With the increasing number of new attacks on ever growing network traffic, it is becoming challenging to alert immediately any malicious activities to avoid loss of sensitive data and money. This is making intrusion detection as one of the major areas of concern in network security. Anomaly based network intrusion detection technique is one of the most commonly used technique. Depending upon the dataset used to test those techniques, the accuracy varies. Most of the times this dataset does not represent the real network traffic. Considering this, this project involves analysis of different machine learning algorithms used in intrusion detection systems, when tested upon two datasets which are similar to current real world network traffic(CICIDS2017) and an improvement of KDD 99 (NSL-KDD). After the analysis of different intrusion detection systems on both the datasets, this project aimed to develop a new hybrid model for intrusion detection systems. This new hybrid approach combines decision tree and random forest algorithms using stacking scheme to achieve an accuracy of 85.2% and precision of 86.2% for NSL-KDD dataset, and achieve an accuracy of 98% and precision of 98% for CICIDS2017 dataset.
A large amount of work has been done on the KDD 99 dataset, most of which includes the use of a hybrid anomaly and misuse detection model done in parallel with each other. In order to further classify the intrusions, our approach to network intrusion detection includes use of two different anomaly detection models followed by misuse detection applied on the combined output obtained from the previous step. The end goal of this is to verify the anomalies detected by the anomaly detection algorithm and clarify whether they are actually intrusions or random outliers from the trained normal (and th…

Intrusion Detection Systems are widely used to detect cyberattacks, especially on protocols vulnerable to hacking attacks such as SOME/IP. In this paper, we present a deep learning-based sequential model for offline intrusion detection on SOME/IP application layer protocol. To assess our intrusion detection system, we have generated and labeled a dataset with several classes representing realistic intrusions, and a normal class - a significant contribution due to the absence of such publicly available datasets. Furthermore, we also propose a recurrent neural network (RNN), as an instance of de…

The selected features are used to build a deep neural network for intrusion detection. The proposed algorithm achieves 100% detection accuracy in identifying DDoS attacks. The test results indicate a great potential of the proposed method.
A number of works in the field of intrusion detection have been based on Artificial Immune System and Soft Computing. Artificial Immune System based approaches attempt to leverage the adaptability, error tolerance, self- monitoring and distributed nature of Human Immune Systems. Whereas Soft Computing based approaches are instrumental in developing fuzzy rule based systems for detecting intrusions. They are computationally intensive and apply machine learning (both supervised and unsupervised) techniques to detect intrusions in a given system. A combination of these two approaches could provid…

Traditional network intrusion detection approaches encounter feasibility and sustainability issues to combat modern, sophisticated, and unpredictable security attacks. Deep neural networks (DNN) have been successfully applied for intrusion detection problems. The optimal use of DNN-based classifiers requires careful tuning of the hyper-parameters. Manually tuning the hyperparameters is tedious, time-consuming, and computationally expensive. Hence, there is a need for an automatic technique to find optimal hyperparameters for the best use of DNN in intrusion detection. This paper proposes a nov…
As an indispensable defensive measure of network security, the intrusion detection is a process of monitoring the events occurring in a computer system or network and analyzing them for signs of possible incidents. It is a classifier to judge the event is normal or malicious. The information used for intrusion detection contains some redundant features which would increase the difficulty of training the classifier for intrusion detection and increase the time of making predictions. To simplify the training process and improve the efficiency of the classifier, it is necessary to remove these di…

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) play an important role in identifying malicious attacks and threats in networking systems. As fundamental tools of IDSs, learning based classification methods have been widely employed. When it comes to detecting network intrusions in small sample sizes (e.g., emerging intrusions), the limited number and imbalanced proportion of training samples usually cause significant challenges in training supervised and semi-supervised classifiers. In this paper, we propose a general network intrusion detection framework to address the challenges of both \emph{data scarc…

Research in computer vision, where this vulnerability was first discovered, has shown that adversarial images designed to fool a specific model can deceive other machine learning models. In this paper, we investigate the transferability of adversarial network tra…

Intrusion detection system (IDS) has been widely deployed as a defense measure for computer networks. Features extracted from network traffic can be used as sign to detect anomalies. However with the huge amount of network traffic, collected data contains irrelevant and redundant features that affect the detection rate of the IDS, consumes high amount of system resources, and slowdown the training and testing process of the IDS. In this paper, a new…
In computer security, designing a robust intrusion detection system is one of the most fundamental and important problems. In this paper, we propose a system-call language-modeling approach for designing anomaly-based host intrusion detection systems. To remedy the issue of high false-alarm rates commonly arising in conventional methods, we employ a novel ensemble method that blends multiple thresholding classifiers into a single one, making it possible to accumulate 'highly normal' sequences. The proposed system-call language model has various advantages leveraged by the fact that it can lear…

Cyber attacks pose crucial threats to computer system security, and put digital treasuries at excessive risks. This leads to an urgent call for an effective intrusion detection system that can identify the intrusion attacks with high accuracy. It is challenging to classify the intrusion events due to the wide variety of attacks. Furthermore, in a normal network environment, a majority of the connections are initiated by benign behaviors. The class imbalance issue in intrusion detection forces the classifier to be biased toward the majority/benign class, thus leave many attack incidents undetec…
