α$-RuCl$_3$ including the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and electronic correlations. Three major results are as follows; i) SOC suppresses dimerization of Ru atoms, which exists in other Ru compounds …
Recently, $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ has attracted much attention as a possible material realization of the honeycomb Kitaev model, which may stabilize a quantum-spin-liquid state. Compared to extensive studies on its magnetic properties, there is still a lack of understanding on its electronic structure, which is strongly related with its Kitaev physics. Here, the electronic structure of $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ is investigated by photoemission (PE) and inverse photoemission (IPE) spectroscopies. The band gap, directly measured from PE/IPE spectra, is found to be 1.9 eV, much larger than previous est…
Proposed effective Hamiltonians from the literature for the material $α$-RuCl${}_3$ are used to compute the magnon thermal Hall conductivity, $κ_{xy}$, using linear spin wave theory for the magnetically ordered state. No model previously proposed that was tested explains published experimental data. Models with Kitaev interaction $K>0$ are seen to predict $κ_{xy}\gtrsim 0$, which is inconsistent with the data. Fluctuations toward a Kitaev-type spin liquid would have the wrong sign to explain the data. However, a slight variant of a previously proposed model predicts a large $κ_{xy}$, demonstra…

Motivated by the recent experimental observation of the half-quantized thermal Hall conductivity for the candidate material of the Kitaev spin liquid, $α$-RuCl$_3$[ Y. Kasahara et al., Nature 559, 227 (2018)], we investigate effects of non-Kitaev exchange interactions, which exist in the real material, on the gapped chiral spin liquid state realized in the case with an applied magnetic field. It is found that off-diagonal exchange interactions enhance significantly the mass gap of Majorana fermions. This result provides a possible explanation for robust quantization of the thermal Hall conduct…
Magnetization and high-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements of the Kitaev-Heisenberg material alpha-RuCl3 reveal a pressure-induced crystallographic and magnetic phase transition at a hydrostatic pressure of p=0.2 GPa. This structural transition into a triclinic phase is characterized by a very strong dimerization of the Ru-Ru bonds, accompanied by a collapse of the magnetic susceptibility. Ab initio quantum-chemistry calculations disclose a pressure-induced enhancement of the direct 4d-4d bonding on particular Ru-Ru links, causing a sharp increase of the antiferromagnetic exchange intera…
We study the ordered moment direction in the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model relevant to honeycomb lattice magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling. We utilize numerical diagonalization and analyze the exact cluster groundstates using a particular set of spin coherent states, obtaining thereby quantum corrections to the magnetic anisotropy beyond conventional perturbative methods. It is found that the quantum fluctuations strongly modify the moment direction obtained at a classical level, and are thus crucial for a precise quantification of the interactions. The results show that the moment di…
We have investigated the sample dependence of the half-integer thermal Hall effect in $α$-RuCl$_3$ under a magnetic field tilted 45 degree from the $c$ axis to the $a$ axis. We find that the sample with the largest longitudinal thermal conductivity ($κ_{xx}$) shows the half-integer quantized thermal Hall effect expected in the Kitaev model. On the other hand, the quantized thermal Hall effect was not observed in the samples with smaller $κ_{xx}$. We suggest that suppressing the magnetic scattering effects on the phonon thermal conduction, which broaden the field-induced gap protecting the chir…
Intensive studies of the interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and electronic correlations in transition metal compounds have recently been undertaken. In particular, $j_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 bands on a honeycomb lattice provide a pathway to realize Kitaev's exactly solvable spin model. However, since current wisdom requires strong atomic SOC to make $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ bands, studies have been limited to iridium oxides. Contrary to this expectation, we demonstrate how Kitaev interactions arise in 4$d$-orbital honeycomb $α$-RuCl$_3$, despite having significantly weaker SOC than the iridium oxid…
$α$-RuCl$_3$ has been extensively studied recently because of potential bond-dependent Kitaev magnetic exchange interactions and the resulting quantum spin liquid phase that can be realized therein. It has been known that the covalency between Ru 4$d$- and Cl $p$-orbitals is crucial to induce large Kitaev interactions in this compound, therefore replacing Cl into heavier halogen elements such as Br or I can be a promising way to promote the Kitaev interaction even further. In a timely manner, there have been reports on synthesis of $α$-RuBr$_3$ and $α$-RuI$_3$, which are expected to host the s…
The Kitaev quantum spin liquid epitomizes an entangled topological state, for which two flavors of fractionalized low-energy excitations are predicted: the itinerant Majorana fermion and the Z2 gauge flux. Detection of these excitations remains challenging, because of their fractional quantum numbers and non-locality. It was proposed recently that fingerprints of fractional excitations are encoded in the phonon spectra of Kitaev quantum spin liquids through a novel fractional-excitation-phonon coupling. Here, we uncover this effect in $α$-RuCl3 using inelastic X-ray scattering with meV resolut…
