We study particle and chirality production from the vacuum in the presence of a slow strong parallel electromagnetic field superimposed by a fast weak perturbative electromagnetic field. We derive an analytical formula for the particle and chirality production number based on the perturbation theory in the Furry picture. With the formula, we analytically discuss the interplay and dynamical assistance between the Schwinger mechanism and one-photon pair production and clarify effects of a parallel slow strong magnetic field. We also show that the dynamical assistance can significantly enhance chirality production, and that a sizable amount of chirality can be produced even for massive particles. Phenomenological applications including heavy-ion collisions and intense laser experiments are also discussed.
The anomalous generation of chirality with mass effects via the axial Ward identity and its dependence on the Schwinger mechanism is reviewed, utilizing parity violating homogeneous electromagnetic background fields. The role vacuum asymptotic states play on the interpretation of expectation values is examined. It is discussed that observables calculated with an in-out scattering matrix element predict a scenario under Euclidean equilibrium. A notable ramification of which is a vanishing of the chiral anomaly. In contrast, it is discussed observables calculated under an in-in, or real-time, fo…
We elucidate chirality production under parity breaking constant electromagnetic fields, with which we clarify qualitative differences in and out of equilibrium. For a strong magnetic field the pair production from the Schwinger mechanism increments the chirality. The pair production rate is exponentially suppressed with mass according to the Schwinger formula, while the mass dependence of chirality production in the axial Ward identity appears in the pesudo-scalar term. We demonstrate that in equilibrium field theory calculus the axial anomaly is canceled by the pseudo-scalar condensate for a…
Recently the dynamically assisted Schwinger mechanism, i.e., electron-positron pair production from vacuum by a combination of laser pulses with different time scales has been proposed. The corresponding results, which suggest that the rate of produced pairs is significantly enhanced by dynamical effects, are verified. Employing the framework of quantum kinetic theory intrinsically enables us to additionally provide momentum space information on the generated positron spectrum.
We present a phase-integral formulation of dynamically assisted Schwinger pair production of scalar charges to find the pair production density under a strong low-frequency field and a weak high-frequency field. The leading WKB action was the Schwinger formula determined by the constant field, whose corrections are determined by the Keldysh parameter for the oscillating field, $mω_{q}/qE_{q}$. We found a systematic expression of the leading WKB action as a power series in the Keldysh parameter, of which coefficients are given as integrals of the product of fields in the complex time domain. Fo…
The $N_f$-flavour Schwinger Model on a finite space $0\leq x^1\leq L$ and subject to bag-type boundary-conditions at $x^1=0$ und $x^1=L$ is solved at finite temperature $T=1/β$. The boundary conditions depend on a real parameter $θ$ and break the axial flavour symmetry. We argue that this approach is more appropriate to study the broken phases than introducing small quark masses, since all calculations can be performed analytically. In the imaginary time formalism we determine the thermal correlators for the fermion-fields and the determinant of the Dirac-operator in arbitrary background gauge…
We study electron and positron pair production from the vacuum by a strong slow electric field superimposed by a weak fast electric field pointing in an arbitrary direction as a perturbation (the dynamically assisted Schwinger mechanism). An analytical formula for the production number is derived on the basis of the perturbation theory in the Furry picture. The formula is found to be in good agreement with non-perturbative results obtained by numerically solving the Dirac equation if the perturbation is sufficiently weak and/or is not very slow. We also find analytically/numerically that the S…
We study electron-positron pair creation by a strong and slowly varying electric field, assisted by a weaker and more rapidly changing field (e.g., in the keV regime) plus an additional high-energy (say MeV) photon. It turns out that this combination can yield a pair creation probability which is exponentially larger than in the case where one (or more) of the three ingredients is missing. Apart from a deeper understanding of these non-perturbative phenomena, this double enhancement may pave the way for an experimental verification of this fundamental prediction.
