Stochastic power fluctuation in a fiber optic system due to the interplay among dispersion, nonlinearity and partial coherence of the source is investigated. An analytical expression for the power fluctuation of a signal pulse due to its interference with an echo pulse generated due to the nonlinear interaction of signal pulses in a fiber optic system excited by a partially coherent source is obtained. The analytical results show that the mean nonlinear distortion decreases as the coherence time of the source reduces consistent with our numerical simulations.
We report the experimental observation of multiple dispersive waves emitted in the anomalous dispersion region of an optical fiber from a train of dark solitons. Each individual dispersive wave can be associated to one particular dark soliton of the train, using phase-matching arguments involving higher-order dispersion and soliton velocity. For a large number of dark solitons (>10), we observe the formation of a continuum associated with the efficient emission of dispersive waves.
We study resonant radiation generated by bound solitons in a twin-core fiber near zero-dispersion wavelength, in the presence of higher order dispersion terms. We propose a theoretical description of dispersive wave generation mechanism and derive resonance conditions. The presence of third order dispersion term leads to generation of polychromatic dispersive radiation and transition from the regime of center of mass oscillations to the regime of amplitude oscillations. Such a transition is not reproduced in the case of symmetric fourth order dispersion.
This paper presents a three layer index guided lead silicate (SF57) photonic crystal fiber which simultaneously promises to yield large effective optical nonlinear coefficient and low anomalous dispersion that makes it suitable for supercontinuum generation. At an operating wavelength 1550 nm, the typical optimized value of anomalous dispersion and effective nonlinear coefficient turns out to be ~4 ps/km/nm and ~1078 W^(-1) km^(-1), respectively. Through numerical simulation it is realized that the designed fiber promises to exhibit three octave spanning supercontinuum from 900 to 7200 nm by u…
The possibility of tailoring the guidance properties of optical fibers along the same direction as the evolution of the optical field allows to explore new directions in nonlinear fiber optics. The new degree of freedom offered by axially-varying optical fibers enables to revisit well-established nonlinear phenomena, and even to discover novel short pulse nonlinear dynamics. Here we study the impact of meter-scale longitudinal variations of group velocity dispersion on the propagation of bright solitons and on their associated dispersive waves. We show that the longitudinal tailoring of fiber …
We propose a scheme for the emission of few-cycle dispersive waves in the mid-infrared using hollow-core photonic crystal fibers filled with noble gas. The underlying mechanism is the formation of a plasma cloud by a self-compressed, sub-cycle pump pulse. The resulting free-electron population modifies the fiber dispersion, allowing phase-matched access to dispersive waves at otherwise inaccessible frequencies, well into the mid-IR. Remarkably, the pulses generated turn out to have durations of the order of two optical cycles. In addition, this ultrafast emission, which occurs even in the abse…
This paper presents some numerical simulations of the full one-dimensional Maxwell-Lorentz equations that describe light propagation in fiber Bragg gratings in order to confirm that the standard nonlinear coupled mode equations fail to predict the weakly nonlinear dynamics of the system when dispersive instabilities come into play, and that, in this case, the correct slow envelope description of the system requires to consider higher order dispersion effects.
Dispersion effects induce new instabilities and dynamics in the weakly nonlinear description of light propagation in fiber Bragg gratings. A new family of dispersive localized pulses that propagate with the group velocity is numerically found and its stability is also analyzed. The unavoidable different asymptotic order of transport and dispersion effects plays a crucial role in the determination of these localized states. These results are also interesting from the point of view of general pattern formation since this asymptotic imbalance is a generic situation in any transport dominated (i.e…
The effect of retaining the material dispersion terms in the nonlinear coupled mode equations (NLCME) that describe light propagation in fiber Bragg gratings is analyzed. It is found that dispersion is responsible for new instabilities of the uniform states and gives rise to new complex spatio temporal dynamics that is not captured by the standard NLCME formulation. A detailed analysis of the effect of dispersion on the linear stability characteristics of the uniform solutions is presented and some numerical integrations of the NLCME with dispersion are also performed in order to corroborate t…
Despite the abundance and importance of three-dimensional systems, relatively little progress has been made on spatiotemporal nonlinear optical waves compared to time-only or space-only systems. Here we study radiation emitted by three-dimensionally evolving nonlinear optical waves in multimode fiber. Spatiotemporal oscillations of solitons in the fiber generate multimode dispersive wave sidebands over an ultrabroadband spectral range. This work suggests routes to multipurpose sources of coherent electromagnetic waves, with unprecedented wavelength coverage.
We consider the ultrashort light pulse propagation through an inhomogeneous monomodal optical fiber exhibiting higher-order dispersive effects. Wave propagation is governed by a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation with varying second-, third-, and fourth-order dispersions, cubic nonlinearity, and linear gain or loss. We construct a new type of exact self-similar soliton solutions that takes the structure of dipole via a similarity transformation connected to the related constant-coefficients one. The conditions on the optical fiber parameters for the existence of these self-similar stru…
New resonant emission of dispersive waves by oscillating solitary structures is considered analytically and numerically. The resonance condition for the radiation is derived and it is demonstrated that the predicted resonances match the spectral lines observed in numerical simulations perfectly. The complex recoil of the radiation on the soliton dynamics is discussed.