Excitation by light pulses enables the manipulation of phases of quantum condensed matter. Here, we photoexcite high-energy holon-doublon pairs as a way to alter the magnetic free energy landscape of the Kitaev-Heisenberg magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$, with the aim to dynamically stabilize a proximate spin liquid phase. The holon-doublon pair recombination through multimagnon emission is tracked through the time-evolution of the magnetic linear dichroism originating from the competing zigzag spin ordered ground state. A small holon-doublon density suffices to reach a spin disordered state. The phase tra…
Magnetic properties of the substitution series Ru$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Cl$_3$ were investigated to determine the evolution from the anisotropic Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ with $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ magnetic Ru$^{3+}$ ions to the isotropic Heisenberg magnet CrCl$_3$ with $S = 3/2$ magnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions. Magnetization measurements on single crystals revealed a reversal of the magnetic anisotropy under doping, which we argue to arise from the competition between anisotropic Kitaev and off-diagonal interactions on the Ru-Ru links and approximately isotropic Cr-Ru and isotropic Cr-Cr interactions. In addit…
The Kitaev model predicts that quantum spin liquids (QSLs) will form at low temperatures under certain special conditions, and materials hosting the QSL state are frequently sought. The layered honeycomb lattice material α-RuCl3 has emerged as a prime candidate for displaying the Kitaev QSL state. Here we describe a new polymorph of RuI3 with a layered honeycomb lattice structure, synthesized at moderately high pressures and stable under ambient conditions. Preliminary characterization reveals metallic, paramagnetic behavior, the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 0.35 K and an unusu…
We study the extended Kitaev model called the K$Γ$ model, using a perturbative expansion combined with a well-controlled mean-field approximation and a cutting-edge exact diagonalization. In the phase diagram, we discover a nematic Kitaev spin liquid and a Kekulé Kitaev spin liquid. The former potentially explains the high-field nematic state with zero Chern number experimentally observed in $α$-RuCl$_3$, even for sufficiently small values of $Γ/|K|$. The latter has a Majorana zero mode in its $Z_3$ vortex core, which can be potentially controlled by the domain wall motion. This opens a possib…
We use the constrained random phase approximation (cRPA) to derive from first principles the Ru-$t_{2g}$ Wannier function based model for the Kitaev spin-liquid candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$. We find the non-local Coulomb repulsion to be sizable compared to the local one. In addition we obtain the contribution to the Hamiltonian from the spin-orbit coupling and find it to also contain non-negligible non-local terms. We invoke strong coupling perturbation theory to investigate the influence of these non-local elements of the Coulomb repulsion and the spin-orbit coupling on the magnetic intera…
A key characteristic of quantum spin liquids(QSL) is the presence of fractional excitations related to their entanglement properties, yet experimental verification of their statistics is missing. For example, in the potential Kitaev spin liquid, RuCl3 experiments uncovered signs of fractional particles, though not their Fermi statistics. Here we employ Raman scattering to reveal the true nature of the magnetic excitations, using improved experimental methods and analysis to remove the influence of laser heating and thermal fluctuations. Via the energy loss and gain spectra, we extract the ener…
The honeycomb Kitaev model in a magnetic field is a source of a topological quantum spin liquid with Majorana fermions and gauge flux excitations as fractional quasiparticles. We present experimental results for the thermal Hall effect of the material $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ which recently emerged as a prime candidate for realizing such physics. At temperatures above long-range magnetic ordering $T\gtrsim T_N\approx8$ K, we observe with an applied magnetic field $B$ perpendicular to the honeycomb layers a sizeable positive transversal heat conductivity $κ_{xy}$ which increases linearly with $B$. Upon r…
The pursuit of quantum spin liquid (QSL) in the Kitaev honeycomb magnets has drawn intensive attention recently. In particular, $α$-RuCl$_3$ has been widely recognized as a promising candidate for the Kitaev QSL. Although the compound exhibits an antiferromagnetic order under zero field, it is believed to be endowed with fractionalized excitations, and can be driven to the QSL phase by magnetic fields. Here, based on a realistic $K$-$J$-$Γ$-$Γ'$ model for $α$-RuCl$_3$ [1], we exploit the exponential tensor renormalization group approach to explore the phase diagram of the compound under magnet…
The honeycomb Kitaev-Heisenberg model is a source of a quantum spin liquid with Majorana fermions and gauge flux excitations as fractional quasiparticles. In the quest of finding a pertinent material, $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ recently emerged as a prime candidate. Here we unveil highly unusual low-temperature heat conductivity $κ$ of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$: beyond a magnetic field of $B_c\approx$ 7.5 T, $κ$ increases by about one order of magnitude, resulting in a large magnetic field dependent peak at about 7 K, both for in-plane as well as out-of-plane transport. This clarifies the unusual magnetic field depe…
Using quantum chemistry calculations we shed fresh light on the electronic structure and magnetic properties of RuCl3, a proposed realization of the honeycomb Kitaev spin model. It is found that the nearest-neighbor Kitaev exchange K is weaker than in 5d5 Ir oxides but still larger than other effective spin couplings. The electronic-structure computations also indicate a ferromagnetic K in the halide, which is supported by a detailed analysis of the field-dependent magnetization. From exact-diagonalization calculations for extended Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonians we additionally find that a tra…