In the (2+1)-dimensional QED with and without the Chern-Simons term, we find the non-local gauge in which there is no wavefunction renormalization for the fermion in the framework of the Schwinger-Dyson equation. By solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation in the non-local gauge, we find a finite critical value $N_f^c$ for the number of flavors $N_f$ of four-component Dirac fermions, above which the chiral symmetry restores irrespective of presence or absence of the Chern-Simons term. In the same framework, we study the possibility of dynamical breakdown of the parity. It is shown that the parity …
We point out an enhancement of the pair production rate of charged fermions in a strong electric field in the presence of time dependent classical axion-like background field, which we call axion assisted Schwinger effect. While the standard Schwinger production rate is proportional to $\exp(-π(m^2+p_T^2 )/E)$, with $m$ and $p_T$ denoting the fermion mass and its momentum transverse to the electric field $E$, the axion assisted Schwinger effect can be enhanced at large momenta to $\exp(-πm^2/E)$. The origin of this enhancement is a coupling between the fermion spin and its momentum, induced by…
Electron-positron pair production by the superposition of two laser pulses with different frequencies and amplitudes is analyzed as a particular realization of the assisted dynamic Schwinger effect. It is demonstrated that, within a non-perturbative kinetic equation framework, an amplification effect is conceivable for certain parameters. When both pulses have wavelengths longer than the Compton wavelength, the residual net density of produced pairs is determined by the resultant field strength. The number of pairs starts to grow rapidly if the wavelength of the high-frequency laser component …
Particle production induced by a time-dependent background is well understood as the projection of the time-evolved initial state onto a set of final states. While the asymptotic initial and final states are well defined in the usual way, the definition of particles and antiparticles at intermediate times in the presence of external fields is ambiguous. These external fields moreover induce divergences which require regularization. In this paper we clarify some subtleties in the computation of transient effects in physical quantities for fermions in a homogeneous axion background, including Sc…
We study electron-positron pair creation by a strong and constant electric field superimposed with a weaker transversal plane wave which is incident perpendicularly (or under some angle). Comparing the fully non-perturbative approach based on the world-line instanton method with a perturbative expansion into powers of the strength of the weaker plane wave, we find good agreement - provided that the latter is carried out to sufficiently high orders. As usual for the dynamically assisted Sauter-Schwinger effect, the additional plane wave induces an exponential enhancement of the pair-creation pr…
We study the Schwinger-Dyson equation associated with a chirality- changing fermion 4-point function in a strongly-coupled $U(1)$ gauge theory. After making appropriate simplifications, we solve the equation numerically via a relaxation method. Our analysis provides an estimate of the critical coupling and it gives some indication as to the general momentum dependence of the 4-point function.
Using the worldline formalism we compute an effective action for fermions under a temporally modulated electric field and a spatially modulated magnetic field. It is known that the former leads to an enhanced Schwinger Mechanism, while we find that the latter can also result in enhanced particle production and even cause a reorganization of the vacuum to acquire a larger dynamical mass in equilibrium which spatially assists the Magnetic Catalysis.
The dynamically assisted pair creation (Schwinger effect) is considered for the superposition of two periodic electric fields acting a finite time interval. We find a strong enhancement by orders of magnitude caused by a weak field with a frequency being a multitude of the strong-field frequency. The strong low-frequency field leads to shell structures which are lifted by the weaker high-frequency field. The resonance type amplification refers to a new, monotonously increasing mode, often hidden in some strong oscillatory transient background which disappears during the smoothly switching off …
We study electron-positron pair production by the combination of a strong, constant electric field and a thermal background. We show that this process is similar to dynamically assisted Schwinger pair production, where the strong field is instead assisted by another coherent field, which is weaker but faster. We treat the interaction with the photons from the thermal background perturbatively, while the interaction with the electric field is nonperturbative (i.e. a Furry picture expansion in $α$). At $\mathcal{O}(α^2)$ we have ordinary perturbative Breit-Wheeler pair production assisted nonper…
The assistance of an intense optical laser pulse on electron-positron pair production by the Breit-Wheeler and Schwinger processes in XFEL fields is analyzed. The impact of a laser beam on high-energy photon collisions with XFEL photons consists in a phase space redistribution of the pairs emerging in the Breit-Wheeler sub-process. We provide numerical examples of the differential cross section for parameters related to the European XFEL. Analogously, the Schwinger type pair production in pulsed fields with oscillating components referring to a superposition of optical laser and XFEL frequenci…