Bloch oscillations of spatio-temporal light wave packets in arrays of nonlinear fibers with high-order dispersion are studied. The light wave experiences discrete spatial diffraction along the waveguide array coordinate together with continuous temporal dispersion including higher order terms. When a gradient in the waveguide light confinement strength is considered, the wave packet features robust long-lived Bloch oscillations with temporal and spatial spreading in the presence of a Kerr nonlinearity. The effect of the spatial Bloch oscillations on the emission of the dispersive radiation by …
We experimentally demonstrate the realization of a half-polarization-maintaining (half-PM) fiber laser, in which mode-locking is provided by a reflective multimode-interference saturable absorber (SA). In the specially designed SA, linearly polarized light is coupled into a 15-cm-long graded-index multimode fiber (GIMF) through the PM fiber, and then reflected back to the PM structure through a mirror pigtailed with a single-mode fiber (SMF). The modulation depth and saturation peak power are measured to be 1.5% and 0.6 W, respectively. The proposed SA device is incorporated into a novel half-…
We demonstrate the first multimode fiber interference-based filtering in an all-fiber spatiotemporally mode-locked laser. The oscillator generates dissipative soliton pulses at 1036 nm with 12 mW average power, 6.24 ps duration and 24.3 MHz repetition rate. The reported pulse energy (0.5 nJ) represents ~4 times improvement over the previously reported single-mode all-normal dispersion mode-locked lasers with multimode interference-based filtering. Numerical simulations are performed to reveal cavity and spatiotemporal mode-locking dynamics. The proposed oscillator presents an alternative appro…
We develop a model for the description of nonlinear pulse propagation in multimode optical fibers with a parabolic refractive index profile. It consists in a 1+1D generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic nonlinear coefficient, which can be solved in an extremely fast and efficient way. The model is able to quantitatively reproduce recently observed phenomena like geometric parametric instability and broadband dispersive wave emission. We envisage that our equation will represent a valuable tool for the study of spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics in the growing field of multimo…
We develop a spatiotemporal mode decomposition technique to study the mode power distribution of ultrashort pulses emerging from long spans of graded-index multimode fiber, for different input laser conditions. We find that beam mode power content in the dispersive pulse propagation regime can be described by the Bose-Einstein law, as a result of the process of power diffusion from linear and nonlinear mode coupling among nondegenerate mode groups. In the soliton regime, the output mode power distribution approaches the Rayleigh-Jeans law
We present a theory describing trapping of the normally dispersive radiation by the Raman solitons in optical fibers. Frequency of the radiation component is continuously blue shifting, while the soliton is red shifting. Underlying physics of the trapping effect is in the existence of the inertial gravity-like force acting on light in the accelerating frame of reference. We present analytical calculations of the rate of the opposing frequency shifts of the soliton and trapped radiation and find it to be greater than the rate of the red shift of the bare Raman soliton. Our findings are essentia…
The article provides a survey of (chiefly, theoretical) results obtained for self-trapped modes (solitons) in various models of one-dimensional optical waveguides based on a pair of parallel guiding cores, which combine the linear inter-core coupling with the intrinsic cubic (Kerr) nonlinearity, anomalous group-velocity dispersion, and, possibly, intrinsic loss and gain in each core. The survey is focused on three main topics: spontaneous breaking of the inter-core symmetry and the formation of asymmetric temporal solitons in dual-core fibers; stabilization of dissipative temporal solitons (es…
In this paper, we study the evolution of intensive light pulses in nonlinear single-mode fibers. The dynamics of light in such fibers is described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the Raman term, due to stimulated Raman self-scattering. It is shown that dispersive shock waves are formed during the evolution of sufficiently intensive pulses. In this case, the situation is much richer than for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with Kerr nonlinearity only. The Whitham equations are obtained under the assumption that the Raman term can be considered as a small perturbation. These equati…
Extensive numerical simulations were performed to investigate all stages of modulation instability development from the initial pulse of pico-second duration in photonic crystal fiber: quasi-solitons and dispersive waves formation, their interaction stage and the further propagation. Comparison between 4 different NLS-like systems was made: the classical NLS equation, NLS system plus higher dispersion terms, NLS plus higher dispersion and self-steepening and also fully generalized NLS equation with Raman scattering taken into account. For the latter case a mechanism of energy transfer from sma…
We introduce a models for two coupled waves propagating in a hollow-core fiber: a linear dispersionless core mode, and a dispersive nonlinear quasi-surface one. The linear coupling between them may open a bandgap, through the mechanism of the avoidance of crossing between dispersion curves. The third-order dispersion of the quasi-surface mode is necessary for the existence of the gap. Numerical investigation reveals that the entire bandgap is filled with solitons, and they all are stable in direct simulations. The gap-soliton (GS) family is extended to include pulses moving relative to the giv…