The pure Kitaev honeycomb model harbors a quantum spin liquid in zero magnetic fields, while applying finite magnetic fields induces a topological spin liquid with non-Abelian anyonic excitations. This latter phase has been much sought after in Kitaev candidate materials, such as $α$-RuCl$_3$. Currently, two competing scenarios exist for the intermediate field phase of this compound ($B=7-10$ T), based on experimental as well as theoretical results: (i) conventional multiparticle magnetic excitations of integer quantum number vs. (ii) Majorana fermionic excitations of possibly non-Abelian natu…
$α$-RuCl$_3$ has been hinted as a spin-orbital-assisted Mott insulator in proximity to a Kitaev spin liquid state. Here we present ARPES measurements on single crystal $α$-RuCl$_3$ in both the pristine and electron-doped states, and combine them with LDA+SOC+U calculations performed for the several low-energy competing magnetically ordered states as well as the paramagnetic state. A large Mott gap is found in the measured band structure of the pristine compound that persists to more than 20 times beyond the magnetic ordering temperature, though the paramagnetic calculation shows almost no gap.…
We report detailed measurements of the Onsager-like planar thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$ in $α$-RuCl$_3$, a spin-liquid candidate of topical interest. With the thermal current ${\bf J}_{\rm Q}$ and magnetic field $\bf B\parallel a$ (zigzag axis), the observed $κ_{xy}/T$ varies strongly with temperature $T$ (1-10 K). The results are well-described by bosonic edge excitations which evolve to topological magnons at large $B$. Fits to $κ_{xy}/T$ yield a Chern number $\sim 1$ and a band energy $ω_1\sim$1 meV, in agreement with sharp modes seen in electron spin-resonance experiments. The bosoni…
Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling have been proposed to host unconventional magnetic states, including the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. The 4$d$ system $α$-RuCl$_3$ has recently come into view as a candidate Kitaev system, with evidence for unusual spin excitations in magnetic scattering experiments. We apply a combination of optical spectroscopy and Raman scattering to study the electronic structure of this material. Our measurements reveal a series of orbital excitations involving localized total angular momentum states of the Ru ion, implying that strong spin-orbit coupling and…
A quantum spin-liquid might be realized in $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, a honeycomb-lattice magnetic material with substantial spin-orbit coupling. Moreover, $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a Mott insulator, which implies the possibility that novel exotic phases occur upon doping. Here, we study the electronic structure of this material when intercalated with potassium by photoemission spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. We obtain a stable stoichiometry at K$_{0.5}$RuCl$_3$. This gives rise to a peculiar charge disproportionation into formally Ru$^{2+}$ (4$d^6$) a…
Despite extensive investigations, a topological state that hosts Majorana edge modes in the magnetic field-induced quantum disordered state of the Kitaev candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$ has been hotly debated. To gain more insight into this issue, we measured the thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$ of various samples grown by the Bridgman method. The results show that the half-integer quantum thermal Hall effect is intimately related to the magnitude of longitudinal thermal conductivity and the Néel temperature at zero field, both of which are sample dependent. Samples exhibiting the half-integ…
What is the correct low-energy spin Hamiltonian description of $α$-RuCl$_3$? The material is a promising Kitaev spin liquid candidate, but is also known to order magnetically, the description of which necessitates additional interaction terms. The nature of these interactions, their magnitudes and even signs, remain an open question. In this work we systematically investigate dynamical and thermodynamic magnetic properties of proposed effective Hamiltonians. We calculate zero-temperature inelastic neutron scattering (INS) intensities using exact diagonalization, and magnetic specific heat usin…
We present first-principles results on the magnetoelastic coupling in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and uncover a striking dependence of the magnetic coupling constants on strain effects. Different magnetic interactions are found to respond very unequally to variations in the lattice, with the Kitaev interaction being the most sensitive. Exact diagonalization results on our magnetoelastic model reproduce recent measurements of the structural Grüneisen parameter and explain the origin of the negative magnetostriction of $α$-RuCl$_3$, disentangling contributions related to different anisotropic interactions and …
We present an analytical study of the exchange interactions between pseudospin one-half $d^{5}$ ions in honeycomb lattices with edge-shared octahedra. Various exchange channels involving Hubbard U, charge-transfer excitations, and cyclic exchange are considered. Hoppings within $t_{2g}$ orbitals as well as between $t_{2g}$ and $e_g$ orbitals are included. Special attention is paid to the trigonal crystal field $Δ$ effects on the exchange parameters. The obtained exchange Hamiltonian is dominated by ferromagnetic Kitaev interaction K within a wide range of $Δ$. It is found that a parameter regi…
The Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) on the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice epitomizes an entangled topological state, where the spins fractionalize into Majorana fermions. This state has aroused tremendous interest because it harbors non-Abelian anyon excitations. The half-integer quantized thermal Hall (HIQTH) conductance observed in $α$-RuCl$_3$ is a key signature of these excitations. However, the fate of this topologically nontrivial state at intense fields remains largely elusive. Here, we report the thermal conductivity $κ$ and specific heat $C$ of $α$-RuCl$_3$ with in-plane magnetic …