The spontaneous production of electron-positron pairs from the vacuum--in a field configuration composed of a high-frequency electric mode of weak intensity and a strong constant electric field--is investigated. Asymptotic expressions for the single-particle distribution function ruling this nonperturbative process are established by considering the low-density approximation in the Boltzmann-Vlasov equation. An analytical formula for the density rate of yielded particles is established which is shown to manifest a nonperturbative dependence on both the strong and weak electric fields and to in…
The Sauter-Schwinger effect predicts the creation of electron-positron pairs out of the quantum vacuum by a strong and slowly varying electric field. This effect can be dynamically assisted by an additional weaker time-dependent field, which may drastically enhance the pair-creation probability. In previous studies, it has been found that the enhancement may crucially depend on the temporal shape of this weaker pulse, e.g., a Gaussian profile $\exp\{-(ωt)^2\}$ or a Sauter pulse $1/\cosh^2(ωt)$ behave quite differently. In order to understand this difference, we make a perturbative expansion in…
We investigate the phenomenon of electron-positron pair production from vacuum in the presence of a strong electric field superimposed by a weak but fast varying pulse which substantially increases the total particle yield. We employ a nonperturbative numerical technique and perform the calculations beyond the spatially-uniform-field approximation, i.e. dipole approximation, taking into account the coordinate dependence of the fast component. The analysis of the main characteristics of the pair-production process (momentum spectra of particles and total amount of pairs) reveals a number of imp…
Counter-propagating and suitably polarized light (laser) beams can provide conditions for pair production. Here, we consider in more detail the following two situations: (i) In the homogeneity regions of anti-nodes of linearly polarized ultra-high intensity laser beams, the Schwinger process is dynamically assisted by a second high-frequency field, e.g. by a XFEL beam. (ii) A high-energy probe photon beam colliding with a superposition of co-propagating intense laser and XFEL beams gives rise to the laser assisted Breit-Wheeler process. Prospects of such bi-frequent field constellations with r…
In this paper, we study Schwinger pair production of charged massless particles in constant electric fields of finite-extent. Exploiting a map from the Dirac and Klein-Gordon equation to the harmonic oscillator, we find exact pair production rates for massless fermions and scalars. Pair production rates depend only on the ratio between the capacitor plate separation, $\ell$, and the length-scale of the force-field, $\ell_F$. Chirality ensures that fermion production smoothly vanishes with $\ell/\ell_F$. Scalar pair production though diverges exponentially quickly in this limit. The same limit …
Recent studies of Schwinger pair production have demonstrated that the asymptotic particle spectrum is extremely sensitive to the applied field profile. We extend the idea of the dynamically assisted Schwinger effect from single pulse profiles to more realistic field configurations to be generated in an all-optical experiment searching for pair creation. We use the quantum kinetic approach to study the particle production and employ a multi-start method, combined with optimal control theory, to determine a set of parameters for which the particle yield in the forward direction in momentum spac…
Recent studies of the dynamically assisted Schwinger effect have shown that particle production is significantly enhanced by a proper choice of the electric field. We demonstrate that optimal control theory provides a systematic means of modifying the pulse shape in order to maximize the particle yield. We employ the quantum kinetic framework and derive the relevant optimal control equations. By means of simple examples we discuss several important issues of the optimization procedure such as constraints, initial conditions or scaling. By relating our findings to established results we demonst…
Dykhne-Davis-Pechukas (DDP) method is a common approximation scheme for the transition probability in two-level quantum systems, as realized in the Landau-Zener effect, leading to an exponentially damping form comparable to the Schwinger pair production rate. We analyze the foundation of the DDP method using a modern complex technique inspired by the Lefschetz-thimble method. We derive an alternative and more adaptive formula that is useful even when the DDP method is inapplicable. As a benchmark, we study the modified Landau-Zener model and compare results from the DDP and our methods. We the…
We studied a QED analog of the Franz-Keldysh effect, and the interplay between the non-perturbative (the Schwinger mechanism) and the perturbative particle production mechanism from the vacuum in the presence of a strong slow field superimposed by a weak field. We found that the Franz-Keldysh effect significantly affects the particle production: (i) the perturbative particle production occurs even below the threshold energy; (ii) the perturbative production becomes the most efficient just above the threshold energy; and (iii) an oscillating behavior appears in the production number above the t…
In the dynamically assisted Schwinger mechanism, the pair production probability is significantly enhanced by including a weak, rapidly varying field in addition to a strong, slowly varying field. In a previous paper we showed that several features of dynamical assistance can be understood by a perturbative treatment of the weak field. Here we show how to calculate the prefactors of the higher-orders terms, which is important because the dominant contribution can come from higher orders. We give a new and independent derivation of the momentum spectrum using the worldline formalism, and extend…
Electron-positron pair production from vacuum in external electric fields with space and time dependencies is studied numerically using real time Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism. The influence of spatial focusing scale of the electric field on momentum distribution and the total yield of the particles is examined by considering standing wave mode of the electric field with different temporal configurations. With the decrease of spatial extent of the external field, signatures of the temporal field are weaken in the momentum spectrum. Moreover, in the extremely small spatial extent, novel fea…
Bound-free electron-positron pair production in combined Coulomb and constant crossed electromagnetic fields: a Schwinger-like process with intrinsic assistance
This work covers electron positron pair production in spatially homogeneous electric (and magnetic) fields. Different field configurations are looked at in order to study various phenomena including multiphoton pair production, Sauter-Schwinger pair production and dynamically assisted pair production. The main focus lies on pulsed, rotating fields with one main frequency component which are called rotating Sauter pulses. The results are obtained via two numerical methods, that rest on different theoretical approaches. A generic method is derived from the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner (DHW) formalism…
We study the vacuum pair production by a time-dependent strong electric field based on the exact WKB analysis. We identify the generic structure of a Stokes graph for systems with the vacuum pair production and show that the number of produced pairs is given by a product of connection matrices for Stokes segments connecting pairs of turning points. We derive an explicit formula for the number of produced pairs, assuming the semi-classical limit. The obtained formula can be understood as a generalization of the divergent asymptotic series method by Berry, and is consistent with other semi-class…
By using Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism we study electron-positron pair production for linear, elliptic, nearly circular and circular polarizations of electric fields with symmetrical frequency chirp, and we obtain Momentum spectra and pair yield. The difference of results among polarized fields is obvious for the small chirp. When the chirp parameter increases, the momentum spectra tend to exhibit the multiphoton pair generation that is characterized by the multi-concentric ring structure. The increase of number density is also remarkable compared to the case of asymmetrical frequency chir…
The non-perturbative electron-positron pair production in time-dependent electric fields is investigated. The quantum kinetic formalism is employed in order to calculate the electron density for various field configurations. The corresponding set of first order, ordinary differential equations is analyzed and numerically solved. The focus of this study lies on the dynamically assisted Schwinger effect in pulsed electric fields with at least two different time scales. Furthermore, interference effects arising in setups with multiple pulses are examined and first results for an optimization of t…
It is demonstrated that a pair can be characterized under which mechanism it was created according to its conversion energy, a quantity defined as the sum of electron and its conjugate positron's mass-energy, in the study of electron-positron pair creation. The value of this quantity is checked with quantum field theoretical simulations for several field configurations and found that it can describe the creation process with rich physical picture, showing all the creation channels and giving the yields of each channel specifically. Evenly as a very convenient and powerful detection quantity it…
We study the chirality of ground-state alkali atoms in E and B fields, dressed with a circularly-polarized laser beam close-detuned from an E-field-assisted forbidden transition, such as 7S-8S in Fr. We predict a parity violating energy shift of their sublevels, linear in E, and the weak nuclear charge Q_W$. A dressing beam of 10 kW/cm$^2$ at 506 nm produces a shift of $\sim100 μ$Hz at E=100 V/cm, B $\gtrsim$30 mG. It should be observable with $\sim 10^4$ Fr atoms confined in an optical dipole trap. We discuss optimal conditions, parameter reversals and a calibration procedure to measure $Q_W$…
We first demonstrate theoretically that the computational quantum field theory is equivalent to the quantum kinetic theory for pair creation in a spatially homogeneous and time-dependent electric field, then verify numerically their equivalence for pair creation in one-dimensional time-dependent electric fields, and finally investigate detailedly the effects of the field frequency, spatial width, pulse duration, and relative phase on dynamically assisted Schwinger pair production in an inhomogeneous two-color electric field. It is found that the enhancement effect of pair creation is very sens…
The quantum vacuum may become an electromagnetic superconductor in the presence of a strong external magnetic field of the order of 10^{16} Tesla. The magnetic field of the required strength (and even stronger) is expected to be generated for a short time in ultraperipheral collisions of heavy ions at the Large Hadron Collider. The superconducting properties of the new phase appear as a result of a magnetic-field-assisted condensation of quark-antiquark pairs with quantum numbers of electrically charged rho mesons. We discuss similarities and differences between the suggested superconducting s…
